Durant, Irving, Aldridge clear protocols for Netson December 28, 2021 at 5:47 pm

print

The Brooklyn Nets announced Tuesday that Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and LaMarcus Aldridge had cleared the NBA’s health and safety protocols.

Aldridge has been in the protocols for two weeks, while Durant and Irving both entered 10 days ago.

Brooklyn had a massive outbreak across its roster, with more than 10 players entering into the protocols at the same time. That caused the NBA to postpone three Nets games in a row — home games against the Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards, and a road game against the Portland Trail Blazers — before Brooklyn returned to the court for Saturday’s Christmas Day win over the Los Angeles Lakers and Monday’s victory over the LA Clippers.

The Nets will next play Thursday at home against the Philadelphia 76ers — the last opponent Durant played against before going into the protocols. He scored 34 points to go with 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead the short-handed Nets to a 114-105 victory.

While Durant will likely be on the court for that game, Irving will not be, as he still is unable to play in games at either Barclays Center or Madison Square Garden due to his failure to comply with New York City’s vaccine mandate.

Given he’s unvaccinated, Irving can only play in games outside of New York and Toronto — meaning the first time he could take the court this season will be Jan. 5 in Indianapolis against the Pacers. Nets coach Steve Nash said recently Irving will need “a week or two” to ramp back up after exiting the protocols.

Irving hasn’t officially been with the team since the preseason, when Brooklyn decided to send him away rather than playing him in only road games. The Nets changed their minds recently, however, saying the circumstances of the season — and so many players being out due to COVID-19 sweeping through the league — led them to reverse course.

Irving entered the protocols the following day.

Hard work pays off for Bulls’ big man Nikola Vucevich

Nikola Vucevic was a man of his word.

After hitting rock bottom in an early season of several low points, the Bulls big man sat visibly frustrated at the interview table in Miami, and promised a commitment of putting his head down and working even harder on his game.

Not because he wasn’t working hard up to that point, but that’s just always been his mindset. That’s all Vucevic knows.

“I got here by working my way up to it,” Vucevic said that night. “Talent is part of it, but I worked my way to the level that I am, and now that I’m going through a tough time the only way I know is to work myself out of it.”

In his four games since that dismal 3-for-15, 10-point performance in the blowout loss to the Heat?

How about 32-for-64 (50%) from the field, 44% from three, 19.3 points per game, as well as 12.8 rebounds per contest. Impressed? Oh by the way, over that span 15 total assists and nine blocks.

Yes, getting back in the lab and getting in extra work while the Bulls were battling with postponements was huge, but give an assist to coach Billy Donovan.

Vucevic sure did.

“I took advantage of the time that we didn’t have games to put the work in, extra work on my game all around,” Vucevic said of his turnaround. “I also took time to look at a lot of game tape, see things that I was doing well and if there were things I could improve on.

“One thing that when I spoke to Billy that has stuck out and helped me is he knew I was frustrated with shooting the ball and he was like obviously as a player you want to shoot the ball well, but his main thing was I shouldn’t let that affect the rest of my game.”

An issue that was on full display in the Miami loss.

Not only did he carry his offensive frustrations to the defensive end, but even seemed disinterested in rebounding that night.

“When I looked at that [Heat] game I really felt that was the biggest thing,” Vucevic continued. “Obviously I didn’t shoot the ball well, but I wasn’t doing whatever else I had to do as a player on the court. I let that affect the rest of my game and I’m too good of a player to do that. I’ve been in this league too long to let a bad shooting night — or even if it was a couple of games it shouldn’t matter — affect my whole game in general.

“I think I was able to regroup and come back and focus on playing well, doing the things that I could control, and letting the rest follow through.”

That was the model in the Atlanta win on Monday night.

Vucevic was 2-for-6 with five points at the half against the Hawks, but had six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. With Atlanta making a run in the fourth, Vucevic balled out, scoring 13 points in that final stanza, as well as hitting three threes and grabbing five more rebounds.

He saved his best for last.

“I didn’t get going much until the second half, but I was able to do other things that kept me in the game, kept me in a rhythm,” Vucevic said.

Not that Vucevic’s teammates were the least bit surprised.

“I know how hard Vooch works,” veteran forward DeMar DeRozan said. “I would never let a period of time of him struggling depict who he is as a player. He’s a dominant force at his position, one of the most skilled big men inside and out that we have in this league. His career speaks for it. It was only a matter of time.”

New report on Chicago Bears, Matt Nagy is absolutely terrifyingRyan Heckmanon December 28, 2021 at 4:00 pm

The Chicago Bears enter Week 17 with a record of 5-10 and a future that should include plenty of change — or so we think.

This is now year number four in the Matt Nagy experiment. At first, it was cute. It was actually rather positive. Nagy came in and breathed some fresh air into the room, and Bears fans appreciated the energy and positivity.

But, as the years have gone on, fans have realized just how wrong any headlines were about Nagy being an “offensive genius.”

In fact, Nagy has been the polar opposite. In his fourth year, Nagy has led the Bears to the NFL’s 26th ranked offense overall. If anything, he is going backwards, and he’s certainly not the guy fans want to see developing rookie quarterback Justin Fields going into the future.

While most think the Chicago Bears will fire Matt Nagy, NFL insider Ian Rapoport cautions fans not to hold their breath.

Ian Rapoport had some interesting insight on Monday in regards to Nagy and his future with the Bears. While Nagy is under the assumption he will coach through the rest of the season, his future is now more undecided than ever.

“A firm and final decision has not been made,” said Rapoport.

The NFL insider went on to say something even more worrisome, noting that the team will look at the “entire product of four complete years” in their ultimate decision on Nagy’s future.

This is terrifying, sickening and, to be frank, not surprising whatsoever. This is a total Bears thing, if we’re being honest.

George McCaskey and Ted Phillips are not football guys. They don’t have a clue what they are doing running a football team. That’s been made abundantly clear over the years. So, for them to sit down and evaluate all four years, the highs and lows, when making their decision on Nagy, is not surprising.

If anything, these two would give Nagy the benefit of the doubt because he’s just a nice guy. He’s good at “collaborating.” Nagy gives those two a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

Why else would they have brought him back after 2020?

The hilarious part about this whole thing, and evaluating Nagy’s full four years, is that this season, the Bears’ offense is exactly where it ended last year. Chicago ended the 2020 season ranked 26th overall on offense — which, as we’ve established, is exactly where they’re currently ranked.

If McCaskey and Phillips are sold on mediocrity, maybe the reconsider giving Nagy another year, if Rapoport’s report holds any weight.

The majority of folks likely still assume Nagy will be fired no matter what. However, this one, lone report doesn’t sit well. Fans want finality. They want to be able to look forward — and this certainly doesn’t give them either one.

Chicago Bears’ Justin Fields can provide the Giants some regretRyan Heckmanon December 28, 2021 at 2:45 pm

Back in April when the Chicago Bears held the no. 20 overall pick, fans were desperately waiting to watch them move up. After all, the team had moved on from Mitchell Trubisky and were searching for their franchise quarterback.

As the first few picks of the opening round went by, the Bears looked like they would be in position for a move up — and finally, at no. 11, it happened.

The Bears moved up with the New York Giants to snag Ohio State’s Justin Fields — and the rest, as they say, is history. Fields became a Bear and the fan base roared — quite literally — with excitement.

Now, Fields likely gets to take on the team which helped the Bears acquire him on Sunday afternoon. So long as he is healthy (and he should be), the rookie will have an opportunity to show the Giants what they passed on.

Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears are playing for pride in somewhat of a prove-it game with the Giants in Week 17.

The Giants rode Daniel Jones another year in 2021 and, as it was reported just a day ago, it looks like they are going to ride with Jones for one more season in 2022. With the 2022 NFL Draft class not looking as strong at the quarterback position, the Giants could feel like Jones is their best bet to be competitive next season.

However, they will likely end up with two picks in the top 10, so don’t rule out the possibility of them giving Jones some competition.

For now, Fields gets an opportunity to face a Giants defense that sits in the middle of the pack in terms of their passing defense, giving up 238 yards per game through the air. New York is coming off a game in which they held Jalen Hurts to just seven yards rushing, however.

Fields has rushed for 420 yards on the season, and this is where he makes some of his biggest plays — with his legs.

The Giants have given up over 24 points per game this season, which would look like a phenomenal game for a Bears offense that has only managed 17.7 points per game this season.

Fields’ rookie season has been far from perfect, as he’s taken some bad sacks and had issues with ball security. But, this game is an important one. It’s only his second-to-last game of his rookie season. It’s a chance to truly show he’s learned a lot this year and, more importantly, prove to the Giants that they made the wrong decision allowing him to go to Chicago.

The Chicago Bulls now have four huge wins in a rowVincent Pariseon December 28, 2021 at 1:00 pm

The city has been seeing so much red over the past few months because the Chicago Bulls are so good. In fact, they are one of the best teams in the entire NBA. They defeated the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night by a final score of 130-118 to extend their winning streak to four. They are now 21-10 on the season which is extremely nice.

This was one of those games where Bulls players put up video game numbers. DeMar DeRozan led the way with 35 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds. Zach LaVine wasn’t far behind as he had 30 points with nine assists and four rebounds to go with a steal. To round out the big three on the night, Nikola Vucuevic had 24 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists to go with four blocks and a steal.

It was a magical night for those guys but Vucevic deserves a little bit of extra love. He was outstanding in this game. It could be argued that this was the best game he has had with the Bulls this season. He got off to a slow start this year but is all the way back now. With him playing like this, the team is flat-out scary.

The four wins in a row came over these Hawks, the Indiana Pacers, Houston Rockets, and Los Angeles Lakers. Every win on this streak has come at home except for last night against the Hawks which was in Atlanta. They have shown that they can beat almost everybody in almost every building. This is has been so fun so far.

The Chicago Bulls are really having an impressive season so far in 2021-22.

The Bulls and Hawks are both coming back to Chicago to play the second half of a home and home. It is a really good chance for the Bulls to add another important win over a team that they should be able to beat anytime (especially right now).

There are going to be some tough ones down the stretch so these wins are extra important. If they are able to stay healthy, they are one of the best teams in the entire NBA. Nobody is crowning them yet but they will be a really hard out once the postseason rolls around.

Ian Book of Notre Dame made his NFL debut on Monday Night FootballVincent Pariseon December 28, 2021 at 12:00 pm

Monday Night Football is always a lot of fun. The National Football League puts two teams in the spotlight once a week to play every Monday night and it is glorious. This week, it was the New Orleans Saints and the Miami Dolphins in a battle of two 7-7 teams trying to make it to the postseason. It also had a bit of Notre Dame flare to it.

Ian Book was the starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. They made him a fourth-round pick in 2021 after a great career with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team where he was one of the best they’ve ever had.

Of course, before the 2021 season, Saints fans were used to having future Hall of Famer Drew Brees. He retired after the 2020 season so they are looking for his long-term replacement. Jameis Winston is expected to have a chance but he is out long-term with an injury. They also lost both Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill to COVID-19 so Book was the guy on Monday.

It is a very proud moment for the Irish but this particular game didn’t go as planned for Book and the Saints. There were times where things looked good but the Miami defense was too much on this night.

Book threw 20 passes and completed 12 of them which isn’t a horrid percentage but he threw two interceptions (one went back for a touchdown) and had no touchdown passes. He also ran for six yards on three carries. He is an incredible athlete but he saw first hand what a big NFL linebacker that can fly looks like.

Ian Book made Notre Dame proud with his NFL debut on Monday Night Football.

This shouldn’t be the end for Book. He has shown that he can deal with tough losses and big wins in the past. It is about being steady when you are humbled in the NFL. Book can learn from this and do what he needs to in order to succeed in the NFL.

Those Miami Dolphins became the first team in NFL history to lose seven in a row and win seven in a row in the same season. They can clinch a playoff berth by winning each of their last two games against the Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots.

This was an incredibly fun game to watch for all football fans. Even though he didn’t have the best game, it was really cool for Irish fans to catch Ian Book making his NFL debut. Hopefully, he gets more chances and continues to improve.

Trae returns from protocols with 29 points in losson December 28, 2021 at 6:09 am

print

Hawks All-Star guard Trae Young was cleared from the NBA’s COVID-19 protocols on Monday and returned to the starting lineup as host Atlanta lost 130-118 to the Chicago Bulls.

Young, who entered the game leading the Hawks in scoring (27.3 points per game) and assists (9.3 per game), had 29 points, 9 assists, 1 rebound and 2 turnovers in 40 minutes in his return.

Young had missed three games while in the league’s health and safety protocols after a positive COVID-19 test. Atlanta was 1-2 without him. He returned two negative tests to be eligible to return.

The Hawks’ roster has been depleted by COVID-19 issues. Atlanta still had 10 players listed out for virus reasons for Monday’s game against the Bulls.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
