SALE, Morocco — Trailblazing basketball coach Liz Mills has become the first female head coach of a men’s team in Morocco.

Mills has been hired by AS Sale, which competes in Morocco’s top division, and she is set to be the first female head coach in the Basketball Africa League when the joint NBA-FIBA competition starts its second season next month.

“It’s with great pleasure that we confirm the hiring of coach Liz Mills as head of AS Sale’s technical staff for the rest of the season with the possibility to renew if mutually agreed,” the team said.

“This is a first in Morocco and in the Arab world,” it added.

The Australian had already become the first female head coach at a men’s AfroBasket tournament when she led Kenya at the continental championship last summer.

“Excited to announce I’m joining as the head coach for the upcoming season and the national league,” Mills said on Twitter.

Brigitte Affidehome Tonon was the first female head coach of an African men’s national team in 2017 for Benin.

Mills, a Sydney native, had been an assistant at the club and national level in Africa for a decade before being hired as Kenya’s head coach.

Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine’s tweet suggests positive newsJordan Campbellon February 16, 2022 at 4:12 pm

The Chicago Bulls have dealt with injury after injury during the 2021-2022 NBA Regular Season but have still managed to remain among the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

The Bulls’ run at the top of the Eastern Conference may be in jeopardy depending on the injury status of guard Zach LaVine. He has missed the Bulls’ past two games with a left knee injury and was scheduled to meet with doctors on Tuesday.

LaVine’s left knee is the one that was surgically repaired when the guard tore his ACL during his 2016-2017 season with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

LaVine will not be available in the Bulls’ game against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night and head coach Billy Donovan is hopeful that LaVine’s meeting with doctors will uncover the origin of the knee soreness for the Bulls’ guard.

“He swells after games sometimes, and sometimes he doesn’t,” Donovan said. “So I think getting to the bottom of some of that stuff, you know, they’ve obviously done imaging. He is cleared to play. There is discomfort there. He doesn’t feel great. It really kind of just depends.”

Donovan has yet to meet with reporters ahead of the Bulls’ game against the Kings on Wednesday night but LaVine’s recent tweet would seem to suggest that he received positive news regarding his knee.

pic.twitter.com/NAjT3hAedo

— Zach LaVine (@ZachLaVine) February 16, 2022

LaVine’s tweet would seem to suggest that the injury is not as severe as originally speculated. The All-Star Break begins after Wednesday and this could serve as the time that LaVine needs to rest before returning to action once the second half begins next week.

LaVine is currently scheduled to participate in the three-point contest on Saturday as part of the NBA’s All-Star weekend but it would seem likely that he forgoes the event.

The Chicago Bulls are going to need a healthy Zach LaVine in the second half.

While DeMar DeRozan is having a historic season for the Bulls, the team is going to need a healthy LaVine if they are going to have any chance of making an extended run in the playoffs.

On the season, LaVine is averaging 24.6 points per game with a field goal percentage of 48.2 percent and a player efficiency rating of 20.4. The Bulls have been able to survive the extended injuries of guards Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso as they are currently in the weak part of their schedule.

However, the Bulls’ second-half schedule begins with a brutal six-game stretch that includes two games against the Atlanta Hawks, as well as games against the Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, and Philadelphia 76ers. LaVine will be needed if the Bulls plan to survive those six games while remaining at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Silver: NYC vax rule for Kyrie makes no senseon February 16, 2022 at 3:54 pm

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the New York City vaccination mandate that is preventing Nets guard Kyrie Irving from playing in home games “doesn’t quite make sense to me,” speaking during an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up on Wednesday morning.

As a player unvaccinated against COVID-19, Irving may not play at the Barclays Center because of the mandate. However, a player from a different market who is unvaccinated may play in New York City.

“This law in New York, the oddity of it to me is that it only applies to home players,” Silver said. “I think if ultimately that rule is about protecting people who are in the arena, it just doesn’t quite make sense to me that an away player who is unvaccinated can play in Barclays but the home player can’t. To me, that’s a reason they should take a look at that ordinance.”

2 Related

Silver said that the league wanted to make vaccinations a requirement for players but that the NBPA pushed back. Still, he mentioned having 97% to 98% of players vaccinated and a “vast majority” boosted.

With the NBA offices in New York City, Silver has seen firsthand some of the masking restrictions being lifted, and he mentioned that there’s a “feel” in the city and that more people are out and about.

“So while, again, my personal view is people should get vaccinated and boosted, I can imagine a scenario where Brooklyn, as part of New York City, with a new mayor now who wasn’t in place, Eric Adams, when that original ordinance was put into place, I could see him deciding to change along the way and say it’s no longer necessary to have a mandatory vaccination requirement, as I said, particularly one that only affects home players,” Silver said.

This past Saturday, while talking to reporters in Miami, Irving expressed hope that the mandate would get overturned allowing him to play in home games.

“There’s no guilt that I feel,” Irving said. “I’m the only player that has to deal with this in New York City because I play there. If I was anywhere else in another city, then it probably wouldn’t be the same circumstances. But because I’m there, we have Eric Adams, we have the New York mandate, we have things going on that are real-life circumstances that are not just affecting me, bro. So you ask me these questions, I don’t feel guilt.

“I’m just living my life as best I can, just like everybody else that missed these last two years. I didn’t have a plan in place while all this was going on, didn’t know. The NBA and the NBPA made it very clear that there would be things that I would be able to do to work around this. And that’s off the table. So you tell me if I’m just alone out here or do I have support from everybody else that’s dealing with the same thing?”

Irving’s comments came two days after the blockbuster trade that sent James Harden from the Nets to Philadelphia and brought Ben Simmons to Brooklyn in a trade that played out publicly in terms of trade demands.

Silver said he hopes situations like this don’t play out in public that way but recognized that situations like this will occur.

“Ideally, when players want to get traded or teams are preparing to make moves, those are conversations they have confidentially with players, they have confidentially with other teams,” Silver said. “Obviously, in this case, it not only played out publicly but it’s been playing out since the season even began, particularly with Philly.”

When asked about what the data showed on the impact superstar movement has had on NBA fans, Silver said viewpoints have changed over the years.

“I remember David Stern’s sort of standard mantra was he would say Larry and you’d say Boston, you’d say Magic, you’d say Michael and you’d say Bulls, but that was a different time,” Silver said. “Now, what we’re seeing in the league, first of all, shorter contracts, which I don’t think is a bad idea because one of the things we tried to do working with our Players Association back beginning around ten years ago was tie performance to pay in a closer way, and I think that’s what you see with shorter contracts.”

And while shorter contracts were something the league was good with, there is one thing Silver doesn’t want to see.

“So, the data shows that superstars moving isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it allows bad situations to, in an orderly way, to change,” Silver said. “It gives teams that may not be in a competitive position hope that they can sign one of those players, but shorter contracts to me is something very different, and free agents moving at the end of contracts is different, than what we just saw where you have players actively seeking to move while they’re under contract. The data is clear on that. That’s not good for the league.”

3 moves the Chicago Cubs need to make after the lockoutJordan Campbellon February 16, 2022 at 3:30 pm

Chicago Cubs Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs offseason is currently on pause as Major League Baseball and Major League Baseball Players Association continue to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. Major League Baseball’s instituted a lockout the first day of December and since then, teams have not been able to make any transactions at the Major League level.

Prior to the lockout, the Cubs had just began making moves to improve their Major League roster. The completed transactions for the Cubs thus for at the Major League level were a successful waiver claim of former Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Wade Miley; signing veteran catcher Yan Gomes; signing former Pittsburgh Pirates top outfield prospect Clint Frazier; and signing former New York Mets starting pitcher Marcus Stroman.

The signing of Stroman was perhaps the most significant move that the Cubs have made thus far in the offseason. Prior to the signing, the direction for the 2022 Cubs was unclear. After the selloff that the Cubs underwent at the trade deadline last season, there was a belief that the Cubs would enter a rebuild period. However, with Stroman now in the fold, the thought is that the Cubs may look to return to contention next season.

Once the lockout ends, the Chicago Cubs will need to be prepared to make moves in order to return to contention in 2022.

If the Cubs are going to contend in 2022, then the team will need to be prepared for once the lockout ends. Once free agency resumes, there is going to be a flurry of moves that will occur as teams look to finalize their Major League roster before what is likely going to be an abbreviated version of Spring Training. In particular, there are three moves that the Cubs will need to make if they do indeed plan on contending next season.

Chicago Bulls have two league-leading stars over past monthRyan Heckmanon February 16, 2022 at 2:33 pm

The Chicago Bulls currently sit tied for first place in the Eastern Conference, and after one hectic trade deadline which saw the East shaken up by a blockbuster deal, are sitting back and waiting to get healthy.

It’s remarkable that the Bulls have been able to consistently stay towards the top of the conference standings, especially since the dreaded day of January 15.

Why is this date so significant? Since January 15, Zach LaVine has played in only half the Bulls’ games (nine of 18) mostly due to additional soreness in his knee. With LaVine out, the Bulls have been severely undermanned.

The Bulls have also been without Lonzo Ball since — wait for it — January 15. The team has also been down Alex Caruso for a similar amount of time, along with Derrick Jones Jr. — who finally just returned — and Patrick Williams, for most of the season.

Of course, the Bulls also missed Javonte Green for an extended period of time, too.

Since January 15, the Chicago Bulls have two NBA-leading stars on their roster, keeping them in every single game.

During this stretch, there have been two players who have stepped up in a monumental way: DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic.

Since January 15th …

NBA leader in points: DeMar DeRozan (557)
NBA leader in rebounds: Nikola Vucevic (226) pic.twitter.com/5MAST8zlhq

— Elias Schuster (@Schuster_Elias) February 15, 2022

DeRozan leads the league in points since January 15, while Vucevic leads the league in rebounds.

What a world we’re living in, folks. Not only are the Bulls tied for first place deep into the season, but they’re doing it without a meaningful chunk of their roster and these two guys are playing some inspired basketball.

Say what you want about Vucevic, and some of his bad games being extraordinarily bad, but without him, the Bulls aren’t where they’re at. Vucevic may have some bad offensive nights, but his rebounding and defense in the paint shouldn’t go overlooked.

Then, there’s DeRozan, who is on another planet this season. He’s having a season that no Bull has had since the likes of Michael Jordan. In fact, DeRozan very well could break an NBA record held by the great Wilt Chamberlain.

People will talk all day long about Joel Embiid and his MVP campaign, but DeRozan is right on his heels. The wild card in this MVP race is going to be how James Harden impacts Embiid’s numbers and the Sixers as a team, overall.

Meanwhile, the consistency has been there for DeRozan and the Bulls. He’s been the cool, calm and collected closer for Chicago. It’s gotten to the point where, when he misses a shot, fans are genuinely surprised. He’s been that good.

Between DeRozan and Vucevic, the Bulls have been in great hands while the rest of the crew is getting healthy. By standing pat at the trade deadline, these Bulls showed the ultimate confidence in their team. If they’re here while the team is dealing with key injuries, just imagine how far they’ll go when health is on their side.

A Morning Moon Prayer

A Morning Moon Prayer

Preview in new tab

The Morning Moon Glows Through the CloudsOn Mobile phone or Tablet, scroll down please!
The morning moon glimmers so low in the West,
Before the sun rises, the sky to contest.
What will the day bring, the moon seems to say.
As all ‘cross the world, do the herky-jerky ballet.
Will Covid come lurking, waiting behind all our masks,
And make us think twice before every day tasks?
Or have all our jabs, and Ivermectin convinced us,
That our worries are gone, no need for this fear fuss.
Which Russian will step up, to grab our attention?
The leader? The skater? It’s beyond comprehension.
That a fifteen year old girl who’s charged with drug doping,
Distracts us from Putin, while the Ukraine he’s groping.
I read Trump’s finances might go down the toilet,
We can savor the moment, and really enjoy it.
But what does it matter when millions adore him,
I’ll go look for a cave, to hide and explore in.
The Senate and House, the foundations of Congress,
Are masters of nothing, they really could care less,
About all the aspects in which the country is lacking,
They just want your dollars, they just want your backing.
The Super Bowl’s over, the Rams are the winners,
While the Bears here in town, just hire beginners.
The half-time display was all hip-hop and glamour,
Love Snoop Dog, Love Fifty, but where’s Kanye and Hammer?
And baseball is stranded with no games approaching,
The negotiating teams could sure use some coaching.
When zillionaires squabble over dividing the big bucks,
It’s paying fans in the stands who feel like the stiffed schmucks.
We Wordle our way to achieve adulation,
When our score is the lowest we post the citation.
Do you start with “arise” or do you start with some other?
The Times of New York can now track like Big Brother.
Well, the climate’s still heating, there’s no easy solution.
We’ve got crime, we’ve got hate, we’ve got water pollution.
But the moon as it shines, on today’s early morning
Says the sun will rise soon, let’s pray a good day’s aborning.

Doesn’t Look Like Chicago Foreclosure Activity Will Become A Problem

Doesn’t Look Like Chicago Foreclosure Activity Will Become A Problem

Since the moratorium ended Chicago foreclosure
activity has not rebounded that much.

I’ve decided that we won’t see the large increase in pandemic induced foreclosure activity that so many were worried about. ATTOM Data Solutions released their January foreclosure market report last week. There’s no point in even discussing how much higher foreclosure activity is this year compared to last year since last year was artificially suppressed by the government’s foreclosure moratorium. Rick Sharga, executive vice president of RealtyTrac, even said:

It’s very important to keep these numbers in context. Foreclosure completions are still far below normal levels – less than half as many as in January of 2020 before the pandemic was declared, and about 60% lower than the number of foreclosure completions in 2019. We’re likely to continue seeing large year-over-year percentage increases for the rest of this year, but it’s also likely that foreclosure activity will remain below historically normal levels until the end of 2022.

So, basically, foreclosure activity is at historically low levels. You can see that in the graph of Chicago’s foreclosure activity below which appears to have picked up about where it would have ended up had you simply extended the trendline from before the pandemic.

After a dramatic plunge following the pandemic foreclosure moratorium Chicago foreclosure activity has just now begun to resurge now that the moratorium has ended.

And it’s not like the foreclosure moratorium was just holding back the dam either. Check out the latest national delinquency rate from Black Knight’s December Mortgage Monitor Report. Although the delinquency rate spiked during the pandemic it has since basically returned to pre-pandemic norms – not to mention that everyone’s home is worth more money now so people can sell their homes for more than they paid for them instead of going into foreclosure.

The nation’s mortgage delinquency rate continues to improve and seems to have recovered from the pandemic

Chicago Shadow Inventory

In addition, the number of homes that are in some stage of foreclosure isn’t really moving much in the last few months. I just checked it and it is only up by about 66 units since last month, so it’s not going anywhere. If anything, it’s surprising that it’s not declining, given that more homes are supposedly reaching the final stages of foreclosure than homes going into foreclosure at the front end (see the graph above).

The number of homes in foreclosure in Chicago declined with the moratorium during the pandemic and doesn’t seem to be rising since.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears were not believed to be in the market for the two top quarterback prospects of the 2021 NFL Draft. Prior to the NFL Draft, most draft experts had Trevor Lawrence as the the top quarterback prospect and Justin Fields was believed to be the second best quarterback prospect.

Given the success that Lawrence had at the University of Clemson, it was no surprise that he was not only the top quarterback prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft but the top prospect overall. In three seasons as the starting quarterback of the Clemson Tigers, Lawrence compiled 10,098 passing yards and 90 touchdown passes with a completion percentage of 66.6 percent. Lawrence also proved to be a threat on the ground as he compiled 943 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns during his three-year run as the starting quarterback for the Tigers.

Meanwhile, Fields was equally as dominant with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Fields began his collegiate career as a freshman with the University of Georgia but did not fully establish himself as a starter until he transferred to the Ohio State University. In his two seasons as the starting quarterback of the Buckeyes, Fields passed for a total of 5,371 yards and 63 passing yards while completing 68.4 percent of his passes. Fields was also a threat on the ground as he compiled 867 rushing yards in his two seasons with Ohio State to go along with 15 rushing touchdowns.

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields had a similar season in comparison to Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Dating back to high school, Fields and Lawrence’s journeys have always been mentioned in the same breath. The two have always been considered the top two quarterback prospects as they progressed through high school and college. With both now in the NFL, eyes will be on both Fields and Lawrence in order to determine who is the better quarterback once and for all. Lets take a look at how both Fields and Lawrence fared during their rookie seasons.

Giannis’ 21 shots fourth fewest in 50-point gameon February 16, 2022 at 4:45 am

MILWAUKEE — Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 50 points and made 17 of his 21 shots from the field Tuesday night to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 128-119 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

The 21 attempts were the fourth fewest in a 50-point game in NBA history.

It marked the first time Antetokounmpo has scored 50 points since Game 6 of last year’s NBA Finals, when his performance helped seal the championship for Milwaukee. It was the first time he’s hit 50 in the regular season since November 2019 (and third time in the regular season overall).

Antetokounmpo finished with 50 points, 14 rebounds and four assists against the Pacers, making him just the third player in NBA history to have 50 points and 10 rebounds while also shooting 80% from the field, joining Wilt Chamberlain (four times) and Karl Malone.

“The efficiency… it’s…it’s… it’s Giannis,” Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer said. “He’s special. It’s hard to fathom scoring 50 on 21.”

Antetokounmpo, who missed Monday’s loss to the Trail Blazers with a left ankle injury, also finished 14 of 18 from the free throw line. He scored 19 points in the fourth quarter and made all seven of his shots from the field, the most field goal attempts without a miss in the final quarter by any player this season.
