Trayce Thompson (.233/.350/.469) blasted his organization leading 16th homer of the season. He was a nice pickup early in the season as a replacement for Cam Maybin. Thompson was once a top prospect for the White Sox, and has always been strong and possessed plus athleticism, but the hit tool has held him back consistently. He’s still not a great hitter, but he’s done just enough this year to help him tap into his plus raw power in game action more frequently.
Dillon Maples (1 IP, 2 H, R, 0 BB, 0 K) continues to struggle in his newest rehab bid. I gotta think he is running out of chances, but given the struggles of a couple of guys in the Cubs pen right now Maples will likely get another shot down the stretch. If he fails to do anything with it, I could see his roster spot be in jeopardy this offseason.

Game Recap
It was an impressive night for most of the South Bend pitchers who saw action. As a group they struck out 19 batters over just 13 innings of work. Trade acquisitions Alexander Vizcaíno and Bailey Horn turned in perhaps their best work in the Cubs org as they piggybacked South Bend to a victory, allowing just 2 runs while striking out 9 over the 7 inning game.
Here’s the changeup. Vizcaino is pitching with attitude, too. I love it. https://t.co/D7mr0tsDES pic.twitter.com/1mrMlv6W02
Bailey Horn pitched 3.1 innings tonight with three Ks. He looked much more Comfortable on the mound than he did in his first two outings as a Cub pic.twitter.com/MHGyPU6duT
Game 2 had a rocky performance from starter Chris Clarke (4 BB in just 1.2 IP), but lefty relievers Dalton Stambaugh and Burl Carraway racked up the Ks (9 in 4.1 combined innings).

Injuries, Updates, and Trends
Luis Vazquez (.313/.441/.438) continues raking out of the leadoff spot. He’s reached safely in all 17 games he’s played this season. His Game 1 homer on a hanging breaking ball was his 2nd of the season, putting him just one shy of his career high. The young shortstop is beginning to mature physically and it is a good sign that his increased strength is translating into increased slugging. His previous career high in SLG was just .300 in 2019.

Game Recap
The Pelicans did not allow an early 5-0 deficit get them down. Not with some of their top players swinging hot bats, and not with the new firepower in their lineup.
Young shortstops Ed Howard and Kevin Made both recorded three hit nights.

Newcomers Peter Matt and Owen Caissie both roped a pair of doubles. The top six batters in the Pelicans lineup managed to reach at least twice.

Caissie in particular has been a big boost in his first couple of games as he hasn’t let the promotion slow down his big debut season. His future with the bat looks very exciting. He’s got a keen eye (he also dew two walks), very quick hands through the zone, and the frame to develop into a top power hitter. His second double drove home two runs, completing the Myrtle Beach comeback.

Oh you thought he was done? Nah, @owen_caissie‘s go-ahead double in the 8th inning is the play of the game.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends
The Pelicans have become an exciting team to watch. Not only are shortstops Ed Howard and Kevin Made playing great defense but the youngsters are starting to hit as well. Howard has 8 hits in his last 5 games, and has a hit in 10 of his last 11. Made is hitting .341 in August. Both are certainly Top 15 prospects and most likely in the back half of the Top 10 for the org. Jordan Nwogu has turned his season around as well after massive early season troubles. The additions of Christian Franklin and Owen Caissie brings much needed power to the Pelicans lineup. Caissie has the look of a Top 5 prospect, and I would be fine if someone wanted to rate him #2 in the org behind Brennen Davis. The offensive ceiling is certainly there. I need to see a little more about how he projects defensively long term before I take that leap though.

Yeison Santana: 1-3, HR (1), R, 2 RBI, BB (.283)Malcolm Quintero: 2-2, R, BB (.333)Ismael Mena: 1-2, R, RBI, 2 BB (.238)
Injuries, Updates, and Trends
The Cubs drew 10 walks, with 8 of the 9 starters taking at least 1. But hits were few and far between, and the Cubs struggled to capitalize on their opportunities (1-for-8 with RiSP).
DSL
We’ve been waiting a while for top prospect Christian Hernandez (.253/.365/.380) to have a breakout at the plate this summer, and it is possible we are starting to see it. He hit a triple and walked in his previous game, and then went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and another walk yesterday.
Fellow shortstop prospect Pedro Ramirez (.376/.425/.523) followed up his 4-for-4 performance in his previous game, with three more hits yesterday. The youngest player in the Cubs system has been their most consistent performer in the DSL. He is 4th in the league in AVG, 19th in OBP, 12th in SLG, and 8th in OPS.
