Sky in preliminary talks with Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts about investing in franchise

Sky principal owner Michael Alter said ahead of the 2022 season that adding investors to the Sky franchise was top of mind for him.

Those additions are starting to take shape with Alter confirming that the Sky and Cubs co-owner Laura Rickets have had preliminary conversations regarding her becoming an investor in the WNBA franchise.

Alter said last March the timing is perfect to add investors because the Sky have a valuable story to tell.

Alter said there are always things the Sky can do better as an organization, but they don’t need to do anything radically different to draw free agents. He added that the franchise’s culture has kept players in Chicago and attracted top free agents.

Still, there is a widening gap between teams regarding player experience and amenities, and the Sky have a reputation as being in the bottom tier.

Ricketts, as a Sky investor, could bring ideas like those that helped turn the Cubs around.

The Cubs were MLB’s perpetual “Lovable Losers” when the Ricketts family bought the team from Tribune Co. in 2009. Though the team has struggled recently, the club had a string of successful years culminating in a World Series title in 2016.

The Ricketts family has also remade the area around Wrigley Field, including the construction of a hotel across from the ballpark, the development of Gallagher Way and plans to add a sportsbook to the stadium.

After putting her popcorn in the microwave she went to use the bathroom and ‘opened the door and did a quick turnaround because I saw this thing in there and quickly shut the door!’ she said.The thing? An iguana.”

Iconic Arts School “Idyllwild Arts” hires LA-based Fashion Designer & One-Time Project Runway Winner

Iconic arts school, Idyllwild Arts (www.idyllwildarts.org) announces the hiring of LA-based fashion designer Kentaro Kameyama as the Chair of Idyllwild Arts Academy’s Fashion Design Department. The position commences this fall and the winner of season 16’s Project Runway, Kentaro Kameyama, will be living between West Hollywood and Idyllwild so he can teach his classes in person. 

In his new role, Kentaro is determined to help foster the next generation of fashion talent. According to Abbie Bosworth, Chair of InterArts and Fashion at Idyllwild Arts, “Kentaro was chosen for the position of fashion chair because of his conviction that he can inspire young people in their journey to success in the fashion industry. When searching for a fashion chair she felt that they needed someone with an understanding of more avant-garde or conceptual fashion to balance the already practical and industry-savvy fashion faculty”.

Idyllwild Arts fashion alum include Quoi Alexander – who’s had experience with Chanel, Sonia Rykiel, and Alexander McQueen before he started his own label – as well as stylist turned designer, Paul Burgo, from Factory New York and Joshua Mann, currently the Senior Design Director at Michael Kors. 

Kentaro’s decision to teach at a high school — even one as renowned as Idyllwild Arts Academy — would not have been anticipated by other members of fashion’s ‘in’ crowd but Kentaro states: “I’m not interested in the idea that people have about a fashion designer’s cool lifestyle. I want to inspire young people, like my teachers inspired me. You know, I hold several degrees and certificates, so I’ve had the good luck to be inspired by many teachers!”

Kentaro recently showcased his new swimwear collection at Los Angeles Swim Week. He will soon appear on two upcoming, fashion-focused TV shows, House of Eleven Fashion Show on TLC and the other, which will air on Amazon, sees Kentaro working with the first transgender model agency in the U.S.

Marko Simonovic a fascinating breakout candidate for the Bulls

Will Marko Simonovic get a chance to crack the Bulls rotation this season?

Drafted 44th in the 2020 NBA draft from Montenegro, Marko Simonovic observed from the sidelines last season. He only appeared in nine games (all in garbage time), averaging 1.9 points per game and 1.1 rebounds per game. Moreover, he had to transition into the tempo of NBA action. It served as a good learning experience for the young power forward/center to build on coming into the 2022-2023 season.

Entering the summer league, Simonovic says he weighs in at 240, a 25 pound increase from his 215 pound frame a season ago. Bulking up will create more even matchups against NBA bigs. Additionally, helps a Bulls team that needs to improve their rim protection and rebounding. Andre Drummond was a good free agent add, but if Simonovic can play productively, the Bulls will have another weapon at their disposal. Additionally, their depth will be even deeper.

Montenegro may seem like a familiar location to some. Fellow teammate Nikola Vucevic has ties to Montenegro. Marko Simonovic has praised Vucevic for his mentorship and advice. Moreover, the two have trained together, fueling Marko’s growth.

Marko had a monster summer league debut against the Mavericks, scoring 27 points and adding 13 rebounds. He did struggle in the second game of the summer league against the Knicks, scoring one point and committing seven fouls. However, his play improved in today’s tilt with the Raptors as Simonovic had seven points along with three rebounds and three assists.

Marko Simonovic is still a project with a lot to learn. However, he has taken a huge step from last season and improving everyday is critical for Marko to see minutes this season. The Bulls could use another solid big. Keep on eye on Marko as a potential breakout player for Chicago.
