Mapping sex work in Chicago

Rebelle Cunt, a writer, activist, and self-proclaimed Chicago “heaux-storian,” is the founder and director of Heaux History, a multimedia archive that explores the history of Black, Brown, and Indigenous sex workers and erotic labor.

When Cunt began to search for research on sex worker history in Chicago, she struggled to find any literature written through the lens of BIPOC sex workers. She knew this wasn’t the truth of the past—like sex work everywhere, sex work in Chicago was built on the backs of Black and Brown sex workers who fought for fair wages, recognition, and safety. Cunt decided that to honor those before her, and to guide those after, she would create Heaux History. While Heaux History is rooted in Chicago, it’s also a project with a larger focus: documenting and archiving the history of sex workers across the country to ensure their place in history.

“I started doing more research around sex work history and I realized that I was looking for my [Black and Brown] elders and ancestors, Black and Brown sex workers, because I feel like by this point, a lot of work you can find on sex work is so white-centered,” Cunt said. “But I know we were there.”

At the end of the 19th century, the Levee District in Chicago became the birthplace of sex work in the city. The district encompassed four blocks of the South Loop from 18th to 22nd Streets and hosted a strip of saloons, dance halls, and brothels. Drugs, sex, and alcohol were readily available to visitors.

The Everleigh Club, the most well-known brothel from the Levee District, was run by Ada and Minna Everleigh. The club was located on Dearborn Avenue and operated from 1900 to 1911. Ada and Minna were both white, and while their history is vital to understanding the policing of sex work and brothels in the early 20th century, centering their stories clouds the histories of sex workers of color.

Cunt knew she had to do something to change the narrative.

After creating Heaux History, she continued the work with the Red MapsProject, which consists of interactive maps detailing the history of erotic labor in both Chicago and San Francisco. The Red MapsProject is a collaboration between Heaux History and the sex worker organization Under the Red Umbrella, hosted as part of a series of projects supported by the media organization and network Old Pros, which itself seeks to destigmatize sex work and change “the status of sex workers in society.”

Chicago’s Red Map features nearly 100 locations of relevance to past and present-day sex work communities. Among them are historic destinations such as the Black Belt, Bedbug Row, and the State Street Stroll; current spaces such as the Viagra Triangle (a hub since the 80s for middle-aged and older mostly white men who wish to pay for sex work); popular stroll areas; and organizations and businesses that are supportive of sex workers, including the Leather Archives, and Brave Space Alliance.

While Cunt works from Chicago, Heaux History is a national network. In order to conduct the research for the Red Maps project, Cunt called in Heaux History’s editor and director of accessibility and inclusion, Peech, to lead.

Peech traveled from Kansas to Chicago to work on the project and visit historical sex worker sites as well as current ones and further create community between sex workers and their supporters. They then worked to create the Google maps that take visitors of the Red Maps website on a historic tour.

Peech, a graduate student in comic studies, said that in their research, Black and Brown sex workers were nowhere to be found, a similar situation that Cunt had faced. Creating Red Maps and being a part of Heaux History helps them change the future by restoring the past.

“It is important to me to do this because we have been erased, decimated,” Peech said. “We have this idea that Black and Brown sex workers never existed and, if they did, they’ve never done anything positive, helpful, or notable. But they are the ones who built the foundation our cities now rest on, and being able to uncover that and make it very clear, very plain, and loud enough for everyone to see that we have always been here no matter what, it makes sure that those people who came before me don’t disappear either. We find their names, their faces, what they did, and we share it because they matter too.”

Chicago sex worker history is rife with many of the issues that we still see through redlining and housing discrimination. The district within the historic Black Belt area from roughly 22nd to 31st along State Street was associated with Black sex workers in the late 19th century and continues today to have a large Black population.

This isn’t by coincidence, as Cunt pointed out. Chicago was designed around the “red-light district” of brothels and saloons and who could afford to live near them—and away from them.

“It’s all racialized,” Cunt said. “For instance, the further south and west you go, the further deep into Black communities, you see more loitering laws that they are bringing back that are aimed at prostitutes and prostitution. This trickles down. Justice lives in certain neighborhoods and particular areas but I want people to see that there is literal terrain, there is a line in the sand.”

While a lot has changed in Chicago since the late 19th century, acceptance and respect for sex workers in the city has arguably not increased. There are multiple memorial sites listed in Red Maps to honor the over 75 women, many of whom were sex workers, who have been found murdered in the last 20 years. The majority of the cases are still open.

And Red Maps is also for them, to remember the missing and murdered sex workers Chicago hasn’t taken the time to get to know and continues to erase.

Peech says this erasure in the past and present is purposeful. While Peech is a feminist themselves, some feminist circles don’t consider sex work a feminist issue due to stigma.

“Everything begins and ends with the stigma that is around us, its puritanical nonsense about sex. But when I hear people and talk with people about it with this kind of passion that shows the fullness of the situation, that’s a really beautiful thing. We can only hope we continue to normalize erotic labor and talk about it.”

‘Being free’ could help Bears S Eddie Jackson reassert himself as dangerous defender

When the new staff took over the Bears and scrutinized a roster that went 6-11 and got everyone fired, it was fairly easy to sort out which players had potential to be contributors on the next good team and which ones needed to go.

But safety Eddie Jackson was one of the few who didn’t obviously fit either category.

His future, with the Bears and as an NFL star, is up in the air. What he does this season, at 28, will determine his course in both regards.

And in a new defensive scheme under Matt Eberflus and coordinator Alan Williams, Jackson feels like that’s fully in his hands. The biggest difference is “being free” and empowered to be aggressive in the secondary.

The Bears freed up Jackson for that role in part by drafting thumping Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker in the second round. While at first it seemed they must have picked him with an eye on replacing Jackson, perhaps they were being honest when they predicted the duo would be a perfect fit.

“When I say ‘free’ I mean in more of a free safety role, being a guy that’s roaming in the post,” Jackson said. “I was down in the box a lot last year, and trust me, I love it, butI just love getting the ball, getting interceptions, scoring touchdowns. Those types of things.”

Those types of things would be very welcome.

The Bears led the NFL with a stunning 36 takeaways in 2018, including seven from Jackson. They plunged to 19 in 2019 (22nd in the league), 18 in 2020 (25th) and 16 last season (26th).

That’s a troubling trend for Eberflus, whose Colts were second in the league over the last four seasons with 107 takeaways. Jackson, more so than anyone else on the roster except possibly defensive end Robert Quinn, has a track record that suggests he’ll be an asset in that facet.

And to Jackson’s credit, he wants to. He reported to every voluntary practice in the offseason and eagerly bought into the new system as he looked to bury the last two frustrating seasons and re-launch himself as one of the NFL’s most dangerous defenders.

“Some people have a special talent to get to the football, and we definitely don’t want to suppress that,” safeties coach Andre Curtis said. “So within our defensive structure, [we] just allow him some freedoms to do his job and when he sees something to go make plays.

“Really good guys can see the opportunities present themselves within the flow of a game and then they go make plays. We definitely don’t want to coach the instincts and the playmaking stuff out of Eddie.”

Instead the Bears hope to maximize it.

Brisker is already helping with that, and he and Jackson have bonded on and off the field.

“I’m excited just to see what he’s capable of doing and just to see the type of dog he has in him,” Jackson said. “He’s a feisty guy. He wants to hit every play. To have a guy like that is exciting.”

And helpful.

With so much in his favor, it’s time for Jackson to reassert himself as an essential part of the Bears’ defense.

Jackson is the Bears’ second-most expensive player with a $15.1 salary-cap hit, and that’s a bargain if they rediscover the takeaway machine he was in his first three seasons. He had 10 interceptions, four forced fumbles and five touchdowns from 2017 through ’19 and was an all-pro in ’18.

General manager Ryan Poles would be happy to keep paying for that.

If it’s more of the same from the last two seasons, however, when Jackson played 1,846 snaps without a pick and had issues with tackling, it’ll be an easy call for Poles to bail on the remaining two years and $35.2 million on his contract.

But really, that decision is Jackson’s.

Jury awards V. Bryant $16M over crash photoson August 25, 2022 at 12:43 am

LOS ANGELES — A federal jury found Wednesday that Los Angeles County must pay Kobe Bryant’s widow $16 million over photos of the NBA star’s body at the site of the 2020 helicopter crash site that killed him.

The nine jurors who returned the unanimous verdict agreed with Vanessa Bryant and her attorneys that deputies and firefighters taking and sharing photos of the remains of Kobe Bryant and their 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, invaded her privacy and brought her emotional distress.

The jury deliberated for 4 1/2 hours before reaching the verdict. Vanessa Bryant cried quietly as it was read.

The pictures were shared mostly among employees of the L.A. County sheriff’s and fire departments, including by some who were playing video games and attending an awards banquet. They were also seen by some of their spouses and in one case by a bartender at a bar where a deputy was drinking.

Vanessa Bryant tearfully testified during the 11-day trial that news of the photos compounded her still-raw grief a month after losing her husband and daughter, and that she still has panic attacks at the thought that they might still be out there.

“I live in fear every day of being on social media and these popping up,” she testified. “I live in fear of my daughters being on social media and these popping up.”

Her co-plaintiff, Chris Chester, whose wife and daughter were also among the nine people killed in the crash, was awarded $15 million.

Vanessa Bryant’s attorneys did not give jurors a dollar amount they thought their client deserved, but Chester’s attorney gave them suggested guidelines that would have meant tens of millions for each plaintiff.

Vanessa Bryant’s lawyer Luis Li told jurors that the close-up photos had no official or investigative purpose, and were mere “visual gossip” shared out of a gruesome curiosity.

County attorney J. Mira Hashmall argued during the trial that the photos were a necessary tool for assessing the situation.

She acknowledged that they should not have been shared with everyone who saw them. But she emphasized that the photos had never appeared publicly and had never even been seen by the plaintiffs. She said that meant that Sheriff Alex Villanueva and other officials had taken decisive and effective action when they ordered those who had the photos to delete them.

Kobe Bryant, the former Lakers star, five-time NBA champion and member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, was traveling with Gianna and seven others to a youth basketball game when the helicopter they were aboard crashed into hills in Calabasas west of Los Angeles on Jan. 26, 2020.

Federal safety officials blamed pilot error for the crash.

The prerequisite is that sugar daddies have to be wealthy and successful. They give priority to verified “elite members” who join with the sole intention of spoiling their sugar babies with money and attention.

Men simply cannot reach out to any women unless they’ve initiated contact and interest.

It is catered towards and attracts more women than men looking to mingle or find networking opportunities, friends, or hookups! Even though it has a relatively positive and clean rep, it’s a great site for educated, good-looking men who are searching for successful, bold women.

New Restaurant, Liva, Set to Open in Chicago Winery River North this FallXiao Faria daCunhaon August 24, 2022 at 1:52 am

Have you checked out the new Chicago Winery River North location? If not, here is another reason to pay them a visit: a brilliant new restaurant, Liva, is coming to Chicago Winery this fall! Deriving its name from the Scandinavian word “liv” meaning “life” and evoking a sense of the passage of time and the joy of the journey, Liva will be a chef-driven, community-inspired restaurant for locals and visitors alike.

Powered by First Batch Hospitality, the mastermind behind our beloved Chicago Winery itself, Liva is set to open this October at Chicago Winery in the city’s River North neighborhood, presenting working winery concepts set against metropolitan backdrops with restaurants, private event spaces and tasting rooms.

“Like a great dinner party, the best gatherings start in the kitchen,” said Executive Chef, Andrew Graves. “I am excited to share dishes that not only represent my journey as a chef, but also inspire great conversations around the table. Whether for two or 20, our menu is meant to be shared and paired – with wonderful wines.” Chef Graves’ recent kitchen credentials include time at the world-renowned restaurant Alinea, where he trained under Grant Achatz.

Whether joining the restaurant for a date night, a business meeting with colleagues or a celebration with family and friends, Liva’s communal setting, creative menus and beverage and wine selections set the tone as the perfect gathering place, all set against the backdrop of a working winery.

Carefully curated by Chef Graves, the modern-American menu will focus on market-driven ingredients sourced close to home. Highlights include charcuterie and cheese board selections with housemade accoutrement. Allow Chef Graves to be the expert when ordering a “Chef’s Whim”, which will showcase a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables offering guests a fun way to share and graze between friends.

The menu will also feature stunning large format shareable entrées – think Whole Branzino, impressive butcher cuts and more; a myriad of proteins like venison and grilled shrimp; as well as unique takes on seasonal vegetables like roasted squash and radishes. Chef Graves will also make all pastas from scratch, including three unique options on his opening menu.

In addition to the craveable savory menu, Liva is pleased to offer an exciting range of cocktails. Sourcing inspiration from around the world and using seasonal ingredients, cocktails will be available to enjoy in the dining room or at the striking u-shaped bar that seats up to 25 guests. On trend and with an ear to the ground, Liva will also offer a nitro brewed espresso martini on tap.

“Liva’s bar program aspires to bring a creative take on cocktails by incorporating seasonal ingredients and at times, we will draw inspiration from the winery team to create wine centric offerings,” says Bar Manager, Roger Landes. Landes is a beverage specialist with years of experience in the Chicago bar scene, Landes’ work history includes the extensive opening cocktail program at The Loyalist in Chicago’s West Loop, and Rick Bayless’ Bar Sotano.

To complement food and drink offerings, Liva will feature a genuine, warm and inviting atmosphere. Whimsical wallpaper coverings have been added to the restaurant space to suggest distinct vignettes, including the bar, main dining room and tasting bar. Throughout the space, which seats a total of 175 people, guests will find rich, warm jewel tones with pops of color.

Guests dining at Liva will also notice the use of arches in the design that nod to historic Chicago architecture and provide a striking view of the working winery from the main dining room. A fireplace will keep conversations romantic and cozy. The restaurant will also feature a four-season outdoor patio on the main floor, available for dining outdoors year-round.

The team aims to demystify the sometimes ostentatious world of wine, beverage and food. The goal is to provide a feeling much like a visit to a friend’s home. With an eye on genuine hospitality, the team will engage guests on in-house selections and pairing recommendations. The service will be both warm and approachable.

Liva will open for dinner in late-October, Sunday – Wednesday from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m.; Thursday 5:00 – 11:00 p.m.; Friday & Saturday 5:00 p.m. to midnight – a late night menu will also be offered on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 p.m. to midnight.

Founded by Brian Leventhal and John Stires, First Batch Hospitality champions a new, accessible approach to wine and winemaking. The hospitality group presents working wineries set against metropolitan backdrops, complete with private event spaces, restaurants and tasting rooms. With locations in Brooklyn, New York, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, Illinois, First Batch Hospitality is proud to tailor its concepts to represent the local creativity and exemplary hospitality of the neighborhoods they call home.

Funeral Potatoes get light in the loafers at the Next Monday Night Foodball

Oranges were the only fruit aboard the Revenge. Even ifCaptain Stede Bonnet couldn’t taste them in the 40-orange cake he ordered—and even if the crew got scurvy—at least he caught Blackbeard’s eye.

And with that the HBO comedy Our Flag Means Death cleansed the Florida orange of its residual 70s-era anti-LGBTQ+ rot, and repositioned it as an enduring symbol of gay pirate love.

“That show has a representation of queerness that is so joyful,” says Eve Studnicka, one half of the great midwestern meal delivery duo Funeral Potatoes. “I’ve never seen that before.”

You’ll certainly taste the citrus in her homage to Stede’s cake when she and Alexis Thomas return to the Kedzie Inn for Monday Night Foodball, the Reader’s ongoing chef pop-up series.

Did you know? The Reader is nonprofit. The Reader is member supported. You can help keep the Reader free for everyone—and get exclusive rewards—when you become a member. The Reader Revolution membership program is a sustainable way for you to support local, independent media.

This Monday, August 29, Studnicka and Thomas are sneaking away from their temporary run at the Salt Shed to present a menu inspired by queer TV and film, such as Fried Green Tomatoes, which begets the Towanda: pulled pork with honey-molasses barbecue sauce, fried green tomatoes (natch), and cornbread drizzled in hot honey (like when Idgie braves the bees for Ruth’s honeycomb).

Thomas, who grew up in the home of the Rockford Peaches, gives a nod to A League of Their Own with a beer-battered corn dog with peach mustard; and also The Birdcage, with a mess of Cubano-frites, with crispy ham and pickles, all drenched in Swiss cheese fondue. And then there’s that cake, a spiced orange sponge blanketed in brown butter rum frosting and candied ginger. I know your first impulse will be to smoosh it into Anita Bryant’s face, but I’m confident she won’t be there. So eat.

This Funeral Potatoes threepeat couldn’t be more timely, going down just after the one-year anniversary of the first Foodball last summer. You can still catch them at the Salt Shed tomorrow at the Jorja Smith show or at the Jason Isbell/Shemekia Copeland show on September 22 (the show on the 23rd is sold out, as is Death Cab for Cutie on September 24), after which they’ll return to regularly scheduled meal delivery.

But as you’d expect from Studnicka and Thomas, this is a menu just as personal as it is universal. As always there will be limited walk-in availability, but preorders for the Light Loafers Supper Club at the Kedzie Inn are on sale now.

Monday Night Foodball resumes after a Labor Day break on September 12 with the return of The Melanin Martha; and on the 19th, a night of global Asian barbecue with Umamicue and friends. After that it’s a brand-new fall schedule.
