WNBA Power Rankings: Will Chicago or Las Vegas win Commissioner’s Cup final?on July 25, 2022 at 2:55 pm

The Commissioner’s Cup debuted last year with a championship matchup between the Seattle Storm and Connecticut Sun that, at the time, was thought to be a potential WNBA Finals meeting. It didn’t turn out that way as neither team advanced to the championship series.

This year’s version again feels very much like a Finals preview. The Chicago Sky and Las Vegas Aces are the top two teams in the league standings and ESPN’s WNBA Power Rankings, and have been among the hottest teams since the All-Star Game.

Chicago hosts Las Vegas on Tuesday (8:30 p.m. ET). The Commissioner’s Cup championship game is on Amazon Prime, which was part of the deal the WNBA reached with Amazon in 2021 as another revenue source for the league.

Both teams lost this past week, but those were the only losses the Sky and Aces have had since Team A’ja Wilson won the All-Star Game on July 10. Both are 5-1 in that stretch, but Chicago has done it without All-Star point guard Courtney Vandersloot, who has missed the past four games while in concussion protocol.

The Sky’s 83-80 loss at the New York Liberty on Saturday was their third game in four days, plus they had travel delays on the way to the Big Apple. Chicago coach James Wade brushed off questions about fatigue, saying it is just part of what all teams deal with. Despite the obstacles, the Sky still almost won that game.

Las Vegas has had defensive concerns in recent weeks, but coach Becky Hammon was happy with the way the Aces played in beating Los Angeles 84-66 on Saturday, calling it one of their better all-around efforts on both ends.

The Aces are now in for a travel test: Their next six games, starting with the Cup final, are on the road. They will go from Chicago to Indiana (two games) to Washington to Dallas to Seattle. Where will they be in the WNBA standings at the end of this stretch, headed into the final week of the regular season?

“Actually, we’ve been better on the road than at home, so hopefully that trend continues,” Hammon said of the Aces’ 10-3 mark away from Las Vegas compared to 10-5 there. “I have to do a good job of getting them the proper rest vs. keeping them sharp. We are literally making a whole circle around the United States. It hits every team at some point. But I think the road has been good for us with that foxhole mentality.”

The Sky and Aces have split their two regular-season meetings in 2022, each winning on the other’s home court. They will meet one more time, Aug. 11 in Las Vegas. Their matchup June 21 in Las Vegas was one of the stranger games of the season, with the Aces dominating the first quarter but then Chicago making the biggest comeback in league history (28 points) to win 104-95.

That loss sent Las Vegas in a bit of a tailspin — the Aces lost five of seven going into the All-Star Game — but it seems to be over now.

Chicago has had the league’s most superior depth (even without Vandersloot) this season. Las Vegas has been the WNBA’s best offensive team, leading the way in points per game (90.4) and offensive rating (108.3). The Sky are right behind in scoring average (85.6), and they have the edge in defensive rating: fifth at 98.0 to the Aces’ sixth at 101.3.

Individually, Las Vegas’ Kelsey Plum (20.1 PPG), Wilson (19.4) and Jackie Young (16.3) are all in the top 10 in the league in scoring. Seven Sky players are averaging between 14.8 and 9.0 points, led by Kahleah Copper. Chicago’s Candace Parker has two triple-doubles this season.

No slight toward the other teams, but this seems to be the perfect showcase for the Commissioner’s Cup championship, and a definite taste of the postseason.

Was it COVID Brain Fog or Writers Block?

It’s time to let the creative juices flow once more!

It’s been a while since I have done it.
Put words to the page and then I’ve spun it.
Sending to readers a timely missive.
Hoping my followers aren’t too dismissive.
I’m not sure of precise causation
That caused two weeks of blog cessation.
What was it kept my fingers napping
Instead of on the keyboard tapping.
It started when two lines appeared
On the COVID test I’d commandeered.
The first line meant the test was working.
The second confirmed the virus’s lurking.
Two Moderna shots then double boosted.
Yet still in my nose the microbe roosted.
With coughs and sneezes and feeling sickly.
Into quarnatine I disappeared quickly.
So empty moments were now my friend.
Hours of leisure I thought I’d spend.
Writing blogs ’bout things that were popping.
I might have been sick but the world was not stopping.
My mind was all foggy, could not concentrate at
The things going on that I’d want to debate at.
But now it’s much better and I’m seeing clearly
Here are some things I missed most severly.
There were hearings in DC that were causing a ruckus
They told how Trump and his friends were trying to f*ck us.
Thanks to Adam, Elaine and of course Ms Liz Cheney.
We were sure mesmerized learning about how insane he.
The planet is hotter, it’s like a fire pit glowing
Who knows just what to our kids we’re bestowing.
Heat waves, deadly storms, and still the President’s action
Was blocked by refrains from coal’s friend Hot Joe Manchin.
But up in the cosmos there was such delight
As the Webb telescope provided a sight.
Of the universe edges as they were at formation
I say it’s Big Bang, some say God’s creation.
Those topics I missed while my brain it was snoozing
So my silence for weeks I hope your excusing.
I’ll do what I can to get back up to snuff.
For reading this verse, I can’t thank you enough.

Reintroducing the NBA players we haven’t seen in a yearon July 25, 2022 at 12:50 pm

The 2021-22 NBA season felt more normal than the previous two seasons, but the sport was without some of its biggest stars.

LA Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard, New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson, Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray and Brooklyn Nets forward Ben Simmons all missed last season because of a variety of injuries, while new Clippers guard John Wall was healthy but sat out because he didn’t fit into the plans of the rebuilding Houston Rockets.

All five players should provide an immediate impact on their teams this upcoming season and in the case of the Clippers, the return of Leonard and the free agent addition of Wall should immediately make LA a contender again in the Western Conference following a 42-40 campaign.

What should fans expect from their favorite returning players this fall heading into training camp? How will teams work to reintroduce players who haven’t played in competitive games in more than a year — or two years in the case of Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac?

Our NBA experts recap when we last saw each player, what has changed since they have been away from the court and the roles they could play in the 2022-23 NBA season.

Steve Ballmer couldn’t contain his enthusiasm when asked what it will be like having Leonard back this season.

“Come on, man!” the Clippers owner said in late June. “[Leonard is] not only your best player but one of the preeminent, handful of top players in the world? I am really excited about that. Kawhi’s in the gym, he’s working and we got our fingers crossed everything keeps going on schedule.”

The Clippers surely will take every precaution surrounding their franchise player. Leonard hasn’t played since tearing his right ACL during the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Utah Jazz on June 14, 2021.

LA Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard has not played since June 14, 2021, when he tore his right ACL. Jevone Moore/Icon Sportswire

Leonard has been in San Diego rehabbing with his “maniacal” work ethic, as Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank described it.

“I’m glad [to] afford the light bill because he’s putting in the hours,” Frank said.

Entering July, Leonard had not yet participated in 5-on-5 basketball activities, but Frank said he is on schedule.

The Clippers can contend again in the West with a healthy Leonard and Paul George, who also missed a chunk of last season because of an elbow injury before returning in late March.

The Clippers added Wall after the point guard worked a buyout with the Rockets. So while the Clippers hope to bring back the majority of their team to make a title run, Wall will be a new piece with whom Leonard and George will have to form chemistry.

The Clippers might need time before hitting all cylinders again, but they’ll have time to do that before next postseason with what they hope will be a healthy and stronger Leonard.

— Ohm Youngmisuk

Wiseman hasn’t played a regular-season game since he tore his right meniscus on April 11, 2021. The Golden State Warriors center had surgery later that month, but the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 draft faced setback after setback in his attempts to return to the court.

Wiseman experienced swelling in his right knee last December, requiring him to undergo a cleanup procedure. By springtime, Wiseman appeared on track to return before the end of the regular season and in time to help the Warriors’ final push as they headed into the playoffs. He even played in three G League games, which were expected to be the final step in his rehab. But the knee swelling reoccurred, and he was eventually shut down for the rest of the season.

Was it COVID Brain Fog or Writers Block?
