Chicago Blackhawks get an underwhelming return for Alex DeBrincatVincent Pariseon July 7, 2022 at 8:36 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks have been one of the hottest teams in the league on draft day in terms of rumors. With Kirby Dach and Alex DeBrincat on the block, it sounds like they are going to be busy. They have now traded DeBrincat and didn’t get nearly enough for him.

Chicago sent DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for the 7th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft and the 39th overall pick as well. In addition to those two picks this year, they got a third-rounder in 2024. That is not nearly enough for their now former All-Star winger.

DeBrincat is now a two-time 40-goal scorer that is still young enough to be “ahead of his prime”. There is a long way to go for him as he is going to continue getting better. Ottawa just stole him away. Based on the trade rumors from before, this is an underpayment by the Senators.

There were teams with better 2022 first-round draft picks that seemed interested as well but for some reason, this is the one that they came up with. It is hard to see a world where the Blackhawks become the winners in this trade. It isn’t a good start for Kyle Davidson.

The Chicago Blackhawks didn’t get enough for Alex DeBrincat in the trade.

Now, as a hockey fan, this is exciting from an Ottawa Senators’ point of view. They are a young, up-and-coming team that is going to get significantly better by adding DeBrincat. They have a lot of talent there that is just begging to take the next step as a team.

DeBrincat now joins guys like Thomas Chabot, Brady Tkachuk, Josh Norris, Tim Stutzle, and Drake Batherson amongst others. This team is going to be very good in short order. DeBrincat will only help them accelerate that.

Now, the Hawks are going to make a very interesting seventh overall pick. There is already intrigue at the top of the draft and it is only going to trickle down to Chicago’s pick at seven. They clearly wanted to get back into the first round this year and now they have. It just seems like they didn’t take the best road to get there.
