For International Repair Day on Saturday, October 15, artist and environmental activist Jenny Kendler, 42, hosted “Before and After: Mending a Life” along with artists Catherine Schwalbe and Katie Vota. The event took place next to Mending Wall, Kendler’s interactive installation currently on view outside of the Field Museum. At “Before and After: Mending a Life,” attendants were encouraged to bring and repair textiles from their own homes, and together “consider mending in your life, your community, our world,” according to Kendler’s website. Tools and supplies such as thread, elastic, and buttons were provided, and no experience was necessary to participate.

Mending Wall is a collaborative project created by Kendler and inspired by Robert Frost’s poem of the same name, as well as Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea novels, and a visit Kendler made to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. The project consists of a 25-foot and dry-stacked stone wall, built from reclaimed Chicago cobblestone. Visitors of all ages are invited to write messages addressing their “individual hopes and fears in this moment of intersecting crisis” and place them in the cracks of the mortarless wall. With the help of the Pandemic Collections team at the Field, the messages will be on display in the near future at the museum, and they will also be archived to be hopefully shared 100 years from now.

Kendler explains how a wall can help mend our divides. “This wall is a partial wall, tumbling down at the ends . . . it implies impermanence, porosity. As Frost says, ‘Something there is that doesn’t love a wall . . .’ The wall reminds us that our city, our communities, are constructed from materials, whether literal or cultural, that were hewn, shaped, and well-worn by those who lived here before us. Do we want to keep walls intact, or like the wall in the project, will we let them fall, or even work actively to dismantle them? At the conclusion of Mending Wall the [accompanying] native plant garden will remain, but the wall itself will be disassembled and the stones distributed to gardens throughout the city.”

Speaking of well-worn or repurposed walls, the Epiphany Center for the Arts, which used to be the historic Church of the Epiphany in its previous incarnation, is currently displaying Amanda Christine Harth’s “Blue Collar,” an exhibition about the often overlooked contribution of Africa and African Americans to denim textiles. It features indigo-dyed textiles, customized denim garments, and original denim quilts created by the artist—many of them representing the Black experience in America, and their connection to the fabric. “There are so many more stories to be told about the true history of Black people’s contribution to denim culture,” says Harth, 34, who has been celebrating the fabric in multiple ways over the years.

“In 2016 and 2017, I cocurated an exhibition with Ciera McKissick of AMFM called ‘Indigo Nation’ at Chicago Art Department in Pilsen. It was a denim exhibition and pop-up highlighting local artists and designers. I continued to study denim culture and started learning more about the history of indigo. During this time I continued to host other workshops and events focused on creative entrepreneurship and streetwear fashion,” Harth says. “In 2019, I opened a weekend exhibit, ‘Museum of Streetwear,’ showcasing local fashion designers including denim pieces by Ron Louis and Dearborn Denim. In November 2021, I conducted an artist residency at SAIC at Homan Square on the intersectionality of denim culture and Black culture. At the end of my residency I worked with the denim fashion icon Michael White and multimedia artist Alexandria Eregbu to create a community quilt of upcycled denim and other textiles with residents of Homan Square.”

With all this experience, Harth has become an authority when it comes to denim. Her continuing interest in connecting streetwear, art, and local designers is certainly a force for good for our local fashion community. Though small in size, her exhibition at Epiphany is a delightful culmination of all her work during these years. Displayed in Epiphany’s Guild Room, which happens to be blue, Harth’s works prove how versatile denim can be, and do justice to indigo’s reputation for being a celestial color.

Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls: 1 Best Bet

The Chicago Bulls open as betting underdogs for the fourth consecutive game as they welcome the 3-0 Boston Celtics to the United Center.

The 1-2 Chicago Bulls have a tough assignment ahead of them tonight as they look to bounce back after Saturday night’s ugly 128-96 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Zach LaVine was welcomed back into the lineup Saturday, and appeared seemingly unbothered by his knee ailments, as he recorded 23 points on 9-17 shooting. His running mate, Demar Derozan, did not see the same efficiency, regressing from two 30-point outings to open the season down to 13 points on 3-9 shooting.

Saturday night’s loss also saw the first loss of the year our best bet of the day blogs, with Ayo Dosunmu failing to record an assist for the final two halves of the game, keeping us under his 3.5 assist total. We are switching things up in tonight’s case, and for the first time this year will be playing the Bulls on the spread, potentially to the surprise of many. It’s going to take a full team effort, but this Chicago Bulls team has had success against the spread against Boston under Billy Donovan and could have a positive matchup. Let’s get this back on track tonight, and GO BULLS!

2022 Bulls Best Bet Record: 2-1

Chicago Bulls +6 (Sportsbook odds may vary)

It may come as a surprise to many to see the Chicago Bulls as the best bet of the day following a slow start to the season, and now facing the defending Eastern Conference Champion Boston Celtics, but for a handful of factors, this does seem like a great spot to play the Bulls on the spread.

As far as gambling indicators go, a 3-0 Celtics team with wins over Philadelphia and Miami has driven the public perception of this Boston team through the roof off the heels of a deep playoff run over the summer. Pair that with a 1-2 Chicago Bulls team coming off of a blowout loss, and on the surface you would expect this line to be an eight point or higher spread. Having paid attention to this Celtics team dating back to their surge last year, if the oddsmakers thought Boston was going to roll to an easy one, this line would be noticeably higher.

The bets and money percentages reflect my thoughts on this one being a little too good to be true as well, as the Celtics are receiving nearly 70% of bets and money, despite the line either sticking right at 6 points, or in some locations even dropping to 5.5, making it even easier for Boston to cover, enticing even more bettors over to the Celtics side.

To give you a ‘how and why’ path to the Bulls covering this game, unlike Saturday’s loss to Cleveland, this Chicago Bulls roster matches up to this Boston team quite a bit better defensively, presumably allowing the Bulls to hang within striking distance. Over the last five meetings between these teams, Chicago has covered four of five, including an early season outright win last November. Without any ball-dominant, undersized guards to torment the Bulls guards on the defensive end, Chicago has managed to make these games very competitive.

High-level scoring guards have been a nightmare for Chicago during Lonzo Ball’s absence, and while I’m not suggesting Jaysom Tatum and Jaylen Brown won’t be effective tonight, I’m suggesting the Bulls at least have a more well-matched toolbox to throw at them. Tonight will be a great test of Patrick Williams‘ impact to the game, as the young wing-player has been largely absent from the offensive end of the floor, but has earned a starting role for his defensive prowess. His efforts have been questioned through three games, but will have to make a true impact if the Bulls expect to compete tonight.

The third quarter may prove to be the decider for this contest as both of these teams have a perfect 3-0 record in the third quarter of each of their games. The Chicago Bulls rank 2nd in the NBA through three games in third quarter points allowed, proving to have shown positive adjustments out of halftime on the defensive end. Boston has shown similar improvements offensively out of halftime, as they rank third in the same category offensively. If the third quarter is dominated by either team tonight, you can expect the final score to reflect it.

Best of luck tonight and Go Bulls! I will see you Wednesday night for the Bulls home meeting with the Indiana Pacers.

The Blackhawks are already dealing with goaltending troubleVincent Pariseon October 24, 2022 at 5:44 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks‘ goaltending is already a problem simply because Petr Mrazek and Alex Stalock are not that good of a tandem. They chose to start Arvid Soderblom in the AHL because it is ideal for him to play better down there on a good team.

However, he has already been recalled because Mrazek is out with an injury. He was the backup in Sunday’s crazy win over the Seattle Kraken. Stalock got the start and played okay enough to win the game. He made 30 saves on 34 shots.

No matter what, as the season goes along, it is not going to be easy to be a goalie on this team. There are going to be defensive breakdowns that are less than ideal and that is because they just aren’t that good of a team.

Combine that with where all of these goalies are in their careers and you don’t have the recipe of a top NHL defensive team.

The Chicago Blackhawks are already dealing with goaltending trouble this year.

Soderblom might be the goalie of the future. The Hawks are being forced to have him on the roster right now because of the Mrazek injury but they would probably like him to play as little as possible. They made that clear by picking up Stalock and putting Soderblom in the AHL.

His development is obviously important to this team which is why that move makes sense. There is a chance that the Rockford Ice Hogs are a good team so that would be much better for his development and confidence.

The days of having a true number one like Corey Crawford are done for right now. It was nice to have Marc-Andre Fleury last year but they won some games that they probably shouldn’t have and that hurt their draft stock. This year it is all about rebuilding the roster for the future.

Yes, there is already trouble in the blue paint. However, it is not that big of a deal because of the fact that this is a non-competitive season for Chicago.

They are playing okay right now but the way they are winning is not sustainable. Hopefully, Mrazek comes back healthy and is able to help this team get through the year.

Chicago Bears: Mac Jones vs Justin Fields could be electricVincent Pariseon October 24, 2022 at 6:44 pm

The Chicago Bears are taking on the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football this week. They will close out the week seven chapter of the schedule on one of the game’s biggest regular season stages.

The last time that these two teams met, the Bears lost by a lot of points. Bill Belichick is still in charge of that team as the coach and GM but Tom Brady has obviously moved on. Now, after a rough start to the season, the Patriots have been on a roll.

Bailey Zappe has been starting for the Patriots over the last few weeks while Mac Jones recovers from an injury. He has been very good and many would argue that he has been better than Jones who was drafted with a much higher pick.

However, they are going back to Jones now that he is available which will make things very interesting. If he struggles, you have to wonder how long before Belichick goes back to Zappe.

The Chicago Bears are taking on the New England Patriots on Monday night.

Mac Jones was selected just a handful of picks after the Bears took Justin Fields. They were amongst the big group of quarterbacks that went in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Whenever two of those guys meet in a game, that is going to capture the headlines.

It may be an electric matchup if both Jones and Fields come to play. If the Patriots and Bears each play as they have been over the last decade, this one won’t be very fun for Chicago. It is on Matt Eberflus and his staff to make sure that this thing doesn’t get out of hand.

Fields has shown improvement every week but it hasn’t translated to a lot of points yet. Between Justin Fields, David Montgomery, and Khalil Herbert, this Bears team can run the ball well. Unfortunately, that is what Belichick and the Patriots’ defense crushes.

There is no doubt that Fields will have to make some throws if they want to stay in this game let alone win it.

This has a chance to be an upset for the Bears but don’t count on it. At the end of the day, all that matters is that Fields plays well and shows more improvement.

He has limited weaponry which makes it even harder but he also needs to be able to make others around him better if he wants to be a superstar in the league.

Although we know who is probably going to win, the Mac Jones vs Justin Fields story in this game will make it an electric game (at least to start).

Fantasy basketball tips and NBA betting picks for Mondayon October 24, 2022 at 7:38 pm

Why Cole Anthony will play a bigger role tonight. (0:32)Why Cole Anthony will play a bigger role tonight. (0:32)

ESPN’s fantasy basketball and basketball betting tips cheat sheet is your pregame destination for basketball betting predictions and our best intel and data to help you make smart fantasy and wagering decisions. NBA game odds for October 24 are provided by Caesars Sportsbook, and fantasy advice is based on ESPN 10-team leagues.

What you need to know for Monday’s games

Smith’s Spot: The Pacers won’t have veteran centers Myles Turner or Daniel Theis available against Joel Embiid and the 76ers in South Philly this evening, vaulting Jalen Smith (49% available in ESPN leagues) into a bigger role. The third-year big just dominated the Pistons on Saturday to the tune of 19 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks – good for nearly 47 DraftKings points. The winless 76ers sit 26th in rebounding percentage, suggesting Smith is in a good spot to provide value for double-double props and in all fantasy formats.

Last Guard Standing: Orlando guards Gary Harris, Markelle Fultz, and Jalen Suggs have all been ruled out for tonight’s matchup against the visiting Knicks due to respective injuries. This scenario should see Cole Anthony (42% available) play an important role as a key scorer and playmaker for the Magic. Even Anthony’s assist prop (5.5 on DraftKings) looks appealing, as he leads the team with nearly 54 passes and nine potential assists per game through two outings.

Spot Game?: The Jazz and Rockets play tonight, featuring two of the five teams that were projected to win fewer than 25 games this season. Exciting. The casual bettor may look at a 3-0 team facing an 0-3 team and question this basically being a coin-toss game. Don’t be that person. If Houston is going to cash in on this spot, it’ll likely be on the back of Jalen Green crushing his scoring props (first half of last season: one shot every 2.4 minutes, second half: 2.0 and through three games this season: 1.7).

Living On The Edge: Paolo Banchero has been the talk of the league, as the rookie has scored 20-plus points in all three games, averaging 8.7 boards in the process. But is his projected point total a bit too high tonight? The Knicks were a top-10 defense last season and are again this season. While Banchero has been effective, he’s looked like a rookie at times. After going 11-for-18 from the field in the opener, he’s just 12-for-37 since, thanks in large part to 13 3PA (0 in his NBA debut). New York has a pair of bigs and a tough physical matchup for Banchero, making this a potential letdown spot after an impressive start.

Backing Brooklyn: Since the beginning of last season, there have been 40 Nets games with point totals of least 225. The Nets were just 9-17 ATS when favored in those games, but 8-5-1 ATS as an underdog. Furthermore, in six of those eight covers, under tickets cashed. Food for thought as the Grizzlies play their third game (in three different cities) in four days.

Replacing Scottie: Coach Nick Nurse told reporters Scottie Barnes would “miss some time” due to an ankle injury suffered against Miami over the weekend. With Barnes off the floor last season, Pascal Siakam‘s usage and assist percentages spiked. Given Barnes’ expected absence, Siakam enters this matchup as a building block in DFS formats and a nice target for passing props, as his assist number is 4.5 on DraftKings. For those in shallower redraft leagues, adding Toronto’s Gary Trent Jr. (26.5% available) is a winning move; he averaged 2.2 more DraftKings points per 36 with Barnes off the floor last season. It’s worth noting Trent’s 3-point prop sits at 2.5, while he just lofted a dozen 3-pointers against Miami on Saturday

Game of the night

Orlando Magic at New York Knicks7:30 p.m ET, Madison Square Garden, New York

Line: Knicks (-7.5)Money line: Magic (+240), Knicks (-305)Total: 221.5 pointsBPI Projected Total: 221.4 pointsBPI Win%: Knicks (77.7%)

Ruled out: Jonathan Isaac (knee), Jalen Suggs (ankle), Gary Harris (knee), Markelle Fultz (toe), Moritz Wagner (midfoot)Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Fantasy streamer: Terrence Ross (available in 97.2% of leagues). Ross has stepped up his scoring in the injury absence of Jalen Suggs (in addition to Markelle Fultz). Ross has scored in double digits in all three games, but a huge outing on Saturday has bolstered his season averages to 17.7 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 3.0 3PG, 1.3 APG and 0.7 SPG. With Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Wendell Carter Jr. and Cole Anthony drawing much of the defensive attention, Ross has been able to feast off open looks and imbalance defenses. — Snellings

Best bet: Paolo Banchero over 17.5 points. As pointed out in the open, some day Banchero will have a down scoring game. But, Banchero is the primary scoring option fo the Magic, and is likely to get a large number of shots in every game. I projected him to average 19.5 PPG, and thus far in his first three NBA games he’s averaging 23.3 PPG. His expected points scored on any given night is high enough, now, that he could potentially have a down game and still score more than 17.5 points. — Snellings

Best bet: Jalen Brunson over 5.5 assists. Brunson was brought in to be the primary creator for the Knicks. I projected him to average 7.1 APG this season, and in his first two games he has dished nine and six assists, with zero turnovers. His opponents, the Magic, rank in the bottom third of the league thus far with 115.5 points allowed per 100 possessions, so Brunson and the Knicks should have plenty of opportunities to generate points. — Snellings

Breaking down the rest of the slate

Indiana Pacers at Philadelphia 76ers7:00 p.m ET, Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia

Line: 76ers (-12)Money line: Pacers (+550), 76ers (-800)Total: 230.5 pointsBPI Projected Total: 230.8 pointsBPI Win%: 76ers (87.8%)

Ruled out: Myles Turner (ankle), Daniel Theis (knee)Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Fantasy streamer: Benedict Mathurin (available in 62% of leagues). Mathurin is not a streamer. He should be universally rostered, averaging 24.0 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 3.7 3PG, 2.0 APG and 0.7 SPG in 28.7 MPG in his first three NBA games. Until he is rostered in the majority of leagues, Mathurin will be a fixture in this space. — Snellings

Best bet: Joel Embiid over 41.5 points+rebounds. Saturday night against the Spurs, Embiid recorded his 27th career game with at least 40 points and 10 rebounds. Since his debut in 2016, he has had 22 such games, one more than James Harden. To earn their first win of the season, the 76ers will rely heavily on Embiid down low against an undersized Pacers frontcourt. So far this season, Embiid has averaged 27.0 points and 13.3 rebounds, so I like his chances. — Eric Moody

Toronto Raptors at Miami Heat7:30 p.m ET, FTX Arena, Miami

Line: Heat (-3.5)Money line: Raptors (+140), Heat (-165)Total: 215 pointsBPI Projected Total: 217.7 pointsBPI Win%: Heat (62.2%)

Questionable: Scottie Barnes (ankle)Ruled out: Victor Oladipo (knee), Caleb Martin (suspended), Otto Porter Jr. (hamstring)Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls8:00 p.m ET, United Center, Chicago

Line: Celtics (-6)Money line: Celtics (-240), Bulls (+196)Total: 225 pointsBPI Projected Total: 225.4 pointsBPI Win%: Celtics (72.9%)

Ruled out: Robert Williams III (knee), Danilo Gallinari (knee), Lonzo Ball (knee)Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves8:00 p.m ET, Target Center, Minneapolis

Line: Timberwolves (-8.5)Money line: Spurs (+278), Timberwolves (-355)Total: 234.5 pointsBPI Projected Total: 239.4 pointsBPI Win%: Timberwolves (74.5%)

Questionable: Kyle Anderson (back)Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Best bet: Over 234.5 points. There is a strong chance that this matchup will be high scoring. The Spurs and Timberwolves rank among the top 12 in offensive rating. In addition, the Spurs rank 26th in defensive rating and both teams rank among the top 12 in pace. In the last 13 meetings between these two teams, the over is 9-4. — Moody

Brooklyn Nets at Memphis Grizzlies8:00 p.m ET, FedExForum, Memphis

Line: Grizzlies (-1)Money line: Nets (-105), Grizzlies (-115)Total: 233.5 pointsBPI Projected Total: 239.1 pointsBPI Win%: Grizzlies (53.7%)

Questionable: Dillon Brooks (thigh)Ruled out: Seth Curry (ankle), Markieff Morris (personal), Jaren Jackson Jr. (foot), Ziaire Williams (knee)Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Utah Jazz at Houston Rockets8:00 p.m ET, Toyota Center, Houston

Line: Jazz (-2)Money line: Jazz (-130), Rockets (+110)Total: 232 pointsBPI Projected Total: 238.8 pointsBPI Win%: Jazz(69.6%)

Questionable: Alperen Sengun (illness)

Ruled out: Jae’Sean Tate (ankle), TyTy Washington Jr. (knee), Udoka Azubuike (ankle)Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Best bet: Jalen Green over 23.5 points. Green is coming off the second-worst shooting performance in his last 12 games, scoring 22 points on 31% shooting against the Bucks. Although one positive is that he posted a season high 31.3% usage rate against Milwaukee. In a very exploitable matchup and a game that figures to be high scoring, Green has a strong chance of getting back on track at home against the Jazz. — Moody

Best bet: Lauri Markkanen over 31.5 points+assists+rebounds. So far this season, Markkanen’s versatility has been on full display. It’s early, but his 24.0 PPG, 9.7 RPG and 3.7 APG are all on pace for career highs. It should be easy for him to replicate those numbers against a Rockets team that ranks last in defensive rating. — Moody

Fantasy streamer: Usman Garuba (rostered in 0.9% of ESPN leagues) is firmly on the streaming radar as the Rockets take on the Jazz. Houston will already be without Bruno Fernando and Jae’Sean Tate, and now Alperen Sengun is questionable because of an illness. Garuba averaged 8.0 points, 13.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per 40 minutes last season. — Moody

Denver Nuggets at Portland Trail Blazers10:00 p.m ET, Moda Center, Portland

Former Bears OL relishes win over Green Bay Packers

A former Bears offensive lineman was pretty happy Sunday

The Chicago Bears are bad this season. That’s not a surprise, as many analysts predicted the Bears would struggle with their roster and dead cap space problems. However, their rival, the Green Bay Packers, are underperforming through the season’s first seven weeks. One former Bears offensive lineman, now with the Washington Commanders, was pleased with himself after their Week 7 win.

The Commanders held on to beat the Packers 23-21 in one of the NFL’s big surprises this weekend. The Packers have dropped three games in a row and now have a 3-4 record. After beating the Bears on Thursday night in Week 6, the Commanders have now won two in a row. They also have a 3-4 record.

Charles Leno Jr. had an excellent quote after the win

Following the win, former Bears offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr. gave his take on the win. He took a shot at the Bears’ expense and the Packers’.

“I’ve beat the Packers probably three times in my career now. I played in Chicago for seven years. That man number 12 [Aaron Rodgers] he can be a lot. Personally, it’s a win for me. Back-to-back, I beat the Packers and the Bears two weeks in a row; uh, I’m a happy man.”

Leno played for the Bears from the 2014 season through 2020. The Bears beat the Packers twice while Leno was there. Once in 2015 and then the second time in 2018. Leno should be happy after the past two weeks. He’s in a much better place in Washington this year than in Chicago. The Bears haven’t beaten the Packers since Leno left Chicago. The Bears have lost seven in a row to the Packers.
