Weird-rock trio Michael Columbia reunite after a 12-year hiatus

Michael Columbia in 2008: Dylan Ryan, Chris Kalis, and Dave McDonnell Credit: Jeremiah Chiu

Sixteen years ago, Michael Columbia were one of Chicago’s most compelling bands, combining smooth jazz, twitchy progressive rock, the occasional wacky time signature, and sometimes even a pop-adjacent melody. Dave McDonnell (saxophone, keyboards, bass, vocals) and Dylan Ryan (drums) were cozy with several groups linked to local label Obey Your Brain and South Loop recording studio Shape Shoppe, including Icy Demons and Bablicon—and all of them enriched the world’s weirdo-rock quotient. Chris Kalis (guitar, synthesizers), who’d cofounded Chandeliers in 2005, joined the duo of McDonnell and Ryan the following year—after the recording of Stay Hard, to date the final Michael Columbia release. The band played the Pitchfork Music Festival in 2009 and broke up that summer, when McDonnell left town for Cincinnati (he now lives in Philadelphia) and Ryan split for Los Angeles. For a while they continued working together remotely, but that tailed off in 2010. After a 12-year hiatus, though, Michael Columbia are back. “The band will be recording at Jamdek studios and finishing a record of material that has been on the shelves for over a decade,” Kalis says. They’ll also reunite for a show at Co-Prosperity on Saturday, December 3, which will be livestreamed on Lumpen.TV; Oui Ennui headlines, and Courtesy and Chelsea Bridge open. Welcome back, fellas!

Michael Columbia are rerecording this track for their upcoming album.

This Michael Columbia track, which appeared posthumously on a 2011 compilation, will also get redone.

In August, Gossip Wolf caught a set by local indie-rock quartet Shoulderbird at Golden Dagger, where the mellow, jazz-tinged phrasing of guitarist and vocalist Meredith Nesbitt made an immediate impression—as did her crackerjack band, which consists of guitarist Kyle Paul, bassist Miles Allen, and drummer Lily Finnegan. In November, Shoulderbird released the mini album Parade via Bandcamp, and its five songs are even better than this wolf remembered. They glisten with warm, spacious reverb and more than a touch of soulful Americana.

Guitarist and vocalist Meredith Nesbitt wrote all the material on Parade.

Local culture outlet These Days has been on this wolf’s reading list for years. Its twice-yearly feature “Chicago Artists to Watch” is always a must-read, and the fall/winter 2022 iteration came out in November. To celebrate, These Days will host two consecutive Schubas concerts featuring acts covered in this year’s two “Artists to Watch” roundups. Fingy, Godly the Ruler, and Cece Maravilla perform on Thursday, December 1; Pretty Liyah, CP, and Semiratruth hit the stage on Thursday, December 2. Tickets are $15 per night or $25 for both. The shows are 18 and up and begin at 8 PM.

Jane Addams Resource Corporation offers free training and job placement

A skilled worker in the manufacturing industry can anticipate a lifetime of financial stability in a vibrant, in-demand field. But for many, getting the necessary training and education to launch a career in the trades can be daunting, and even cost prohibitive. The folks at Jane Addams Resource Corporation know there’s no time like the present to take your career—and your life—by the reins.

Founded in 1985, as an economic development agency focused on preserving manufacturing jobs in and around the Ravenswood Industrial Corridor, Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC) has blossomed into one of Chicago’s most vital resources for unemployed and low-income workers seeking careers in the trades.

JARC operates under the guiding principles that people who work should not live in poverty, and that focusing on careers can lead to lasting, substantive change. At their three locations in Austin, Ravenswood, and Chatham, they’ve provided free job training programs for thousands of Chicagoans, empowering them to transform their lives and support their families through well-paying jobs while helping to fill a void of highly skilled workers in the U.S. manufacturing space.

As a 501c3 nonprofit, JARC is mission driven, focused on alleviating poverty in Chicago and promoting gainful paths to employment that lead to family sustaining wages. During this season of giving you can support JARC by making a contribution on 11/29 for Giving Tuesday.

Getting started on a brand-new career path with JARC’s job training program is as easy as registering for one of the weekly application sessions, which are held in person on the first Wednesday of each month, and virtually every Wednesday in between. Applicants can choose between several different programs focusing on in-demand skills, which currently include: Manufacturing Bridge Program, Fundamentals of Manufacturing, Mechanical Assembly, CNC Operating, and Welding. (Courses run anywhere from ten to 20 weeks.) Rather than a traditional classroom setting with long lectures and copious amounts of homework, JARC’s training programs simulate a manufacturing workplace environment, adhering to strict attendance and safety protocols, while prioritizing peer learning, teamwork, and leadership development through hands-on, project-based lessons.

JARC applies a holistic lens when working with students; this approach better addresses their needs beyond career training and education alone. Trainees can tap into an array of support services, such as financial education and coaching, legal aid, and help with applying for Medicaid, and other public benefits. These services are also available at no cost, and students may be eligible for further assistance, such as prepaid public transit cards to offset the cost of commuting to class or funds to help pay for costly but necessary safety gear.

As JARC students prepare to complete their programs and transition into their new professions, they can utilize the center’s resume-writing services, mock interviews, and job-placement opportunities. In fact, some students are able to find employment through JARC before they even finish their studies.

So whether you’re launching your career for the first time, seeking a change, returning to the workforce, or interested in improving your English language and math skills while learning a lucrative, exciting trade, JARC could be the place for you.

Support JARC for Giving Tuesday today. Visit JARC online at www.jane-addams.org today to learn more about its programs and sign up for a Wednesday application session

White Sox finalize coaching staff

It was known that pitching coach Ethan Katz would be back, that Charlie Montoyo would be the new bench coach and that Triple-A Charlotte hitting coach Chris Johnson would be promoted to the major league staff in some capacity.

It was also known that hitting coach Frank Menechino, assistant hitting coach Howie Clark and third base coach Joe McEwing and bench coach Miguel Cairo would not be part of new White Sox manager Pedro Grifol’s staff.

On Tuesday, the Sox filled in the blanks, naming Jose Castro hitting coach, Johnson assistant hitting coach, Eddie Rodriguez third base coach, and Mike Tosar as major league fielding coordinator.

Daryl Boston returns for his 11th season as first base coach and 26th as a coach in the organization.

Geoff Head was named senior director of sports performance.

Castro, 64, enters his first season as a major-league hitting coach after serving as the assistant hitting coach with the Atlanta Braves for the last eight years. A native of Havana, Cuba, Castro has nine years of coaching experience in the majors (2015-22 with Atlanta and 2014 with the Cubs, as quality assurance coach). He also served as the interim hitting coach with the Mariners in 2008.

Rodr?guez, 63, begins his first season as the Sox third-base coach after spending three seasons as Kansas City’s minor-league field coordinator. Among his 40 years of professional coaching experience, Rodr?guez has served as the Royals third base coach (2011-13), Seattle’s first base coach (2008), Frank Robinson’s bench coach in Montreal (2004) and Washington (2005-06), Arizona’s third base (2002-03) and first base coach (2001) and Toronto’s third base coach (1998).

Tosar, 54, spent the last three seasons as a special assignment hitting coach in the Kansas City organization.

Grifol takes over after two seasons of Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa at the helm. In La Russa’s final season, the Sox finished with a 81-81 record, most disappointing for a team that talked World Series during spring training.

Grifol, 52, spent the last 10 seasons with the Royals, including the last three as bench coach.

White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf issues statement on Jose Abreu

Moments after Jose Abreu was introduced by the Houston Astros after signing a three-year contract with the World Series champions, White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf issued a statement about the former Sox slugger who played nine seasons on the South Side.

“Jos? Abreu deservedly belongs among the roster of White Sox franchise all-time greats,” Reinsdorf said. “His determination and commitment to the game each and every day made him the consummate professional, always leading by example. It was my fervent hope that Jos? would never wear another uniform, as I told him many times throughout the years. Unfortunately, hope is not always translated into reality. While we ended up in different places in the business side of the game, Jos? and I always shared the same love of baseball.

“I am grateful to Jos? for his friendship, and the impact he made for the White Sox franchise both on the field and in the community. I want to thank him for always representing the values of the White Sox organization and the great city of Chicago — strength, hard work, pride and tenacity. His legacy is written in the White Sox record books forever.”

Abreu donned a No. 79 Astros jersey, the number he wore with the Sox, when he was introduced Tuesday.

“Being a part of this ballpark and this family is something that I am so much looking forward to, and I think that a lot of great things can happen here,” Abreu told reporters through a translator.

Abreu, the 2020 American League MVP who ranks third on the White Sox’ all-time home run list, was one of the biggest free agent names on the market even though he will be 36 next season. Astros owner Jim Crane said that Abreu was a top target and signed him to a $60 million deal.

Abreu said the Sox made him an offer but said it was not formal. He signed a six-year, $68 million deal as a Cuban free agent before the 2014 season and a three-year, $50 million deal before the 2020 season.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers: ‘I plan on playing’ vs. Bears on Sunday

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is still hurting from a rib injury, but expects to start Sunday against the Bears.

“We’re not eliminated, [and] I got good new with the scans yesterday, so I plan on playing this week,” he said Tuesday in his weekly appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.

The Bears, meanwhile, are still evaluating whether Justin Fields will be able to play through a separated non-throwing shoulder. He was out against the Jets, leaving Trevor Siemian to start, and coach Matt Eberflus said Monday his status remained in question.

Rodgers left the Packers’ 40-33 loss to the Eagles in the fourth quarter after completing 11 of 16 passes for 140 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Jordan Love replaced him and completed 6 of 9 for 113 and a touchdown.

At 4-8, the Packers sit three games out of the final NFC playoff spot with five to go. A win against the Bears would keep them on the fringe heading into their bye week.

Rodgers said his intent is to “go to one of my favorite places to play, Chicago, and hopefully get a big win, get into the bye week and get healthy.”

NFL Overreaction Tuesday, Week 12:Raiders can let Josh Jacobs walk, Ravens hit the panic button, Pickett to Pickens is going to be generational, Cardinals season is over

Overreaction: The Raiders can let Josh Jacobs walk.

The one-time NFL Pro Bowl running back is in the final year of his contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, who made this a “prove it” year for Jacobs if he wanted an extension with the Silver and Black. Amid a sad season, the Raiders Jacobs has been one of the few bright spots this year for Las Vegas. Jacobs is leading the NFL in rushing with 1159 yards and has the longest run of any running back this season with an 86-yard sprint that sealed the Raiders’ overtime win on Sunday.

Jacobs set a franchise record of 303 total yards and set a Raiders record of 229 rushing yards in Sunday’s OT thriller. Jacob’s record-setting afternoon was the best rushing performance by a Raiders running back in 25 years. The previous record holder was Napoleon Kaufman who has not played since 2,000

Jacobs is sure to have another Pro Bowl bid this year with his stellar performance and will be coveted by several teams in the offseason who are looking for a running back of his caliber. The Bills, Rams, Falcons, Ravens, and others would be in the mix as suiters for Jacobs as well as other teams looking to improve their backfield.

Not an Overreaction: Ravens need to hit the panic button

Before jumping too far off the deep end, the Ravens do not need to hit the panic button on Lamar Jackson, but the rest of the team needs a wake-up call. Trevor Lawrence carved up the Ravens’ defense like Thanksgiving turkey on the Jaguars’ final drive Sunday. Scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion and forcing the Ravens to take a 67-yard field goal to win that Justin Tucker missed as time expired. Not only was this the best drive of Lawrence’s career but it was another glaring example of the Ravens letting games slip away in the clutch.

Jackson scored a touchdown with 2:02 left on the clock and put Baltimore up 27-20. The Jaguars needed to go 75 yards with no timeouts against a Ravens defense that is number 2 in the NFL in 3rd down defense, allowing a 32.56% conversion percentage. However, Lawrence and the Jags did the improbable and made the Ravens’ defense look like swiss cheese.

This is the 4th game the Ravens have lost this season and the 3rd game where the Ravens have held the lead late and failed to hold onto it in the final minutes. This is where they need to hit the panic button and need to find a fix fast or it can end another sour ending to a promising season in Baltimore.

Not an Overreaction: The Cardinals season is over.

Arizona has been a swirl of headlines all season long and the losses are starting to pile up. Losing Hopkins for the first six games has proved to be a much larger impact on the Cardinals’ season than originally thought. Then losing Hollywood Brown to injured reserve and then losing Zach Ertz to IR as well took away Kyler Murray’s biggest weapons for most of the season.

The Cardinals are 4-8 in a division that is a runaway for the 49ers right now and the Seahawks are two games ahead of the Cardinals for second place and the playoff bubble. Even if they were to finish the season undefeated they would be 8-8, not good enough to sneak in when the entire NFC East could make the playoffs.

So who is to blame for the Cards’ lackluster season? The Cardinals had one of the tougher schedules in the NFL, but missing key offensive pieces have left them limited to focus on Murray’s ability to create with his feet more often than not to finish games. This could have led to the development of Murray’s hamstring injury.

Will Kliff Kingsbury return as head coach of the cardinals? Who will be the scapegoat for this underachieving Arizona squad that had such a promising 11-6 season a year ago where they started a blistering 7-0 to start 2021?

Not an Overreaction: Pickett to Pickens will be a generational duo for Pittsburg.

Though the Steelers are a lowly 4-7 the optimism surrounding Pittsburg’s’ young quarterback and wide receiver is enough to have fans excited for next season already. Kenny Pickett was taken with the 20th pick in the 2022 NFL draft and was the first quarterback taken in the draft and the only one to go in the first round. George Pickens was taken in the second round at pick 52 and was the 11th receiver taken at that time.

Before Pickett was made the starting in Pittsburg, Pickens struggled to produce. Averaging just 1.5 catches per game and 21 yards per game. Pickett took over the starting role from Mitchell Trubisky in week four and Pickens immediately had an impact having his best game of the season with 6 catches for 102 yards. Pickens more than doubled his first three-week averages and showed real promise as an NFL receiver. Pickens already has a highlight reel catch of the year contender and the sky is the limit as far as a ceiling for his talent.

Since his NFL debut, Pickett has had a tough time getting acclimated to the NFL in his first eight games. Pickett has won three games in his first eight starts but is dealing with a Steelers passing attack that is last in the NFL in yards per pass with an average of 5.6. Once Pickett and Pickens put together the deep ball they are going to be exciting to watch.

Recommendations for the year’s final Bandcamp Friday

The final Bandcamp Friday of the year arrives December 2. I’ve made a habit of rounding up music recommendations from recent Reader stories for each Bandcamp Friday, and since this is the 26th one, I hope it’s redundant to explain that for a 24-hour period, Bandcamp passes along its usual share of sales revenue to the independent artists and labels selling their wares on the platform.

Because the Reader covers a lot of independent artists who use Bandcamp, these Fridays have presented me with the opportunity to remind our readers of the great writing we’ve recently published. Bandcamp has yet to announce any Bandcamp Friday dates beyond this one, but if it does, I might get off the bus—that is, I don’t know if these roundups are still necessary after more than two and a half years. I can tell you about the Reader’s music coverage in plenty of other ways, and Bandcamp certainly doesn’t need my help reminding people it exists.

Without further ado, then, here’s my last Bandcamp Friday roundup of 2022, if not my last ever. My roundup for November includes a link to the previous month’s list, and you can follow that to get to all my other roundups. Happy listening!
