Warm Up Your Winter with These Heated Rooftop Bars & RestaurantsAmanda Schellingon November 11, 2022 at 5:58 pm

Daylight Savings happened, the temps continue to drop, and the Bears are still bad. It’s late Fall in Chicago. While the days get shorter, it doesn’t quite mean that we’re ready to give up our weekend social life, because we’re well aware that’ll probably come early January. Even though we’ve (thankfully) moved past the pandemic, some key things we’ve implemented as staples in the city’s bustling nightlife: everyone loves a good heated patio or warm rooftop for the sake of staying social. We’re from Chicago, after all, and we’re ready to brave any and all of the elements to warm up with cold drinks and a great atmosphere.

IO Godfrey

127 W Huron St, Chicago, IL 60654

Perched on the fourth floor of the The Godfrey Hotel, the IO is the perfect place to stay warm while sipping on your favorite drinks. Since COVID, the IO has offered personal igloos for you and your friends to enjoy the winter weather with some shelter from the cold. The staff is incredibly friendly, the vibes are immaculate, and the IO remains to be one of the best bars in the city.

NBA Power Rankings: The Celtics can’t stop scoring — or soaring up our liston November 16, 2022 at 1:14 pm

The murkiness is clearing on the picture of legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference, while the West is increasingly mysterious.

The Milwaukee Bucks, who once were 9-0, have dropped three of their past four games, including two lopsided losses to the Atlanta Hawks.

Atlanta’s dominance of Milwaukee has allowed the reigning East champion Boston Celtics to jump into the top seed in the midst of a seven-game win streak.

The Celtics will have to defend their streak and top seed against the Hawks in Wednesday’s tilt (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN).

Meanwhile, the Portland Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz have come back to earth a bit after shattering expectations through the first few weeks, but they still stand atop the Western Conference alongside the Denver Nuggets. The West still doesn’t have any clearly defined favorites, and plenty of other fringe contenders could get into the conversation with a win streak.

Let’s see where all 30 teams check in this week.

Note: Throughout the regular season, our panel (Kendra Andrews, Tim Bontemps, Jamal Collier, Nick Friedell, Andrew Lopez, Tim MacMahon, Dave McMenamin and Ohm Youngmisuk) is ranking all 30 teams from top to bottom, taking stock of which teams are playing the best basketball now and which teams are looking most like title contenders.

Previous rankings: Week 1 Week 4

ESPN

1. Boston Celtics2022-23 record: 11-3Previous ranking: 4

It’s now seven wins in a row for the NBA-best Celtics. Even more impressive than the hot start under coach Joe Mazzulla is the fact that Boston has the NBA’s best offense by a massive amount. The gap between the Celtics in first and the Kings in second is nearly as large as between Sacramento and No. 6 Utah. — Bontemps

2. Milwaukee Bucks2022-23 record: 10-3Previous ranking: 1

The Bucks’ rotation has been hit hard by recent injuries. In Monday’s loss to the Hawks, Milwaukee was without Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday and Pat Connaughton, then Grayson Allen and Wesley Matthews left the game injured. With so many top players sidelined, Milwaukee has dropped to 23rd in offensive efficiency.

— Collier

3. Denver Nuggets2022-23 record: 9-4Previous ranking: 6

WednesdayCeltics-Hawks, 7:30 p.m.Warriors-Suns, 10 p.m.

FridayBucks-76ers, 7:30 p.m.Knicks-Warriors, 10 p.m.

*All times Eastern

Heading into the season, Nuggets coach Michael Malone expressed his desire for the team to excel on defense. But five weeks in, the Nuggets have the eighth-worst defense in the league, and they allowed the Celtics to score 131 points on Friday.

— Andrews

4. Portland Trail Blazers2022-23 record: 10-4Previous ranking: 8

The Blazers have won four out of five games, and Jerami Grant is rolling. He is averaging 25.4 points this month, including 37 in a loss to Dallas, and has scored 23 or more points in four straight outings. The Blazers will play the Nets and Jazz at home before measuring themselves on the road versus Milwaukee, Cleveland, New York and Brooklyn. — Youngmisuk

5. Memphis Grizzlies2022-23 record: 9-6Previous ranking: 7

The Grizzlies will have to wait a while before they have their full starting five available. Desmond Bane went down with a Grade 2 sprain of his right big toe just as Jaren Jackson Jr. was ready after recovering from offseason surgery to repair his broken right foot. Jackson looked rusty in his season debut, scoring seven points on 3-of-14 shooting. — MacMahon

6. Phoenix Suns2022-23 record: 8-5Previous ranking: 3

The Suns have lost four of six after starting 6-1. Chris Paul has been out the past three games with a heel injury. His absence allowed an opportunity for Duane Washington Jr. to fill it up with 21 points (including a 5 for 8 mark from 3) and four assists against the Heat.

— McMenamin

7. Cleveland Cavaliers2022-23 record: 8-5Previous ranking: 2

The Cavs have followed up their eight-game winning streak with a four-game losing skid. All of the defeats have been by seven points or fewer, including a 129-124 defeat to Minnesota after Darius Garland scored 51 points. So it’s not like Cleveland fell off a cliff, but it doesn’t get any easier, with two games against Miami plus Atlanta and Portland in the next six contests.

— McMenamin

8. Atlanta Hawks2022-23 record: 9-5Previous ranking: 10

The Bucks have lost three games this season, and the Hawks have accounted for two of them. On Tuesday night, Atlanta defeated the Bucks 121-106 in Milwaukee, handing them their first home loss of the season. Trae Young and Dejounte Murray combined for 40 points — their third-lowest output of the season — but Atlanta came away with the victory. Earlier in the week in a win against Philadelphia, the duo combined for 36 points, which was the second fewest they scored together. The Hawks are learning to pull out games without their star guards needing to put up 25 apiece per outing. — Lopez

9. Utah Jazz2022-23 record: 10-6Previous ranking: 5

The Jazz have lost three in a row, matching Utah’s loss total in its first 13 games. Utah’s guard trio — Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson and Collin Sexton — is in the midst of a mini-slump. They have combined to average only 28.7 points on 30.3% shooting (25% from 3-point range) during the losing streak. — MacMahon

10. Dallas Mavericks2022-23 record: 8-5Previous ranking: 9

Reggie Bullock was in a 3 of 25 funk from 3-point range before making four 3s in the fourth quarter Tuesday night to help the Mavs hold off a Clippers comeback bid. “I was so happy for him,” Luka Doncic said. “A lot of people put a lot of pressure on Reggie, talk about he can’t make a shot. But the things he does on the court for us don’t show up in the statistics a lot.” — MacMahon

11. Philadelphia 76ers2022-23 record: 7-7Previous ranking: 14

A week ago, it was unclear where Philadelphia was headed. Today, the 76ers are in a much better place. Why? Because the version of Joel Embiid who was an MVP contender each of the past two seasons has returned. An iconic 59-point performance on Sunday against Utah saw him score 26 of his team’s 27 points in the fourth quarter to give the Sixers a third win in four games. — Bontemps

12. LA Clippers2022-23 record: 8-7Previous ranking: 13

The Clippers almost pulled off another ridiculous comeback from down 25 but ran out of magic in Dallas. Despite their schedule being jam-packed with games — they’ve played four back-to-backs already — the Clippers are competing and playing loose. Despite Bradley Beal going into the league’s health and safety protocols, the Wizards won four straight games, including quality decisions over the Mavs, Jazz and Grizzlies. Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma stepped up and led the Wizards in scoring and/or rebounding during the streak, and Washington made 19 3s in the triumph over Memphis. — Youngmisuk

14. Toronto Raptors2022-23 record: 8-7Previous ranking: 11

Toronto is dealing with an injury crisis, but it still managed to finally get a win against former Raptors coach Dwane Casey and the Pistons on Monday behind a career-high 27 points from Dalano Banton. Until Pascal Siakam & Co. get back on the court, it’s going to be a bit of an adventure for Toronto to stay in the thick of a competitive Eastern Conference playoff picture. — Bontemps

15. New Orleans Pelicans2022-23 record: 8-6Previous ranking: 12

In Saturday’s win against the Rockets, Zion Williamson finished with 26 points on 8-of-9 shooting. That’s the most points any player has had this season on fewer than 10 shots in a game, and it’s the most Williamson has had in his career on fewer than 10 shots. It also was Williamson’s fourth game of his career with at least 25 points while shooting 85% from the field. All other players in Pelicans history have combined for five such games, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. (Bobby Jackson, Emeka Okafor, Robin Lopez, Anthony Davis and Julius Randle each have one.) — Lopez

16. Miami Heat2022-23 record: 7-7Previous ranking: 20

Miami has won three straight and seems to be getting back on track, thanks in part to the solid play of Bam Adebayo, who registered 54 points, 25 rebounds and five assists over his past two outings. Adebayo is averaging 19.1 points and 9.1 rebounds this season.

17. Golden State Warriors2022-23 record: 6-8Previous ranking: 15

The Warriors posted their biggest win of the season (by scoring margin) against the Spurs. More importantly, it was their most complete performance on both ends of the floor for close to 48 minutes. Still, the Warriors are winless on the road — the first time a defending champion has gone 0-7 in away games at any point in a season since the Mavericks in 2011-12.

18. Sacramento Kings2022-23 record: 7-6Previous ranking: 26

The Kings went 4-0 last week and have won seven of their past nine games. During this stretch, the Kings haven’t just been beating weaker opponents; they have tallied wins over teams that are either at the top of their conferences or expected to be. Sacramento fans should be feeling good, but the remaining area of concern is its bottom-five defense. — McMenamin

19. New York Knicks2022-23 record: 7-7Previous ranking: 18

After being routed by Brooklyn last week and giving up 145 points to Oklahoma City on Sunday, the Knicks desperately needed the victory they notched in Utah on Tuesday night to kick off a five-game trip. That’s especially true considering the next three opponents on the schedule: Denver, Golden State and Phoenix. For now, New York is back to .500. — Bontemps

Tyrese Haliburton, who leads the NBA with 10.3 assists per game, is expected to play Wednesday despite spraining his right ankle in Indiana’s most recent victory. He also is averaging 20.5 points to help lead Indiana’s offense to rank seventh in offensive efficiency this season.

The Timberwolves are struggling. Their loss to the Suns was their second straight home game in which they trailed by 25 or more points. Minnesota has dropped from ninth to 19th in defense in just five games.

22. Brooklyn Nets2022-23 record: 6-9Previous ranking: 22

The Nets have dropped two straight after winning four of five. In Tuesday’s loss to the Kings, Sacramento shot 59.6% from the floor and played harder than a Brooklyn team that finishes up a West Coast swing on Thursday in Portland. The only good sign for the Nets is that Ben Simmons played his best game of the young season on Tuesday, scoring 11 points and grabbing five rebounds. — Friedell

23. Chicago Bulls2022-23 record: 6-8Previous ranking: 16

The Bulls have lost four out of their past five contests. On one hand, they can take solace in the fact that they’ve played the second-toughest schedule in the NBA this season; on the other hand, their offense is struggling, ranking 22nd in points per 100 possessions.

On Sunday at the Knicks, Josh Giddey had 24 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to become just the third player in NBA history to record triple-doubles in each of his first two career road games versus a single opponent, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The other two? Luka Doncic and Oscar Robertson. — Lopez

25. San Antonio Spurs2022-23 record: 6-9Previous ranking: 21

After a 5-2 start, the Spurs came crashing back down to many preseason expectations with a five-game losing streak. However, they did snap that skid with an 18-point win over Milwaukee. Keldon Johnson has continued his strong start by scoring at least 15 points in each of his 14 games this season. That’s the longest such streak by a Spur since Kawhi Leonard had 17 consecutive games of at least 15 points or more in 2015-16. — Lopez

26. Charlotte Hornets2022-23 record: 4-11Previous ranking: 25

Charlotte snapped an eight-game losing streak with a win over the Magic on Monday night, but the better news is that LaMelo Ball is actually back on the floor after missing the beginning of the season with an ankle injury. Ball has 15 assists over his first two games — but with seven turnovers.

Jonathan Toews is dominating in this particular hockey departmentVincent Pariseon November 16, 2022 at 12:00 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks are not a great hockey team. They got off to a hot start with a nice winning streak but they are now starting to come back down to earth and play the way that their roster suggests that they should.

One player having an incredibly nice bounce-back year, however, is the captain Jonathan Toews. He was making his return from a serious health issue last season and never was really able to get going. Now, he is healthy and playing great.

There are a lot of stats to look at that suggest that Toews is playing very well. He leads the Blackhawks with seven goals and has an additional three assists for ten points. Those ten points tie him with Max Domi for the second most on the team (they trail Patrick Kane who has 12).

One stat that people might not realize is incredible for Toews right now is the faceoff win percentage. Toews leads the National Hockey League going into Wednesday with a remarkable 64.29 percent.

Jonathan Toews is having a really good year so far for the Chicago Blackhawks.

He is just ahead of some really great centers like Ryan Johansen, Patrice Bergeron, and Chandler Stephenson. All of these guys may rotate who is leading the league on any particular night but Toews should be right in the mix all season long.

This isn’t the end-all-be-all stat but it is nice to start a play with the puck if you can. There are some analytics that suggests that winning faceoffs is a bit overrated because the good teams find the puck anyway but it is easier to produce if you begin with possession.

The Blackhawks don’t have anyone even close to Toews in this department so it is really important that they have a guy like this. When they are up one or down one late in the game, they can throw Toews out there for a big draw and be confident in him to get it done.

Jonathan Toews might also be increasing his trade value by being so dominant in the faceoff dot in addition to his awesome goal-scoring.

A Stanley Cup contender that is looking for someone to come in and win some draws for them as a depth center might seriously consider making a trade for the Chicago captain. There are other things to work out like his salary retention and a return package but it could happen.

You never know how this season is going to end up going but Toews is certainly having a great year up to this point. Winning a majority of his faceoffs (and leading the league in that department) is really helping his game.

High school basketball: Experienced, deep Simeon edges out nationally-ranked St. Rita for preseason No. 1 spot

Simeon senior Jalen Griffith is a grizzled Public League veteran. He’s been on varsity since he was a freshman, which is fairly rare for the Wolverines these days. It’s a sign of just how much Simeon coach Robert Smith has always trusted the undersized guard.

Over the past three years Griffith teamed with guards Jaylen Drane and Aviyon Morris to win city and holiday tournaments and advance to state.

He’s experienced the ups and downs of several talented teams and likes what he sees so far from this year’s Simeon squad.

“We just have to continue building chemistry,” Griffith said. “We have to keep working on and off the court to come together.”

The Wolverines are the Sun-Times’ preseason No. 1 team, so there won’t be too much time to iron the chemistry. Simeon will be heavy favorites in its first two games of the season against Thornwood and Phillips but then faces No. 2 St. Rita in the Chicago Elite Classic.

Joining Griffith in the backcourt are two transfers: Sam Lewis from Oak Park and Kaiden Space from St. Rita. Lewis signed with Toledo last week, Space with Stony Brook.

“Sam will definitely be a scorer,” Wolverines coach Robert Smith said. “Kaiden brings leadership. He’s the type of kid that takes charges in spring basketball. You usually don’t see that.”

Having three future college guards is the dream scenario for any high school coach, but Simeon is No. 1 for another reason: the 6-9 Rubin twins.

Miles, a Loyola recruit, and Wes, a Northern Iowa recruit, were standouts last season but by all accounts they’ve both taken things to another level as seniors.

“They are just really improved,” Smith said. “Miles is shooting the ball well from the perimeter.”

Griffith agrees.

“You can see how they’ve been working,” Griffith said. “And the chemistry they have is crazy.”

There were several flashes of that chemistry last season. Some of Wes Rubin’s passes in the post to Miles were jaw-droppers.

“This year for me it is about mentality as much as skill,” Wes Rubin said. “Once you gain confidence I don’t think anyone can really stop you. That’s the main thing that has changed and grown for me.”

Simeon’s bench is strong as well. Senior Steve Turner has slimmed down and grown to 6-9. Lorenzo Shields is one of the area’s top sophomores and senior Michael Ratliff is a game-changing hustler.

“We have some juniors that are going to be good too,” Smith said. “It’s a real luxury to have the seniors to hold it down until they are ready for the limelight.”

St. Rita has a higher national profile than Simeon. The Mustangs are listed in several national preseason rankings.

Space believes his old team will be successful, but thinks experience will give his new squad the edge.

“[St. Rita] has a lot of younger guys and will need some time for the new guys to learn their spots and roles,” Space said. “There’s so much maturity here. It’s a lot more intense and competitive in practice. We have all the pieces to be the best team in the state.”

High school basketball: Simeon coach Robert Smith prepares for his final season

Simeon coach Robert Smith announced his retirement from coaching back in May, so he’s had some time to prepare for the emotions that will likely crop up over the next few months.

“Certain games and places are definitely going to be more emotional than others,” Smith said. “I really want it to be about the kids and not about me. That’s how it has always been.”

Smith, 50, is closing in on 500 wins and has won six state titles and seven city titles, both records. He’s 480-92 heading into his final season.

“Right now it feels like I’m done,” Smith said. “There is nothing else I can accomplish at this level. Especially in Illinois because you can’t play for a national championship. What else would I be able to do? I wanted to make sure I left on my own terms.”

Smith’s first game as the Wolverines’ head coach was Derrick Rose’s highly-anticipated debut. Almost no one paid any attention to the rookie head coach. Smith’s Rose-led teams won back-to-back Class AA state titles in 2006 and 2007.

Jabari Parker and Kendrick Nunn spearheaded Smith’s teams that won four consecutive Class 4A state championships from 2010 to 2013.

The Wolverines headed to Champaign as heavy favorites to win the Class 3A state title last season but lost to Metamora in the semifinals.

Simeon had an eight-point lead with just five minutes to play.

“Down the stretch I got outcoached,” Smith said. “[Metamora coach Danny Grieves] did a great job. We switched from a zone defense to man and they exploited that.”

Smith said senior guard Aviyon Morris urged him to stick with the zone defense during a timeout.

“If I had listened to him we probably win that game,” Smith said. “Those are the things you think about as a coach. Sometimes you have to listen to the guys that are out there playing.”

Sun-Times file photo

Smith’s humbleness and openness kept him relatable to kids over the years. Early on as head coach he slowly relaxed Simeon’s strict ban on players talking to the media.

Smith played for Bob Hambric at Simeon and was a longtime assistant coach under Hambric. That tradition will continue. Tim Flowers, a current assistant coach for the Wolverines, will take over as coach next season.

Flowers was Rose’s running mate on the two state championship teams.

“[Flowers] is a great leader,” Simeon senior Wes Rubin said. “That transition is going to go really well. Tim is tough on us because he wants to see us do well. And he can get out there and practice with us. He’s still tough to guard.”

Smith’s next move is to focus on fatherhood. Both of his children are talented basketball players.

“I kind of got a feel for retirement this spring and summer,” Smith said. “I didn’t spend much time with the team. I was driving my kids to practices and traveling around to watch their games.”

Biden says it’s unlikely that missile that struck Poland was fired from Russia

A Russian-made missile crossed into Poland on Tuesday, killing two people in an explosion marked as the first Russian strike to ever come down on NATO territory, the Associated Press reported.

Following an attack on Ukraine that caused widespread blackouts, the AP cited a senior U.S. intelligence official, attributing the missile strike in Poland to poor Russian guidance technology.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia fired at least 85 missiles, most of them aimed at Ukraine’s power facilities.

Zelenskyy told the AP that the stray missile was proof that “terror is not limited by our state borders.”

The Ukrainian president further warned that more strikes were imminent and urged people to seek shelter.

Despite Polish government officials confirming the Russian missile strike, the Russian Defense Ministry denied being behind any attacks near the Ukrainian-Polish border, the AP said.

After hearing about the strike, President Joe Biden, in Bali for the Group of 20 Summit, called for an emergency meeting of the Group of Seven and NATO leaders Wednesday morning, the AP said.

Biden then took to Twitter to express his “deep condolences” for the death of two Polish citizens.

He offered “full support for Poland’s investigation of the explosion,” and reaffirmed the United States’ “ironclad commitment to NATO.”

Bogdan Pukszta, executive director of the Polish American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago, said he was appalled but not shocked to hear the news of the strike.

“You can expect anything from” Russia, Pukszta said.

“We’re just hoping that both Poland and NATO are prepared to respond to something like this.”
