1 injured after extra-alarm fire spreads through four homes in Logan Square

One person was hospitalized after an extra-alarm fire spread through four homes in the Logan Square neighborhood Tuesday morning.

The fire began just after 6 a.m. at a three-story home in the 2400 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, according to Deputy District Fire Chief Robert Jurewicz. The blaze spread to three neighboring buildings and about 125 firefighters responded to the scene, he said.

A man inside the home where the fire began was hospitalized in good condition, Jurewicz said. The nature of his injuries was unknown.

The building where the fire started was gutted but firefighters were able to keep damage to a minimum in the three adjacent buildings, Jurewicz said.

At least seven people were displaced by the fire, officials said.

The blaze was under control by 8 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields closing the rushing gap on Lamar JacksonRyan Heckmanon November 8, 2022 at 3:22 pm

It is fair to say that nobody saw this coming — nobody.

If there’s a single soul out there who believed that Justin Fields would be busting loose, this much, then we need to find that person and ask for receipts. The Chicago Bears quarterback has been turning heads for a few weeks now, and turning a serious corner in his development.

Although it’s not yet equating to wins and losses — and we can blame the defense for that — Fields has officially arrived. He is enjoying a full-blown second-year breakout, and all fans can do is sit back, relax and watch the next chapter unfold one eye-popping play at a time.

First of all, Fields has certainly taken a step forward throwing the football. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has done a phenomenal job with Fields in terms of getting him easy, open looks and coaching him to find those sooner rather than later. Reading the field has been a gigantic positive in Fields’ last few games — something we’ve been waiting to see.

But, where Fields has truly shined is when he uses is legs — and he’s been so good that he’s closing the gap on the NFL’s best in that department: Baltimore Ravens quarterback and former MVP, Lamar Jackson.

Justin Fields has Chicago Bears fans raving, and is set to surpass Lamar Jackson as the premier rushing quarterback in all of football this season.

.@justnfields is an actual cheat code ??? pic.twitter.com/Ecg9TfM4cw

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) November 8, 2022

It’s remarkable, really. Fields has been on a tear his last four games, and his latest act included breaking an NFL record held by the greatest rushing quarterback the league has ever seen in Michael Vick.

In those four games, he has rushed for a total of 408 yards. On the season, Fields has 602 rushing yards. So, over his past four games, he has doubled his production over the first five games of the season.

Jackson, meanwhile has totaled 635 rushing yards on the season to go with two rushing touchdowns. Fields has notched four rushing touchdowns, including one in each of his last three games.

If we’re judging by Fields’ production these last four games, he is on pace for 1,418 rushing yards over the course of the 2022 season which would shatter Jackson’s record set back in 2019 where he ran for 1,206 yards that year.

Should Fields continue down this path, he’ll have an NFL MVP trophy in his future. To be only a season and a half in and exploding onto the scene like he is, without much talent around him, is astounding. This is what the Bears were expecting when they moved up to draft him — but was anyone expecting this kind of breakout, and this soon?

All eyes were set on a 2023 breakout and a 2022 season that saw him improve, but Fields is setting the league on fire and Bears fans should be ecstatic. This franchise has something special brewing with number 1.

Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine to resume normal playing schedule?Ryan Heckmanon November 8, 2022 at 2:00 pm

A dozen games into the season, and the Chicago Bulls sit at 6-6 after splitting a quick 2-game back-to-back with the Toronto Raptors.

In the first matchup, Toronto came a way with the win. Monday night, though, it was the Zach LaVine show — en route to a 111-97 victory.

For two games, the Bulls saw Toronto consistently bring double teams to DeMar DeRozan, and in this second contest, the Bulls swing man only finished with nine points and took a mere six shots.

However, LaVine and DeRozan know how to work off of each other when teams choose to focus on one of them, and that’s exactly what transpired. LaVine went off for 30 points in a well-rounded performance where he scored from all over the floor. He knocked down 4-of-8 from three-point land, hit step-back jumpers and, yes, finished at the hoop occasionally.

After the game, LaVine seemed to reiterate his firm stance that, if it was up to him, he’d be playing in every game this season instead of only playing once in back-to-backs.

Zach LaVine may be turning the corner with his nagging knee issues, and the Chicago Bulls could have something to look forward to.

Zach LaVine keeps making clear that he would play every game if it were up to him. Bulls don’t have another B2B until Dec. 10-11.”We’ve had a tough schedule to start off. Now we have a a day or two off between every game. I’m happy with that because you’ll see me in the lineup.”

— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) November 8, 2022

For the early stages of this season, the plan has been to keep LaVine fresh and monitor his minutes, especially when it comes in back-to-backs. LaVine was never going to play in both games when the Bulls have to endure those quick turnarounds.

However, that tide may be changing if LaVine is starting to look and feel more like himself.

Zach showed off the full repertoire tonight.

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) November 8, 2022

If LaVine is able to come off of his restrictions and his knee is feeling that much better, then the Bulls will hopefully be at full strength as they try to endure a brutal Eastern Conference playoff race throughout this season. Not always having LaVine on the floor is tough, and can mess with the team’s rhythm, so having him around at full strength would allow the Bulls to find their groove more easily.

In eight out of 12 games this year, the Bulls have had LaVine. In those eight games, LaVine has averaged 21.9 points, 4.1 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals. He’s shooting a modest 44 percent from the floor, yet knocking down over 43 percent from long distance.

If LaVine can continue to evolve his game into more of a shooter, especially within the midrange, he’ll have a much better shot at prolonging his career rather than living above the rim — and the Bulls will be better off for it, too.

In order for the Bulls to take a big step forward, it’s going to have to be LaVine who takes them there. He has to prove he can be that guy.

Former Bears wide receiver signs with the 49ers practice squad

A former Bears wide receiver was signed to the 49ers practice squad

The Chicago Bears have recently seen some former talent at the wide receiver position land jobs elsewhere. The Bears unit has been upgraded recently with the addition of Chase Claypool. However, the team doesn’t have great wide receiver play outside of Darnell Mooney and Claypool. Some former Bears players the team had to cut for performance reasons are finding another chance as the league continues to add injuries in the 17-game regular season.

According to the NFL Transaction wide for Monday, the San Francisco 49ers signed former Bears wide receiver Tajae Sharpe to the practice squad. Sharpe signed with the Bears in the offseason and was placed on the teams’ injured reserve in August with a rib injury. The team released him in early September. When he was released, it was reported that head coach Matt Eberflus said Sharpe’s injury would sideline him for the entire 2022 season. That appears not to be the case.

Sharpe caught all two of his passing targets in the preseason for 44 yards with the Bears in the preseason. He was considered a big-bodied playmaker for quarterback Justin Fields before the injury. Now Sharpe will have the chance to prove he can get on the field for a 49ers team that is battling for a playoff spot in the NFC.

Tajae Sharpe is emerging as a big-body target for Justin Fields, a welcomed sign for the Bears offense from Saturday’s 19-14 win over the Chiefs. https://t.co/m85eDDQfeq

This former Chicago Cubs superstar opted out of his contractVincent Pariseon November 8, 2022 at 1:00 pm

There are a lot of former Chicago Cubs All-Stars playing across the league for other teams. Some of them are having major success and some of them probably miss the good old days. One of them, however, is opting out of the contract that he had with an elite team.

Anthony Rizzo was traded by the Cubs to the New York Yankees. He is the only Cubs star that was traded away that stayed with the team that he was sent to. However, he decided to opt out of the contract that he had signed with the Yankees after last year.

Now, Rizzo is officially a free agent. In leaving the Yankees, he says goodbye to one of the best teams in the American League. However, they might take a few steps back if some of their other stars are sent away or start to regress as they did for most of the second half of 2022.

It will be interesting to see what is out there for Rizzo once free agency actually begins on Thursday. There is still a chance that he goes back to the Yankees for more money but that honestly doesn’t feel likely at this point.

Former Chicago Cubs star Anthony Rizzo is opting out of his NYY contract.

Rizzo is going to get paid handsomely despite being in his 30s. He was sensational in 2022 and one of the only players that hit well for the Yankees once the postseason came around.

In the regular season, he had a slash line of .224/.338/.480 for an OPS of .819. He smashed 32 home runs and had 75 RBIs and 77 runs scored. With all of this, he accumulated a 2.3 WAR which isn’t bad at all.

It isn’t elite-level numbers like he used to put up but it is still very good. Lots of teams will pay for 32 home runs, a decent slash line, and some good first-base play.

There might be a chance that the Chicago Cubs take a look at him. We all know that they have been rumored to be interested in Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox but if he decides to go back to the south side or elsewhere they could try to land Rizzo back.

No matter what, Rizzo will always be a part of Chicago Cubs’ history in a positive way so it will continue to be noteworthy whenever he is in the news. Now, we wait to see where this former fan-favorite will end up. You can be sure that he will help them win games.

Meat Wave make postpunk big enough to swallow you whole on Malign Hex

In March, Meat Wave barreled through a pandemic-era dissection of the American labor market with the sardonic, sawtoothed “Honest Living,” laying bare the corrosive effects of depending for your survival on a morally bankrupt system that treats you like a disposable nobody. It’s an apt first single from their fourth full-length, October’s Malign Hex (Swami), and mines that misery for a tense, bristling downhill run that foregrounds the Chicago postpunk trio’s skill at weaponizing melody. But on much of Malign Hex, Meat Wave marinate in the ugliness of the world rather than stampeding through it, setting the mood slowly and needling you with every note. These songs rumble forward with the inexorable power of a tank. Joe Gac’s bass lines, as heavy as steel-plate treads, obliterate the earth as they lay down their own tracks, and he leaves plenty of space for drummer Ryan Wizniak to crank up the foreboding with thunderclap accents or fervent propulsion. Front man Chris Sutter unloads tight guitar stabs with the precision and force of a stamping press, and his controlled shouts pop like bacon grease on a hot pan. While “Honest Living” makes being an office drone sound as shitty as it is, the lumbering “Merchandise Mart”—as formidable as its massive namesake building, which once had its own zip code—makes those soul-destroying “always on” work structures feel inescapable. More bands should aspire to play songs that big.

4 Indianapolis Colts players the Chicago Bears should pursue this offseasonTodd Welteron November 8, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Use your (arrows) to browse

The Chicago Bears made a lot of headlines last week with all the trades they made. This week it is the Indianapolis Colts making news.

The Colts fired head coach Frank Reich and replaced him on an interim basis with former All-Pro center Jeff Saturday. Saturday has never coached above the high school level but owner Jim Irsay is never one to be conventional.

Maybe Bears head coach Matt Eberflus would have been named the interim coach had he still been the defensive coordinator in Indianapolis. Irsay was a fan of Eberflus during his tenure running the Colts’ defense.

Eberflus leaving Indianapolis is the least of Irsay’s worries. The Colts have been wandering the quarterback wilderness ever since Andrew Luck abruptly retired before the 2019 season started. The Colts had the good fortune of having Peyton Manning and then Luck guide their teams from under center.

Since Luck left, the Colts have had Jacoby Brissett, Carson Wentz, and Matt Ryan at quarterback. Wentz and Ryan showed their best football days are long gone.

The Colts are an absolute mess right now. They appear headed towards a rebuild.

Speaking of teams in a rebuild, the Chicago Bears are in the middle of one. While Justin Fields is showing he is ready to be a franchise quarterback, the Bears’ roster is bereft of talent-especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Chicago traded away Roquan Smith and Robert Quinn, thus depleting the team of its two best defenders. The Chicago Bears’ defense is sliding down the NFL rankings. They are now 20th in points allowed.

The Miami Dolphins had no trouble moving the ball up-and-down the field. The Dolphins had 379 yards through the air and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was hardly pressured by the Bears’ pass rush.

While Fields was setting records on Sunday, the Chicago Bears’ comeback attempt fell short because wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown dropped a fourth-down pass late in the game. Drops have been a problem at wide receiver with the group only having a 61% catch percentage.

The Chicago Bears will have over $100 million in salary cap space for the 2023 offseason to address their defensive and wide receiver problems. With the Colts in disarray and Matt Eberflus’ connections to the team, there are four players general manager Ryan Poles could target to bring to Chicago.

Monday’s win over Toronto was a Bulls model that has staying power

Billy Donovan has no problem with a DeMar DeRozan 40-point game.

As a matter of fact, the Bulls coach welcomes it.

But he also knows that if his team is to meet the expectations of the front office and at least advance to the second round of the playoffs this season, 40-point nights can’t be the norm.

There has to be a spreading of the wealth, there has to be a game like Monday.

One night after losing to the Raptors in Toronto, the Bulls came back and beat the visitors from up North 111-97 at the United Center.

Six players in double figures, led by Zach LaVine’s 30, while two players scored nine points each, with one being DeRozan.

“You got to give credit to DeMar,” LaVine said. “Passing it around, taking on the double team. I think we just played harder [Monday].”

And while nine points from DeRozan won’t get it done on most nights, it’s the type of basketball that Donovan feels is sustainable.

“The way I look at is [DeRozan] gets 30 a night, Zach gets 30 a night, Vooch [Nikola Vucevic] gets 25 a night, and then we’ve got a bunch of guys getting four?” Donovan said. “Like are there enough points on the board to really be a good, quality team? So it’s never been about, ‘Hey DeMar, you need to take less [shots].’ My goal would be can we have five-to-seven guys at the end of 82 games that are in double-figure scoring?

“If you look at the Milwaukee [playoff series last year], as great as Giannis [Antetokounmpo] was and [Khris] Middleton was out, look at what Grayson Allen did to us from behind the three-point line. You have to have it where everyone is to a certain degree a threat.”

What had Donovan’s mind at ease following Monday’s game was the practice time headed his way. The Bulls (6-6) played their Eastern Conference-leading 12th game, and that included a league-high four back-to-backs since the regular-season tipped off.

They have just three games over the next 10 days, and won’t see another back-to-back until Dec. 10-11.

Considering they’ve had to use morning shootarounds like practices, and have only had LaVine (left knee management) in the mix for a few of those, there was still a lot Donovan wanted to build out on both ends of the floor.

That time is coming.

“It’s important that we utilize and maximize those days,” Donovan said. “It might not always be full contact, but I do think getting on the court is important. We’ve gotten a lot out of shootarounds, but I think we’ve got to go back to defensive stuff, we’ve got to keep trying to build out offensively. As much as you show it on film it’s great, but I also think there’s merit to getting between the lines and doing it as well.”

Having as healthy a roster as they’ve had since camp will help.

LaVine has been able to get more work in, while Coby White (thigh contusion) and Andre Drummond (sprained left shoulder) were on the mend, but progressing.

“The base [packages] for the most part are in,” Donovan said. “You’re always adding things and maybe subtracting things. There’s things you think that could be pretty good, end up not being as good and you scrap them. How we’d like to play as far as how we’d like to get out in transition, more ball movement … I think what we need more than anything else, especially with some of our young guys is a lot of attacking close-outs, reading the defense, where to attack it, how to space it, relocate it. We need to work on more of those concepts.”

High school basketball: Kenwood touts chemistry, worries about experience on first day of practice

Darrin “Dai Dai” Ames, Kenwood’s star senior guard, isn’t the type to sugarcoat anything. The Broncos had several crushing losses last season and Ames always detailed the failings directly. He repeatedly said things weren’t right with the chemistry between his talented teammates. Kenwood’s stars weren’t on the same page all the time.

A new season began on Monday, the first day of practice across the state. Ames is stronger now, he’s matured physically since March and he says there is a different feel in the locker room today.

“Everyone knows we have to play as a team if we want to win,” Ames said. “We have to do the little things. That stuff matters. I want to be the leader they need. I’m trying to lead by example.”

Ames committed to Kansas State this summer and will sign his scholarship on Wednesday. The talented guard was never fully healthy after December last year but still led Kenwood to a 26-9 record. The Broncos lost to Young in the supersectionals.

“[Ames] is the closer,” Kenwood coach Mike Irvin said. “He’s one of the best players in the country and I couldn’t write a better script than to have him with this young group.”

Irvin is quick to boast that he has the most talented team in the state and he’s probably right. Sophomore Bryce Heard transferred to Montverde (Fla.) and Davius Loury left for Donda in California, but Kenwood reloaded.

There are three transfers: Isaiah Green from Hillcrest and Tyler Smith from Leo. Chris Riddle, a 6-6junior, is back after a year in Arizona. He started high school at Kenwood.

Jaden Smith, a 6-11 junior, and Calvin Robins, a 6-5 junior, return and will be major contributors this season.

“Robins does it all,” Ames said. “He hustles, rebounds and blocks shots. He does all the things we need. That’s going to make a big difference.”

Then there is Aleks Alston, a 6-8 sophomore that could be the most highly-regarded prospect on the team. Irvin says he may start.

“The sky’s the limit for what he could be a year from now,” Irvin said. “He already shows the flashes.”

Solomon Mosley, a 6-7 senior, is a solid rebounder and leader. He grew up with Ames and will be the team’s backbone.

Kenwood’s Solomon Mosley (32) blocks a shot by Darrin “Dai Dai” Ames during practice.

Kirsten Stickney/For the Sun-Times

“We have pushed the egos aside and are becoming a family,” Mosley said. “Last year we fell short because we just weren’t together.”

Kenwood’s entire rotation is likely to go on and play college basketball. That’s eight to ten players. The amount of talent on hand is immense for a high school team. Green and Smith were stars at other schools last year, but the remaining juniors and Alston are untested. It generally takes time for a player to fully acclimate to the speed and intensity of high-level Public League basketball.

“That’s the one thing,” Irvin said. “We have the most talent in the state, hands down. But I’m worried about the lack of experience in big games. We are going to have to see how that goes.”

A lot will be revealed very quickly. Kenwood and Young will face off on the first day of the season, Nov. 21, at DePaul’s McGrath-Phillips arena. The Broncos lost to Young in the city semifinals and the state supersectionals last year.

Kenwood fans turned out in droves last year and the team expects the same support this season.

“Everyone is going to be at DePaul,” Ames. “They are all waiting for us to beat Young.”
