Cubs rookie Suzuki (finger) placed on 10-day ILon May 31, 2022 at 12:40 am

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs placed rookie outfielder Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day injured list with a left ring finger sprain prior to the second game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Suzuki was injured in Thursday’s game against the Reds in Cincinnati when he stole second in the third inning and jammed his hand on the bag. He left the contest and has not played since.

Suzuki is batting .245 with four homers and 21 RBIs in 41 games. The roster move was retroactive to Friday.

The Cubs also designated veteran right-hander Robert Gsellman for assignment and selected the contract of left-hander Brandon Hughes from Triple-Iowa.

Gsellman is 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA in eight relief appearances, including a scoreless ninth inning in the first game. After six seasons with the Mets, the right-hander joined the Cubs as a non-roster invitee in spring training.

Hughes is 0-0 with a 2.57 and nine strikeouts for the Cubs in five relief appearances.

Inside Fine Arts Building, 125-year-old Studebaker Theater is reborn

Brittle scraps of Scotch tape stick to the marble walls, chipped and gouged from decades of comings and goings — and if it were any darker in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building on South Michigan Avenue, a flashlight might come in handy.

On the lobby’s west wall in small, tarnished lettering, it reads: “The Studebaker” above papered-over doors — a reminder of the building’s earlier life, stretching back to the late 1800s, when it housed Studebaker buggies and wagons.

But then, there’s a faint of odor of epoxy and the muffled growl of a drill, and it’s clear something is happening on the other side of those doors.

Inside, hidden almost in plain sight, is the newly renovated Studebaker Theater. With its glittering mirrored walls and ice-white lighting, the grand old theater once again radiates a kind of frosty warmth.

It held about 1,300 people when it opened, though some of those people were crammed in up to the rafters. These days, the Studebaker Theater will have a more comfortable 600 seats.

Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times

“It’s unique. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I don’t know that I’ve found a true comparison [in Chicago] because there are few theaters that are this grand but of this size,” said Jacob Harvey, the theater’s managing artistic director, leading a tour last week of the all-but complete multi-million dollar, two-year renovation.

By “this size,” Harvey means the relatively small capacity. It has 600 seats now, though when the theater first opened back in 1898, it could seat about 1,300 people. That’s back when patrons were jammed in up to the rafters. It opened only five years before the Iroquois Theater went up in flames during a performance, killing 602 of the 1,700 attendees.

“This was also the very early years of theater technology. There were still early experiments in terms of lighting and sound,” said Tanya Palmer, a Northwestern professor and Chicago theater historian. “A lot of what people would go to see were music-hall kind of experiences. … It was quite an event to go to this space.”

The spiffed-up Studebaker Theater is the new home of the NPR quiz show “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” The show is produced at WBEZ-FM (91.5).

Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times

The Studebaker, 410 S. Michigan Ave., hasn’t offered live theater on its stage since the early 1980s, when it was chopped up and converted into an art-house cinema. It closed in 2000.

But in its heyday, some of Hollywood and American theater’s biggest names appeared on stage, including Yul Brynner, Henry Fonda, Peter O’Toole, Louis Gossett Jr., and a young Martin Sheen, among many others.

Other somewhat less illustrious entertainers also performed there, including “Dr. Harlan Tarbell,” an illusionist famed for his “eyeless vision.”

On a recent tour, Harvey was keen to emphasis the state-of-the-art technology embedded, mostly unseen, within the theater. Where clunking metal levers once controlled the stage lighting, now it’s mostly done with computer touch screens.

“Basically everything is new, with the exception of the physical architecture itself,” Harvey said.

The mechanical and production systems may be the latest tech, but the grand architecture of the Studebaker Theater, which opened near the end of the 19th century, is unchanged.

Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times

What hasn’t changed, Harvey said, is the expectation the theater will return to its 125-year-old theater roots, offering locally produced shows and those coming from out of town.

In June, a new musical, “Skates,” opens, billed as “‘Grease’ meets ‘Hairspray,’ with a dash of Xanadu!'”

The Studebaker is also set to become the new home of the Chicago-based NPR quiz show, “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!”

Despite the pandemic and the theater’s history of sometimes struggling to find audiences, Harvey said now is as good a time as any to reopen.

“There is something incredibly ephemeral and uniting about being in the theater and having that shared community experience that people have been craving and are continuing to crave,” Harvey said.

The renovated Studebaker Theater will have 600 seats.

White Sox’ Kendall Graveman, Dylan Cease on restricted list for series in Toronto

The White Sox put right-handers Dylan Cease and Kendall Graveman on the restricted list before their three-game series which opens in Toronto Tuesday against the Blue Jays.

The Canadian government requires entrants to be vaccinated for COVID-19 at least 14 days prior to entry.

Cease started against the Cubs Sunday and wouldn’t have pitched in the series. Graveman is one of the Sox’ top relievers. Graveman owns a 2.78 ERA with 19 strikeouts over 22 2/3 innings and has two saves and 10 holds this season.

Right-hander Kyle Crick was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to fill Graveman’s void in the bullpen. Krick has pitched to a 5.18 ERA in five appearances with the Sox this season.

Also, Dallas Keuchel, who was designated for assignment Friday, was placed on release waivers.

Players who go on the restricted list because they are unvaccinated won’t get paid or accrue major league service time.

The beginning of the end of skyrocketing crime in Chicago and Cook? Who could lead funding of a slate of such crime fighters? Watch Berkowitz w/Fioretti on these state & local political/public policy issues: Web and Cable

The beginning of the end of skyrocketing crime in Chicago and Cook? Who could lead funding of a slate of such crime fighters? Watch Berkowitz w/Fioretti on these state & local political/public policy issues: Web and Cable

1. To reduce violent crimes sharply in Chicago and Cook County, we must treat criminals as criminals, not as victims. But Chicago Mayor Lightfoot, Cook County Board President Preckwinkle, State’s Attorney Foxx, Cook County’s Chief Judge Tim Evans & Cook County’s Sheriff  Dart refuse to do that, no matter the mayhem, violence, physical harm and death to people- and destruction of businesses and property- their policies cause in Chicago, Cook County and Illinois

2. In short- Lightfoot, Preckwinkle, Foxx, Evans, and Dart do not believe in real, effective, and pro-active policing. That is, they won’t employ a unified and sensible set of law enforcement policies to stop skyrocketing violent crime.

3. Such crime fighting policies require vigorous lawful and constitutional investigation of crimes, charges and arrest of individuals with probable cause they committed a crime, detention in jail imposed by judges (after being sought by assistant State’s Attorneys- not bonding out with little or nothing at stake from the accused) of those arrested repeatedly for violent crimes, vigorous prosecution (not continuous dropping of charges) by the State’s Attorney of the accused, followed by stiff and serious sentencing by judges if the accused is convicted, followed by incarceration (not probation and parole) for a length of time in prison that fits the crime.

4. Democrat Fioretti, a former two-term Chicago Alderman, could be appointed by the Cook County and Chicago GOP in July 2022 to be their candidate to stop Toni Preckwinkle (Cook County Dem Party Chair) in her November 2022 bid for a fourth term as Cook Country Board President.

******************

To watch the “Public Affairs” show w/Bob Fioretti discussing how to stop Chicago’s & Cook County’s lethal violence, please click here.

Or you can watch the show w/Bob Fioretti on cable in the City of Chicago on Ch. 21 (CAN TV):

Tonight, 8:30 pm and midnight.

Tomorrow night, 9:02 pm (as lead segment of the Illinois Channel two-hour block of programming airing around the State this week)

This Saturday morning, 9:02 am

This Sunday morning, 8:32 am (Ch 19)

************************

Jeff Berkowitz: “Bob, we are taping this on May 24th, we’ll find out about Paul Vallas perhaps this weekend, what if Paul ran for Mayor (Watch Vallas on a potential run), what if you ran for Cook County Board President…do you think you would have a team?”

*******************************

Many think Vallas and Fioretti could radically reduce crime by replacing Lightfoot (2023) and Preckwinkle (2022). Further, if the voters also tossed out Chief Judge Evans (79, 20-year Chief Judge) by voting not to retain him as a judge in November 2022, Foxx and Dart might get the message, giving Chicago and Cook County quite an impactful change on violent crime policy and crime reduction.

Would Ken Griffin help form and fund such a slate to reduce crime in Chicago and Cook County, which he says is one of his major policy goals? Inquiring minds want to know. Berkowitz hints in the show with Fioretti at this action by Illinois’ richest citizen, clocking in with a net worth of $30 billion.

White Sox’ top payroll producing mediocre results

Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is footing the bill on his highest White Sox payroll ever this season.

But he isn’t getting much bang for his buck.

Consider:

In the fourth season of a six-year, $43 million contract, Eloy Jimenez has played in 243 games of a possible 430 since signing his deal, including 11 this season because of his latest of numerous injuries, a torn hamstring requiring surgery. Jimenez’ recovery was stalled when he left the first game of his rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Charlotte after two at-bats with soreness in the hamstring area.

Lance Lynn, signed to a $39 million extension that pays $18.5 million this season and next, will miss the first 2 1/2 months of the season with a knee injury.

Yoan Moncada, earning $13 million this season in the third year of a five-year, $70 million extension, has played in 15 games in 2022.

Luis Robert, earning $6 million in the third year of a $60 million contract, has missed 13 games in 2022 because of groin and COVID issues after being limited to 68 games last season because of a torn hip flexor.

Reliever Joe Kelly signed a two-year, $17 million deal before the season and started it on the injured list with a biceps nerve injury. Kelly returnedtothe IL after straining a hamstring last week after just seven appearances and will be out at least a three weeks.

Catcher Yasmani Grandal, in the third year of a four-year, $73 million deal – the richest in franchise history – is at the center of the Sox’ offensive plight with his .168/.281/.226 hitting line, two homers and .508 OPS. Grandal was limited to 93 games last season because of knee problems that required surgery.

And Jos? Abreu, in the final season of a three-year, $50 million deal, is batting .238/.332/.400, the worst April-May of his nine-year career with the possible exception of 2016. Say this for Abreu: he doesn’t get hurt, which on this White Sox team sets him in a class by himself.

On Sunday, All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson went down with a right groin strain and will go on the injured list, a blow the injury-riddled Sox can hardly withstand. They’re 23-23, trailing the Twins by five games in the AL Central, and their offense has been awful.

Now they carry on with a six-game road trip against the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays without Anderson, a .354/.392/.503 hitter with five homers and an .895 OPS. Imagine where the Sox offense, which ranks 27th among 30 teams in OPS and on-base percentage and 28th in runs, would be without Anderson at the top.

We’re going to find out this week.

“I don’t want to,” manager Tony La Russa said Sunday, “because then it really strains your optimism to say we’re going to be OK.”

In the final year of a team friendly six-year, $25 million deal (with club options of $12.5 million and $14 million the next two seasons), Anderson, like Jimenez, Moncada and Robert after him, was locked in long term before his arbitration and free-agent years. He has had his share of injuries with two stints on the IL with hamstring issues last season and a high ankle sprain that caused him to miss more than a month in 2019.

Anderson had an MRI and was examined by doctors Monday, the results of which the Sox will share Tuesday. Whatever the outcome, it will be a matter of weeks before he returns. He’ll join Jimenez, Lynn, Kelly and Garrett Crochet on the IL Tuesday.

The Sox survived a barrage of injuries last season and won the AL Central with 93 victories. But they were 33-21 on May 31, and need a win Tuesday in Toronto to be above .500 going into June this season.

With a total payroll of $195 million, the seventh highest in the majors per Spotrac, mediocre in the prime year of a contention window is not what ownership had in mind.

There are four months of the season left to make it pay off.

Cubs doubleheader vs. Brewers filled with MLB debuts, Jonathan Villar to IL

The Cubs doubleheader against the Brewers Monday – a long day after a 12-inning game the day before – started with celebration.

“It’s been a morning of congratulating all the guys for being up here,” Cubs manager David Ross said after a series of call-ups. “Happy for a lot of those guys that have put in the hard work and who you get to reward to come up in an environment like today, beautiful day on a holiday weekend.”

Game 1 featured starting pitchers making their MLB debuts on both sides: right-hander Matt Swarmer for the Cubs and lefty Ethan Small for the Brewers.

“Reports are he’s been throwing the ball really well,” Ross said of Swarmer. “He’s made some adjustments in his game a little bit and is off to a good season – without giving anything away before the game.”

Cubs outfielder Nelson Vel?zquez also debuted, starting in right field as Seiya Suzuki continues to deal with a sprained left ring finger. And Anderson Espinoza was available out of the bullpen as the Cubs’ 27th man for the doubleheader.

The Cubs already had an open spot on the active roster, after placing reliever Chris Martin on the bereavement list Sunday. On Monday, they placed infielder Jonathan Villar on the 10-day IL with a mouth injury, retroactive to Friday.

Villar will need significant dental work after an exercise band snapped back and hit him in the mouth while working out.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Swarmer, the Cubs transferred reliever Ethan Roberts (right shoulder inflammation) from the 10-day IL to the 60-day.

Crow-Armstrong promoted

The Cubs promoted outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, their No. 3 prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, to High-A South Bend on Monday.

Crow-Armstrong was hitting .354 in Low-A Myrtle Beach, with 13 stolen bases.

Ok, let’s do this…

In: Mark Leiter Jr., Nelson Velazquez, Matt Swarmer

Out: Chris Martin (Bereavement List), Jonathan Villar (10-day IL), Wade Miley (15-day IL retro to May 26th)

Good for Matt Swarmer.
He’ll throw strikes.
He’s tall and and with an over the top delivery the ball comes from a unique arm angle and release point.
Pretty good slider.
Competitor.
Consistent.
I think he gives the Cubs 4-5 solid innings tomorrow.

— Michael Ernst (@mj_ernst)

May 29, 2022

How far has Matt Swarmer come? Two years ago, he was pitching in a men’s wood bat league full of college kids and retired players.

He’ll be a big league pitcher tomorrow.https://t.co/Rpnp3fiQha

— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch)

May 29, 2022

Anderson Espinoza, the lone healthy 40-man roster pitcher, has also been recalled from AA to function as the 27th man for the doubleheader today.

The Cubs have added Anderson Espinoza to the roster for today’s doubleheader.

If he gets into the game, he’ll join rare company. There cannot be many big league pitchers who had a four-year stretch during their MiLB careers where they didn’t get into an official game.

— JJ Cooper (@jjcoop36)

May 30, 2022

To make room on the 40-man roster for Swarmer, Ethan Roberts was transferred from the 15 to the 60-day IL.

That, I think, covers it.

But that isn’t the only big promotion news throughout the system…

AAA

Memphis 4, Iowa 2

Game Recap

Iowa fell behind early as the Redbirds pecked away at starter Luke Farrell for single runs in each of the first three innings. It was 4-0 heading into the 7th when the Cubs offense finally managed to threaten. The first two men reached and Iowa had the middle of their order coming up. But groundouts by Nick Madrigal and David Bote only managed to move one runner and bring one in. Nelson Maldonado followed with a single, but Dixon Machado was held up at 3rd. Both would be stranded when Robel Garcia popped out. Greg Deichmann did homer the following inning, but no other I-Cubs reached base in the 8th or 9th.

The I-Cubs did get continued good work from relievers Brendon Little and Erich Uelmen to help keep the game within striking distance in the late innings. Little threw 1.2 more scoreless innings, and the former 1st rounder has now run his scoreless streak to begin his season up to 9.2. He has been walking some guys, but the lefty has allowed just 3 hits thus far.

Erich Uelmen just struck out two in another scoreless outing for the @IowaCubs.

Um, it’s been a quiet resurgence but Jordan Nwogu has has a very nice run the last three weeks. It’s all coming together for him. Hopefully, it carries over to June. pic.twitter.com/heZFRN4N2m

And not to be overlooked, the birthday boy Pablo Aliendo knocked in a big run as well:

Why I love Pablo Aliendo…

This is one mature piece of hitting for a guy that turned 21 years old today. Happiest of birthdays, my friend!!! pic.twitter.com/0CzpjFOygl

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Celebrate! The Cubs have officially announced that Pete Crow-Armstrong will be joining South Bend. My guess is there will be a cascade of promotions for CF up the system, but no corresponding moves have been made official yet.

Game Recap

Not much to write about in this one. Lefty Luis Rodriguez dominated after starter Porter Hodge had his pitch count run up in the 2nd inning. Rodriguez isn’t overpowering but he’s got solid stuff and is one of those guys with great feel. He did not allow a hit over 4.2 innings of relief, while striking out 6. Hard throwing Frankie Scalzo Jr. followed with 1.2 hitless frames off his own.

Oh, and we got one last Low-A PCA highlight:

This Memorial Day, lets honor and remember Captain Humayun Khan and Sergeant La David Johnson

This Memorial Day, lets honor and remember Captain Humayun Khan and Sergeant La David Johnson

Each year more than 350 flags are set into a Field of Honor by Veterans Network Committee of Northern Illinois, every flag representing a service person killed in acton in Operation Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan.

This year the field is located next to Aldi’s at 3340 Three Oaks Rd, Cary, IL and the closing ceremony will be today at 6:00 PM.

As I sat in the middle of the field, as I do most years, I thought about the awful waste of human life. Each flag was tagged with the name of one of the soldiers who died, along with a short history of their lives and deaths. I never knew any of them, but I attended some of their funerals as a motorcycle escort.

Almost as tragic as their deaths is the way we’ve normalized and condoned disrespect for their sacrifice. More than just being shameful, it underscores the withering soul of America.

For his actions of selflessly protecting the men in his command in Iraq in 2004, 27-year old Captain Humayun Khan was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. You can read more about Captain Khan HERE.

25-year old Sergeant La David Johnson was part of an elite Army special forces group that got ambushed in Niger in 2017. Johnson was one of four U.S. servicemen killed in that ambush during a mission shrouded in mystery. You can read more about Sergeant Johnson HERE.

Johnson and Khan never met, but they had two things in common. They were both described as men who loved their country and neither one was White. Those are just facts.

Another fact is that Eddie Gallagher, a White Navy SEAL accused of war crimes and described by his team mates as pure evil was pardoned in 2019 by the president who attacked the Gold Star families of both Johnson and Khan. You can read about that HERE.

You can call that critical race theory, but they’re just facts and they seem to speak very clearly for themselves.

In 2016, Captain Khan’s parents, Khizer and Ghazala spoke out against the dystopian picture candidate Donnie Trump was painting of America, a picture that seemed to preclude non-White participants. Trump immediately went on the attack, excoriating Gold Star parents for standing up to message of racial hatred.

The men and women I rode with on missions escorting dead soldiers to their final resting places would once have suffered no such thing from anyone, not even a presidential candidate or the president himself.

That norm was shattered when Donnie took aim at John McCain, an undeniably patriotic and heroic America who endured the horrors of one the most brutal POW camps ever to intern American soldiers.

If you thought that Trump’s anti-McCain strategy would have been the end of him, we were both wrong.

In a phone call with Sergeant Johnson’s pregnant widow, Myeshia, Donnie told her that her husband knew what he signed up for. In the car with Mrs. Johnson was Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who confirmed Trump’s scornful message of condolence.

That episode ended with Trump’s Chief of Staff, John Kelly calling Congresswoman Wilson an empty barrel.

Take all this for what you will. Things have changed in America and not in a good way. Political opponents, people of color or other-than-usual sexual orientation have become mortal enemies.

If you’re of a mind to think about the sacrifices made for the lives we lead today, I would ask you to spend a moment thinking about the sacrifices of Captain Humayun Khan and Sergeant La David Johnson and their families. They deserved better from America.

In fact, don’t we all deserve better?
