Bears QB Fields (shoulder) listed as questionableon November 25, 2022 at 8:34 pm

CHICAGOBears quarterback Justin Fields is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Fields said he is dealing with a separated shoulder with partially torn ligaments, calling it “basically an AC joint” injury after he landed out of bounds on his left, non-throwing shoulder upon being tackled on the Bears final drive in a loss to Atlanta. He was limited in practice on Thursday and Friday.

Coach Matt Eberflus said the determination on whether Fields plays will be a game-time decision.

“I think we’re going to let it go up to the game,” Eberflus said. “We’ll try to do that. We think that’s where it is and we’ll see where he is at game time and see how he feels.”

Eberflus said Fields is feeling better “every single day,” but the decision to play the 23-year-old quarterback will be a “three-pronged effect.” Fields would first need to be cleared to play by the Bears medical staff, then the quarterback would need to “feel really good about his performance.” Finally, Chicago coaches would take their assessment of Fields during the week at practice, according to Eberflus, to make a decision about his status.

“He’s able to do a lot of things, so we’re getting him in there with what he can do and he’s been doing good in there,” Eberflus said.

The Bears will start back-up quarterback Trevor Siemian against the Jets if Fields is unable to play. Eberflus does not view the ambiguity as the need for two separate game plans based on which quarterback will start.

“You do have to have plays that are for Justin and the ones were designed and are designed, then you have to have ones that are designed for the back-up at that position, for sure. But it’s not a huge range. Obviously, our offense is our offense and there’s certain things that Justin does and we’ve added since the bye week, the mini-bye. It will just be our offense.”

Chicago is 3-8 and in the midst of a four-game losing streak. While questions of weighing the benefit of sitting Fields so his shoulder can heal versus playing the quarterback at not full health have been raised, Eberflus said he did not believe the decision surrounding the QB would be different if the Bears were in the hunt for the playoffs.

“My preference is (for him) to play if he’s 100 percent ready to play,” Eberflus said. “That’s my preference.

Chicago Bulls at Oklahoma City Thunder: 1 Best Bet

The Chicago Bulls travel to Oklahoma City following two massive wins over the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls stand as betting favorites against the Thunder tonight.

After a brutal and downright embarrassing stretch, the Chicago Bulls have found a huge boost of confidence after taking down arguably the two best teams in the NBA in consecutive games. Tonight will bring a different test, and despite the two huge wins, this Bulls team will be tested against a tough and scrappy Thunder team led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

If you haven’t been paying attention to this team, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been absolutely unreal. After a nice progression to start his career, in year five, SGA is in the early stages of a no-doubt All-Star season, currently averaging 31.1 points per game, third in the league behind only Luka Doncic and Steph Curry.

The injury report for tonight’s game is still to be determined, but as of this afternoon, Goran Dragic remains doubtful for tonight’s game.

Another absence for Dragic could open the door for more minutes for Coby White, who in addition to hitting maybe the two biggest shots of the season for the Chicago Bulls, also was seen diving for loose balls on numerous occasions  Wednesday night. I still maintain my skepticism with his role on this team, but if that is the effort we begin to see on a nightly basis, I am happy to change my tune on Coby White.

If you followed along on Wednesday night, you know how lucky we were with the 0.2 seconds remaining early Christmas present that was given to us in the form of two meaningless free throws to cash Patrick Williams point total over for the second consecutive night. I like Williams’ chances again tonight, but will switch things up for today’s play, as I feel there is a better matchup to exploit.

Let’s keep the winners coming and get this back safely into the green! Best of luck tonight, see some red, and GO BULLS!!

2022 Bulls Best Bet Record: 9-9 (2W Streak)

Nikola Vucevic Over 16.5 Points (Sportsbook odds May Vary)

I don’t often grab the big man and his props, but I think tonight’s game is a fantastic matchup for Nikola Vucevic to score in multiple phases. After the nail-in-the-coffin three on Wednesday night, I think Vooch is in line for a big night against a team that has not shown much physicality in the paint.

On one hand, you might feel strongly that a few players in this Chicago Bulls lineup could go over their point total, as these Thunder games are high scoring and entering tonight, rank 29th in the league in points allowed per game. The game total for this evening is currently 232.5.

In Vucevic’s case, I think he could be really effective both in the paint and potentially from behind the arc. I don’t necessarily expect his three point chances to match Wednesday night’s as he finished 4-10, an attempt number that falls in line with his typical output against Milwaukee, certainly on the high end for attempts. I do think there is a real chance that he will have some opportunities as last year’s performances against the Thunder saw Vooch attempt seven and four three-point in the two games played in 2021-22.

In those two games from last season, Vooch had two of his better night’s of the season, scoring 26 and 31 in the two contests. I think we could see a similar output, and more importantly than the three-point opportunities tonight, I think Vooch could have a huge night inside the paint. OKC ranks 27th in the NBA in points in the paint allowed per game, presumably offering Vooch a chance for a huge night against a front-court lineup that does have some height to them, but not much physicality.

As for the Bulls’ chances themselves, these last two games will certainly give us some confidence and expectation that this should be a win for Chicago, but if OKC comes out firing and SGA is able to score at a high-level, this could be a really tough test for the Bulls. I’ll lay out some trends, positive and negative for each side to give you a picture of what to expect tonight.

Bulls are 5-2-1 ATS their last 8 games following a SU win.Bulls are 7-16-1 their last 24 on one day of rest.Bulls are 1-6-1 their last 8 Friday games.Bulls are 1-3-1 their last 5 meetings in OKC.

Tread lightly on the Chicago Bulls tonight, as this will certainly be a tough test for this team. Expect a nice night from Vooch and hope that the Bulls can hold SGA under 25 points. Let’s see some red tonight, best of luck and GO BULLS!!

Bears QB Justin Fields limited in practice, questionable Sunday vs. Jets

Matt Eberflus will cling to this mystery as long as he can.

In the hopes of keeping the Jets guessing about their starting quarterback for Sunday, the Bears didn’t give any clues as to whether it’ll be Justin Fields or Trevor Siemian. Eberflus said he didn’t know and that it will be a game-time decision, but it’s much more likely he’s merely maintaining secrecy.

“Justin’s status is the same… He’s able to do a lot of things,” he said. “He’s been doing good in there.”

Eberflus has been insistent all season that this gives the Bears a competitive advantage, though they’re still sitting near the bottom of the NFL at 3-8 so it’s unclear exactly what has been gained by it.

Fields hurt his left (non-throwing) shoulder near the end of the Falcons game and has been limited in practice all week. The Bears are listing him as questionable, the murkiest of game status designations. If he’s out, Siemian would make his first start of the season and the Bears would promote Nathan Peterman from the practice squad as backup.

Now that Fields has established himself as the best running quarterback in the NFL and the Bears have structured their offense to maximize that ability, switching to Siemian — he had ran for a career-high 23 yards in a 2016 game — would cut the playbook down considerably.

Fields seemed optimistic about playing despite the separated shoulder causing him pain every time he threw or handed the ball off. He also said it was impossible to predict what hits he might take or how painful it would be. He planned to get a painkiller shot Sunday morning.

The Bears must accept that this is part of the deal when a team builds around a dual-threat quarterback. While the rules are geared toward protecting them, Fields is still going to take hits like the one from Dee Alford that caused him to land on his shoulder.

He missed time last season, too, when he suffered cracked ribs in Week 10 against the Ravens. He left that game in the third quarter and missed the next two. He also hurt his ankle in Week 14 and missed two more games before sitting out the finale with coronavirus.

Fields has completed 59.6% of his passes, averaged 149.3 yards passing per game and thrown for 13 touchdowns against eight interceptions for an 86.2 passer rating. He also has rushed for a team-high 834 yards and seven touchdowns.

Special Interest infuse punk and disco with hard-hitting social themes

New Orleans punk band Special Interest have been blowing wigs back since 2018, when they dropped their debut record, Spiraling, a chaotic romp through hard-hitting social themes and wildly divergent musical directions. On “Young, Gifted, Black, in Leather” the sentiment is self-explanatory, yet the mighty wails of vocalist Alli Logout peel back new layers of meaning in an iconic ode to Blackness, wrapping a sample from a vintage Nina Simone interview in modern sounds, kink, and a fury born of oppression.

Special Interest’s tunes are sometimes punk, sometimes industrial, sometimes glam, and always so endearingly rough around the edges that you don’t mind them pushing you around. Their new record, Endure (Rough Trade), shines free of rules or boxes; it’s quintessentially punk, though you can turn a corner and find yourself in the middle of a thumping disco set with electronic dance beats smacking you upside the head. Their lineup also includes synth and drum-machine player Ruth Mascelli, bassist Nathan Cassiani, and guitarist Maria Elena, whose fusion results in tunes that feel simultaneously stripped-down and full. Logout’s lyrics overflow with socioeconomic angst, let-your-hair-down debauchery, alienation, and rage—and hit all points in between. Endure is scornful, horny, and pulsating in its acceptance of and resistance to our fates, whatever they may be. “Midnight Legend,” which features rapper Mykki Blanco, is a delightful surprise and a bouncy good time. With Special Interest, you can always expect the unexpected, but you’d better believe they’re doing it for them—it’s a treat that we get to witness them kick ass.

The Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions might own the NFC North soonVincent Pariseon November 25, 2022 at 5:30 pm

Thanksgiving has come and gone in the United States. It is always a big day for the National Football League as there are three standalone games for everyone to enjoy. Chicago Bears fans might be noticing something that is going on in the NFC North right now.

Two of the four teams in the division were in action on Thanksgiving. The Detroit Lions hosted the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field in the first game of the afternoon. Following the Dallas Cowboys beat down of the New York Giants, the Minnesota Vikings hosted the New England Patriots.

In that first game involving the Lions, there were some shocking results. The Bills, who are widely considered to be one of the best teams in the NFL, needed overtime to beat the Lions who are one of the league’s bottom feeders and have been for a while.

In the nightcap, the Vikings took care of the New England Patriots and are now 9-2. This is a very interesting time in the division as the Vikings are clearly the best team in the group. They will win it with ease.

The Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions might be ready to own the NFC North soon.

The Green Bay Packers, although they still have Aaron Rodgers for now, are really starting to fall off a cliff. They might be headed in a new direction in relatively short order.

With that in mind, it is hard to see the Minnesota Vikings keep up this level of play far beyond the 2022 season. Their defense is not very good and they rely a lot on their offense. How long can Kirk Cousins keep this up?

That leaves both the Lions and Bears who are both trying to ascend. The Lions are still looking for their long-term quarterback (it is probably not Jared Goff) but they have a lot of other nice young pieces in play that are starting to show that they play smart and hard.

As for the Bears, they are starting to see that Justin Fields is a star that can make big plays. It might not be long before these two teams are the ones running the division. It should be a lot of fun to watch.

This CFB Playoff scenario would be annoying for Notre Dame fansVincent Pariseon November 25, 2022 at 3:56 pm

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team have had a very interesting 2022 season. They were 3-3 after going 0-2 to start which made it obvious that this year wasn’t going to end in the College Football Playoff. However, they have won five straight and are looking for a strong finish.

They have their rivalry game against USC on Saturday which is a great test to end the regular season. They already shook up the landscape of the College Football Playoff a few weeks ago when they defeated Clemson and now they are trying to do that to USC.

Unfortunately, there is a new story developing that might really annoy Notre Dame fans. As of the most recent College Football Playoff ranking, LSU is ranked at number five which is just outside the four that would play in the tournament. They only trail Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, and TCU for the top spots.

Of course, this would annoy Notre Dame fans because of the fact that Brian Kelly is their head coach. He surprisingly left Notre Dame ahead of their bowl game last season to join LSU. It was a wild move that left a sour taste in a lot of people’s mouths.

Notre Dame fans wouldn’t be happy with this potential CFB playoff scenario.

LSU is one spot ahead of USC which is Notre Dame’s next opponent. This is notable because the Tigers have two losses as opposed to USC’s one loss.

On Saturday, LSU hosts Texas A&M which should be a win for them. The problem is that Michigan plays Ohio State as well so one of them is going to drop out. That will bump LSU into a playoff spot by the time the rankings come out.

The good news is that LSU will then play Georgia in the SEC Championship game the following week. There will be a lot of Notre Dame people rooting for Georgia to beat LSU so that they can be eliminated from making the playoff.

Brian Kelly is an outstanding recruiter and coach so you know that they are only going to get better but Notre Dame fans are never going to enjoy it. It will surely be interesting to see how it all plays out.

The Gilgamanians and Maku Sica celebrate new records from distant points on the spectrum of improvisation

The Gilgamanians and Maku Sica (formerly Mako Sica) sound profoundly different from each other, but these two local ensembles share a commitment to using improvisation to tap into ideas they would never find any other way. The Gilgamanians are percussionist Michael Zerang and shortwave-radio operator Don Meckley. This is the duo’s first concert, but their history stretches back 40 years. In the early 1980s, they enlisted Daniel Scanlan, who played guitar, violin, and cornet, to found the electroacoustic improv group Liof Munimula. Their concerts were as legendary for the bristling abstraction of their music as they were for their vast and improbable array of equipment—in Meckley’s case that included one-of-a-kind inventions such as the radiotar (a shortwave radio tuned with a hinged guitar neck) and the hydro-kalimba (a row of cords or pipes that dripped water onto “keys” cut into a miked cafeteria tray) as well as a 40-foot antenna that enabled him to tap into a world’s worth of broadcast sounds. Liof Munimula disbanded in 1997, but Meckley and Zerang reunited after learning that Scanlan had died in 2018 in a Florida nursing home. While the Gilgamanians’ current setup is decidedly more portable than that of their earlier ensemble, the fluctuating mixtures of vibrations, textures, and caught-and-released sounds on their debut CD, this year’s Escape From Dark Matter (Pink Palace), are as hallucinatory as anything they did back in the day.

Singer, bassist, and guitarist Brent Fuscaldo and trumpeter, mandolinist, and guitarist Przemyslaw Krys Drazek first convened as Mako Sica in 2007. Third members have come and gone, and in recent years they’ve initiated an open-door policy that has dramatically diversified their sound. Beginning with their 2018 double LP, Ronda (Astral Spirits/Feeding Tube), made with master percussionist Hamid Drake, they’ve invited eminences from the worlds of free jazz and experimental music to join them in improvising unspooling grooves and eerily atmospheric melodies. At this show violinist Mark Feldman, drummer George Marich, and Cheer-Accident bandleader and multi-instrumentalist Thymme Jones will join them to celebrate the release of their new CD, Formless (Feeding Tube). This is also the first time they’ve played out since changing their name from “Mako Sica” (the Lakota term for the South Dakota Badlands) to “Maku Sica,” which Fuscaldo says is intended to show respect for the people to whom the original name belongs.
