The number 1 key to Chicago Bears beating San Francisco 49ers might surprise youRyan Heckmanon September 8, 2022 at 11:00 am

When the Chicago Bears open their season on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, all eyes will be on quarterbacks Justin Fields and Trey Lance.

Many people will be watching to see if the Bears can muster enough points with the below-average supporting cast surrounding Fields. Meanwhile, the 49ers boast one of the best defenses in football and are coming off an NFC Championship appearance last year.

The big difference between that team and this year’s 49ers team, though, is under center of course. Handing the reigns to Lance could mean a totally different feel for the 49ers, and could come with some growing pains.

In the small sample size we’ve seen from Lance, one of his tendencies is to hold the ball for too long. Last season, his time to throw was roughly 3.5 seconds. Now, to be fair, this is also one of Justin Fields’ top criticisms from a year ago, so this very first game of the season should be telling.

However, for the sake of argument, Lance also has far less starting experience than Fields. This is still going to be considered more of a rookie year for Lance than it will be for Fields. With only two starts under his belt, Lance is making his third career start as a pro on Sunday.

With that said, it doesn’t take a lot of digging around to find what 49ers fans and media are most concerned about going into this season: the interior offensive line. Just do a simple search and you’ll find that this is the major worry amongst 49ers faithful.

The Chicago Bears’ number one key to beating the San Francisco 49ers lies within their defensive front.

San Francisco has two incredible tackles in Mike McGlinchey and Trent Williams. Anyone who knows football understands that these two are rock solid, with Williams being the best tackle in the game. So, Robert Quinn, Al-Quadin Muhammad and Trevis Gipson will be in for a tall task in rushing the passer against those two.

But, taking a look at the inside, that’s where the Bears can take advantage.

The 49ers will have one of two veterans at center in either Jake Brendel or Daniel Brunskill. Brendel has only three career starts, while Brunskill finished last year giving up five sacks with a PFF grade of 61.4.

At guard, the 49ers will be starting second-year pro Aaron Banks and a rookie fourth-round pick in Spencer Burford. Neither one of them are solidified pros, and Banks played just five snaps a year ago.

On the flip side, the Bears’ interior defensive line should be a strength of this team.

For example, new starting defensive lineman Justin Jones finished last season with 10 quarterback pressures in 11 games. Angelo Blackson ended the year with 14 quarterback pressures with just eight starts in 2021.

Newly-signed defensive tackle Armon Watts enjoyed a huge 2021 season, and finished with 21 quarterback pressures and 5.0 sacks with just nine starts in Minnesota.

By contrast, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vita Vea had 15 quarterback pressures, starting in 16 games last season, just to put things in perspective.

Last season, even though the Bears weren’t a very competitive team, they finished fourth in sacks with 49 — and that includes just 6.0 from the injured Khalil Mack.

Under Matt Eberflus, the Bears want to establish a clear defensive identity that includes taking the football away and getting after the quarterback. In order to beat San Francisco, they’ll have to use their advantage on the interior in getting after Lance and also keeping the run game at bay.

We could talk all day about Kyle Shanahan’s ability to establish the run, no matter who’s taking the hand-offs. But, if the Bears are going to win on Sunday, it’s going to come down to the interior big men. That battle will decide the game. If Chicago can win on the interior and force Lance to be uncomfortable all afternoon, then they very well could come out with a surprising win.

Cubs’ faced with ‘difficult’ roster, pitching decisions in final month

Too much young pitching talent is a good problem to have for the rebuilding Cubs.

“In a perfect world, all of your talent would be homegrown,” vice president of pitching Craig Breslow said last month. “But what we see is, we’re getting a clearer picture of the guys that we have in our system who are going to contribute to major-league wins. And then alongside that, you have the chance to complement and fill in spaces, which is a much easier task than trying to create a roster externally.”

But having so many notable pitching prospects at the upper levels of the farm system – going hand-in-hand with the wealth of players the Cubs have to put on the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft – will make for some tough roster decisions down the stretch.

Most of the young pitchers they’ve called up recently have impressed.

Right-hander Javier Assad made his third career start, and fourth appearance, on Wednesday in the Cubs’ 7-1 loss to the Reds. He’d earned his promotion to the big-leagues when the Cubs needed an extra arm for their doubleheader against the Cardinals two weeks ago. He allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Reds on Wednesday, and he’d been so dominant in his previous starts that his ERA only rose to 2.93.

Reliever Jeremiah Estrada was one of the Cubs’ substitute players in Toronto. He earned a spot on the roster immediately after the series, as rosters expanded for September.

Swingman Hayden Wesneski achieved a first in MLB’s modern era, throwing five scoreless innings in relief while allowing just two hits and recording eight strikeouts in his debut Tuesday.

So, when do the Cubs bring Adbert Alzolay back? And how will they adjust when Keegan Thompson and/or Justin Steele return from the 15-day injured list?

Alzolay (right shoulder strain) threw three innings of one-run ball in his latest rehab outing, with Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. The Cubs are expected to bring him back as a multi-inning reliever before the season ends, but the timing is up in the air.

They also have pitchers like Wesneski on the roster filling that role. And when a pitcher throws multiple innings, he needs extra rest. Having too many relievers unavailable on any given day complicates bullpen management. Alzolay is also on the 60-day IL, so the Cubs will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for him.

Thompson (low back tightness) threw live batting practice on Tuesday, according to the team, marking a step in his rehab process.

If all goes smoothly, he could be back as soon as the Cubs’ next homestand. But the club also won’t rush him back, cognizant of the fatigue expected from an increase in workload this season.

Steele (low back strain) is in a similar boat, although his timeline to return is up in the air.

“It’s not my arm or anything, it’s not something that’s super serious,” Steele told the Sun-Times, adding that his arm is stronger than it’s been at any other point in the season. “I definitely want to come back and pitch in some games. But I think the main thing is making sure I’m 100% healthy, pitching without even thinking about my back.”

The Cubs could get creative – piggybacking starts, etc. – to limit Thompson and Steele’s innings if and when they return in the final month of the season. But, again, the 14-pitcher roster limit in September doesn’t leave much flexibility.

Those considerations don’t even take into account the maneuvering the Cubs are expected to do to protect eligible players from the Rule 5 Draft.

“When you have no real [difficult] 40-man roster decisions, that’s a problem,” president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said. “And we have a lot of really difficult ones now, guys that I think are deserving.”

Newest NBA 2K23 Ratings For Chicago’s All-Stars

The NBA 2K23 ratings for the top players on the Chicago Bulls have been released

NBA 2K is one of the highest anticipated video games each year as the franchise sells millions of copies year in and year out globally. The video game has redefined the sports entertainment industry while making a major impact in the world of hoops culture. Every year days before its initial release date the franchise reveals the player’s ratings for some of the leagues top players, and for both of Chicago’s All-Stars that was the case.

DeMar DeRozan’s NBA 2K23 Rating

It was revealed that DeMar DeRozan rating was listed at a 89 overall.

@2KNederland @NBA2K @DeMar_DeRozan That’s actually so disrespectful after the season he had😂😂😂

As always with almost every player’s rating there’s going to be some type of controversy around it. With DeMar’s case his may actually be valid. Last year for NBA 2K22, DeRozan finished the year with a rating of a 90 overall. Statistical DeMar had one of his best campaign of his 13 year career last season averaging 27.9 points a career high, his most since 2016 while also setting a career high in 3 point percentage with .352%. With setting new career marks such as these it would make sense that at the minimum he should heading into the new season initially where he left off at a 90.

Zach LaVine’s NBA 2K23 Rating

For the two time All-Star, Zach LaVine received his highest player rating since being involved in the 2K franchise with an 88 overall.

We got the First Look at @ZachLaVine 👀
Agree with his rating? #2KRatings https://t.co/ZgG2vA9O7k

Since these is Zach’s highest rating he’s received there isn’t much you can really nitpick about. One of the only issues that can be argued is why hasn’t he received a rating like this in previous years. Comparing his 2021-2022 season to 2020-2021, LaVine saw a decrease in every statistical output but somehow his overall rating for NBA 2K22 was a 87.

Even though the Bulls experienced more success in the 2021 season, LaVine did not establish the same numbers during his breakout 2020-2021 campaign that earned him his first All-Star appearance. With that being said LaVine’s newest rating should not be discouraged, whereas it should regarded that he is earning the respect and establishing himself as one the leagues top guards.

It was also revealed the LaVine was listed as a player with a top 5 dunk rating with a 95 in NBA 2K23.

The Top Dunkers in the 2K23 💪
Agree? #2KRatings https://t.co/caIwlci2qW

This should come as no surprise as LaVine has always been regarded has one of the top high flyers ever since he stepped foot into the league. Winning back to back Slam Dunk contest in 2015 and 2016, LaVine still has the bounce defines him as a top dunker in the NBA.

Close to the end of ’Vol. 51’

We’re close to the end of “Volume 51” in a few issues. Yes, that means that we have survived nearly 51 years of publication, a feat that perhaps no one imagined might happen when we first started in 1971.

For someone like me, a native Chicagoan who is themselves headed to just shy of 50 (all right, 48) this month, it’s so improbable that something like the Reader still exists. It’s a forum for intelligent writing, covering the important stuff like government shenanigans, battles between police and citizenry, new worlds of music, cinema, and theater, all wrapped up in a totally free to read package. Très 70s of us, no? Our coverage is not just about Chicago—it’s an attempt to show you the soul of what Chicago really is.

Did you know? The Reader is nonprofit. The Reader is member supported. You can help keep the Reader free for everyone—and get exclusive rewards—when you become a member. The Reader Revolution membership program is a sustainable way for you to support local, independent media.

We often find that the issues we write about (like income woes, wrongful convictions, a lack of equity within our neighborhoods, health care) are issues that someone writing for the Reader in the past also tackled. But we are hopeful for new solutions to these old problems. The guaranteed income program described by writer Sky Patterson (in a series of stories originally created for City Bureau) is one such possibility. And sometimes we echo ourselves a bit in these pages: Kelly Garcia’s coverage of a mayoral candidate with a not-so-savory record could time travel into countless past municipal election cycles. (Unfortunately, people who want to assert unnecessary amounts of power in their public and personal lives are still attracted to our City Hall—go figure.)

When contributor Isa Giallorenzo pitched a story on Hyun’s Hapkido School in Bucktown, I was plagued with a vague memory of “I know these people . . . why do I know these people?” It turns out that my Uncle Rob trained with Grandmaster Hyun in the 80s, alongside his friend Michael Kiefer, who wrote about Hyun and his school for the Reader in 1982. I remember as a kid hearing from Uncle Rob, “I’ve got this friend Kiefer, he’s a writer, he even wrote for the Chicago Reader!” As we all get older, it’s nice to see that some of these legacies still thrive.

Cubs’ 15 MLB debuts this year match last year’s total

When Hayden Wesneski made his major-league debut, he was the 15th Cub to do so this year. That tied last season’s total.

“A lot of after-game events,” veteran catcher Yan Gomes said Tuesday. “I feel like we’re doing that every other day, some new thing is happening.”

In the rush of MLB debuts, as the Cubs continue to rebuild and evaluate which players fit into their plan for the future, there’s been a handful of memorable ones.

Back in May, Christopher Morel blasted a pinch-hit home run in his debut. The same day, Brandon Hughes threw a hitless 1 2/3 innings. Late last month, Javier Assad threw four scoreless innings. Just last week, Jeremiah Estrada’s fastball sat at 98 mph in a shutout inning.

“It says a lot about the organization,” veteran lefty Wade Miley said. “It says how they’re bringing guys up through the system and prepared them for these moments.”

Even with that backdrop, Wesneski’s five-inning debut stood out, as he struck out eight and limited the Reds to two hits.

“I don’t know if it gets a whole lot better than that,” Miley said.

Gomes highlighted Wesneski’s composure during his outing, a theme among the rookies who have made an impact in their debuts.

Wesneski said when things “were going a little sideways,” he re-centered himself by staring at the top of the left-field flag pole and taking deep breaths.

That’s not an easy thing to do in an unfamiliar ballpark, with new teammates, soaking in a raucous atmosphere.

“Oh, they were loud,” Wesneski said of the crowd for the last out of the Cubs’ 9-3 win. “I didn’t think Chicago on a Tuesday would get this loud. I can’t even imagine with the playoffs and stuff like that. … And it fired me up on a Tuesday.”

Wesneski did have some familiar faces to turn to in the dugout. Wesneski had worked closely with assistant pitching coach Daniel Moskos when they were both in the Yankees organization. And he and infielder David Bote got to know each other when they overlapped in Triple-A Iowa last month.

“It’s just fun to be a part of it,” Bote said. “It’s a special moment. And obviously he was lights out, and that makes it even more fun.”

The Cubs are closing in on the major-league record for players used in a season, which they set last year with 69. With about a month to go in this season, the Cubs have used 61 players.

Injury updates

Catcher Willson Contreras was scheduled for an MRI on his left ankle on Wednesday. The Cubs put him on the 10-day IL on Tuesday, retroactive to Saturday. He’s been battling ankle soreness off and on since rolling his left ankle four weeks ago.

“Making sure everything’s on the up and up in there,” manager David Ross said, “and go from there.”

Corner infielder Patrick Wisdom (sprained left ring finger) has been hitting in the batting cages. He is eligible to return from the 10-day IL whenever the Cubs clear him to do so.

Jose Abreu’s RBIs — and hustle — make a difference for White Sox

SEATTLE — Jose Abreu hasn’t homered in 33 games. But as long as he keeps hitting — and hustling — as he did in the White Sox’ 9-6 victory over the Mariners Wednesday, that’s OK with acting manager Miguel Cairo.

“If I were playing right now, I’d want to be like him,” Cairo said. “I would follow him. I would be imitating the way he works, the way he prepares himself, the way he plays the game.”

Extending his 18th career hitting streak of 10-plus games to 11, the second most in the majors since the start of 2014 behind the Rockies’ Charlie Blackmon (19), Abreu drove in two runs with a single and sacrifice fly and has hit safely in 21 of his last 24 games with 34 hits and a .373 average during that stretch.

The Sox have taken heat for not running everything out this season, but Abreu ran all out to avoid an inning-ending double play — a challenge overturned an out call at first base — before Eloy Jimenez homered in the fourth inning to cut the Mariners lead to 4-2.

“I appreciate when my teammates hustle,” Jimenez said. “It was good to see that and gave me the opportunity to hit in that inning.”

Abreu, 35, has 14 homers, and his homerless streak is the longest of his career. His career low for a full season is 22 in 2018, when he was limited to 128 games.

“I’m going to tell you this, he’s been the most consistent hitter on our team and I’m glad that he’s getting hits, just getting on base,” Cairo said. “Sometimes the line drives are not going to go out of the ballpark. He’s the most consistent hitter we have this year.”

Abreu (.309/.382/.452) leads the American League with 160 hits, including 32 doubles.

La Russa and Oakland

As the Sox head to Oakland for a four-game series, a team spokesman said manager Tony La Russa is still going through testing as prescribed by his personal doctors. La Russa, who managed the A’s from 1986-95, would like to attend former A’s ace Dave Stewart’s jersey retirement Sunday but he needs clearance from his doctors to travel from Phoenix. The A’s set up the Stewart event for when La Russa and the Sox are in town.

La Russa’s absence remains indefinite pending results of his medical evaluations.

In La Russa’s absence, with Cairo taking over as acting manager, veteran players have “really taken the charge as far as what we need to accomplish as a team, as far as being supportive to our staff,” pitcher Michael Kopech said. “And with that support everybody is feeling a lot more confident in themselves and each other and I think it’s going to be a fun final push here for us.”

Robert out, again

Luis Robert, who left Tuesday’s game after two at-bats (both strikeouts) because of a bruised left hand from getting hit by a pitch, is day-to-day.

“We’re going to see how he feels [Thursday],” Cairo said.

Robert hadn’t played in two weeks because of a sore left wrist and getting hit on the left hand doubled his discomfort. He’s hurting “where he got hit [on his fingers] and I guess the [left] wrist, it’s still a little sore,” Cairo said.

AJ Pollock started in center field, flanked by Andrew Vaughn in left and Gavin Sheets in right.

“I was on another site. Met a guy who told me about Adult FriendFinder (AFF). I signed up. Have been on AFF for a little over a year and a half. Have nothing but praise. When AFF works, it WORKS! For the most part, I have met some truly wonderful men. Local men, business men coming through my area, couples. “A lotta hookup sites out there, which means a lot of scams. Gotta be honest, at first I was skeptical of BuddyBang. Seemed like another fake site that just wanted your cash. But I was pleasantly surprised. More than that, I was very happy with my experience. I met a couple real girls here who, let’s just say, were down to get down. And that’s all I wanted. I wasn’t a creep. I kept it cool, wasn’t aggressive with messaging and it all worked. I recommend it!”

4.  Ashley Madison – Best for affairs

SpecificationRatingUser experience★★★★★Real profiles★★★★★Success rate★★★★★Customer service★★★★★

Pros

Free for women to useVery discreetJudgment-free because nearly everyone is married and looking

Cons

Not the most moral hookup optionExpensive for men to use

Ashley Madison has the reputation of being a site for affairs and discreet married dating. Its slogan is literally “Life is short. Have an affair.” The brand has become notoriously known over the years for being a site for married people to flirt and hook up.

The site caters to students in relationships, lonely wives, married men, and everyday people who want to find a safe space to maintain an affair and not be judged. This hookup site is excellent for those who are attached and seeking excitement from a monotone lifestyle and exploring the world of extramarital affairs.

Ashley Madison is the first married dating website and is committed to discretion. Despite the backlash and reputation, this site continues to be popular and has an immense database that crosses every major city in the world.

What Users Think About Ashley Madison

“As a woman, I can tell you that this site works. I’ve met and hooked up with a lot of great guys. However, I will say that since there are considerably more men than women on the site you have to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Women like to be wined and dined and brought on business trips, to a nice hotel, etc… Be patient, it works. I found a great guy who I have been hooking up with on a regular basis for over 2 years now and we are very happy with the arrangement.”

5.  Seeking – Best for sugar relationships

SpecificationRatingUser experience★★★★★Real profiles★★★★★Success rate★★★★Customer service★★★★

Pros

Free for women to useVery discreetJudgment-free because nearly everyone is married and looking

Cons

Not the most moral hookup optionExpensive for men to use

Seeking has undergone a brand transformation, but it still attracts a straightforward target audience: rich and experienced individuals seeking the young and gorgeous. This sugar daddy site is about helping daddies and mommas find sugar babies or cubs for hookups.

It has a much higher user base of women because the “sugar baby” theme brings many young women to the site. The site claims to have four times the number of women than men in their database. The prerequisite is that sugar daddies have to be wealthy and successful. They give priority to verified “elite members” who join with the sole intention of spoiling their sugar babies with money and attention.

Seeking is a great site for beautiful young women looking for fun, attention, and a “daddy” to spoil them! This site is not the best to find a lasting love story—it’s geared toward hookups and has a more transaction-like nature.

Women who’d like to meet a well-off older man (or would be babies), you’re in luck – you do not have to pay to use Seeking.

Membership LengthPriceOne month$89.95/monthThree month$79.95/month ($239.85 total)Diamond (more premium features)$249.95/month

What Users Think About Seeking

“Came across them on Facebook and decided to spend a few bucks to find some men. Although not all the men were true to their description and some being scammers, it was pretty easy to find the genuinely interested ones from the fakes. It is a dating site for the wealthier crowd as we spend a lot of money but you can find a suitable candidate here.”

7. OKCupid – Best for millennials and young people

SpecificationRatingUser experience★★★★★Real profiles★★★★★Success rate★★★Customer service★★★★★

Pros

OKCupid is a mainstream dating app that caters to many different kinds of relationships. All you have to do is set that as what you are looking for, and they match you to like-minded people!

8.  Hinge – Best for hybrid serious and FWB relationships

SpecificationRatingUser experience★★★★★Real profiles★★★★★Success rate★★★★Customer service★★★★★

Pros

Popular with millennialsMatchmaking algorithm is great (apt for FWB)

Cons

Created for finding long-lasting relationshipsMay not find a large user base of casual sex enthusiasts

Hinge is a mainstream dating app that focuses on finding real romance—but it is also used to find casual sex and friends with benefits. The truth about Hinge is that it’s “designed to be deleted.”

But fear not! This app is incredibly popular with the younger crowd (18 to 29 years of age) and has filters to state the nature of the relationship you’re interested in. What Users Think About Hinge

“Hinge is amazing! I think the thing that I like about it is that if you don’t pay it limits you to 10 likes a day and so it’s more likely that people will pay attention to you rather than getting distracted by yet another profile. And everyone is more careful about who they pick so if you match you’re more likely to talk I think. It also does a great job of conversation prompts that go with photos or without. Definitely check it out.”

FAQs About Hookup Sites

Q: Are hookup sites safe?

Like any online dating platform, reputable hookup sites have embedded safety features that still require user discretion. It can be dangerous if you don’t take proper safety measures. Though there are a few options, only two rise to the top. HER is the best for women seeking women and Grindr is best for men seeking for men. These two sites also cater to non-binary people.
