Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy updated the media on Monday in regards to his quarterback competition.
Training camp is in full force for the Chicago Bears, and the quarterback competition is on. Between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, the Bears will find themselves a starter one way or another in the coming weeks.
Leading up to camp, all questions pointed to Nagy and how he would split starting reps between the quarterbacks. Thus far, Nagy has stuck with a 50/50 split with Trubisky and Foles.
But, just how long will that split last? When does Nagy expect to have a guy pulling away and absorbing more than half of those starter’s snaps?
Nagy was asked that question on Monday during his time with the media. Via the Bears’ official Twitter account and stream, Nagy said that the split and overall competition would be “stretched out” as far as they can possibly stretch it.
It seems as though fans will have to wait a while until they get any indication as to whether Trubisky or Foles will get the nod to open the season against Detroit. As for today’s practice, Adam Jahns gave us the lowdown on how the quarterbacks looked.
Decision-making is the crucial aspect most would like to see Trubisky improve upon, therefore of course it’s the one area Nagy is focusing on most.
The ability to diagnose what the defense is giving you and go through progressions is something the Bears desperately need at the quarterback position. Fans will remember well the quote Trubisky gave us a couple of months back about re-watching every snap from last season and just now understanding what the defense was doing, versus what he thought he saw.
That kind of slow development has to stop here and now in camp. The ability to diagnose and make decisions quicker is a necessity at this point for a team with higher aspirations than an 8-8 finish a year ago.
Nagy also talked about where he sees Trubisky is at mentally, right now, and said he was in a great place. He talked about how great of a teammate Trubisky has been, and even specifically to Foles. Nagy said Trubisky is focused solely on how he can play the quarterback position as best he can, and is not worried about anything such as outside noise. Stacey Dales took down the full quote you can read here.
Whether it’s Trubisky or Foles, we can all agree that seeing the Bears win football games is the most important thing, overall. If Trubisky truly takes a step forward and shocks people, like myself, then there will be a lot of crow-eating going on — again, myself included.
