Report: Williams named top coach after Suns’ riseon May 9, 2022 at 11:32 pm

Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams has been named NBA Coach of the Year, the Associated Press reported Monday, citing a source familiar with the decision.

The league is expected to make an official announcement later Monday, although Suns stars Devin Booker and Chris Paul appeared to break the news on social media earlier.

The award comes a year after Williams finished second in voting, just 11 points behind winner Tom Thibodeau of the New York Knicks.

Under Williams, the Suns finished with an NBA-best 64-18 regular-season record and earned the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Before the past two seasons under Williams, it had been 10 years since the Suns had finished with at least 50 wins in the regular season, and last year’s NBA Finals trip was their first since Charles Barkley led them there in 1993.

Last month, Williams was honored with the National Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year award for the second straight season.

Williams, 50, is in his third season in Phoenix and his eighth overall as an NBA coach, including five with the New Orleans Pelicans (2010-15). He is a career 322-299.

Matt Foster is becoming a top bullpen option for the Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox are currently on a 6 game winning streak and have improved to 14-13 here with a hot start in May. The pitching staff continues to carry this team to close victories as they wait for the offense to heat up.

While the starters have been very good, the team’s bullpen has been stellar during the stretch.  Liam Hendriks is doing what he was paid to do, save games.  But the real surprise, is the re-emergence of third year reliever Matt Foster.

After a great rookie season in 2020, where Foster posted a stellar ERA of 2.20 with 6 wins and 31 strikeouts, Foster struggled immensely in his second year with the White Sox.

Sophomore Slump in 2021

Foster posted an ERA over 6 last season, giving up 9 homers in 39 innings pitched.  He often found himself pitching in games that were blowouts and hardly ever in situations of high leverage.  In 2021, Foster also had trouble staying healthy throughout the 162 game season.

Manager Tony La Russa could not trust him to pitch effectively in high leverage situations.  In fact, Foster did not even make the post season roster last year for the White Sox.

A New and Improved Foster

So far this season, Foster has not only improved from his horrible 2021 season, but he has outperformed his 2020 season as well.  The stats Foster is posting thus far is hardly sustainable long term, but he certainly has earned the trust of La Russa.

Here are Matt Foster’s numbers in the 12 appearances he has made this season: A 0.71 ERA, with 10 strike outs, with only 1 run and 7 hits surrendered.  The numbers are simply out of this world.  Foster has commanded his fastball with ease and has mixed it up with his slider very well.  His fastball has reached up to 97 MPH.  The 3rd year reliever is pitching with extreme confidence in the toughest of situations.

There are 4 key appearances that Foster has made in the past week to solidify his spot to pitch late in games.

May 3rd against the Chicago Cubs

in the first game of the crosstown series against the Chicago Cubs, Foster came into the game in the bottom of the 8th inning with the White Sox up 3 to 1.  He recorded a hold, striking out 1 and handing the game over to Hendriks for the save.  This was a clear sign for La Russa to keep putting Foster in high leverage situations.  The very next game, the White Sox skipper did just that.

May 4th against the Chicago Cubs

The following night was a much more stressful situation that Foster came into pitch.  Foster came into the game during the 8th inning once again after teammate Aaron Bummer was pulled by La Russa.  The Cubs had runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out.  After recording the 2nd out, Foster got the final out on a 3-2 pitch, striking out Ian Happ with a fastball looking.  Once again, he handed the game over to Hendriks in the 9th to close it out.

May 6th against the Boston Red Sox

In this appearance, Foster pitched the 6th inning this time around.  The result was the same, another hold.  In this outing Foster walked a batter and recorded 0 strikeouts.  Nevertheless, he gave up soft contact and gave up 0 hits in his inning of work.  Being able to come in and execute your pitches no matter if it is the 6th inning or the 8th inning, shows how reliable Foster has been in 2022.

May 7th against the Boston Red Sox

To cap off an amazing week of pitching performances, Foster saved his best for last.  Once again, Foster entered the game in the 8th inning with the White Sox holding on to a slim one run lead.  The heart of the order was due to bat for the Red Sox.  The result was spectacular as Foster struck out the side to end the 8th. He struck out Trevor Story on a biting slider, Rafael Devers on a high fastball at 96 MPH, and Xander Bogaerts on another slider.

The week Foster had pitching is simply remarkable.  It solidifies a bullpen that is already one of the best in baseball.  With reliever Joe Kelly set to join the team May 9th when they kick off a 3 game series at home versus the Cleveland Guardians, it becomes interesting to see how La Russa will continue to use Foster moving forward.

Make sure to check out our WHITE SOX forum for the latest on the team.

Williams suggests special seats for player familieson May 9, 2022 at 10:38 pm

Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams said the NBA should consider having a special section in the stands reserved for the families of visiting teams in the wake of Chris Paul‘s family being harassed during Sunday’s playoff game in Dallas.

The incident happened during Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals between the Dallas Mavericks and Suns. Several family members of Paul were in attendance, and were harassed and physically contacted by a fan in the crowd, sources told ESPN on Sunday night.

Paul addressed the disturbing Mother’s Day incident on social media following the Mavericks’ 111-101 win that tied the series at 2-2.

He tweeted: “Wanna fine players for saying stuff to the fans but the fans can put they hands on our families … f— that!!”

Paul’s mother, Robin, as well as his wife, Jada, and their two children watched the game in seats close behind the Suns’ bench at American Airlines Center, sources told ESPN. His mother had hands put on her and his wife was pushed, a source familiar with the situation told ESPN, and Paul’s kids were there to witness it. Paul’s wife was also followed up the aisle when she left her seat, a separate source said.

“They felt very unsafe,” a source familiar with the situation told ESPN.

“It’s a hard one, because it’s happening more and more,” Williams said Monday at Suns practice. “The situations are getting to a place now where I really feel like families, who are there to support their loved ones, need to be protected a bit more. Whether or not we have to give these people a section, a suite, something has to be done.

2 Related

“Because we can’t wait for it to get to a level or two higher, before we do what we need to do. Yesterday was unnecessary.”

The Mavericks said after the game that they were aware of the incident between a fan and Paul’s family at American Airlines Center. Williams said he didn’t know the extent of the harassment in real time because the game was still being played.

“It was unacceptable behavior and will not be tolerated,” the Mavericks said in a statement. “The Mavericks, along with American Airlines Center, swiftly removed the fan from today’s game.”

Paul didn’t speak to the media after Monday’s practice.

Suns forward Cam Johnson said a similar situation happened in Milwaukee last season during the NBA Finals when his girlfriend was hit in the back of the head and had beer spilled on her. Johnson said he didn’t hear about the incident until after the game.

“It was kind of a big scene,” Johnson said. “It really frustrated me.”

Johnson said security in Milwaukee handled the situation and that the fan was kicked out of the game. He said security can only do so much to keep families safe.

“A large part of the responsibility has to be on fans,” Johnson said. “They just can’t act that way. There’s no other way around it. You’ve got to address the problem with the real problem. It’s that a fan can’t go up to someone’s mother and harass them.”

Game 5 is Tuesday night in Phoenix, with the series tied, 2-2.

“I have to stress that I don’t think this is indicative of the fans in Dallas,” Williams said. “They’re cheering for their team. I’ve never had this kind of incident at that arena, even going back to the old spot, Reunion Arena, never.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Cubs’ Frank Schwindel to quickly rejoin team after being optioned to Triple-A

SAN DIEGO — The day after the Cubs announced they were optioning Frank Schwindel to Triple-A, the first baseman was set to rejoin the team in San Diego, a source confirmed to the Sun-Times on Monday morning.

The corresponding move to make room for Schwindel on the active roster was not immediately clear.

“This is a league [where] you’ve got to produce, and he’s working on some things,” manager David Rosssaid when the Cubs optioned Schwindel Sunday. “We’re just going to take a little bit of the bright lights off and let him work through some things.

“Hopefully it’s not very long, and he gets back and finds his rhythm and is able to come back and help us out real soon.”

Real soon, indeed

Schwindel, a fan favorite late last season when he hit .342 for the Cubs, has put together a slow start to this season at the plate, batting .209 in 91 at-bats.

White Sox activate 3B Moncada, reliever Kellyon May 9, 2022 at 7:39 pm

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox activated two key players from the injured list on Monday as third baseman Yoan Moncada and new reliever Joe Kelly are ready to make their first appearances of the season, the team announced in a press release.

Moncada, 26, has been out since the final days of spring with a right oblique strain while Kelly, 33, has been recovering from a biceps nerve injury. He signed a two-year, $17 million deal with the team in mid-March and should fill a middle- to late-inning reliever role.

The switch-hitting Moncada has been a big part of the White Sox two playoff teams the past two seasons but hasn’t had an OPS above .800 since 2019. His power numbers dipped last season, as Moncada hit just 14 home runs but he compiled a career high in walks with 84.

The White Sox are last in the majors with just 58 walks in 27 games. To make room on the roster for the moves, the team placed lefty reliever Aaron Bummer on the injured list with a right knee strain while sending infielder Jake Burger to Triple-A Charlotte.

Aaron Bummer to IL, Jake Burger to Charlotte as White Sox reinstate Yoan Moncada, Joe Kelly

The White Sox returned third baseman Yoan Moncada and right-handed reliever Joe Kelly from the injured list Monday while placing left-hander Aaron Bummer on the 15-day IL (retroactive to Saturday) with a right knee strain.

Jake Burger, who played 21 games at third base in Moncada’s absence, was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte. Danny Mendick, who can play three infield positions including shortstop as well as the outfield, provides more defensive versatility than Burger, who is batting .239/.276/.352 with two homers and two doubles in 77 plate appearances.

Burger has four hits in his last 24 at-bats, and struck out 14 times in his last six games, including six in his last two games in Boston.

Mendick, who played shortstop in the Sox’ 3-2 win against the Red Sox Sunday as manager Tony La Russa rested Tim Anderson, is batting .217/.280/.435 with a home run in 11 games.

Bummer, regarded as the Sox’ top left-hander, has experienced a bumpy start to the season with a 4.91 ERA with eight walks in 11 innings. He did not allow a run or walk in his last four appearances, including his most recent one Friday in Boston.

“His next to last pitch the last time, he felt a little tug in the back of his knee,” La Russa said Sunday.

Bummer’s absence leaves rookies Bennett Sousa (4.82 ERA in 12 games) and Tanner Banks (1.29 ERA in eight games) as the lefties in the bullpen. Sousa recorded one out for his first career save Sunday.

Moncada will start and bat second when the Sox play the Guardians at Guaranteed Rate Field Monday night, La Russa said Sunday. Moncada strained his right oblique on April 5, before the Sox final spring training game. He was 7-for-22 with two homers, one double and two walks in six games and 25 plate appearances during his rehabilitation assignment at Charlotte.

The Sox signed Kelly to a two-year, $17-million contract March 14 knowing the start of his season would be delayed as he recovered from a right biceps nerve issue encountered last season, when he posted a 2.48 ERA in 44 games with the Dodgers.

Kelly made thre scoreless and hitless relief appearances at Charlotte, striking out three batters over three innings.

Game Recap

A rare offensive explosion from the Iowa lineup. The effort was led by the two guys who have provided the most consistent production for the team throughout the first month. P.J. Higgins doesn’t provide much power but he’s been above .300 all season, and his 5-for-5 effort yesterday pushed his average to .377 on the year. Jared Young has been a bit on the opposite end of the spectrum. He hasn’t hit for much of an average, but he’s brought the power. His home run brought his total to 8 on the season, second best in the system behind new teammate Nelson Velazquez. Young also doubled, his third over his last two games.

Jared Young’s comeback the past two seasons has been amazing. It is like 2019 never existed pic.twitter.com/3KtBQIY5ug

— Todd (@CubsCentral08)

Iowa also got an impressive outing from their most consistent starter. Caleb Kilian has had to work around traffic in several of his starts, but he’s mostly kept the opposition off the board, thanks in large part to the ability to miss bats at an above average level while keeping a lot of the contact he does allow on the ground. The righty has given up just one home run over 24.2 innings. He mixes speeds well, the new curveball has given him another viable weapon, and he just seems like he always has a plan of attack available to him. But his command hasn’t been as sharp as last year, and I’m sure the Cubs are hoping that will come around as the season progresses.

I’m not sure if he could come in and dominant MLB hitters right out of the gate but I don’t see him struggling any worse than the current staff either. I know fans are anxious to see him in Chicago, especially given the big club’s recent results, but I would expect the Cubs to slow play it with Kilian a bit. He’s still being limited to 4-5 innings and 75-85 pitches per start. He threw just 100.1 innings last year (plus a handful of starts in the AFL). I would expect them to slowly stretch him out in Iowa while controlling his innings load over the 1st half, while they let Wade Miley and Alec Mills work their way back into game shape and continue to showcase Drew Smyly. Once trade interest picks up in those veterans Kilian should be a ready replacement.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Andrelton Simmons (shoulder) started at DH in his second rehab outing. He was once again removed after getting four at bats. Cubs are clearly not pushing him too hard. My guess is he will require a couple of more rehab appearances this week, maybe trying to get him back-to-back starts in the field before heading to Chicago next weekend.

Stephen Gonsalves was forced to leave with one out to go in the 9th because of an injury. Ben Leeper came on to finish the game.

Brendon Little made his 2022 debut with a scoreless inning. The 94-95 and good slider that put him in line (before injury) for 40-man consideration last September appears to be back.

Game Recap

His final line doesn’t leap out at you, but Cam Sanders picked up right where he left off in his last start. He was unhittable in his previous outing and through his first four innings yesterday allowed only a pair of weak singles. His control wasn’t as sharp this time around though. He did issue a couple of early walks and thren uncorked his second wild pitch with a runner on in the 5th. He’d eventually give up a two-run homer before being lifted because of pitch count later in the inning.

Barons’ anncr: scout told me if Cam comes anywhere close today to what he did Tuesday, I’m putting him down as a major league pitcher.

Sanders seems to have a lot of confidence in his SL right now, shaking off other pitches in 2-strike counts. A prime example from today: pic.twitter.com/9fFlv06Uba

— Itsacon (@thats_so_cub)

May 8, 2022

Consistency remains the one thing holding him back. The stuff is good. And in many innings he can put it where he needs to. But not often enough where I can easily see him projecting as a SP in the Majors. It’s not out of the question, but his best role may end up as the multi-inning reliever the Cubs have found successful with Keegan Thompson, Justin Steele, and Adbert Alzolay in recent seasons.

Anncr: “Wow. His stuff is just dirty.” pic.twitter.com/NZqsam79C2

— Itsacon (@thats_so_cub)

May 9, 2022

The Cubs were saved from potentially losing Sanders in the cancelled Rule 5 Draft last offseason. They won’t be so lucky again. Sanders will need to be added to the 40-man this fall, which means the Cubs could jump the gun and add him in the 2nd half of the season and potentially utilize him in Chicago as a replacement for a traded starter or reliever. In the more immediate future, my guess is he heads to Iowa in the next round of promotions.

Sanders wasn’t the only story yesterday. Christopher Morel continues to break out offensively, and could very well being joining Sanders with a move to Iowa soon. And we already know he can field:

Yonathan Perlaza has also taken advantage of the playing time opened up by the recent promotions of Nelson Velazquez and Nelson Maldonado. He recorded the team’s only extra base hit yesterday and has now reached base multiple times in each of his last four games (5-for-10, 2 2B, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, 4 BB, HBP, SB).

Game Recap

D.J. Herz only threw 50 pitches yesterday, but made them count. His control had been off in his previous couple of outings, but he righted himself in this one. He breezed through 2.1 shutout innings, setting the tone for the South Bend bullpen as the team recorded their second straight shutout. Bailey Reid, Eduarniel Nunez, Nicholas Padilla, and Jeremiah Estrada each made quick work of Peoria batters. Other than Estrada providing a scare by walking the bases loaded in the 9th, Peoria never really threatened in any other inning.

Game Recap

Take away one rough outing on April 19th (7 runs, 4 earned in 0.2 IP) and Luis Devers has been as solid as any pitcher in the system so far this year. Since that game Devers has struck out 16, walked just 2, and allowed just 4 earned runs over 14 innings. He was the ACL club’s most consistent starter last season, and he’s shown average or better stuff in the little bit I’ve seen of him this year. I’ll be sure to give him a closer look once Myrtle Beach returns home and I get a better camera view.

In Game 1, the Pelicans offense once again came up with a big inning to pull away from the opposition. This time it was a five-run 3rd featuring a sac fly by Cole Roederer, then back-to-back-to-back hits by Kevin Alcántara, Malcolm Quintero, and Juan Mora. The final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch. Myrtle Beach added two more the next inning on an RBI double by James Triantos (his second double and third hit of the game). He would eventually score on a throwing error as Alcántara stole second base.

Game two was a little rougher on the pitchers. Tyler Schlaffer entered the year as a starter with some buzz, but it’s been a rough go thus far for him. He gave up two runs in 2.1 innings to raise his ERA to 6.30. Jose Gonzalez followed and didn’t fare any better, giving up three runs over 2.2 innings. An Ezequiel Pagan homer and Kevin Alcántara RBI double weren’t enough.

Speaking of Alcántara though, like Triantos, his bat seems to be heating up. These are two young guys with little experience tasked with performing in a pitcher’s league, so bumps in the road should be expected, but we are already seeing each make quick adjustments, which is a great sign.

Bears cut Ledarius Mack, sign six undrafted rookies

The Bears waived linebacker Ledarius Mack and signed six players who participated in their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis last weekend: Northern Arizona defensive end Carson Taylor, Ball State linebacker Christian Albright, Charlotte safety Jon Alexander, Temple long-snapper Antonio Ortiz, Western Michigan safety AJ Thomas and Ohio running back De’Montre Tuggle.

Mack, the brother of former Bears linebacker Khalil Mack, was the only veteran among six players cut. The others were rookies signed as undrafted free agents following the draft: Ohio State running back Master Teague, Southern Illinois wide receiver Landon Lenoir, Utah State wide receiver Savon Scarver, Miami safety Amari Carter and Purdue linebacker Jaylan Alexander.

With Mack cut, the Bears have 29 players remaining from the 63 who were on the roster (active, injured reserve, COVID-19 list) at the end of last season.
