Game Recap
As you might expect, the Smokies have hit a real rough stretch since returning to action after missing about a week of games due to a COVID outbreak. The roster features a number of callups and fill in players and they haven’t been competitive in several of their games since resuming play. They ended up using position player Matt Burch to pitch the final inning of this one.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends
Fill-in catcher Harrison Wenson (.203/.309/.386 with 4 different teams) has certainly done his part since joining Tennessee. The 26-year old defensive stalwart has been unexpectedly red hot with the bat, to the tune of 5 hits (2 2B/ HR) and 2 walks as he’s reached multiple times in all 3 games he’s played.

Game Recap
Bailey Horn recovered after a rocky 1st to give South Bend four much needed innings, and Jose Albertos followed with a pair of scoreless frames. The Cubs looked to be sitting pretty with an offense that was clicking and a two-run lead. But the offense dried up and Beloit exploited the talented but inconsistent South Bend bullpen over the final three innings, eventually running away with the game.

Game Recap
The Pelicans built an 8-1 lead on a pair of RBI hits by recent callups Owen Caissie and Felix Stevens in the 3rd, and then an RBI walk by Christian Franklin, and finally a grand slam by Kevin Made in the 4th.

The bullpen struggled to close it out, but ultimately held on, thanks to 2.2 shutout innings by Jarod Wright to earn his 3rd save.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends
Kevin Made (.276/.302/.369) picked a big spot to his his first career home run. The young shortstop had just 4 XBH this first 3 months of the season, but since the start of August he’s roped 9 doubles, a triple, and now a homer. The young shortstop (will turn 19 in 2 days) is showing the ability to adapt and learn on the fly. He’ll naturally grow into some more pop as he physically matures, but he’s also making some strides with plate discipline. It isn’t translating into walks yet, but he’s waiting for better pitches to drive.
Christian Franklin (.234/.419/.255 in 15 games between ACL/Low-A) hit his first career double:

Injuries, Updates, and Trends
After suffering a gruesome dislocated ankle while shagging fly balls before an Iowa game on May 21st, Jason Adam was back on the mound in Mesa. The veteran righty got the start, allowing a run on two hits in one inning, but its a success just to see him out there again so quickly. At the time of the injury we had assumed his season was over. The Cubs released him the day after the surgery. I’m not sure of the exact reason, it might have had to do with a contractual reason. Regardless, the Cubs re-signed him in early July and he’s been rehabbing since. At this point I would assume they bring him back on an MiLB deal this offseason to once again compete for a bullpen job in Chicago or Iowa.
It has been a dominating start to the pro career of 9th round pick Chase Watkins. After recording all of his outs via strikeout across two innings yesterday, the lefty reliever has now punched out 13 of the 20 batters he has faced in the ACL. He’s supposedly got decent velo to pair with the ability to spin really good breaking pitches. I would assume the Cubs send him out to a full season affiliate for the final two weeks of the season.
Michael McAvene threw batting practice yesterday. He’s been out with a reported partial tear of his UCL, which they have been trying to rehab all summer in an effort to avoid a second Tommy John surgery for the young righty.
