Spring game takeaways spotlight EIU defensive goal for fall season

Spring game takeaways spotlight EIU defensive goal for fall season

CHARLESTON — If there’s a mathematical formula to success, first-year Eastern Illinois head coach Chris Wilkerson thinks he has part of the equation.

“The statistics will show you that if you take away 25 possessions from the offense, that you have a chance to win eight or more football games. So, that’s the goal for our defense,” Wilkerson told Prairie State Pigskin following Saturday’s annual EIU spring game.

There’s no doubt the Panthers are looking for any way to get wins after a 1-10 season under former head coach Adam Cushing.

EIU opponents were +5 in turnover margin in 2021. Furthermore, Panther foes outscored EIU 78-54 in points off turnovers.

“The focus this spring was just to continue to improve and to develop the (team) relationships, but at the same time it was trying to take the football away. That’s one of the things we pride ourselves on defense,” said Wilkerson, who was hired during the winter following Cushing’s departure to become the offensive line coach at Duke University.

Ten defensive starters scheduled to return

EIU returns 10 of 11 defensive starters from a year ago. Linebacker Jason Johnson, who led the Ohio Valley Conference in tackles, left the Panthers via the transfer portal and will play for FBS Central Florida in the fall.

A closer look at the turnovers Eastern created a year ago reveals the Panthers forced 23 fumbles —  recovering 14 — but intercepted only four passes in 11 games.

“Last season we lacked getting turnovers, so that’s something we’re after. Everybody is swarming around the ball,” sophomore linebacker Colin Bohanek said. “Today (during the scrimmage) we got four, so that’s a big emphasis.”

Blake Ruffin

All four turnovers in the spring game came on interceptions — two by sophomore Blake Ruffin.

“Everybody was getting on me because I’ve dropped a lot in practice, so I came in here and caught two in the first half,” Ruffin said.

The 6-foot-4 and 215-pound Ruffin is listed as a safety on EIU’s roster, but qualifies as one of the versatile players Wilkerson wants.

“We’ve got guys that have played corner that are now playing ‘Fox’ (outside linebacker), and we’ve got guys that have played ‘Fox’ that are now playing safety,” Wilkerson said.

“One of the real strengths of this defense is that guys can play multiple positions,” said first-year defensive coordinator Adam Gristick, who was promoted from linebackers coach and is the lone holdover assistant from Cushing’s staff.

“The greater number of positions that you actually know how to play, the more flexibility we have with you and it’s just a matter of just getting the next best player in if you don’t happen to be one of those 11 (starters) out there,” Wilkerson said.

Complimentary football

One of the ways to improve Eastern’s defense is by getting more of out its offense.

https://www.chicagonow.com/prairie-state-pigskin/2022/04/eastern-illinois-offense-in-a-hurry-to-put-2021-season-behind/

A year ago, the Panthers struggled mightily with the ball. EIU was one of only nine FCS teams in the nation to average fewer than 15 points a game. That number, combined with a 25-percent success rate on third down, often left the Eastern defense on the field for long stretches.

The third quarter was particularly hard on the Panthers. Last season, Eastern converted only 4-of-30 (13.3 percent) on third down in that period. Meanwhile, opponents went 19-for-37 (51.4 percent) against EIU. Thus, it’s little surprise that opponents controlled the clock and outscored Eastern 92-24 in the often deciding third quarter.

“We made some changes on defense, to not get beat on different things, but with 10 returners on defense it was good to keep a lot of the main things the same. We want to play fast and physically,” said Bohanek, who in Johnson’s absence, is EIU’s top returning tackler.

“Take 25 is our motto. The goal is to have 25 takeaways by the end of the season,” said Gristick, the former Panther linebacker who helped EIU win back-to-back OVC championships in 2012 and 2013.

Ex-NBAer turned college golfer JR Smith named North Carolina A&T’s Academic Athlete of the Yearon April 26, 2022 at 5:07 am

Who needs 3s when you can score a 4.0? In the fall of 2021, 16-year NBA veteran JR Smith enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University and joined the golf team as a walk-on. Now, in his second semester at the HBCU, the two-time NBA champion is already earning accolades in the classroom.

On Monday, the 36-year-old — who was originally slated to play basketball at North Carolina before jumping from St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, New Jersey, to the NBA draft in 2004 — was named the Aggies’ Academic Athlete of the Year.

The news comes a week after apparel brand Lululemon signed Smith to be its golf ambassador through a name, image and likeness deal. The athlete known to hoops fans as “JR Swish” is the first male golfer to sign a brand ambassador deal with Lululemon.

In January, Smith signed with Excel Sports Management for NIL representation. At the time, Smith’s agent, Lance Young, told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that there was high interest from golf apparel and equipment manufacturers in sponsoring the enormously popular (6.2 million followers on Instagram alone) college athlete.

Smith first revealed that he was excelling in the classroom at the end of the fall semester. On Dec. 14, Smith took to social media to share he had achieved his goal of earning a 4.0 grade-point average.

In a video posted the same day, Smith was clearly emotional. “I can’t even describe the feeling,” he said. “A lot of hard work went into that s—.”

Smith — who won titles with LeBron James in 2016 as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers and in 2020 with the Los Angeles Lakers — credited a conversation with Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Allen as the catalyst for his decision to petition the NCAA to be eligible to play.

Somewhere out there, Jesus Shuttlesworth is beaming.

Blackhawks finally hold lead, reward fans with win over Flyers

Compelling the Blackhawks to win for the sake of pride didn’t work for interim coach Derek King on Saturday against the Sharks.

So King instead spent Monday compelling the Hawks to win for the sake of the 18,642 fans in the United Center. This time, he got his wish: the Hawks held off the Flyers 3-1 in their penultimate home game of the season.

“We got a little risky at times, but the fans like it,” King said. “We talked about [trying to] finish right at home, get the fans out of their seats, give them something [so] that — when they walk out here and get in their cars –they’re talking about our team, about how they competed or how they won the game. That’s all we can ask for.”

The victory was just the Hawks’ 13th in 40 home games this season; only the league-worst Canadiens and Coyotes (10 each) have fewer home wins.

But at least this better-than-expected crowd was able to get excited –particularly early on, when Erik Gustafsson and Jonathan Toews (right out of the penalty box) both scored in the game’s first seven minutes.

Rock-solid goaltending from Kevin Lankinen, who absorbed rebounds well en route to stopping 33 of 34 shots, and a third-period insurance marker by Alex DeBrincat helped them maintain the lead.

Successfully doing so snapped the Hawks’ remarkable streak of blowing 14 straight leads over the past month.

“We were [saying], ‘We’ve got to get it deep,'” Gustafsson said. “We know they want to flip it out. Their forwards go in the zone right away if they get a chance. We just tried to play simple: get in, get out, and be a five-man unit out there. We did a pretty good job.”

Injury updates

Connor Murphy (concussion) and Kirby Dach (right shoulder sprain) both participated in non-contact jerseys in morning skate.

But King said he doesn’t expect any of the Hawks’ currently injured players –a group which also includes MacKenzie Entwistle (shoulder) –to return for the final two games.

Strome for Masterton

Dylan Strome is the Blackhawks’ nominee for the 2022 Bill Masterton Trophy, as chosen and announced Monday by the Chicago chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.

The Masterton trophy is awarded annually to the NHL player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.”

Permanently cast aside by ex-coach Jeremy Colliton, Strome was given a fresh start in November by King but was also challenged by King to improve his work ethic.

He earnestly followed through on that challenge. He has been one of the brightest spots of the second half, tallying 40 points in his last 45 games, while maintaining his reputation as one of the Hawks’ most well-liked guys.

“Early in the year, it was a tough time [for him], and he was still positive in the locker room, being a good teammate,” DeBrincat said Monday about Strome. “That goes a long way with your teammates. You don’t want a grumpy guy in the locker room and ‘poor me’ attitude. He was always ready to go to work and battle. And then he gets hot, he’s on fire, and he really helps our team a lot. It’s nice to see him get some recognition.”

Golden Knights forward Jack Eichel, whose artificial disc replacement surgery helped permanently open a new field of medicine to hockey players, and Canadiens goalie Carey Price, who spent October in a residential treatment facility for substance use and battled back to start four games this month, are two of the most compelling nominees around the league.

Grizzlies’ Morant the NBA’s Most Improved Playeron April 26, 2022 at 1:10 am

Ja Morant has been named the NBA’s most improved player after a season in which the Memphis Grizzlies point guard went from future star to superstar.

In his third year, Morant was named an All-Star starter and averaged career bests of 27.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game to go along with 6.7 assists.

Though listed at just 6-foot-3 and 174 pounds, Morant put together a highlight reel packed with spectacular dunks and finishes at the rim, and high-flying blocks.

Morant received 221 points (38 first-place votes) from a global panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters, according to the league’s news release. San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray finished second with 183 points, and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland finished third with 178.

The improvement Morant displayed helped the Grizzlies win 18 more games this season compared to last and go from playing their way in to the postseason last year to being the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference after a 56-26 regular season.

Bulls’ Caruso in concussion protocol ahead of G5on April 25, 2022 at 11:48 pm

CHICAGOChicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso is in the NBA’s concussion protocol and is questionable for Game 5 of the first-round playoff series at Milwaukee, coach Billy Donovan said Monday.

The Bucks lead 3-1 and will try to wrap up the series at home on Wednesday. Milwaukee won the past two games in Chicago by a combined 54 points.

Caruso took an inadvertent hit to the face from the Bucks’ Jevon Carter while trying to get around a pick by Giannis Antetokounmpo late in the second quarter on Sunday. He exited with a bloody nose.

Arguably Chicago’s best defender, Caruso was limited to 41 games in the regular season after spending his first four years with the Los Angeles Lakers. He missed seven weeks because of a broken wrist following a hard foul by the Bucks’ Grayson Allen during a game in Milwaukee in January.

Blackhawks’ Alex DeBrincat reflects on another season of individual success, team failure

One can only hope Alex DeBrincat’s career doesn’t go the way Jeff Skinner’s has.

Skinner, the longtime Hurricanes-turned-Sabres forward, holds the NHL record for most regular-season games played without a playoff appearance at 851 (and counting). He’s currently finishing his 12th NHL seasonwithout sniffing the postseason even once.

DeBrincat, who played just his 366th career game for the Blackhawks on Monday, is certainly a long way behind Skinner. He’s also already ineligible for that ignominious distinction, having technically played in nine playoff games during the 2020 postseason bubble.

But if not for the COVID-prompted exception that included those 12th-placed Hawks in the postseason, DeBrincat would be finishing up his fifth full NHL season without one real playoff berth. The Hawks have indeed posted a losing record in all five of his seasons.

They appear destined for at least another couple years of losing records and playoff misses ahead, too, even though DeBrincat personally has no choice but to blindly pray that won’t be the case.

“It’s definitely frustrating,” he said Monday. “But you’ve got to work for what you get. So hopefully we can work these next couple years, get a good roster and win some games. Anytime you can win games, you have more fun in the locker room. … These next couple years, we can build that identity to get back to where we want to be, and hopefully it’s sooner than later.”

It’s easy to feel sympathy for DeBrincat because the Hawks’ struggles aren’t his fault. He has objectively produced yet another terrific season.

He has reached the 40-goal plateau for the second time in his career, tied a career high with 76 points (entering Monday) and –due to his gradual defensive improvement –been used more diversely than ever before, setting a new career high of 20:48 ice time per game.

His chemistry with Patrick Kane and Dylan Strome has helped them record the third- and second-highest scoring seasons of their respective careers, as well.

“There [have been] some good parts of the year [and] some bad parts, obviously,” DeBrincat said. “Overall, I wish we would’ve had more success as a team. You can’t really be happy when you don’t make the playoffs. Whether you [individually] had a good year or not, it’s not fun.”

Despite the frustration caused by the Hawks’ struggles, DeBrincat seems committed for the long haul.

He’ll become eligible for another contract extension in July — once he enters the final 12 months of the three-year extension (at $6.4 million per) that he signed in 2019 –and he said he’s “open to talking” about an extension “whenever” the Hawks are.

He acknowledged general manager Kyle Davidson will “have a lot of things to do probably before” getting to that item on the agenda. But Davidson will meet with DeBrincat, and every other Hawks player, during exit interviews next week.

Meanwhile, DeBrincat and his wife, Lyndsey, are expecting their first child next month, ruling out the possibility of him participating in the World Championships in Finland. Besides learning fatherhood, he plans to use the summer to continue improving his shot and footwork, plus anything else Davidson asks him to work on.

Far more uncertain than DeBrincat’s status is whether Kane and Strome will return next season.

Strome is a pending restricted free agent who seems 50-50, at best, to be re-signed at the $4 million-or-higher price he’ll likely demand. And Kane, along with Jonathan Toews, need to decide if they want to stick around through the rebuild.

“We’ll talk [about that] maybe a little in the future, but that’s kind of their decision,” DeBrincat said. “It doesn’t really affect me. I’m still young. I want to help bring this team to the playoffs and win. I’m here to do whatever I can.”

Everything happens under the retractable glass roof, so the couple can indulge with family and friends in Peruvian and Argentinian street food-inspired small plates and dance underneath the stars with a drink in hand to sultry beats.
