UK electronic-noise duo Petbrick create a tantalizing sonic universe on their new album, Liminal

Plenty of bands do a lot with compact lineups, but few can match the huge black-hole vortex of sound that Petbrick creates. The London-based duo of British multi-instrumentalist and producer Wayne Adams and legendary Brazilian metal drummer Iggor Cavalera came together a few years ago with a plan to make “horrible noise” without compromise. But as Petbrick peeled away self-imposed limits, they wound up making something magical—and yes, as far as I’m concerned it’s magic when a band can bundle together cinema-worthy synth composition, D-beat, and experimental electronics and leave me wanting more. On their new second album, Liminal, Petbrick break their own mold again, exploring a planet in the throes of self-destruction while twisting a mix of styles—industrial, noise, samba, hardcore, hip-hop—into their futuristic diatribes. Some of those sounds might seem like unlikely bedfellows, but despite Petbrick’s disorienting atmospheres, listening to Liminal feels a lot like reading a page-turner of a sci-fi novel. Assisting them in their mission are a handful of guest vocalists who enhance their explorations: Converge’s Jacob Bannon peels the paint off the walls with his performance on “Grind You Dull,” while New York rappers Lord Goat and Truck Jewelz drop verses on “Lysergic Aura,” which could soundtrack a hallucinatory voyage to the underworld and back. One of the most powerful tracks is “Distorted Peace,” a doomy, droning missive featuring vocalist Paula Rebellato of Brazilian psych trio Rakta. Petbrick’s alternate world might be a dystopia, but it still offers an excellent escape from the daily realities of the one we’re in now.

Cueto, Harrison help White Sox get back to .500

Johnny Cueto pitched seven innings of two-run ball in what could be his final start in a White Sox uniform, and the host Sox evened their record at 80-80 with two games to play with a 3-2 win over the Twins Monday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Rookie catcher Carlos Perez hit a tiebreaking single and Josh Harrison hit a two-run single as the Sox won after Tony La Russa announced he is stepping down as manager.

It was the Sox’ fourth win in five games as they try to avoid a losing season, a small consolation after they failed to make the postseason after two seasons in a row playing October baseball.

Cueto (8-10) struck out four and walked none, lowering his ERA to 3.35 after he was signed to a minor league contract during spring training. He made 24 starts and credited his success to being healthy. He will be a free agent after the season.

“I want to pitch and I feel like I can pitch two or three more years,” Cueto said. “I would like to come back here but that is not my decision to make.”

Perez drove in AJ Pollock with a two-out RBI single against Griffin Jax (7-4) in the seventh. Liam Hendriks loaded the bases in the ninth but struck out Mark Contreras swinging for his 36th save.

Cairo was emotional after the game talking about La Russa. He paused several moments.

“To me it was sad,” Cairo said. “I was, it was emotional for me because I played for him. And he’s my mentor. I’ve learned so much from him. And of course I’m going to keep calling to keep learning. But we’re going to miss him here, for sure.”

The Sox will interview Cairo as they search for La Russa’s replacement.

“I feel really honored that they’re going to give me the chance to interview for the job,” Cairo said. “We’ve got a great group of guys in there like he said and I’m going to see what happens and go through the process. I know they’re going to interview more people. And just going to be ready to interview for the job.”

Most likely landing spots for available NBA free agentson October 4, 2022 at 3:49 am

NBA training camps opened this week, and players from all 30 franchises are preparing to refine their skills and build chemistry with their teammates for the 2022-23 season.

But a handful of serviceable players are still unsigned and not yet sure which team they will be helping this upcoming season, if any. Injuries, age and reduced minutes from previously playing on teams with deep rosters have lowered their stock as players, but several teams still have time to take a chance on these unsigned players and bring them in before the season.

Seasoned veterans such as Jeremy Lamb and Hassan Whiteside and former All-Star Blake Griffin are among the top unsigned players who could make a solid late addition to an NBA team, either as a role player for a contender or a mentor for young teams.

Here’s a look at the best unsigned players who still have a chance to find a home this season and where they could fit in best:

Who should the White Sox fire next?

After the announcement that Tony La Russa is retiring, should the White Sox consider firing anyone next?

After his two year run in Chicago, Tony La Russa has decided to call it quits on his second stint on the South Side of Chicago. After a very questionable hire, Jerry Reinsdorf and company are now on the look out for another manager to hopefully lead this team to a World Series run.

Statement from Tony La Russa, who announces he’s stepping down due to health issues, but also adds:
“Our record is proof. I did not do my job.” https://t.co/k8pRxmpa8W

Reinsdorf made the decision to hire his longtime friend La Russa back in 2020 and was met with a lot of negative responses (me included). Jerry probably felt bad firing La Russa back in 1986 and wanted to make things right by hiring him after La Russa had been retired for 9 years.

Coaching Staff

But what is next for the White Sox? How many coaches will stay on the staff for 2023? Is there anyone in the front office that will get fired? In my opinion, if your name is not Ethan Katz, then I don’t want to see you next year. Katz and the White Sox pitching staff was the only bright spot on this disappointing 2022 team. Standouts Dylan Cease and Jhonny Cueto leading the Sox in many pitching stats and Cease also contending for the American League Cy Young!

Now to the others on the coaching staff, Miguel Cairo was the interim manager during La Russa’s absences and did a fine job and is probably going to get an interview to be the full time manager, but I do not see that happening. Hitting coach Frank Menechino is the easiest fire of all time, the offense was atrocious at times during the 2022 season. The White Sox are currently 22nd in baseball in home runs, 17th in slugging, and 16th in OPS. These are not where this White Sox team should be.

Front Office

It is clearly a time of change for the Chicago White Sox and I believe that includes changes in the front office as well. As much as I would love Jerry Reinsdorf to sell the team or let his son take charge like he did with the Bulls, I know that won’t happen. However, a man can dream.

Hahn says Sox need to earn fans’ respect back after disappointing the way they did in 2022, says front office and everyone within team felt same levels of “disgust,” to use one of the words he listed.

It is reported that the White Sox will not be cleaning house, and that Rick Hahn will be leading the search for a new manager. But I still believe there needs to be some changes in the front office. Chris Getz is someone that I thought very highly of in the past, however after the whole Omar Viizquel situation, he seems to be a very easy person to fire as well. Executive Vice President Kenny Williams is someone that also is not going to be fired but his time in Chicago has run its course. He was very important to the 2005 White Sox when he was the General Manager, but he has not helped much since 2005.

Hopefully this organization can make some improvements this off season because they have a very talented roster and a fan base that wants to see a World Series on the South Side of Chicago.
