Will the White Sox pick the right manager for the 2023 season this time?

The White Sox have a variety of contenders battling for the position of manager, so Rick Hahn must make a significant choice.

Last season, Tony La Russa’s comeback led to 93 victories and a playoff appearance, but there seemed to be scandal after controversy, and it carried over into this year.

The Hall of Fame manager’s return to the Sox in 2023 was seriously questioned, but by late August, the issue was no longer relevant. La Russa went on medical leave due to a heart condition and never returned. On October 3, he formally resigned, stating that he was also receiving treatment for a different health issue.

The White Sox finished at 81-81, or exactly.500, but they themselves were below average. They never strayed below or above.500 by five games throughout the entire season. The White Sox had a.500 record 28 times during the season to emphasize this point.

This season, the White Sox have been:
1-1
6-6
13-13
14-14
15-15
16-16
17-17
18-18
19-19
20-20
21-21
22-22
23-23
33-33
45-45
46-46
48-48
49-49
50-50
51-51
56-56
63-63
66-66
67-67
68-68
76-76
80-80
81-81

Since La Russa left, several names have been suggested as potential contenders. The list of probable replacements makes sense if Hahn’s remarks are taken at face value. The Chicago White Sox, on the other hand, don’t always act in a rational manner.

According to Sportsbetting.ag released its betting odds for the next White Sox’ manager, and it does include names with no managing experience. Willie Harris, A.J. Pierzynski, Jim Thome, Chris Getz, Miguel Cairo, and Ozzie Guillen just to name a couple.

A talented but underachieving Chicago White Sox team has a lot of outstanding options who could step in and take them to the next level.

Matt Rhule fired by Panthers after 1-4 start

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers fired coach Matt Rhule on Monday, ending the former Baylor coach’s tenure five games into his third losing season.

Rhule, the first NFL coach to be fired this season, went 11-27 with Carolina. The Panthers fell to 1-4 with Sunday’s 37-15 home loss to San Francisco as 49ers fans made Bank of America Stadium their East Coast home.

Defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach Steve Wilks will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season. The 53-year-old Wilks spent one year as Arizona’s head coach in 2018, going 3-13.

Rhule did not immediately respond to voice and text messages on Monday.

The 47-year-old Rhule was lured away from Baylor with a seven-year, guaranteed $62 million contract by David Tepper, the second-wealthiest owner in the NFL.

Tepper was initially patient with Rhule following Sunday’s loss, but grew increasingly agitated and changed his mind on Monday.

Rhule said after the game he didn’t want to discuss his job security because he didn’t want make it about himself.

Rhule’s teams went 5-11 in 2020 and 5-12 last year.

The Panthers hoped Rhule could turn things around in his third year as he did at Baylor and at Temple before that. The team had constant turnover at quarterback under Rhule, with Teddy Bridgewater as the starter in 2020 and Sam Darnold and Cam Newton getting starts last year.

The Panthers traded for Baker Mayfield this offseason. But the 2018 No. 1 overall draft pick has been awful, ranking last in the NFL in ESPN’s total quarterback rating. Mayfield has completed 54.9% of his passes and is averaging fewer than 200 yards passing per game with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

The poor play at the game’s most important position put unsustainable pressure on Carolina’s defense. Under Rhule, the Panthers were 1-27 when allowing an opponent to score 17 or more points.

Mayfield injured his ankle in the loss to San Francisco and was in a walking boot after the game. It’s unclear if he will miss any time.

Mayfield was one of several players who spoke out in support of Rhule.

“We’re fine in the locker room when it comes to that,” Mayfield said. “There are a lot of plays that we just have to flat-out make — and he can’t do that. He can’t go make plays for us. He can’t do the execution for us.”

A key Chicago Bulls offseason addition surprises fans in a big wayRyan Heckmanon October 10, 2022 at 3:00 pm

With one preseason game to go, the Chicago Bulls are 2-1 in exhibition play and have looked like an Eastern Conference contender once again.

Even without Lonzo Ball, the Bulls have found ways to score, defend and ultimately win. Putting together a deep roster while filling in some needed areas over the offseason should have the Bulls in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

One of those offseason additions came to Chicago to fill a big need down low: Andre Drummond.

Drummond was brought on because the Bulls were bullied on the offensive glass time-in and time-out last year. As one of the league’s premier offensive rebounders for the past several years, Drummond’s arrival meant the Bulls should shore up that area immediately. However, one area the Bulls did not anticipate Drummond contributing in was shooting.

In the Chicago Bulls’ third preseason game against the Toronto Raptors, Andre Drummond showed off a new trick.

Drummond with the range ?@NBCSChicago @AndreDrummond pic.twitter.com/wyTMLXwuhN

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) October 9, 2022

After a decade in the NBA and being a career 13 percent three-point shooter, Drummond pulled up and knocked down all three of his attempts from distance against Toronto. In just 15 minutes on the floor, Drummond came down with nine rebounds and a trio of threes to give him nine points as well.

In the Bulls’ first two preseason games against the New Orleans Pelicans and Denver Nuggets, Drummond attempted zero field goals from beyond the arc. So, no one would have anticipated him pulling the trigger even once against the Raptors.

Heck, Drummond has only attempted double-digit threes, in a season, on five occasions throughout his career.

Last season, the Bulls struggled to find their range from three, especially after Ball went out. That’s one area this team needed to improve, aside from on the offensive glass. Who knew they could be getting both tackled in one signing, and from a guy who has never, ever been known as a shooter?

If Drummond has truly developed an outside shot, it’s going to present many more problems for the opposition when defending this Bulls second unit. Normally, Drummond is a guy who ends up finding himself down low after sometimes even bringing the ball up off a defensive rebound. But, eventually, he’ll find himself down low.

Now, he’s found a bit of comfort on the perimeter. Oh, boy. This season could be an entertaining one, at the very least.

Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields unsurprisingly defends Ihmir Smith-MarsetteRyan Heckmanon October 10, 2022 at 2:17 pm

Week 5 started out as bad as it possibly could have for the Chicago Bears.

Going down 21-3 in a hurry and looking like it was only going to get worse, the Bears had their backs up against a wall. However, second-year quarterback Justin Fields wasn’t about to let that happen.

Having one of his best and most-improved games as a pro, Fields helped lead the Bears back to take the lead late in the game. But, a fumble by wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette on the Bears’ final drive put an end to any hopes of a victory.

It is the play everyone will be talking about all week long, and some even want Smith-Marsette to be cut. Yet, Fields took the high road when asked about the game-altering fumble.

Justin Fields showed tremendous class when speaking on his teammate, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, and the Chicago Bears’ loss to Minnesota.

Cam called GAME ??

— Minnesota Vikings (@Vikings) October 9, 2022

When asked about the play that changed the outcome of the game, Fields had this to say:

“Yeah, it’s tough. But I know Ihmir. I know he’s feeling down right now. So, our job is to pick him up. And he’s a great player. Me, personally, I know what he can do on the field. He’s young… second year. He’s just got to learn from that mistake; keep going. But he can be one hell of a player in this league for sure.”

Now, on one hand, not many fans could argue with the Bears if they chose to cut Smith-Marsette. Within context, that play was about as selfish as a player could have made it. Smith-Marsette should have gone out of bounds, as he even admitted to after the game.

Instead, he chose to not only take more time off the clock but risk it all — and he lost.

But, on the other hand, it sure is a positive to see such leadership from Fields’ perspective. There are quarterbacks in this league who may not have taken the same approach when asked about a play like this one. Veteran quarterbacks like, say, Aaron Rodgers, might have chose a short-winded answer out of frustration.

That’s not Fields, though. Despite Smith-Marsette being a late addition to this Bears roster as training camp and preseason came to a close, Fields treated him as though he’s been here all along.

Leadership and integrity count for something in this league, and the Bears have that in their starting quarterback.

Chicago Bears’ poor roster construction was on display in the loss to MinnesotaTodd Welteron October 10, 2022 at 12:56 pm

The Chicago Bears nearly pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory against the Minnesota Vikings.

A penalty wiped out a phenomenal touchdown run by Justin Fields that would have given the Bears a four-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Ihmir Smith-Marsette was called for a questionable illegal block in the back on Fields’ run to the endzone.

The Chicago Bears had a chance to tie the game on their final drive but Smith-Marsette fumbled with just over a minute to go to effectively end the game.

Well, it was more like he had the ball ripped away from him by Cam Dantzler.

The fumble stings not just because it ended the Bears’ comeback hopes. It also hurts because Smith-Marsette could have run out of bounds, stopped the clock, and the Chicago Bears drive would have continued. Instead, he tried for a few more extra yards.

#Bears WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette said he should’ve run out of bounds on the fumble near the end of the game.

“It was a selfish play by me,” Smith-Marsette said.

— Sean Hammond (@sean_hammond) October 9, 2022

The fact that Smith-Marsette was even on the field is a reason the Chicago Bears lost. It is nothing against Smith-Marsette personally. He had a great career at Iowa but Smith-Marsette should probably be on a practice squad or preparing for XFL tryouts.

Instead, he was identified by Bears general manager Ryan Poles as a receiver who should be part of offensive coordinator’s Luke Getsy year one offense. He was part of a group of playmakers that Poles assembled that are not going to keep opposing defensive coordinators from losing sleep.

The Chicago Bears’ lack of talent on offense was a big reason why Fields and company fell just short of victory.

Justin Fields played well after he struggled mightily in his first four games. Fields completed 15 of 21 passes for 208 yards and threw a touchdown pass. He finished with 118.8 passer rating. Fields was outstanding in the second half.

Justin Fields in the 2nd half12-13, 135 yards, TD passing5 rush, 36 yards

— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) October 9, 2022

He hooked up with Darnell Mooney for a spectular 39-yard catch. After four horrible games, Chicago finally got to see hope that Fields can be the solution to the Bears’ nearly 75-year-old franchise quarterback problem.

The issue he faces is what many pointed out coming into this season: he does not have a lot of weapons outside of Mooney. It is not like Mooney has gotten off to a blazing start. He has just 10 catches to start the season.

Tight end Cole Kmet finally made a chunk play when he hauled in a 23-yard reception. He has been very quiet in the passing attack with just nine receptions on the season. Part of Kmet’s lack of effectiveness is because he is required to spend a lot of time blocking.

Fields has running backs David Montgomery, who had 82 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown, and Khalil Herbert whom he can count on. It seems like Getsy feels that same way with Fields needing three games to officially attempt over 20 passes. The other reason has been the offensive line’s play.

Chicago Cubs: The NL Central will have no playoff wins in 2022Vincent Pariseon October 10, 2022 at 11:00 am

The Chicago Cubs had a strong finish to the 2022 Major League Baseball season. Their schedule was very weak which allowed them to go into the offseason with some confidence.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t even close to enough as they finished 19.0 games out of first place with a 74-88 record. They finished in third behind the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers. St. Louis won the division at 93-69 but the Brewers missed out at 86-76.

Unfortunately, the division as a whole is going to come out of 2022 with zero playoff wins. As mentioned before, the Brewers missed out entirely and the St. Louis Cardinals were swept by the team that took the last Wild Card spot from them in the Philadelphia Phillies.

In the first game, the Cardinals were winning going into the 9th inning but they couldn’t close it down. A day later, Philly carried that momentum into game two and won the game and the series. After just two games, St. Louis is done. They played a whole two more games than the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs could start to see the division fall in their favor again in 2023.

This is a bad look for the division. It is unclear who is going to come out on top in 2023 because there is going to be some turnover. After the Cardinals went out the way that they did, there could be a few changes coming.

For one, Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina are done. They both announced their retirement before the season began before having great years on this great team. Unfortunately, they are now done. The next time we see them will be in the Hall of Fame.

After missing the postseason this year, you can bet that the Brewers plan on making some changes as well. The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates are likely going to be terrible again which means that the Cubs can compete in the division if the right moves are made.

The fact that the NL Central had no postseason wins should be both disgusting and good for the teams not named the Cardinals. It is clear that the division was weak and it is only going to be weaker. However, as mentioned before, the door is opening for the Cubs again.

NBA betting preview: Can the Lakers win over 44.5 games this season?on October 10, 2022 at 12:25 pm

As the Los Angeles Lakers’ superstars get older, the team might struggle to exceed their win total this season. AP Photo/Ashley Landis

The 2022-23 season is quickly approaching and our betting experts have got you covered. Over the next two weeks we are taking a look at how to approach some of the top teams in league and giving out some futures best bets before the season tips off.

Sports Betting Insider Doug Kezirian gives his thoughts on the best case, worst case and betting analysis for the Los Angeles Lakers.

All odds from Caesars Sportsbook

NBA betting preview schedule

Thursday: The case for the Boston Celtics and Golden State WarriorsFriday: The case for the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee BucksMonday: The case for the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles LakersTuesday: Who to bet for MVPWednesday: Betting win totals and awardsOct. 17: Social media and bettingOct. 18: NBA title odds and favorites

Best Case: LeBron James is an all-time great and basketball savant. If he’s healthy, he has the mental and physical aptitude to guide this squad to a postseason berth and possibly make a title run. Yes, he’s 37 years old and the Lakers missed the playoffs last season but they’re also two years removed from winning a championship. The health and durability of Anthony Davis will dictate their success but his ceiling is still pretty special.

Worst Case: Health derailed the 2021-22 campaign but even when the Lakers’ “big three” did play together, they were ineffective. In those 21 games, the Lakers were just 11-10. And when they were on the court together, the net rating was -3.5. That does not bode well for this season, even with a new head coach and system.

The Bet: Lakers under 44.5 wins

Betting Spin: I would play under 44.5 wins. Due to the All-Stars’ ages and recent propensity for injuries, the margin of error is just way too narrow. On top of that, the Western Conference is incredibly competitive. I do believe there is a scenario where things break their way and they make a deep run but I would rather play the percentages.
