Chris Fleming’s showcase as the Bulls’ acting head coach coming to a close

All expectations are that coach Billy Donovan will be back Monday for the game against the Magic at the United Center.

Donovan entered the health and safety protocols before Christmas, testing the depth of the coaching staff.

Much like the players did during the coronavirus surge, the coaching staff passed with flying colors.

Assistant Chris Fleming was the acting head coach during Donovan’s five-game absence, and he said Saturday that the lessons he learned in that short time were invaluable.

“It’s been humbling, for sure, in the sense that you realize how big the job is and how many people are dependent on you being prepared and doing the right thing,” Fleming said. “It’s also been extremely enjoyable to figure things out as a staff and interact with the players in maybe a little different way than you do as an assistant.

“For me on a very personal level, it’s been super-valuable in terms of helping me learn. The players have been great partners in helping during this time while Billy’s out.”

The feeling was mutual from the players, who have praised Fleming for the preparation he puts into every game and for being himself rather than trying to take on a different persona in that role.

Fleming was considered a tough-love assistant and has maintained that style.

“I think everybody is who they are as a coach, who you are as a person,” Fleming said. “I think you’re going to slide over with your personality however you happen to be, good, bad or indifferent, and all of us have strengths and weaknesses. I try not to change very much moving over, but I do think these guys deserve a lot of praise for how they handled these last few weeks.”

Fleming also praised his fellow assistants, as well as Donovan.

Donovan might not have been around, but he definitely made it a point to keep as similar a routine as possible with his staff on Zoom calls.

With all the emotion that was unleashed after DeMar DeRozan’s last-second, game-winning shot Friday against the Pacers, Donovan even made an extra call before the game against the Wizards.

“We talk, Coach is in our meetings when we talk on Zoom every morning,” Fleming said. “We pretty much have the same rhythm we always would in terms of rotations and game strategy. Obviously, he can’t be there after that meeting. He kind of gives it over to us to take care of our stuff.

“He did address the team [Saturday] morning on Zoom and really told them how proud he was of their resiliency [Friday] night. So Coach is involved, but for obvious reasons, there’s a certain point where he lets us take care of things.”

Training room

The Bulls were down yet another starter against the Wizards. Javonte Green tweaked his groin against the Pacers and was forced out of the back-to-back. The plan was to get him back to Chicago and have him re-evaluated Sunday.

The Bulls took a light travel party on the road trip, so they wanted to get him looked at properly before giving a timeline on a return.

The news was better for the players in the health and safety protocols. Fleming said Lonzo Ball and Alfonzo McKinnie were expected back against the Magic. Tony Bradley was close but had not started the cardio screening.

Bulls’ DeRozan hits winner in 2nd straight gameon January 2, 2022 at 5:29 am

Chicago Bulls star DeMar DeRozan hit a buzzer-beating, game-winning 3-pointer for the second consecutive night Saturday, leading the Bulls to a 120-119 road victory over the Washington Wizards, their seventh straight win.

DeRozan, who hit a game-winner Friday to defeat the Indiana Pacers, is the first player in NBA history with game-winning buzzer-beaters on consecutive days, according to Basketball Reference.

“Just to hit a buzzer-beater in general is amazing, especially when you do it on the road,” DeRozan said on a video call after Saturday’s game. “I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m dreaming. If it’s real right now.”

He added: “It’s just an honor to be trusted in the fourth quarter. Whether things are going good or going bad, my team, teammates always leaned on me to be that calm presence to bring us home. I always bring that calm presence as much as I can in the fourth quarter, letting guys understand, as long we got time we got a chance.”

After DeRozan caught an inbound pass from Coby White with 3.3 seconds remaining in the game, he dribbled into the corner, went for a shot fake because he figured a younger defender, like Wizards rookie Corey Kispert, would bite, and still had time to make sure he got his feet set.

DeRozan finished with 28 points, nine rebounds and five assists. His shot at the buzzer was only necessary after Kyle Kuzma hit a go-ahead 3-pointer on the previous play.

“DeMar told me, ‘Hold my beer,'” Kuzma said.

The Bulls’ winning streak, and a loss by the Brooklyn Nets, has Chicago sitting alone with the best record in the Eastern Conference at 24-10.

The Bulls have continued winning despite not being at full strength, but should be getting some reinforcements back next week. Lonzo Ball and Alfonzo McKinnie have both cleared health and safety protocols and should be on track to return for Monday’s game against the Magic. Coach Billy Donovan will be eligible to return from the league’s protocols then too.

“I’m quite relieved I can give this back to coach,” acting Bulls coach Chris Fleming said with a laugh. “I was very fortunate enough to be able to experience this from the head coaching standpoint and see the guys from a little bit of a different side.

“I told them after that I was thankful for the partnership and how hard they poured themselves into making the situation a good one. That’s pretty much how their character has been all season. They’ve been resilient, they’ve handled other blows and different guys have been out and they’ve just kept chugging.”

DeRozan has continued to be at his best in the fourth quarter. During the final period, he is averaging eight points on 53% shooting and 54% from the 3-point line. He would be the first player in NBA history to put up that kind of production in the final period, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

For someone who thrives on mid-range shots, DeRozan is an unlikely candidate to be the only player with two-game winning 3s this season. Although DeRozan is shooting from 3 more frequently, his 2.2 attempts per game would be his highest since 2017-18 — he has still only made 25 total threes all season. Two have been game-winners.

“Thank God we have DeMar DeRozan on our team,” Bulls guard Zach LaVine said.

Bulls’ DeMar DeRozan plays ‘King of the Fourth’ at the horn yet again

Very little leaves Zach LaVine searching for words.

But there he was on Saturday, trying to best sum up what his teammate did on back-to-back nights.

“Dude is incredible,” LaVine said, and then started laughing. “I can’t say much more than that. … I thank God that we have DeMar DeRozan on our team.”

Indiana and Washington might have a little different take.

One that starts off with a head shake of disbelief, followed by a curse word, and DeRozan’s name somewhere attached to it.

Thanks to a second buzzer beater in as many nights by DeRozan, the Bulls have now won seven straight games and sit alone atop the Eastern Conference with a 24-10 record. As for DeRozan, he sits alone in fourth-quarter scoring around the league, and in cold-blooded heartbreak for the opposition.

“I seen two guys on me, I knew one would at least go for the pump-fake,” DeRozan recalled of his latest heroics with 3.3 seconds left on the clock on the inbounds. “After that I just wanted to make sure I got my feet behind the line and give it the chance to go in.”

Went in it did, delivering the Bulls to the 120-119 win, in a game they really had very little business being in.

“Just hungry, hungry to win,” DeRozan said, when asked what he was feeling after the latest miracle at the horn. “To be honest with you, just being in the locker room with guys and a coaching staff that make coming to work fun, motivating and exciting just to go out there and play.

“Every time I get the opportunity to go out there and play with these guys it’s a dream come true in a sense. Even though I’ve been in the league awhile, it’s that refreshed feeling that you have going out there to play basketball.”

He’s looked more than refreshed. DeRozan looked like a flat-out top three MVP candidate.

In beating Indiana in similar fashion a night earlier, DeRozan became the first player in league history to win games at the buzzer in back-to-back nights, and the first to do it in back-to-back games since Larry Bird in 1985. Bird had a day off between games.

The kicker in this latest win? Like the Pacers win, it was a game that the Bulls had some sleep-walking moments.

Defensive breakdowns remained an issue with too many miscommunications in pick-and-roll, and too many lethargic sets in which the Bulls simply got caught watching the ball rather than their man as possessions ticked down, leading to Washington attacking the rim with blow by after blow by.

That’s why the Wizards finished with 72 points in the paint to 30 by the Bulls.

Down 64-52 coming out of the halftime locker room, however, resiliency hasn’t been just coach-speak for the Bulls throughout this season, and that was on display once again in the third, as the switch was flipped. So was the scoreboard.

The defense was more focused, and Coby White again made an impact, as the Bulls outscored the Wizards by 10 in the third, led by White’s eight points and two assists.

That meant another nail-biter in the fourth, and more heroics by DeRozan, who has earned the nickname “King of the Fourth.”

The Wizards (18-18) grabbed the momentum on Kyle Kuzma’s three-pointer with 3.3 seconds left, putting them up two, but 3.3 seconds is a lifetime in DeRozan’s world. Evident by the fact that he checked his feet, pump-faked and still got the bucket.

“We don’t let nothing rattle us throughout the game and we just keep going,” DeRozan said. “I don’t know if I’m dreaming or if it’s real right now. Willing to step up whenever that moment is called for, and to be ready for it, that’s all can do.”
