Jessi’s Media Review – A Chicks Point of View!
Don’t get locked up in Joliet Haunted Prison
What’s scarier than having to go to prison? How about going to a haunted prison! Well that’s the deal with Joliet Haunted Prison in Joliet IL! Old Joliet Prison was a real prison that housed hundreds of convicts at one point in time. Now it is abandoned and infested with spirits and became the Joliet Haunted Prison!
The haunt starts out kinda lame, you are just walking through the outside of the building and wondering when anything exciting will happen. Then you actually enter the prison and all hell breaks loose! You slowly walk past the now disheveled prison housing area and peer into the empty cells that once housed some of Illinois’ worst criminals. Are they empty or is something waiting inside? Then you get past the cells and think you are safe, but you are still not out of the prison! You have to walk through the rest of the prison and avoid the rest of the unhappy inhabitants.
Like it’s sister haunt 13th Floor, Joliet Prison also has a combination of actors and animatronics. I will tell you now that nothing is scarier than walking past an old dark “empty” prison cell and having a robotic creature jump out at you! Not too many actors at this haunt either. Finally you are out of prison but your day isn’t over yet! Now you have to tread through a maze full of an evil scientists’ failed experiments. Fortunately you are armed with a laser gun to take them out! I loved this attraction because it’s basically laser tag against deadly creatures both real (actors) and dummies equipped with laser collars that can shoot back at you. I also liked how the actors really played off being shot and falling to the ground dead.
When the haunts are over, you are led back to the front where there is a food stand and gift shop, as well as a mini escape room! Me and my buddy Angie tried it and failed miserably but it was only $5 at least.
So I have to say that I really enjoyed Joliet Haunted Prison! It was really different and fun to walk through an actual -but no longer used – prison and not just one made up from set pieces. It really gave you a terrifying experience because you just don’t know if someone or something is gonna pull you inside one of those “empty” cells! And the laser tag was a fun and unexpected idea! My only complaints are that the haunt overall was rather short and there really weren’t many actors. And they could spruce up the beginning part but overall I had a great time. I give it four and ½ outta 5 baby dragons.
There is still plenty of time to see Joliet Haunted Prison! Tickets are $20-$30 bucks depending on if you want regular or skip the line. For more info check out their website https://hauntedprison.com/ Don’t delay! Some of the ghosts are working on their appeals right now!
