Girlfriends’ Golden Brooks Is Living Her Quarantine Life Like Its Golden!

On September 11th the television sitcom Girlfriends celebrated their 20th anniversary with a relaunch on Netflix.
Girlfriends is an ensemble sitcom focusing on a mixed batch of black women who face life’s tests and triumphs together. From dating to divorce and friends to family to relationships, Joan, Maya, Lynn, and Toni support each other despite their differing backgrounds, learning about true friendship in the process.
When the show first aired, it changed the landscape. It gave black women a chance to see someone on TV that looked, spoke, thought, and shopped like them. 20 years later and it still resonates very strongly with audiences. The topical subject matter seems to be timeless in nature. The show has a way of touching on a sensitive subject in a serious but comedic way. Once the show came to an abrupt end in 2008, it left fans feeling incomplete and sad. There’s still a yearning for a reboot with Joan, Maya, Lynn, and Toni. However, until that happens we have to just continue to hope and enjoy watching reruns on Netflix.
For #ThrowbackThursday we decided to have one of the girlfriends, Golden Brooks, on IG LIVE to chit chat about Girlfriends.
Golden Brooks is an American actress. She began her career with starring role in the Showtime comedy series, Linc’s (1998–2000), and later has appeared in films Timecode (2000) and Impostor (2001).
From 2000 to 2008, Brooks starred as Maya Wilkes in the UPN/The CW comedy series, Girlfriends for which she received two NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series nominations. She also has appeared in films Motives (2004), Beauty Shop (2005), Something New (2006) and The Darkest Minds (2018). In 2019, Brooks received critical acclaim for her performance in the TNT limited drama series I Am the Night.
During this amazing one hour live, we talked about the show’s impact, how she’s been holding up during quarantine, new projects, and how Reggie Hayes is recovering from his recent hospital scare.
