Bulls, Zach LaVine agree to $215.2 million, five-year contract

Zach LaVine was never going to another team.

The two-time All-Star made that very clear both publicly and behind the scenes, as did the Bulls’ front office time and time again throughout the 2021-22 season.

That’s why it took less than 24 hours for the two sides to reach a verbal agreement on a max contract that will pay LaVine $215.2 million over the next five years.

According to a source, the Bulls and LaVine did have a formal meeting on Thursday — the first day teams could negotiate with free agents — and the guard also met with several other suitors. But it was the Bulls the entire time in his mind, and what he told his core teammates.

One source said that LaVine was so adamant about re-signing with the Bulls going into the offseason that he at first didn’t even want to go through the formality of taking a meeting with them, choosing to just hear what other organizations were offering.

Klutch Sports, however, wanted the guard to get the full free-agent experience before making his intentions known on Friday.

We all know that the West Loop is home to the best restaurants in the city, and that’s where you’ll find Omakase Yume. Chef Sangtae Park has devoted his culinary skills to Japanese cuisine, and has been an instrumental part of bringing vibrant new ideas to the Chicago restaurant industry. In opening Omakase Yume, Chef Park brings his expertise to groups of six at a time, making the meal extremely personal, delicious, and awe-inspiring. Here, the 16-course meal costs about $185 per person.

Kyōten, just west of Bucktown, is an Omakase restaurant that prioritizes the discipline, purity, and balance that coincides with sushi making. While staying close to the tradition of the meal, Chef Otto of Kyōten isn’t afraid to bend the rules a bit, taking his experience from elite restaurants like Nobu and Bar Masa to our very own city. The total experience can cost between $440 and $490 a person, depending if its a weekday or weekend, but the price is certainly worth the quality of ingredients and experience.

731 W Lake St, Chicago, IL 60661

If you’ve never dined at a Michelin Star restaurant and love fresh, hand-crafted sushim it’s time to make a reservation at Mako. This Omakase restaurant has one Michelin Star, an achievement that is hard to come by, making it one of the best fine dining experiences in the city. So far we’ve learned that Omakase dining can be wildly expensive because of the uniqueness of the menu, and that’s where Kai Zan comes in. Open in 2012, sushi chefs Melvin and Carlo Vizconde established a restaurant where Omakase style starts at about $90 per person, but definitely doesn’t lack in atmosphere, freshness, and flavor. Along with the Omakase dining, Kai Zan has a menu full of other Japanese delicacies like Wagyu fried rice, seafood soba, and short rib skewers. If you’re looking for a place with vegetarian sushi options, Kai Zan also has a nigiri assortment that is strictly vegetarian.

1829 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622

Mentioned in the Michelin Guide not once but three times, we have Arami. This $150 per person experience includes a 16-course Omakase tasting at their sushi bar. Included in the courses you’ll find a variety of seasonal appetizers, speciality nigiri, and freshly arranged handrolls. Recognized as Best Japanese Cuisine in Chicago from CBS and Chicago’s Best for Omakase from Zagat, Arami is undoubtedly one of the hottest omakase experiences in Chicago. Chicago Bulls agree to a max-deal with Zach LaVineVincent Pariseon July 1, 2022 at 4:28 pm

The Chicago Bulls and Zach LaVine’s contract conversation led the way for NBA people since the season ended. He was probably the biggest free agent out there and that made a lot of Chicago Bulls fans nervous.

However, you don’t have to be nervous anymore. LaVine has agreed to a five-year deal worth 215.2 million dollars with the Bulls. This is a maximum contract for him. There is a player option in year five but he is going to be a Chicago Bulls player going forward.

This is amazing news for both sides. Now, LaVine is super-rich and the Bulls get to keep their best player for a long time. It didn’t always look like LaVine was going to be worth this kind of money so it is good to see him there now.

The Bulls landed LaVine in the trade that sent Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves back in 2017. It is honestly amazing to see what LaVine has become since this trade as he has come a long way to become a player worthy of a max contract.

NBA All-Star Zach LaVine has agreed to a five-year, $215.2 million maximum contract to return to the Chicago Bulls, with a player option in Year 5, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told @TheAthletic @Stadium.

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 1, 2022

The Chicago Bulls and Zach LaVine are in agreement on a very large contract.

Now, it is time for the Bulls to make him worth every penny. There are some other really good players around him like DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball, Andre Drummond, Alex Caruso, Ayo Dosunmu, and Cobe White amongst others.

They have a long way to go before they are championship-caliber but they took a big step in 2021-22. Now that LaVine is locked up for a while, they shouldn’t be taking any steps back. It is about taking steps forward now.

It would be amazing to see them land Kevin Durant but that just feels like too much of a stretch. Instead, they should be looking at the other free agents and trade options to see who gives them the best chance to win it all.

Competing with the Milwaukee Bucks, Miami Heat, and Boston Celtics amongst others in the Eastern Conference needs to be their goal now. Having Zach LaVine there to help them will make it possible.

He needs to do just a bit better at staying healthy but outside of that, we know he is an elite player that deserves this money. Hopefully, this is the first step towards the next amazing Bulls playoff run.

Agent: Bulls, LaVine agree to 5-year, $215M dealon July 1, 2022 at 5:44 pm

The Chicago Bulls and Zach LaVine have agreed to a five-year, $215M max contract extension, Klutch Sports announced Friday.

LaVine, 27, has blossomed into a two-time All-Star in Chicago, where he arrived in the trade that sent Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2017, and — along with DeMar DeRozan — was the cornerstone of Chicago’s return to the Eastern Conference playoffs for the first time in five years this past season.

That also marked the first time in LaVine’s career that he’d reached the postseason.

2 Related

Now, he and the Bulls will look to continue that success moving forward, thanks to the two sides sitting down and hammering out a maximum contract extension to keep LaVine in Chicago through his prime.

Since coming to the Bulls in the Butler trade in 2017, LaVine has become a terrific offensive threat at every level. He’s averaged at least 23.7 points per game each of the past four seasons while being both a high volume and quality percentage 3-point shooter, in addition to his explosiveness attacking the rim, steadiness at the free throw line (at least five attempts and over 80 percent shooting the past four seasons) and ability to create for others (at least four assists per game).

This past season — coming off winning a gold medal with Team USA in Tokyo last summer — LaVine averaged 24.4 points, 4.5 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game, all while shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from 3-point range despite being hampered by a left knee injury that required surgery shortly after the season ended.

LaVine suffered a torn ACL in that same left knee in 2017, before being traded to Chicago later that same year alongside the 7th pick in that year’s draft, which became Lauri Markkanen and guard Kris Dunn.

Still, LaVine’s growth since arriving with the Bulls led to him making an All-Star appearance in each of the last two seasons.

And LaVine’s signature on a new deal is the culmination of a year-plus effort by Arturas Karnisovas, the team’s executive vice president of basketball operations, to construct a team around LaVine good enough to make Chicago a factor in the East again — and to convince the star to remain with Chicago.

As a result, the Bulls were busy last spring and summer. They acquired DeRozan, Nikola Vucevic and Lonzo Ball via trades, Alex Caruso in free agency and hired former Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan to coach the team.

The sum total of those moves pushed Chicago to the top of the Eastern Conference for much of last season before a series of injuries — notably to Ball, Caruso and second-year forward Patrick Williams — saw the Bulls fall down the standings. They eventually entered the playoffs as a sixth seed, losing in five games to the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the East playoffs.

ESPN’s Jamal Collier contributed to this report.

A bit Northwest of the city you’ll find Busse Woods. Not only is this a great spot for an Afternoon Picnic, but they also have a boat rental service to take a kayak out on one of their scenic lakes. Enjoy the peace of the water without hearing the El go by or cars honking non-stop, this is what the suburbs is all about. Just west of 290 and 90, getting to Busse Woods from the city is a breeze, and while Busse Woods is like taking a step out of society (in a good way), there’s tons of restaurants, shopping, and activities to check out after your kayak trip.

Did you know that just outside of Chicago, you can find a river that stretches 202 miles? Easily accessible and long enough for water-based activities like boating, swimming, and you guessed it, kayaking, there are tons of places to spend the day kayaking. Kayak Myak rentals have three Put-in points: Batavia, South Elgin, and Carpentersville.

You might not think that a trip to Batavia could involve so much fun on the water, but giving Kayak Myak a call will ensure that your day starts with a leisurely glide down the Fox River, and ends with the desire to take another trip as soon as possible.

Maple Lake in the Southwestern suburb of Willow Springs is quite possibly the most picturesque place to rent a kayak to spend a day. With single and tandem kayaking available, you can take some time to be alone, or, like me, force your mom to join you on a kayaking adventure that’ll leave you laughing and her annoyed.

Kayaks are first come, first serve and the facility highly encourages calling ahead to ensure you can get out on the water at your preferred time. After your water activity, spend some time walking about the forest preserve that surrounds Maple Lake to soak in the best sights and sounds that a summer day has to offer.

2436 S Washington St, Naperville, IL 60565

Being one of the biggest suburbs in the Chicagoland area, Naperville has it all. Visit the various restaurants and shops at the walkable downtown, or hit the water for a cool summer date. Naperville is a great place to go kayaking around Chicago thanks to the many breathtaking forest preserves, including Whalon Lake, where Naperville Kayak provides kayak rentals to anyone wanting to take to the water.

If you’re interested in fishing, Naperville Kayak does offer fishing kayaks for some time of peace catching fish and sun rays. The only other things you need to know are to bring sunscreen, wear a life jacket, and prepare to get wet!

July will save or officially break the Chicago White Sox seasonTodd Welteron July 1, 2022 at 2:30 pm

Use your (arrows) to browse

The Chicago White Sox have been a disappointment through much of the 2022 season. A season that started with World Series expectations has been a slog of injuries, poor defense, offensive struggles, terrible baserunning, and more losing than winning.

Entering July, the Chicago White Sox are one of the most disappointing teams in baseball.

The White Sox are four games under .500 and sit below the Minnesota Twins and the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central Division standings.

This was supposed to be a team that would run away with the AL Central Division. Instead, injuries have kept the Chicago White Sox from rolling out a consistent lineup. The injury problem feels a bit like Whack-A-Mole. One player returns from the injured list only for another player to get hurt and be sent to the IL.

This season has not been what Chicago White Sox fans envisioned, but despite that fact, there is still time.

The offense has been inconsistent throughout the season. The team is in the Major’s top-10 in batting average but it is in the bottom half in home runs, walks, and slugging percentage. The team is just two weight runs created plus (wRC+) less the league average-which is 100.

The Chicago White Sox defense is also in the bottom half of the league in fielding percentage and errors committed.

The pitching has been inconsistent throughout the season. The White Sox team ERA is in the league’s bottom ten. That is also because of numerous injuries to the bullpen and ace Lucas Giolito struggling in June.

That means the Chicago White Sox have a very slim margin for error. It does not help the margins when manager Tony La Russa keeps making questionable in-game decisions and lineup cards.

It seems like all hope is lost but the Sox have a month to make up some critical ground and get back into the thick of the division and playoff race.

Chicago Bears rank in the 30s, but not last in PFF’s NFL roster rankings

Chicago Bears roster is ranked low by PFF

The Chicago Bears have a lot of roster turnover from this overseason to overcome. With elite roster talents like Khalil Mack and Allen Robinson leaving for greener pastures, the Bears have a lot of spots that haven’t yet been filled. One analyst ranks the Bears roster in the 30s.

Major problems with the roster are seen at the wide receiver, offensive, and defensive line positions. The Chicago Bears didn’t have much capital coming into the 2022 NFL Draft for those positions. General manager Ryan Poles decided to focus on the secondary with the team’s first two picks in the second round.

PFF, partnering with ESPN, ranked all NFL team’s rosters for the 2022 season. They placed the Chicago Bears at 30th. Only the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans were ranked lower than the Bears. Here’s what PFF wrote about why the Bears are ranked so low:

Biggest strength: It shouldn’t be surprising for a team coming in at 30th overall on this list, but there isn’t a whole lot to choose from here. Chicago’s secondary has an opportunity to be much improved following the additions of Jaquan Brisker and Kyler Gordon in the draft and slot cornerback Tavon Young in free agency. But even that requires a fair bit of projection. Jaylon Johnson improved his PFF grade by nearly 10 points to 64.3 in his second season out of Utah, and the Bears will be looking for another jump this season.

Biggest weakness: Describing the supporting cast around Justin Fields entering this season as ugly might be putting it kindly. The Bears lost their two highest-graded offensive linemen (Jason Peters and James Daniels) from a unit that finished the 2021 season ranked 21st in overall PFF grade. And Chicago’s top three wide receivers on the depth chart are Darnell Mooney, Velus Jones Jr. and Byron Pringle. That’s putting a lot of pressure on Fields’ shoulders to carry the offense to success in 2022.

X factor for 2022: The 2022 campaign for the Bears will be about finding positives to take away from their young core of players, including Teven Jenkins at tackle. Jenkins played meaningful snaps in only three games as a rookie last year after missing the beginning of the season with a back injury. His first taste of action in Week 14 came with seven pressures allowed in a matchup against the Packers, but he settled in a bit in two matchups against the Vikings. A strong season from Jenkins in 2022 would go a long way toward raising the confidence level in this offensive line moving forward.

PFF is harsh on a lot of Chicago Bears players

Many Bears players are graded harshly on PFF paper. Only one defensive player—who’s not a rookie as they have a college rating—has a rating over 70. That would be EDGE Trevis Gipson with a 70.4 score. The second-best player on the defense would be Robert Quinn, so one only wonders where the defense would rank when he leaves the Bears.

The offensive rankings are porous, especially on the offensive line. PFF also ranks running back Khalil Herbert nearly 10 points higher than David Montgomery. So take that for what it’s worth. I think Montgomery is a better running back. But then again, PFF grades linebacker Roquan Smith with a 47.1 score. Seeing the result of these “number” crunches makes me glad these “statisticians” work in sports versus something critical like healthcare.

Chicago Bears need to improve the roster soon to have success

While a lot of the PFF rankings are made up of the type of fillings put in your breakfast sausage, it shouldn’t take an expert to predict the Bears will be bad this season. The Chicago Bears will be especially short at the offensive and defensive line positions. For Justin Fields to have any chance of success getting the football to suspect wide receivers, he’ll need a more sturdy line than the one that gave up 58 sacks last season. And this offensive line appears to be notably worse.

Andre Drummond could lead to a Kevin Durant trade for BullsVincent Pariseon July 1, 2022 at 1:00 pm

The Chicago Bulls, for a lot of the 2021-22 season, were one of the best teams in the NBA. With studs like Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball, Nikola Vucevic, Alex Caruso, Cobe White, and Ayo Dosunmu amongst others, they had an incredible year after a lot of building up to that roster.

However, in the second half of the season, they fell off a cliff a little bit. They still made it to the postseason but they had no chance against the defending NBA Champions in the Milwaukee Bucks as they lost to them in five.

Now, they are out there doing what they can to improve on the steps that they took in 2021-22. They saw what the flaws were down the stretch and now it is time to address them during the offseason. Free agency is open.

Andre Drummond signed as a free agent with Chicago on Thursday. Drummond played most of his career with the Detroit Pistons before making short stops with the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Brooklyn Nets, and Los Angeles Lakers.

This is a guy that has been a two-time NBA All-Star, a four-time leader in rebounds, and a one-time All-NBA selection. He also has the third most double-doubles in a single season in addition to the most rebounds over the last 10 seasons.

All of his skills are going to fit in perfectly with this Bulls team as the stuff he brings is desperately needed. What he does on his own is going to make them a much better and more well-rounded basketball team.

It would be amazing to see Kevin Durant put on a Chicago Bulls uniform.

There is another interesting layer to this signing. It could have nothing to do with it but his last season was the previously mentioned cup of coffee he had with the Brooklyn Nets. He was teammates with Kevin Durant who requested a trade out of there on Thursday.

Now, Durant is one of the very best players who ever put on a uniform. All 30 teams want to have him on their team as he can make them a champion within one season if the right pieces are around him. You’d think that the Bulls would be in a great spot with their roster if they landed him.

You never know if signing someone that was comfortable with Durant as recently as a year ago is a good way to make him approve a trade to the Bulls but you just never know. Obviously, it is a long shot for any team to think that they are getting him but anything is possible.

Acquiring him in a trade would be the coolest thing to happen to the Bulls in a long time. Regardless of this possibility, adding a player like Drummond automatically makes them a much better team which is a plus right there.

Chicago Bulls are now the favorites to land Danilo GallinariRyan Heckmanon July 1, 2022 at 1:30 pm

Thursday night, the Chicago Bulls began the NBA free agency period by bringing in veteran big man Andre Drummond, filling a huge need for them off the bench.

While Drummond comes in as one of the best rebounders in the game, the Bulls’ next priority is to find scoring and three-point shooting off the bench. The way it’s looking, that could happen very soon.

K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports tweeted that the Bulls are one of the finalists for former Atlanta Hawks forward Danilo Gallinari.

Furthermore, some sources are now saying that Chicago is the favorite to land Gallinari.

Bulls currently favorite to land Danilo Gallinari, per sources. Chicago is offering a 2yr, $15M deal and Gallo favors length of deal/role over money. Boston, Miami, Lakers, Wolves still in the mix but the Bulls are the favorite. Boston offered a 1yr/$6.5M deal, per sources

— Davide Chinellato (@dchinellato) June 30, 2022

If the Chicago Bulls can add Danilo Gallinari, then their free agency quest is already a success.

Gallinari hit free agency by way of the San Antonio Spurs after he was traded in the deal where Atlanta acquired All Star guard Dejounte Murray. Immediately following the trade, the Spurs waived Gallinari, allowing him to find a home of his choice.

Johnson’s report included the Boston Celtics as another favorite for Gallinari. However, the Celtics were only offering one year according to Johnson, and that’s what makes the Bulls’ deal more appealing.

The 33-year-old Gallinari has been one of the best three-point shooters in the league for years now, and adding his scoring ability gives this Bulls bench exactly what they have been lacking.

Guys like Javonte Green, Derrick Jones Jr. and Troy Brown Jr. weren’t exactly known for their scoring. But, Gallinari is a guy who can come in off the bench and score in bunches if need be.

If this deal happens, the Bulls essentially replace Tony Bradley’s minutes with Drummond’s and make Gallinari the first man up for Patrick Williams. The two of them will compliment each other well, too, being that Drummond is more of the rebounder and rim protector and Gallinari can score.

Beyond these two guys, the next order of business is to finalize the contract extension for Zach LaVine, who wasn’t going to sign right away Thursday night. But, he appears to want to enjoy the process. Most reports have believed that LaVine will end up back in Chicago, though.

Re-signing LaVine while adding two excellent veterans like Drummond and Gallinari make this Bulls team even better than it was last year. Now, fans will just be hoping to see a healthy squad come training camp. If this roster is healthy, then surely the Bulls can go further than the first round next season.
