Dry January Preview: Paulaner Weizen-Radler Non-Alcoholic
We are into some event called “Dry January.” This is apparently a promotion from various health groups, starting in Britain, to get people to detoxify after celebrating over the holiday season. Well, okay, but we have not been partying very hard these days, have we?
[embedded content]But while some brewers are going “dry” by featuring dry ciders, dry wines or beers, I have been sent an “alkoholfrei” beverage for my comment, from Paulaner Brauerei of Germany. They made up for it by sending a Doppelbock, which I’ll get to later.
The Weizen-Radler is a non-alcoholic version of their wheat beer, with added lemon flavor.
It pours a big fluffy head over a style-appropriate hazy body. The smell is lemonade more than beer. It’s also what I get in the taste. Lemon soda. There’s a bit of malt body backing up the lemon taste, giving it a bit of background character. Decent lemonade with a bit of malt. It reminds me of a malt-based soda one of the subrubs’ local distributors tried to formulate and sell, largely as an energy drink, but which tasted mostly like Mountain Dew. It came out in the 90s, just long ago enough that actual details are behind the paywalls of the few periodicals who’ve gone back that far in their online archives. Decent enough, you may like it as a lemon drink.
