Deciding Which Game to PlayWith so many games to choose from, When deciding which game to play, there are some key factors to pay attention to. The games on this list already hit the mark in terms of visuals and technology. To decide which game is right for you, you’ll want to ask yourself a few questions:

1.  What is your kink? Most of these games allow for customizable experiences and take you into different environments. However, some are catered to a more specific niche. For instance, Dominatrix Simulator is a game that’s made for subs who enjoy BDSM. Anyone who isn’t into that kink is not going to enjoy the game and shouldn’t waste their time on it. There are also hentai-specific genres or games that include characters resembling familiar stars in the adult industry.

2.  Do you have time? There are games that last 20 minutes and others that go on for hours. What are you in the mood for? The sex games that allow you to explore an entire universe could be played for days, while other games, like the ones created at the Citor3 studio, are designed for quickies.

3.  How important is storyline? Some porn games fall short in the plot department. That’s OK for folks who want total control over their avatar and simply want to enjoy hot sexual experiences. For people who enjoy the element of strategy, they’ll need more than a sex simulator or a multiplayer interactive universe such as 3DXChat. A great example of a game that requires strategy is XStoryPlayer, where you need to please the women to earn your reward.

However, the most important thing is having the right equipment. Make sure your personal VR equipment is compatible with the game before buying it. For instance, Dezyred (a great choose-your-own-adventure porn game) is compatible with Oculus Quest but not Oculus Go. This information is usually readily available to you at the bottom of the website homepage for most of these games.

Yes, the micro-transactions will eventually add up, so prepare to spend some money. This game is compatible with most headsets including Oculus Quest. Oculus Go compatibility is coming soon.

Holodexx is one of the most futuristic porn games, using advanced technology to bring photo-realistic game versions of your favorite porn stars to life. Using photogrammetry, Holodexxx has scanned some of the most beautiful girls in the biz to turn them into spicy game pieces.

The graphics in this game are absolutely unparalleled and we’re fascinated that the world is technologically advanced enough to do something like this. Stars like Riley Reid and Mia Malkova have been digitally copied so that you can get the full electric experience with them. Imagine trying to explain this technology to the avid porn-watcher in the 80s. It would absolutely blow their mind!

Plus, their scenes are really interesting. Turn yourself into a porn director by propping the girls where you want them and directing them through scenes. Or, you can explore Lady Euphoria’s banging body in your very own customized room.

Pros:

You start the game by designing your avatar with options that make them customizable from head to toe. Between hair color, body type, outfit and more, you have access to the technology to create your ultimate dream character. This game provides a uniquely sensual experience that allows you to connect with others across the VR porn world.

It adds a whole new layer to VR porn games by introducing you to real people who are experiencing genuine reactions to your virtual touch. The sounds they make are coming from genuine interest and weren’t manufactured or formulated by a computer. Someone can actually respond to your kinky words with actual thoughts. It’s incredibly riveting to be a part of such an active online sex community.

Given the intense design and unique approach, the price is right. You won’t be breaking the bank to experience this exciting VR porn game.

Pros:

Cons:

With a multiplayer game, your chance of getting laid depends on how the other players feel about you.

6.  Dominatrix Simulator – Best BDSM Game

If you aren’t into BDSM, then don’t bother reading this review because it’ll be a waste of time. Dominatrix Simulator was created specifically with doms and subs (especially submissives) in mind and isn’t for the faint of heart. If BDSM is your chosen kink, then do read on as this is the best BDSM VR porn game available for you.

The game begins by placing you in the submissive role of a prisoner under the watchful eye of dominating goddesses. They need you to obey their every command, or you risk getting devilishly punished. There are various dominating goddesses to meet as you make your way through this game, each with a unique way of running the temple.

With some of the best voice acting we’ve ever heard in a game, Dominatrix Simulator will have you forgetting where the temple fantasy ends and real life begins. You might find yourself getting lost in the hot sauce, but that’s OK. That is exactly how this game was designed to make players feel.

Pros:

Deep-dive into the BDSM fantasySexy characters punish youSome of the best VR porn visualsConvincing voice acting

7.  Let’s Play With Nanai – Best Hentai VR Porn Game

If you don’t already know, hentai is a combination of manga and anime, usually in a sexual and explicit context. Over the last decade, hentai porn has outranked other popular categories in the porn industry, so it makes sense that there’s a VR porn game dedicated specifically to it. If you love hentai or manga, you’ll go nuts for this game which is based around one cute and sexy character: Nanai.

Nanai is your virtual girlfriend who you get to play with! For around $30, you can have access to Nanai whenever you want. And, she really is the perfect little hentai girlfriend who does and says all the right things. Her level of kink and naughtiness is within your control, so she really is perfect for you! With teledildonic technology, Nanai can be synched up to your sex doll, making the experience even more realistic as you play with the bubbly and sweet Nanai.

We’re big fans of this game, but we wish that a little more creativity and money were put towards the graphics. They aren’t up to par with some of the other sites on this list. However, in the world of anime and hentai, flatter cartoonish art is sometimes better and more desirable.

Pros:

One of the best hentai porn gamesGet the girlfriend experienceNanai can be whoever you want her to beHer reactions feel real

Cons:

Visuals are lackingOnly one character

8.  Citor3 – Best Short Games

Citor3 is actually a studio that specializes in short and kinky 3D VR porn games. If you’re in search of a quick fix, Citor3 will surely provide. Each game has its own theme that you’ll love. Whether you’re into BDSM, public sex, or want to get raunchy in an office, Citor3 has you covered. Because the games are shorter, a lot of special attention has been put into making the graphics amazing. You might not be there for a long time, but you’ll definitely have a good time.

A lot of research went into the development of this game with the creator digging into his research of the porn-lover psyche. They want to create a tiny world within each game where every player leaves feeling satisfied and content. They’ve done a great job so far and we’re excited to watch how this studio evolves.

They have over 20 titles for you to browse through with each one providing something unique and tantalizing. Because the games are so short, you can give one a try before diving into the rest of them. On the homepage, you can play a preview of the games to get a taste for what’s to come. You’ll see right then and there what we mean about the incredible graphics.

Pros:

Short games for quickiesPreviews of the gamesMultiple gamesThe creators are always updating the games

Cons:

No option to make the games longerSome games are better than othersVisuals could be better for a handful of the games

9.  XStoryPlayer – Most Captivating

Think about why you love 3D VR porn. Is it for the escape to a new world? If you want to get lost in a beautiful VR porn game for hours (and we mean close to seven hours per game), then you need to play XStoryPlayer. This game is captivating, incredibly immersive, and extremely engaging. It’s one of the only games on this list that requires real psychological strategy.

The characters in XStoryPlayer aren’t going to jump when you tell them to. To get laid playing this game, you need to finesse, coax, and even date them. For instance, in this game you might find yourself on a dating site within the game (talk about meta!) and meeting up with a cutie in town.

While they want you to think there’s no guarantee for getting laid—because that makes the game more fun—you can rest assured that you will get your rocks off playing this! Once you win over a girl, there are no restrictions to what you can do with her within the game. Don’t get too rough though, because the characters will rebuff you if they aren’t into it. You just have to ask yourself, are you charming enough to win her over?

Pros:

Strategy implementationNot every character wants you, making the game more interestingYou have to court the charactersComplex storylineInsanely immersive

Cons:

Not for instant gratificationToo long for some folks (five to seven hours)Visuals could be better

10.  VRLove – Choose Between Free Mode And Story Mode

There’s a lot to love with the VRLove game. This 3D VR porn game puts you in the driver’s seat in terms of who you are able to interact with and get frisky with. This game comes to you from VirtualRealPorn, which is famous in the industry for having the sharpest visuals. This game is no different and feels effortlessly smooth as you navigate through VRLove.

Choose to play in Free Mode or Story Mode. Story Mode will guide you much more and it will feel more game-like. Free Mode will feel a bit like a choose-your-own-adventure game. Picking between the two is really just a matter of preference.

We like Story Mode a bit better because there’s more of a tantalizing increase of tension and a real plot to follow. Who doesn’t love a little foreplay? However, no matter which mode you choose, you will love the way the virtual models interact with you in this game. If you enjoy being dominating, you’ll be pleased to know that these characters were created to obey your every wish and command.

Pros:

Smooth and visually stimulatingSharp imagery and texture visualsStory Mode or Free Mode availableConvincing submissive charactersTeledildonic synchronization

Cons:

Not many, but other games have been more fun in our opinion

Honorable Mentions:Date Night – A puzzle game like candy crush that rewards you with 3D VR sex. This is a free game, but will tempt you with micro-transactions.

Egirl VR – A realistic girlfriend game where you can talk and play with a virtual girlfriend in different scenes and environments

SexMachineVR – A post-apocalyptic game where players can use toys and machines to engage with the characters

Honey Select – A hentai VR porn game with extremely detailed and advanced customization features

Pornflix And Chill – A simple gaming experience that begins with you watching porn in a room with a girl. As you cozy up to her, you eventually become the show!

La Douche – “Douche” in French means shower. This game takes you on a voyeuristic adventure where you can watch a beautiful avatar go through her routine.

Fallen Doll – Using a sex robot, it’s your job to please the customers in your virtual sex club. Earn virtual money as you play your way up through the game!

Captain Hardcore – This is more of a party than it is a game! Hang out with as many characters as you want while you orchestrate a fantastical orgy.

Virt-A-Mate – Customize your avatar to play this immersive sex-simulation game!

MirageVR – This game didn’t make the list because it’s not ready yet! The game, still in development, is one to watch out for as it has the best graphics we’ve seen thus far in any VR porn game.

VR Porn Games FAQs:

What should I do if I am new to playing VR porn games? The best way to experience VR porn games is to visit VRPorn.com. They are at the top of our list for a reason and a great way to start out. Not only do they provide a variety of games, but they also provide a user-friendly interface and the sexiest visuals in the game. They are, by far, the best option.

Are sex simulators the same as VR porn games? Some of the games on this list don’t take plot largely into account. They place you in a fantasy world where you can essentially get away with whatever you want. This is attractive to players who love control, but it might get boring for someone who wants a bit more gameplay.

Do I need the most expensive VR equipment? This hurts to admit, but the best VR porn gaming is had by those with the best equipment. As this technology advances, the headsets will become cheaper. We do suggest you invest in a decent headset though, and one that’s compatible with most sites and games. Oculus makes great headsets that get the job done.

If quality isn’t all that important to you, you can always get a mediocre headset or try to enjoy the VR sex game on your mobile device. You won’t be getting the most out of the experience, but it’s an affordable way to dip your toes in the water to see if you’d like to eventually invest in better equipment.

Do all “free games” include micro-transactions?A micro-transaction is something that usually occurs in free VR porn games. You’ll begin playing for free, and then you’ll be prompted to pay for the characters to perform for you. It happens a lot when playing free VR porn games. They have to make their money somehow.

Are all VR porn games customizable? Most VR porn games will let you customize your avatar or the character you will be banging. These customizations can sometimes get really specific. Design the woman of your dreams or make yourself well-endowed. The possibilities are endless. There are some games that have created the characters for you already, which can also be nice.

Are VR porn games compatible with teledildonic sex toys?Teledildonic sex toys are toys that are able to be synched to your VR porn viewing or playing. They add a physical element to the already immersive experience, and they’re freaking awesome. While not all games incorporate teledildonics, more studios are beginning to see the value in it. We predict that eventually, most (if not all) games will give you the option to utilize teledildonic technology.

Cubs reduce season ticket prices 5.1% for 2023

When the Cubs announced their attendance for 2022, anyone who had seen the smattering of empty seats in Wrigley Field throughout the season wasn’t surprised. They’d sold 2,616,780 tickets to home games over the course of the season, their lowest paid attendance in a non-pandemic impacted season since 1997.

Now, the team is lowering season-ticket prices. The Cubs announced the change on Wednesday, cutting prices by an average of 5.1%. According to senior vice president of Marquee 360 Cale Vennum, who oversees the Cubs’ ticketing, all full-season ticket holders will see their ticket prices lower by 2.67% to 6.72%. The largest price cuts are for seats in the terrace, upper level, or bleachers.

“We know that season tickets are a long-term commitment, and our fans have a lot of choice about where they’re going to spend their money,” Vennum said. “The dynamics are changing in a really competitive market. And so, we hope that by decreasing the ticket prices for next year, it really demonstrates our commitment to the season ticket holders and those are the folks that have ultimately supported us on this journey as we go to build the next great Cubs team.”

The Cubs’ rebuild — paired with the COVID-19 pandemic — has, naturally, corresponded with a two-year attendance slump. Following the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, which cleared fans from the stands for health and safety reasons, the Cubs drew a paid attendance of 1,978,934 in 2021.

This season, the 74-88 Cubs, who finished No. 3 in the NL Central, still managed to draw the ninth-highest paid attendance in MLB. But it paled in comparison to their 2019 total (3,094,865, fourth overall).

“We’ll go through as many as – the last time we added it up, it was like 5 million lines of data – taking in you know ticket sales, weather team performance, schedule, all sorts of different things,” Vennum said of the decision to lower season ticket prices. “And then we have to combine that with the feedback from our fans.”

He compared their ticketing operation to the process on the baseball side — but instead of melding baseball analytics and player feedback, they look at ticket data, conversations with season ticket account representatives and annual surveys.

Vennum didn’t provide figures on the Cubs’ season-ticket holder retention from 2019 through 2022, saying he didn’t have the numbers readily available and adding that renewal had been “strong.”

Season ticket-holders, and those on the waiting list, have to weigh the price against the team’s rebuild timeline. When the team is losing and seats are readily available, it’s also harder to make back money on the resale market. At least the new balanced schedule should drum up some intrigue for previously rare matchups.

The rebuild timeline, however, is hard to pinpoint. This offseason will be a pivotal one, but the Cubs don’t want to tip their hand for fear of a competitive disadvantage on the free agent and trade markets.

“I know that we have some holes to fill,” president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said at the end of the season, “and we’ll be aggressive to try to fill those holes in the best way possible.”

He reiterated that the goal is to be “competitive” next season, in addition to looking to the future.

When pressed on what that meant, he said: “We certainly want next season to look a lot more like our second half [this year] than our first half. And I think if it does, we do have a chance to be in the race and play meaningful games throughout the entire season. And hopefully, that means competing in October.”

Season ticket holders have that half-commitment to go on when deciding whether to renew before their first payment deadline next month. Vennum, too, pointed to the Cubs’ momentum at the end of the season, posting a 39-31 record in the second half, after it was clear they were out of the playoffs.

“I think it makes that decision a lot easier as you’re deciding to renew your tickets as a season ticket holder,” he said, “that, ‘Hey, there’s momentum behind the team, and my price is going down; this is a good time to stay on this ride and be a season ticket holder with the Cubs.'”

Zach Lavine ruled out of Chicago Bulls Season Opener

Bulls shooting guard, Zach LaVine will not play in Wednesday’s season-opener against the Miami Heat.

Chicago Bulls guard and All-Star, Zach Lavine has effectively been ruled out of the first game of the 2022-23 NBA regular season.

Per Shams Charania, LaVine will miss Wednesday’s opener against the Miami Heat due to left knee management.

Bulls All-Star Zach LaVine (left knee management) will miss tonight’s opener vs. Heat.

LaVine was listed as questionable on Tuesday which came as a surprise. On Friday of last week, LaVine spoke after practice saying that he feels ‘really good’ and isn’t ‘having any aches and pains’ on the knee that he had the procedure on following last season.

The 27-year-old underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in May for an injury that lingered throughout last season, so the Bulls are understandably taking a careful approach to begin the year.

The Bulls were cautious of LaVine’s minutes during the preseason, as he sat the majority of the second half in games that he played.

He is also expected to sit out Friday against the Washington Wizards and then make his season debut on Saturday versus the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Different but the same

Though differing in mood, the three works in Joffrey’s Beyond Borders program are structurally of a type: abstract, ensemble-based, heavy on unison choreography that exhibits the patterns that can be formed by dancers forged according to an exacting technique. Featuring a world premiere by Chanel DaSilva, alongside a 2013 work by the late Liam Scarlett, and a 1978 work by late Joffrey cofounder, resident choreographer, and artistic director Gerald Arpino, the program demonstrates continuity of concept and coherence of craft throughout the company but little range.

Beyond BordersThrough 10/23: Thu-Fri 7:30 PM, Sat 2 and 7:30 PM, Sun 2 PM, Lyric Opera House, 20 N. Wacker, 312-386-8905, joffrey.org, $36-$180

The curtain rises at the stride of footfalls treading the length of the stage in Scarlett’s Vespertine, wherein dancers clothed in opulent burgundy pace the stage beneath chandeliers composed of glass goblets shaped like raindrops, dimly lit. A single figure stripped to near nothing walks crosscurrent up the depth, and the others neither make way nor obstruct. Set to music by Bjarte Eike, John Dowland, Arcangelo Corelli, and Francesco Geminiani, the tone is somber, the sound baroque. The word “baroque” may derive from irregular pearls or warts, referring at first to an obstacle to logic and becoming, over time, the descriptor of art, architecture, music, and time formally characterized by ornamentation, thematically characterized by the spectacular encounter of the sensuous with the spiritual.

In Vespertine, the theme is elaborated upon via costuming (also designed by Scarlett), especially the silky, slippery, corseted dresses worn by the women, which are sometimes manipulated into capes and other shapes, sometimes draped upon sometimes shirtless, sometimes clothed men—who sometimes reach behind and pull them up like schoolboys shaming their classmates. The slide of the fabric is occasionally mimicked in the surface they dance upon, particularly in a solo slip to the floor on the edges of pointes (another arrangement of satin, hardened and then softened)—later repeated once by a dancer in flat shoes—perhaps just enough times to remind us of the precarity of even solid ground. The semblance of nudity and the formality of dress, as well as the binary nature of the partnerships, recalls but cannot surpass Jiří Kylián’s 1991 Petite MortVespertine is beautiful but forgettable.

The Joffrey Ballet ensemble in Chanel DaSilva’s colōrem Cheryl Mann

Whereas Vespertine relies on decoration for drama, DaSilva’s colōrem offers stark minimalism in full force: hordes of dancers in unitards that cover their hands and feet, divided into tribes of red and gray, set to a score by Cristina Spinei. It’s inspired by Tim Tadder’s Nothing to See, a photography project that contrasts bodies painted to a matte mannequin finish in contrasting colors, entwined in poses that bind and blind. Presented against white backdrops along the three sides of the stage, perhaps to reference the white box of the gallery, the work begins with abstraction, bodies arrayed back to back, with deliberate unison motions that create structures that recall diagrams of chromosomes. The figures are tiny against a vast canvas, smaller than chess pieces as they divide into troupes by color and return to intermingle.

Only when the white walls fall does a pair of individuals emerge—on Saturday evening, Amanda Assucena in gray and Xavier Núñez in red—Eve and Adam in a postapocalyptic wasteland or cosmonauts at the edge of a dark universe. Their duet is exploratory, sometimes combative, with deep backbends by Assucena, hailing a domain on the verge of construction or collapse.

José Pablo Castro Cuevas and Natali Taht in Gerald Arpino’s Suite Saint-Saëns Cheryl Mann

The program closes with Arpino’s Suite Saint-Saëns, which according to Joffrey artistic director Ashley Wheater has not been performed by the company in almost 20 years. In four movements set to lush music by Camille Saint-Saëns that begins against a simple backdrop of cirrus clouds on a blue sky, dancers clad in ombré candy colors, the work is light and bright and airy—and performed at incredible speed. It conveys the brilliance of sunlight shimmering on water, of egg whites whipped into meringue, of something pure and delicious briefly and wonderfully sensed.

The Chicago Cubs should absolutely not trade for Shohei OhtaniJason Parinion October 19, 2022 at 6:20 pm

Although we’re still over a week away from the start of the 2022 World Series, the MLB rumor mill has already begun to churn around the Chicago Cubs.

Almost immediately after returning to his native Japan, Los Angels Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani turned heads with his comments in regards to the Angels season, a year in which he said he has a “negative impression” of how things played out.

And almost immediately after the comments surfaced, rumors began to swirl around potential trade partners with many fans clamoring for the Chicago Cubs to go after Ohtani.

Although Shohei could be argued to be the best player in baseball right now, a trade with the Angels would not make any sense for the Cubs. Yes, that’s right. The Cubs should not trade for Shohei Ohtani.

Although any trade for Ohtani would undoubtedly make the Cubs a better team on both sides of the ball (or really all three), it could be a devastating blow to the team’s championship hopes in the near future.

Ohtani and the Angels recently reached an agreement on a $30 million deal for the 2023 season which will be his last before hitting free agency. It was the largest deal in arbitration history. But it’s not the money that makes the deal unwise for the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs should not trade for Shohei Ohtani during the offseason.

In reality, there’s not a dollar amount too large for Shohei Ohtani (unless you’re the Ricketts family). But any trade for the versatile superstar would certainly require the Cubs to give up both Major League and farm system talent.

After numerous years of a weak farm system while the Cubs attempted to contend for a World Series, the team finally has a top-ten farm system in baseball. But what they don’t have is a top-ten team at Wrigley Field.

Unfortunately, one player won’t make them top-ten. Not only that, it would essentially decimate the farm system, eliminating any chances of the Cubs contending in the mid-2020s.

And while there remains hope that the Cubs spend money this offseason, it’s hard to believe that whatever they do spend would ultimately be enough to contend for anything more than a Wild Card or a shot at a division championship.

That’s not to say that there couldn’t be playoff baseball at Wrigley Field in 2023. Rather, there should be Chicago Cubs playoff baseball next year.

With an already weak NL Central and an expanded playoff bracket that sees 40% of MLB teams reach the postseason, it would be a disappointment for the Cubs to end up short of the playoffs.

Alas, now is not the time to make a splash at the trade deadline. At least not for a 3-month rental that they could just as easily sign prior to 2024, keep the farm system intact, and avoid sacrificing any major league or top prospect talent.

Perhaps this could change should the Cubs be performing well at next year’s trade deadline. But for now, the team must stay on course and sign as much talent this offseason to contend for next year.

It also could make sense if the Cubs are able to negotiate a sign-and-trade with a long-term extension attached to Ohtani but it’s highly unlikely that he doesn’t hit free agency for his own reasons.

Cubs fans think of last year as 2014. The Cubs showed some promise (and even finished above .500 for the second half of the season) and while the team was hard to watch, they’re now in a legitimate spot to return to the playoffs next year.

They could have a bright future ahead with the right moves. Unfortunately, Shohei Ohtani is not one of those moves. At least not until after November 2023.

Soul-jazz organist Odell Brown helped write Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’

Since 2004 Plastic Crimewave (aka Steve Krakow) has used the Secret History of Chicago Music to shine a light on worthy artists with Chicago ties who’ve been forgotten, underrated, or never noticed in the first place.

I’ve been delving into Windy City jazz for most of my life, beginning with the out-there, Afrocentric sounds of the Sun Ra Arkestra, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and the like. These days, as an old man, I’m also drawn to soul jazz—an earthier, groovier style that incorporates elements of hard bop, blues, gospel, R&B, and of course soul. In soul jazz you hear a lot of tenor saxophone and electric guitar, but the genre’s most characteristic sound is probably the Hammond organ, showcased in a small combo. Organist Odell Brown led his share of combos like that, and he was one of the best to ever do it—but that hardly sums him up.

Odell Elliott Brown Jr. was born on February 2, 1940, in Louisville, Kentucky, and started playing keys at age four thanks to his mother, who gave piano lessons in her spare time. His father bought him a baby grand “in spite of himself” (as Brown wrote on his website), and in his teen years he got into electronics and model trains and played in school bands.

At age 19, Brown left for Nashville, Tennessee, to check out colleges and get acquainted with the music scene—he’d hoped to follow his dad to Fisk University, an HBCU founded in 1866. He took private lessons in music theory and orchestration and started playing with several musicians attending Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State University. Instead of going to school, though, he ended up getting popular enough as a musician to support himself by leading a band.

The U.S. government then drafted Brown into the army, where he worked with the 179th Army Post Band in Fort Carson, Colorado—an experience he described as “more than enough to make up for what I missed at college for two years.” He sharpened his skills as a player and arranger and picked up vibes, timpani, and bass.

After an honorable discharge, Brown headed to the Windy City in 1964, where he reconnected with his old comrades from Tennessee State to form Odell Brown & the Organ-izers. The best-known player, other than Brown himself, was probably tenor saxophonist Artee “Duke” Payne, who would become somewhat famous (or notorious) as a jazz bagpiper. (He put out a funky late-60s pipe-driven single on M and M Records.) Payne was raised in Mobile, Alabama, and had come to Chicago to work with sax star Sonny Stitt; with Stitt and on his own, he’d toured the midwest and gigged at local rooms such as McKie’s, the Sutherland Lounge, and the Gate of Horn. The quartet’s other two members were sax man Tommy Purvis (like Brown, born in Louisville) and drummer Curtis Prince, a San Antonio native who’d moved here to play with bassist Cleveland Eaton (who joined the Ramsey Lewis Trio in ’64).

The Organ-izers cemented their reputation and built an audience with a regular gig at the Hungry Eye in Old Town, and soon they signed to the Cadet imprint of the legendary Chess Records. The ensemble first recorded in July 1966 at Chess’s Ter Mar Studios, laying down tracks for their debut album, Raising the Roof. On the LP’s back cover, late Jazz Showcase owner Joe Segal (also a noted critic) nails a lot of what makes the group so distinctive—and a lot of what I love about soul jazz.

Odell Brown & the Organ-izers covered Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage” on their 1966 debut album.

Segal praises the intelligence and creativity of Brown’s band, contrasting them with organ groups fixated on volume and endurance. He singles out lead track “The Honeydripper” (written in the 40s by Joe Liggins) by exclaiming, “Never have I heard it played with such groovy abandon.” When he unpacks the group’s cover of the Beatles’ “Day Tripper,” he notes the breadth of their stylistic palette: “The Organ-izers underly their melody with a Latin beat, and then Purvis rhapsodizes on the theme before Odell Brown takes it into a ‘bluesville’ finale.” He describes Payne’s tune “Enchilada Joe” as “hard-driving calypso” and their version of Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage” as “the most artistic and deep-probing musical venture of the entire set. . . . Both tenors are ‘Coltrane-ish.’”

This unpretentious but powerful range is the best thing about the hard-working organ combos of the era, which managed to be progressive and crowd-pleasing at the same time.

The Organ-izers then recorded the 1967 LP Ducky for Cadet, which featured ace session peeps such as Phil Upchurch on bass and “Master” Henry Gibson (Curtis Mayfield’s guy) on congas, plus lush production by the legendary Richard Evans. The title track showcases Brown’s funky, unrestrained organ playing, and the whole band spreads out on the Latin-tinged “Get Off My Back.” That same year, the combo released Mellow Yellow, which includes a quirky take on the Donovan cut of the same name, Martin Denny’s exotica classic “Quiet Village,” and more Latin sounds on “Que Son Uno.”

The title track of the 1967 Organ-izers LP Ducky

Brown also got his start as a solo artist at around this time, cutting the 1969 Cadet LP Odell Brown Plays Otis Redding, which you might call “jazz funk” (though nobody would have at the time). Brown lays down cracking B-3 moves on standards such as “Hard to Handle,” “Respect,” and “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay,” effortlessly transforming them all into rump-shaking party starters. The production, by R&B sax giant Gene Barge, doesn’t hurt either.

Barge also appears on Brown’s next LP, 1970’s Free Delivery, which features bassist Louis Satterfield (later of Earth, Wind & Fire) and other masterful session players such as guitarist-writer-singer Cash McCall and drummer Morris Jennings (both covered in SHoCM). Album highlights include the insanely danceable “Nitty Gritty” and another Beatles cover, “Come Together,” whose trudging beat becomes surprisingly soulful.

“Nitty Gritty” is from Odell Brown’s 1970 LP Free Delivery. (Despite the YouTube title, it’s not an Organ-izers release.)

Brown was working as an arranger and producer for Chess Records, and in 1969 he supported the incredible Dorothy Ashby on the Cadet release Dorothy’s Harp. But after Leonard Chess died that same year, he chose to leave the label. Purvis passed away in 1970, and Brown put the Organ-izers on hold indefinitely. Payne kept making music and eventually also became a math teacher at Betsy Ross Elementary on the south side. Prince would go on to lead the jazz band at Carver Area High School, which made a sought-after private-press LP in 1979.

Brown appeared as a session player on Richard Evans’s Dealing With Hard Times in 1972 and Minnie Riperton’s classic Perfect Angel in 1974. (He also claimed on his website to have worked with Curtis Mayfield, but despite how often that information has been repeated, I could only find evidence they’d crossed paths—no specific credits.) Also in ’74, Brown jumped to the Paula label for what turned out to be his final formal release under his own name, a self-titled LP that edged into jazz-fusion territory. The mellow “Song Theme” adds gentle flute; the smooth 11-minute version of Stevie Wonder’s “I Love Every Little Thing About You” surely had clubbers doing stepper moves for days.

“South of 63rd” appeared in 1974 on Odell Brown’s final formal release under his own name.

As the 70s progressed, Brown kept working as a hired gun, playing on albums by the likes of Eddie Harris and Cleveland Eaton. He also made his highest-profile connection—he began collaborating with Marvin Gaye. Brown appeared on albums such as Live at the London Palladium (Tamla, 1977) and “Here, My Dear” (Tamla, 1978). Most notably, he has a writing credit on Gaye’s last LP, Midnight Love (Columbia, 1982), specifically the massive hit “Sexual Healing.”

While Gaye was working on Midnight Love, he was in recovery from a cocaine addiction. Music writer David Ritz claimed that the title of the album’s biggest smash came from something he told Gaye—supposedly Ritz saw some sadomasochistic comic books at Gaye’s place and said the singer needed “sexual healing.” Plenty of people have denied this, including Brown, who said he never met Ritz. What’s not in dispute is that Gaye wrote the reggae-influenced song with Brown and guitarist Gordon Banks, using a Roland TR-808 drum machine and a Jupiter-8 synthesizer (gifts from the label). Brown said that a melody he tapped out became a crucial piece of “Sexual Healing,” and his obituary for Minnesota’s Star Tribune quotes him as saying “It took two minutes to write.”

Regardless of who contributed exactly what, Brown got a cowriting credit on the sexy postdisco tune (which Blender magazine would describe in 2005 as “the plaintively blue-balled model for basically every slow jam”). It spent ten weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart and won Gaye two Grammys in 1983.

Brown’s career should’ve been peaking, but sadly this is where it came off the rails. Though neither he nor Gaye is alive to explain what happened, they stopped working together. Brown had struggled with severe depression all his life, and by the time the Grammys were televised in February 1983 and he learned about the awards, he was living in a transient hotel in Los Angeles. After Gaye’s murder by his father in April 1984, he started spiraling downward.

Fortunately Brown came back from the depths. In 1994 he moved to Richfield, Minnesota, at the urging of the love of his life, fellow musician Barbara Whiteman, who’d repeatedly traveled to California to help him recover. In 1999 they married, bringing him some welcome happiness and stability. Minnesota Public Radio reported in 2003 that he’d tried to deal with the annual downturns in his mental health around Christmas by self-producing an album of holiday songs. Brown also launched Over the Edge Productions, which he described on his website as “a modern, progressive music production company that deals intently with composition, arrangements, musical performance, digital recording, consultation and education.”

Brown died peacefully in his sleep in Richfield on May 3, 2011, at age 71. Thankfully we can still hear his feisty organ playing, and that won’t change—the recordings he left behind are a healing balm for fans of soulful music.
