Giannis’ 21 shots fourth fewest in 50-point gameon February 16, 2022 at 4:45 am

MILWAUKEE — Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 50 points and made 17 of his 21 shots from the field Tuesday night to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 128-119 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

The 21 attempts were the fourth fewest in a 50-point game in NBA history.

YearPlayerFGA1980Adrian Dantley171994Willie Burton192021Damian Lillard202022Giannis Antetokounmpo21– ESPN Stats & Information

It marked the first time Antetokounmpo has scored 50 points since Game 6 of last year’s NBA Finals, when his performance helped seal the championship for Milwaukee. It was the first time he’s hit 50 in the regular season since November 2019 (and third time in the regular season overall).

Antetokounmpo finished with 50 points, 14 rebounds and four assists against the Pacers, making him just the third player in NBA history to have 50 points and 10 rebounds while also shooting 80% from the field, joining Wilt Chamberlain (four times) and Karl Malone.

“The efficiency… it’s…it’s… it’s Giannis,” Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer said. “He’s special. It’s hard to fathom scoring 50 on 21.”

Antetokounmpo, who missed Monday’s loss to the Trail Blazers with a left ankle injury, also finished 14 of 18 from the free throw line. He scored 19 points in the fourth quarter and made all seven of his shots from the field, the most field goal attempts without a miss in the final quarter by any player this season.

Spring Break Travel Tips on a Budget

Spring Break Travel Tips on a Budget

BY SANDRA GUY

College students must take care against COVID’s contagion and variants, but as mask rules ease, the temptation to enjoy a true sun-and-fun Spring break reigns supreme.

So now the question: How do students on tight budgets enjoy a week or so (some colleges and universities give students only three weeks between Winter and Spring terms) taking it easy without blowing their budgets or their health?

It won’t be easy.

Prepare for eye-popping airfares and vacation rental prices.

Domestic airline tickets for the Feb. 15-March 31 period are 20 percent higher than the same time last year, at $292 roundtrip on average, according to booking app Hopper.

A vacation rental in Central Florida costs 22 percent more than the Spring break of a year ago, or $257 on average, says Hostaway, a vacation rental platform.

And on top of that, federal health officials on Feb. 14 warned travelers to avoid more than 135 destinations due to COVID-19.

The warnings are based on COVID-19 transmission rates of more than 500 new cases per 100,000 people over the past 28 days.

What’s safe?

Think outdoors, new adventures: Horseback riding, anyone? Cactuses (cacti) instead of beach views. That could be Scottsdale, Arizona.

Or how about magnificent mountain views and hiking? You might pick Asheville, North Carolina and a tour of the historic Biltmore Estate, followed by a side trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

More walking and history can capture your imagination in Savannah, Georgia. And if you must see water, try less crowded alternatives such as Flagler Beach, Florida; Munising, Michigan; Petoskey, Michigan, or Bayfield, Wisconsin.

After all, most of the fun is in the exploration.

Let It SNOW/ BUT IF IT DOES BEWARE OF DIBS/ IT’S CHICAGO IN WINTER/HEY YOU! DON’T COME OVER BY HERE.

Let It SNOW/ BUT IF IT DOES BEWARE OF DIBS/ IT’S CHICAGO IN WINTER/HEY YOU! DON’T COME OVER BY HERE.

Imagine about, let’s say, a good 15 or 16 inches of snow. You own two cars or you rent and have no garage to park the car in. So in order to get around the city or go to your workplace, your car needs to be rescued from under ALL THAT SNOW. SO YOU SCHLEPP OUT WITH THE OLD TRUSTY SHOVEL put in about a steady hour of hard labor shoveling a clear spot and liberating your vehicle from all that snow. Now the thought is hey! once I drive out somebody will take advantage of all my hard labor and snatch MY clean parking spot. But alas, never fear we are in Chicago and we HAVE DIBS.

In case anybody is in the dark on just what DIBS is, I will try and explain. Once the spot is clear the person or persons who labored mightily simply place an object or objects over and on HIS OR HERS cleared out space. It’s now been deemed DIBS. Interlopers beware, the ancient order of DIBS has ruled, It’s mine now not yours.

I can say with all honesty that after 33 years working as a cop in Chicago during the winter season DIBS calls rated right along with domestic calls as far as emotions and danger of bodily harm were concerned. I once (in full uniform) got between two DIBS COMBATANTS ONE WITH A HAMMER AND THE OTHER WITH A (believe it or not a bowling pin) I managed to survive and stay on my feet long enough for my assist to arrive. Believe me, there were many more violent confrontations but you get the picture I’m sure.

I always get asked what were some of the most creative DIBS placeholders I have seen. The photo that accompanies this post is probably one of the most creative. My caption was “IN THE IMMORTAL WORDS OF DIRTY HARRY-“GO AHEAD AND MAKE MY DAY. YIKES, WHO WOULD CHANCE VIOLATING THAT DIBS – So far nobody has dared, but rest assured it is one of the very few that has so far escaped the medieval battles for DIBS PARKING. Above are some of the other examples of dibs in photos. But for lack of proof, I will share some of the creative items I have come across on Chicago’s streets for at least the last 65 years or so. Wooden coffins, church pews, toilets, portable liquor bars, a baby crib with a DOLL inside accompanied by a sign that read: “BABY ASLEEP DO NOT DISTURB.” Also to save space, every imaginable household piece of furniture, including water heaters, and Old air conditioners. So for any of you not familiar with DIBS be careful where you park in Chicago. The city only will pick up the DIBS creativity after ample warnings and cops have become exhausted answering calls of mayhem. Only in Chicago as they say! Let it snow let it snow.

This time, last year

This time, last year

This time, last year, we were just starting to get vaccines more widely available. Remember, the stories of people in Chicago driving down to Carbondale for a vaccine?

This time last year, people were debating which was better–Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson&Johnson. United Center was opened up as a mass vaccination site. John Legend was a spokesman for vaccines at Walgreens.

This time last year, I didn’t have two Moderna shots yet. But I was on the waiting list! The delta variant, the Omicron variant, and the need for boosters, was in the future.

This time last year was brutal cold and snow, cold and more snow. There was a deep freeze and power outages in Texas. In Chicago, there was so much snow, there were problems with ice dams and roofs collapsing.

This time last year, in Oak Park, I was shoveling 18 inches of snow! O’hare Airport reported 17 inches. Here’s the post I wrote about it last year.

This year, there is once again snow in the forecast. The totals are still uncertain, at this time, but there may be rain and freezing rain before the snow.

This year, the last full moon of meteorological winter rises on February 16—Wednesday night. It’s also called the snow moon. And yes, meteorological spring begins March 1!

Ticket broker gets prison time in ChiSox schemeon February 15, 2022 at 9:49 pm

CHICAGO — A Chicago ticket broker convicted of fraudulently selling tickets to White Sox games was sentenced to prison Tuesday after a federal judge rejected his argument that he had actually helped the team by putting more concession-buying fans in the seats.

During a hearing, the judge sentenced Bruce Lee, 35, to 1 1/2 years in federal prison, after a jury in October found him guilty of fraud. U.S. District Judge James Kennelly also ordered Lee to pay $74,650 in restitution to the White Sox with his co-defendants and to personally forfeit about $450,000 in ill-gotten gains, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The judge made it clear that he wasn’t convinced by the argument made by Lee’s attorney in the sentencing memo seeking probation for Lee. The defense argued that the baseball team benefited at the concession stands from the scheme and that the team didn’t place any value on the tickets anyway.

Kennelly called the suggestion that nobody was harmed “delusional,” and said it was important to make the point to others who might want to embark on a similar scheme that getting caught might cost them their freedom.

“The math needs to include the possibility that, if I get caught paying these people under the table, I’m going to lose my liberty,” Kennelly said. “Without that, it’s just dollars and cents.”

Lee, the owner of a Chicago-based ticket brokerage, Great Tickets, and two White Sox employees, James Costello and William O’Neil, were arrested in 2020 and accused of taking part in a sophisticated scheme that involved selling thousands of fraudulently created tickets to White Sox games.

The scheme generated close to $1 million for the three men, federal prosecutors said at the time.

Costello, 67, and O’Neill, 52, have both pleaded guilty to their roles in the scheme. They cooperated with the investigation and are awaiting sentencing.

8 Small Ways to Improve Your Commercial Property’s Security

8 Small Ways to Improve Your Commercial Property’s Security

When you have a commercial property, it’s always necessary to have a security plan in place. Even if your property is in a low-crime neighborhood, it’s beneficial to stick with security enhancements ahead of time. You never know what might happen in the future.

Here are eight small ways to enhance the security of your commercial property.

1. Assess Your Security

You know it’s time for a security upgrade. However, before you make additional changes, a thorough assessment will help identify the vulnerabilities of your current situation. Doing so will provide you with a need for security touchups while avoiding missing any areas of security enhancements.

Additionally, you will receive suggestions for addressing potential and existing security challenges.

2. Install Motion Sensor Lights

Motion-sensor lights activate when somebody triggers the sensor while moving around on the property. This type of lighting is important for security for many reasons. For one, a blast of light from the motion sensor can startle any criminal lurking around your property. Likewise, this feature will help capture anyone committing a criminal act on camera. Furthermore, motion-sensor lights save on energy since you don’t have to keep them on at all times.

3. Add a Remote Gate

A security gate that closes remotely is one option to consider. Remote gates can help you control who is coming and going at any given time. Additionally, fences with pointed features can also provide a good deterrent to keep intruders out.

4. Install Security Cameras

Security cameras are a great way to learn what’s happening on your commercial property at all times. Moreover, you won’t need to hire someone to keep watch at all hours. You can check in on your building right from your mobile phone.

Security cameras make sense because they can help you identify anyone who is trespassing. Another option would be to use a CCTV camera. Although recording quality isn’t as high as a security camera, they still get the job done. Plus, you might be keen to install these cameras since they’re easy to lodge and cost less.

5. Consider Badge Entry and Intercom Systems

Badge entry systems require employees to use key fobs at specific entrances. This type of security measure is also excellent for employee-only parking lots. When you have a badge entry, you can narrow down who is entering the building with security footage.

Furthermore, an intercom system makes it easier to know who is coming in and out of your building. This security system can prevent people from entering without permission. Plus, it allows you to communicate with whoever is required to identify themselves.

6. Give Intruders a Warning

In certain situations, making it clear that you’re protecting your property gives intruders a reason not to steal from your business. For instance, you could place warning signs detailing that a CCTV camera is operating. Or making sure that cameras are visible will make intruders aware and second guess their attempts.

Studies show that security system signs are among the top ten deterrents for breaking and entering.

Either way, displaying an obvious sign shows that you’re serious about protecting your facility. In the event of a possible break-in, you can significantly reduce your chances of experiencing burglary.

7. Reevaluate Your Security System

It’s always a good idea to re-evaluate your security measures periodically. Your needs can change over time, and so can threats. What may have been an effective security measure could be less effective when there’s a change in your operations.

Changes like these could involve using new access points or housing expensive merchandise. Once you begin to experience different operations, it’s time to expand your security options.

The best times to re-evaluate your security are at least once a year or when significant changes occur in your business.

8. Remember Maintenance and Security Checks

It’s essential to maintain your security setup. If you do this performance yourself, be sure to do maintenance and security checks regularly. That way, you can ensure your property remains protected.

Keep Your Property Secured

It doesn’t matter how large or small your commercial property is—being vigilant about your security is what matters. Stay up to date regularly and be aware of any security concerns you need to address. Everyone, including employees, should watch your property, especially when entering and leaving the building. Follow these tips, and you’ll be sure to make the most of your security measures.

Harden, Sixers aim for title; trade ‘made sense’on February 15, 2022 at 8:43 pm

CAMDEN, New Jersey — James Harden on Tuesday said his newfound partnership with center Joel Embiid can deliver the Philadelphia 76ers their first championship in almost 40 years.

“For me, it made sense, man,” Harden said of the blockbuster trade during his introductory news conference at the team’s practice facility. “It’s a time where I needed to be around guys that I know want to win, and know that they are willing to do whatever it takes to win, and the structure here is unbelievable.

“[Winning a title is] the goal, man. That’s the goal. Like Daryl [Morey] said: The opportunity to win is now. Joel is playing the best he’s ever played. So my job is to come out there and help him and help the entire team win a championship this year and in years going forward.”

Tuesday marked the first time Harden had spoken publicly in almost two weeks, since one of the worst statistical performances of his career — four points on 2-for-11 shooting in the Brooklyn Nets‘ loss to the Sacramento Kings.

He missed the final three games of his Nets tenure with hamstring tightness before being reunited with Morey — the man who brought him to Houston a little over nine years ago — in a trade deadline blockbuster last Thursday that also centered around All-Star Ben Simmons.

After initially declining to get into specifics about why he decided his time with the Nets needed to end so soon after it began, Harden, who played alongside co-stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in just 16 total games, said the circumstances surrounding Irving’s decision to reman unvaccinated — and thus unable to play in home games in Brooklyn — had an impact on the team.

“Very minimal, honestly,” Harden said. “Like, obviously me and Ky are really good friends, whatever he was going through, or is going through, that’s his personal preference. But it definitely did impact the team because, originally, me, Kyrie, KD on the court — and winning — covers up a lot of that stuff. But it’s unfortunate that we played 16 games out of whatever it was, and it is what it is.

“Here in Philly is an opportunity, and I’m looking forward to it.”

While Harden has typically preferred to play with centers with more of a lob threat than Embiid, there is little doubt that the two of them should be able to cause massive problems for opposing defenses with their combined talent.

“I think we complement each other,” Harden said. “Obviously, the whole world knows how great Joel has been playing — not just scoring with the basketball, but rebounding. He had a triple-double last game. His presence alone is unbelievable.

“I feel like I’m the same way as far as making my teammates better and doing different things that impact the game at the highest level. And then we have a great core of guys that can also help with that. I wish I was playing tonight [against Boston Celtics], but just taking my time and after the break we’ll get things going.”

Harden spent about 45 minutes at the end of Tuesday’s shootaround going through a rigorous workout with 76ers assistant Sam Cassell as he works his way back from his hamstring injury. He will miss the final two games prior to the break — as well as the All-Star Game on Sunday — before returning to action against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Feb. 25.

“The hamstring feels really good,” Harden said. “Just doing a lot of strengthening work right now.”

For Morey, bringing Harden to the 76ers was the realization of something that he wanted to happen last year. And to do it, Morey said he was thrilled that he didn’t have to part with young guards Tyrese Maxey and Matisse Thybulle.

“Yeah, they were critical [to keep],” Morey said. “Tyrese absolutely has the chance to be an All-Star in this league. … Thybulle, I think, easily can be Defensive Player of the Year — after Joel wins it first, he told us.

“… Both of them, I think, the sky’s the limit. And that’s a big reason why we made sure that they weren’t in this trade.”

In the end, however, this deal was about Harden, and about the superstar guard removing himself from a situation that he was unhappy with for the second time in as many seasons.

“I mean, it wasn’t planned like this,” Harden said with a laugh when asked about being on three teams in a little more than a year. “Fourteen months ago, I didn’t see myself with three different teams. But we are here today and I’m happy.

“[The] last year has been a lot of ups and downs, a lot of stress, but whatever. That’s in the past. I’m excited, I’m healthy and it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.”

For Philadelphia, it’s also an opportunity to move on from the non-stop storyline that was Simmons’ decision to stay away from the franchise over the past several months as he sought his own trade.

At times, it was unclear if that situation would drag on into the offseason. Instead, Harden presented an opportunity to land, as Morey said repeatedly, the kind of second star that tangibly increases Philadelphia’s championship possibilities.

Now, the 76ers will go try to win one.

“We talked about it,” coach Doc Rivers said. “We can do a lot of winning or we can try to be the winner. And being a winner is hard. That’s what we want to become. That’s why we make trades like this, going out and getting Paul [Millsap] and James.

“We want the opportunity to be the winner, and we believe this trade does that.”
