From jaunty neighborhood celebrations to weekend-long festivals to exciting nights at the ballpark, there are endless warmer weather activities that take place around the city. But this year, summer will be… different.
With Governor Pritzker extending the shelter-in-place until May 30, it’s hard to tell when the city will open up again. But one thing is for certain: people and businesses will be taking extra precautions to make sure the public is safe. Wearing masks is now required. Restaurants and gyms will limit their occupancy. And Chicago events will either be postponed or possibly canceled. Here’s a list of what’s been canceled or postponed so far, and what’s still up in the air.
Lollapalooza
Still On
Chicago’s largest music festival is on track for July 30th through August 2nd. It seems things are still up in the air — typically Lolla announces their lineup in March. Representatives from Lollapalooza have said they’ll decide by the end of May whether or not they’ll cancel the festival.
Country LakeShake 2020
Canceled
Country tunes on the lakefront won’t be happening this year. The popular music festival announced they’ll be taking a hiatus after 5 years. Guess we’ll have to save our cowboy boots for a night out at Bub City instead!
Riot Fest
Still On
Alternative kids, do not fret. The 3-day music fest is so far still going down on September 11 – 13 in Douglas Park. My Chemical Romance was announced as a headliner but the rest of the lineup is still a secret. Pick up your tickets here.
Spring Awakening
Canceled
Originally planned for June 12 – 14 in Union Park, the electronic music festival has officially been canceled for 2020. Plans to resume in 2021 are underway with reps promising, “2021 will be the best year yet.”
MLB Season
Postponed
Baseball was scheduled to kick off on March 26. However, COVID-19 brought everything to a halt. While there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the season, the league claims, “We will continue to monitor ongoing events and undertake the precautions and best practices recommended by public health experts, and urge all baseball fans to follow suit.” Explore the schedule here.
Pride Fest
Postponed
The Northalsted Business Alliance officially announced the postponement of Chicago’s proudest weekend. Pride Fest, which was slated for June 20 – 21, has been rescheduled for September 5 – 6. The love-filled celebration will still take place in Boystown with musical acts, dancing, and drag shows. Get the latest on Pride Fest here.
Taste of Chicago
Still On
Foodies, relax. Your favorite event is safe for now. Scheduled for July 8 – 12, Taste of Chicago brings together some of the city’s top chefs and local artists in Grant Park. Admission is free. You can stay up-to-date on any changes by visiting their website.
Roscoe Village Burger Fest
Postponed
Where’s the beef? The 14th annual post-Fourth of July festival has been pushed back until September 12 – 13. We’ll just have to keep dreaming of Houndstooth Saloon and Fatso’s Last Stand for a few more months.
