Non-Alcohol Beer Preview: Athletic Oktoberfest
Once again, I need to catch on a few issues that affect the atmosphere in the Beeronaut orbit.
My quest for a new computer seems to have finally come to an end, with a new Mac Mini doing my heavy lifting. Still need to equipment with the software I’ve been depending upon earlier.
In the interim, I was able to complete a video beer review using the less complex iMovie for iPad. It was an Oktoberfest, and I wanted to get this out while Oktoberfest is still current.
Also, I get some response when I look at a non-alcoholic, or a reduced-gluten beer. Perhaps because I’m happy to take on these segments.
Athletic Brewing Co. shipped me a six-pack of their Oktoberfest beer, without any prior conversation. So yes, this is a brew that was sent as a promotion.
Athletic, based in Stratford, CT, is one of the few brewers that makes only non-alcoholic beverages. Which means they can be ordered online and shipped to more locations.
Their Oktoberfest is a seasonal brew, made with recognizable seasonal ingredients like German Vienna and Munich malts, and German Hersbrucker hops.
My impression: The beer pours light gold, with just a little more substance than the usual pale lager. There’s a thin foamy head. A very light malt smell, just a tang of something metallic that seems to come from modified beers.
The taste has some malt to the front instead of sweetener. I can get a slight edge of hops. No matter how it’s made, it still has a bit of the “processed” taste of a reduced-alcohol beverage. But if you need an NA beer, this is pretty decent.
