Iowa trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th when Levi Jordan hit a two-run homer to close the gap to one. An error by Toledo on a Narciso Crook grounder scored Alfonso Rivas from 3rd to tie it the next inning. Zach Davis came in as a pinch runner for Crook and went 1st to 3rd on a single by Matt Mervis, then came home on another single by Darius Hill to put the Cubs in the lead. Brendon Little closed it out in the 9th to secure Iowa’s third consecutive come from behind victory.

Jeremiah Estrada received a well earned promotion to Iowa after beginning the season in High-A South Bend. The oft-injured former 6th rounder had thrown just 40 career innings prior to 2022.

Estrada’s fastball is explosive. Not only does he throw hard but hitters just don’t seem to pick it up well either. Even back when he was throwing low-90s he generated whiffs.Meteoric rise for former above slot 6th round prep pick, who was hampered by injuries his entire career.

Luis Devers just keeps on rolling. His changeup is a weapon and he simply does a great job of working quick, pounding the zone, and mixing in all of his pitches. His 2.58 ERA in 15 games with Myrtle Beach was good, but he’s been even better since his promotion (0.34 ERA in 6 games, 26.2 IP).

Oh, the many uses of Luis Devers’ changeup. He strikes out the side in the second to bring his total up to 5.

It is a time of ripening fields. In the stores and farmers’ markets, produce is fresh and plentiful. It’s like summer will never end.

And in these endless afternoons, do we still listen to baseball on the radio?

Do we think about mosquitos, and heat exhaustion, floods and thunder?

Do we think about the fall weather forecast, and back to school?

Already, the aisles of school supplies at Walgreens. And ice cream on sale.

And what about ChicagoNow, this site of so many wonderful blogs, such talent and variety, this community of writers? As of now, things remain uncertain. Maybe this will all go away tomorrow….
