What’s New

The Blackhawks are considering the Cubs assistant GMVincent Pariseon February 8, 2022 at 1:32 am

The Chicago Blackhawks are starting to get real weird with their search for a new general manager. Of course, it was a good idea to bring in Patrick Sharp, Marian Hossa, and Ed Olczyk as advisors but it has only gone downhill since announcing that.

They are announcing every candidate that they have interviewed on social media. It has been very “look at me” which is so strange. The team clearly wants people to like them again but this isn’t the way.

There have bad candidates that have had multiple massive failures with other organizations but that isn’t even the worst of it. Now, they are announcing people who are currently in front offices of other sports.

Chicago’s newest GM candidate that had an interview is Chicago Cubs assistant general manager Jeff Greenberg. Talk about bizarre. It is a bold strategy when you really think about bringing someone in who doesn’t even work in hockey.

Today, we interviewed Jeff Greenberg for our GM position.

More updates to come.https://t.co/r7T3R81v9G

Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) February 7, 2022

The Chicago Blackhawks should absolutely not look to the Cubs for their GM.

Most hockey teams don’t go to baseball (or any other sport) for help in building their teams. Hiring someone like John McDonough to run business operations was a different story but a general manager from another sport is just weird.

This is nothing against Greenberg. He has a Law Degree from an Ivy League college which means he is an incredibly smart man. It might not even necessarily be bad because of the fact that he comes from another sport. The real problem here is that he didn’t even run the said team from another sport.

Greenberg was with the Cubs for a long time. He went there with Theo Epstein in charge so you know he is a good dude. However, he was not high enough on the Cubs’ management pole to think he could just come to another sport and dominate.

The Hawks are not just any old team right now either. Rebuilding them is going to be so much harder than people think. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews each only have one year left on their deal after this one. They don’t have a future goalie that we are so certain will work. They don’t even have a first-round pick in this draft unless they win the lottery.

Do you move on from two of your five all-time greatest players? Do you trade Alex DeBrincat for a haul because he is on an expiring (and somewhat cheap) deal? What do you do about Seth Jones’ contract that hasn’t even kicked in yet? There is certainly a lot to worry about with this team. Hiring someone from another sport (who isn’t even a general manager over there) just feels wrong.

Cubs exec Greenberg interviews with Blackhawkson February 7, 2022 at 10:38 pm

CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs assistant general manager Jeff Greenberg has interviewed with the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks for their GM opening, becoming the first known candidate for the job from outside professional hockey.

The Blackhawks confirmed the interview on Monday. CEO Danny Wirtz, the son of team owner Rocky Wirtz, promised last month that the process would include candidates “both inside and outside of hockey.”

Greenberg took on his current role with the Cubs in 2020. He joined the franchise in 2012 as a baseball operations intern. He also has served as the Cubs’ director of pro scouting and baseball operations.

Greenberg has degrees from Columbia Law School and the University of Pennsylvania. He also interned with Major League Baseball’s labor relations department.

The Blackhawks also have interviewed interim GM Kyle Davidson, Carolina Hurricanes assistant GM Eric Tulsky, former NHL forward Scott Mellanby and longtime NHL executive Peter Chiarelli for the role.

Former Blackhawks forwards Eddie Olczyk, Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp are helping the team with its GM search.

Davidson was elevated to the interim job after longtime general manager Stan Bowman resigned in October in the wake of a report by an outside law firm, Jenner & Block, that found the organization mishandled allegations that an assistant coach sexually assaulted a player during the team’s Stanley Cup run in 2010.

The report also played a role in the departure of Al MacIsaac, another of Chicago’s top hockey executives, and the NHL fined the team $2 million for “the organization’s inadequate internal procedures and insufficient and untimely response.”

On Sunday night, the Blackhawks also confirmed to ESPN that they fired D.J. Jones, the longtime head athletic trainer of their AHL affiliate in Rockford, following an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment.

When reached by ESPN on Sunday, the Blackhawks confirmed that Jones’ employment had been terminated in November. According to sources, the person alleging sexual harassment was a member of the team’s ice crew, and the allegations were from an incident that happened years ago.

The person came forward with the allegations a day after Jenner & Block’s report on the Blackhawks was released.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball and San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray will make their NBA All-Star Game debuts after being named as injury replacements by commissioner Adam Silver on Monday.

Ball will take the spot of Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant, while Murray will sub for Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green. Durant is recovering from a sprained MCL in his left knee, and Green has a lower-back disk injury and said last week that he would miss the All-Star Game.

The league also announced that Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum will take Durant’s place as a starter. Per NBA rules, a starter has to be replaced by the reserve from the same conference and same position group (backcourt or frontcourt) who received the highest ranking in the voting for All-Star starters. That’s what gave Tatum the nod.

Durant still will participate in the All-Star draft as a captain alongside Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James. Durant and James will select their All-Star teams on Thursday.

Ball, the NBA Rookie of the Year last season, is averaging 19.6 points, 7.5 assists and 7.1 rebounds per game this season. The 20-year-old was also selected to take part in the Rising Stars festivities.

Murray, 25, is averaging 19.6 points, 9.2 assists, 8.4 rebounds and 2.1 steals this season — numbers that no player has reached during a single season in NBA history. He is looking to become just the third player to average eight assists, eight rebounds and two steals in a season, joining Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. He is also second in the league this season with 10 triple-doubles, trailing only Nikola Jokic.

Lovie Smith lands himself in a head coaching role once againVincent Pariseon February 7, 2022 at 8:09 pm

Whether people like it or not, Lovie Smith is the best head coach that the Chicago Bears have had in the 21st century. He was unfairly fired after a 10-6 season in 2012. The Bears failed to make the playoffs despite their 10 win season which is fair criticism but it isn’t like they got better with this move.

In fact, things have been significantly worse. Since Lovie walked out that door, the Bears have been graced by the presence of Marc Trestman, John Fox, and Matt Nagy. We hope that Matt Eberflus is a different story but only time will tell for that.

Under Lovie Smith, the 2006 Bears went 13-3 in the regular season. They rode that magic all the way to Super Bowl XLI where they were defeated by Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. It was a magnificent year that came up just short.

Since leaving the Bears for Lovie, he was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he did not have any success at all and that was followed by a stint as the head coach for the University of Illinois. He was then the Houston Texans associate head coach in 2021.

It is with great pleasure to say that he is going to be the next head football coach of those Texans that he has spent the last year with. He will be given an opportunity to coach in the NFL for the first time since 2015. He more than deserves this chance.

Texans are expected to hire former Buccaneers and Bears head coach Lovie Smith as their own head coach, sources tell me and @fieldyates.

Smith was the Texans’ associate head coach last season; all he now needs to do is drop the associate from his title.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 7, 2022

Now, the Texans are a disaster. They have had no luck with anything over the last few years. They need to figure out what to do with Deshaun Watson and that needs to be first and for most. He is an elite talent that has some serious legal issues going on right now. Once that gets resolved, the team can start worrying about football again.

Lovie will be tasked with turning that place around. It isn’t going to be easy but he has the knowledge and pedigree to get it done. It might take a long time and we can only hope that he is given the time needed to do so.

It is awesome to see him get this shot because the Bears probably should have never fired him in the first place. If he succeeds with Houston, it is fair to be extremely happy for him. The Houston Texans have Lovie Smith and the Houston Astros have Dusty Baker. Yay for early 2000s Chicago coaches landing in modern-day Houston.

Veering away from the formality of a traditional omakase experience, The Omakase Room is meant to feel like a dinner party hosted at Chef Kaze’s home. Alongside Chef Kaze will be Master Sushi Chef Shigeru Kitano, who has more than three decades of experience working at some of Chicago’s most prominent sushi bars including Momotaro, Japonais by Morimoto, Sushi Samba, and Hatsuhana. “We wanted The Omakase Room to be a departure from the traditional omakase experience,” said Amarit Dulyapaibul, Partner, The Omakase Room at Sushi-san.  “From the design of the space and playlist, to the way our chefs will interact with each guest, our intention is to break down the formality that usually accompanies this style of dining. The menu and service will pay homage to the spirit of Japanese omakase without being bound by its tradition.”

The evening will begin as guests enter through Sushi-san and are guided upstairs to The Omakase Room, where they are invited into a space reminiscent of a modern loft. Lively music will set the backdrop as a welcome drink is enjoyed in a living room setting before moving to the omakase room for dinner.

Great care and consideration were taken when designing the space for The Omakase Room, including partnerships with local ceramicists and stone masons to create one-of-a-kind service pieces including custom-made Lazy Susan’s which will be placed at each guest’s seat. The raised Japanese Hinoki cutting boards at the sushi bar will provide unobstructed views putting guests at eye level with the team of Master Sushi Chefs so they can observe all of the action and easily interact with the chefs.

The Omakase Room will source the best ingredients from across the globe relying on a partnership with the Yamasaki family at the Toyosu Fish Market. Daily fish deliveries, with a focus on wild line caught fish, will provide the freshest seafood available.
