Don’t become a victim!

Given the uptick in crime all over the city, I have introduced some routines to help keep myself safe, and I decided to share them. I don’t drive or really use a ride share service, so these tips apply to walking and public transportation.
Here are my recommendations:
- I only carry what I need in my wallet and keep a dummy phone in my purse (an old iPhone). I wear clothing with pockets to stash my current phone and a flat pouch that holds a credit card and some cash.
- When out walking, be mindful about occasionally turning around to see what’s going on behind you. If I see someone approaching who looks like they might be trouble, I immediately cross the street or step into a business.
- While waiting on a train platform, be aware of who is next to you and behind you. I never sit on a bench if no one else is around unless it’s against a wall.
- Before entering a train car, I make sure there are plenty of people in it. I never stay in a car if it’s just me and one or two other people. If the car starts to thin out, I move to another one at the next stop.
- Stick to high-traffic streets when out walking, especially if you are solo.
- Save the flashy handbags and jewelry for special occasions.
- Always be aware of your surroundings, which means PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY. We are all attached to our devices too much as it is, so pay attention.
I hope you find these tips useful. If you have any of your own to add, please let me know in the comments. Stay safe, Chicago!

My greatest passion is street art. I’m constantly pounding the pavement in search of murals with eyes wide open, so follow me on my colorful journey. View all my findings on Instagram @chicagosartandbeerscene.
Another passion of mine is beer. I consider myself a beer snob with a preference given to dark beer, especially stouts and barrel-aged. However, I’m always willing to try new styles because beer is life. Prost!
