How to Manage Pests in the Workplace: 7 Tips
Pests aren’t just a problem for residents. If you’re not careful, bugs can enter office spaces. Once inside, they can decrease employee productivity and even damage wooden structures. Here are seven tips for keeping away unwanted critters.
1. Keep Food in Sealed Containers
Packing a lunch is a cost-effective option for many employees. However, if it’s not sealed properly, it can attract pests. Have your employees use resealable bags and containers to store their food. After lunch, employees should put any leftover food back in the boxes. Leaving food out for long periods can lead to a pest infestation. Also, make sure to clean up any spills or crumbs when you’re done eating.
2. Cover Trash Can Lids
Make sure the office trash cans are entirely covered with plastic liners. Consider using heavy-duty trash bags to prevent flies from entering. Also, before throwing away food containers, rinse them out. The cleaner they are, the more pests will stay away. Make sure to wash out the garbage can as well. Another tip is to repair any holes in the cans. In addition, take out the trash regularly.
3. Take Fruit Home With You
When rushing to leave work at the end of the day, you may forget personal items. Leftover fruit from lunch could end up sitting on your desk. If left overnight, it can leave your space vulnerable to unwanted bugs. So, be sure to bring home any leftovers from lunch or put them in the break room fridge.
4. Don’t Overwater Plants
Plants are great ways to decorate your space and create a calming vibe. However, they are easy places for pests to hide. Also, overwatering can attract gnats. Make sure to let your vegetation dry out between waterings.
5. Keep the Office Clean
When you’re busy working all day, cleaning up may seem like a lower priority. Although, a messy space can be a convenient home for unwanted critters. Store items in cabinets or bins to stay organized.
Clean up any spills immediately since sticky or sugary substances can entice flies. Create a cleaning station near the break room so employees have easy access to the supplies. Consider buying a mini USB vacuum employees can use to tidy up after lunch.
6. Stay on Top of Landscaping
Keep in mind pests come from the outside. You want to trim trees around your office building. Longer branches create bridges for bugs to enter. Another thing to remember is mulch can attract insects, so use rubber mulch instead. Pebbles or rocks are good alternatives as well. When examining your property’s landscape, remove any rotting wood or stagnant water.
7. Consider Pesticides
If you notice any warning signs of an infestation, then it may be time to use chemicals. Pesticides, such as Neem Oil, can help control your pest problem. However, you should let employees know what kinds of chemicals you’re using. Then provide them with safety sheets.
Also, advise workers to remove any items from their desks before anything is sprayed. If you’re unsure which products to use, consult a professional.
How to Keep Away Pests at Home
Due to the pandemic, many people are working remotely. So, they are also vulnerable to pest issues. Here are some tips for insect management when working from home.
1. Seal Your Doors
Properly sealed entryways can keep out both intruders and pests. Small gaps under your door can be easy entrance points for critters. Use weatherstripping and a silicone sweep to enclose any holes.
You can also use caulk to seal the joint where the door frame meets the wall. Keep in mind, it’s essential to keep your door closed for these methods to work. If you have kids running around, you may want to install a door closer.
2. Repair Cracks or Large Openings
Examine your house’s exterior to eliminate any entry points within your foundation. Look for signs of damaged or missing siding. Use mortar or cement to patch up these holes. Replace any rotting wood or trim as well. Use caulk for the smaller cracks.
When repairing the outside, remember to check your roof as well. Make sure there are no large openings in your chimney, which can attract squirrels. If you notice any signs of an infestation, don’t light any fires and try to make loud noises.
3. Add Window Screens
In summer, having open windows can let in a nice breeze. However, it can also make it easier for flies and mosquitoes to enter. Install a mesh screen for better protection. Fiberglass is a popular material choice since it doesn’t rust or stain. In addition, repair and tears in your current casements.
Controlling Pests in the Workplace
Pests can cause an inconvenience and potentially cause damage to the property. Yet, there are many preventive measures you and your employees can take. Follow these tips for a bug-free office.
