My Friend, the Corona Virus and the Death of Ravinia
What!! WTF!! How could I say that?
Here’s how: Ravinia cancels entire 2020 summer season due to coronavirus pandemic
YES!! For the first time since 1935!!
Now, for those of you who wonder why I hate Ravinia, please peruse this past post found here.
Seriously, read it, it’s my finest work.
What this means is that I shall not have to endure all my friends and colleagues rushing up to me breathlessly shouting, “Have you seen the Ravinia schedule yet!!! My favorite band the (Band Name Here) will be at Ravinia on (Summer Date Here).
What does that mean? Allow me to translate:
On the hottest day of the year, with a threat of severe thunderstorms, large hail and tornadoes, a group of octogenarians will play songs that meant so much to you when you were 19.
You shall enjoy the tinny sound coming from the small speakers while sitting on a lawn with one trillion other people catching malaria from the mosquitos.
Who’d want to miss that?
Now, I am amazed that a world war was unable to stop the music, but my little friend Covid-19 (I call her Covey, and yes, it’s a she) was able to bring them to a screeching halt.
So, my friends, miracles do happen!
Now, let me actually address something a little more serious. The issue of the quarantine.
Like all of you, I have been slowly going quite mad sitting in my house with my wife who is also trapped.
I mean, I used to work from home all the time, but my day was more like this:
“OK, honey, I’m starting work.”
OK, I’m going to the gym and the store.”
“Bye, love you!”
“Love you!”
And then she’d be gone for about 7 or 8 hours.
I would work and then enjoy lunch and be just about ready to go to the gym when she got back.
So, we’d see each other at dinner. It was great.
Now, it’s:
“OK, honey, I’m starting work.”
“OK, but help me rearrange this furniture for no reason between your conference calls.”
Followed by:
“You’re eating NOW? You’re eating THAT?
{Sigh}
What is this quarantine accomplishing?
Well, in essence, what it is accomplishing is slowing the pace of the disease as it goes through the population, with the goal being to help prevent our health care facilities from being overwhelmed. And, it does seem to be working.
On the other hand, it will inevitably make its way through and it will claim more lives, but, we hope to be able to save some lives by avoiding settings where there is a lack of critical staff or equipment.
It’s not a great time. No one is happy, but I do sincerely think it’s the right thing to do.
So, my friends, bear with the burden of the extended quarantine, taking comfort in the knowledge that RAVINIA IS CANCELED!!
Woo Hoo!!
And if anyone tells you they really love Ravinia-STAY SKEPTICAL!!
