GM gets a New Look
Yet, another new logo for General Motors was unveiled last week. According to a spokesman. The new logo will highlight the company’s ongoing efforts to “build a fleet with zero emissions, zero crashes and zero congestion.” A big order-and promise-for sure.
This isn’t the first time General Motors has changed its logo to align with their vision of the company. Although some may remember at least 7 of the notable logos, there have been many, including one for each auto maker under the GM umbrella: Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, GMC.
An American multi-national corporation with headquarters in Detroit, as well as global headquarters. General Motors was incorporated in 1908, founded by William C. Durant as a holding company, and today markets and distributes vehicles, vehicle parts, and sells financial services. They survived a bankruptcy in 2009-saved by President Obama-and at that time, dropped the Hummer, Saturn, Pontiac and Saab Automotive brands.
GM was the first automaker to release an all-electric automobile in 1990. In 2010, they debuted the Chevrolet Volt, and in 2011, the Chevy Spark EV, and in 2016,the Chevy Bolt EV.
The new logo-not all that different-still uses GM’s initials, however, the this logo is in lower-case letters rather than upper case. The look is decidedly more modern, more befitting the 21st century. The line placed under both letters (GM) now underscores the letter “M.” It’s been said that the new letter ”M” resembles a three-pronged power plug about the be plugged into the socket! A coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not. Considering GM’s desire to park an electric vehicle in everyone’s driveway.
According to Deborah Wahl, head of marketing at GM, central to GM’s new market campaign is the ultium modular EV platform which debuts this fall in the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. The platform will be able to support up to 1,000 horsepower and a 450-mile range, will be the heart of some 30 EV’s GM will launch globally by 2025. It may also be utilized by Honda and possibly Acura, and the self-driving shuttle from Cruise
