Fantasy basketball and NBA betting cheat sheet for Thursdayon March 3, 2022 at 6:28 pm

The ESPN fantasy and betting cheat sheet is your pregame destination for our best intel and data to help you make smart fantasy and wagering decisions. NBA game odds are provided by Caesars Sportsbook and fantasy advice is based on ESPN 10-team leagues.

Jump ahead: Game of the night | Picks and props | Analytics edge

What you need to know for tonight’s NBA slate

by Jim McCormick and Kyle Soppe

Return of Durant: All signs point to the Kevin Durant returning from a knee injury tonight against the Heat. This likely limits the appeal of Cam Thomas in both season long and DFS. The impressive rookie has been held under 15 points in five of the past six games when Durant was healthy. (He averaged 16.5 PPG in Feb, a month Durant missed all of).

Heat Check: Miami blew a big lead in Milwaukee last night, as Kyle Lowry missed another contest due to personal reasons. In Lowry’s absence, guard Gabe Vincent— rostered in just 2.5% of leagues — produced 21 points to go with six dimes. Vincent now has dropped at least 20 in consecutive games and has logged 65 minutes across his last two games — both starts. If Lowry remains sidelined, finding room for Vincent on your fantasy roster or in DFS lineups could be a savvy way to find an edge this evening.

Seeing Red: The numbers for Bogdan Bogdanovic (31% available) are down compared to last season, but he’s trending in the right direction. Bogdanovic has averaged 11.5 PPG in Oct., 11.6 in Nov., 12.3 in Dec., 15.1 in Jan. and 17.0 in Feb. He makes for an interesting option in prop markets and DFS games given that he’s been a much better shooter at home than on the road during his time in Atlanta. He dropped a season high 27 points (and five triples) against the Bulls last Thursday.

2 Related

Magic In Memphis: Ja Morant is on a different level, but De’Anthony Melton is an interesting option in the over 89% of leagues he’s still available in. The fourth year guard recorded a steal in every game last month while averaging 11.5 points and 5.0 rebounds. Boston’s defense is among the best in the league, so Memphis’ supporting cast may need to step up tonight.

Betting Boston: The Celtics will be without Jaylen Brown due to an ankle injury for this matchup with Memphis. With Brown off the floor this season, Jayson Tatum has seen the team’s largest leaps in usage rate and fantasy points per minute, aiding his case to hit scoring props. Newly acquired Derrick White is also in a good spot to help DFS investors. Defensive props for rising DPOY candidate Robert Williams could prove rewarding given he’s swatted multiple shots in consecutive games and tonight faces a Grizzlies team that ranks fourth in shot attempts from within five feet of the basket.

Shining Spur: One of the underrecognized outcomes of the trade deadline has been Devin Vassell‘s recent leap as a playmaker for the Spurs. After White was traded at the deadline, Vassell (rostered in 16.2%) has averaged nearly five dimes during his last five games. His shot hasn’t fallen lately, but maybe that changes against the Kings’ soft perimeter defense tonight.

Game of the Night

Line: Heat (-3)
Moneyline: Heat (-140), Nets (+120)
Total: 221 points
BPI Projected Total: 216 points
BPI Win%: Heat (63.6%)

Key players ruled out: Ben Simmons, Kyrie Irving

Notable: Overs are 9-2 in Brooklyn’s past 11 games and, dating back to last season, overs are 12-1 in Miami’s past 13 games on the second night of a back-to-back (they were in Milwaukee last night).

Fantasy Streamer: Gabe Vincent. Surprisingly, Vincent is still available in 96.3% of ESPN leagues. Due to personal reasons, Kyle Lowry will be unavailable for the near future, so you should stream Vincent. When Lowry is not in the lineup, he is a reliable streamer. This season, he has averaged 13.2 points, 4.7 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 20 spot starts. — Eric Moody

Best bet: Heat -2.5 points. The Nets are expecting Kevin Durant back, which should give them a big boost, but this is his first game in months, playing with a largely unfamiliar supporting cast against one of the best teams in the league. The Heat have won nine of their last 11 games, with an average scoring margin of +9.3 PPG. Fresh off yesterday’s heartbreaking loss to the Bucks, they should be motivated to try to send the Nets a message in KD’s return. –Andre Snellings

Breaking down the rest of the slate

Line: Bulls (-1.5)
Moneyline: Bulls (-115), Hawks (-105)
Total: 231.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 226 points
BPI Win%: Hawks (60.2%)

Key players ruled out: Onyeka Okongwu

Questionable: Trae Young (ankle), Lou Williams (hip)

Doubtful: John Collins (foot)

Notable: Under tickets have come through in each of Chicago’s past three games and in five of the past six. The Bulls have dropped consecutive games ATS after going 7-2 against the number in their nine games prior.

Best bet: Zach LaVine over 31.5 total points+ assists + rebounds. In all of the Bulls’ post-break games, LaVine has scored 20 or more points while shooting 46.2% from the field. In his last five games against the Hawks, he has averaged 29.4 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds. Atlanta ranks 27th in points allowed per 100 possessions. — Moody

Line: Celtics (-2)
Moneyline: Grizzlies (+110), Celtics (-130)
Total: 224 points
BPI Projected Total: 216.5 points
BPI Win%: Celtics (59.8%)

Ja Morant has averaged 33.0 PPG during the past nine games. Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Key players ruled out: Jaylen Brown

Notable: The Grizzlies are 6-2-1 ATS over their past nine games, but betting the totals has been a roller-coaster: three straight unders on the heels of eight consecutive overs.

Best bet: Grizzlies +2.0. The Celtics (12-2 last 14 games, scoring margin +14.7 PPG) and Grizzlies (11-3 last 14, +10.5 scoring margin) are two of the hottest teams in the NBA right now. But with Jaylen Brown out, it tilts the balance of power towards the Grizzlies even on the road. — Snellings

Line: Raptors (-8.5)
Moneyline: Raptors (-420), Pistons (+320)
Total: 216.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 211.5 points
BPI Win%: Raptors (72.8%)

Key players ruled out: none

Doubtful: Marvin Bagley III

Notable: Don’t look now, but the Pistons are 4-0-1 ATS in their past five, with zero of those games going under the total.

Fantasy Streamer: Isaiah Stewart. With Marvin Bagley III doubtful, Stewart, who is available in 37% of ESPN leagues, is on the streaming radar. In his last eight games, he has averaged 10.5 points and 8.4 rebounds. Betting on total points + rebounds and a double-double is a good idea. The Raptors are one of the worst offensive rebounding teams in the league. — Moody

Line: Warriors (-2.5)
Moneyline: Warriors (+105), Mavericks (-125)
Total: 219 points
BPI Projected Total: 223.5 points
BPI Win%: Mavericks (61.6%)

Key players ruled out: Andre Iguodala, Draymond Green

Notable: The Mavs have covered five straight games and nine of their past 10 (under tickets have come through in seven of those 10 games).

Best bet: Jalen Brunson over 23.5 total points + assists + rebounds. Over the last six games, only Luka Doncic (33) averages more points than Brunson (17). Over that period, Brunson has averaged 3.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game along with a usage rate of 20.2%. Over the last six games, the Warriors have given up 116 points per 100 possessions. — Moody

Fantasy Streamer: Dorian Finney-Smith (available in 83.2% of leagues) has quietly become a key contributor since Kristaps Porzingis was traded. In his past five games, he’s averaging 13.0 PPG (61.5 FG%, 53.8 3P%), 6.0 RPG, 2.8 3PG, 1.2 APG, 0.8 SPG and 0.6 BPG in 35.2 MPG. He’s flirted with a points/rebounds double-double in both of his last two games, going for 14 and 9 against the Warriors and 16 and 9 against the Lakers. — Snellings

Line: Spurs (-6.5)
Moneyline: Spurs (-270), Kings (+220)
Total: 238 points
BPI Projected Total: 224 points
BPI Win%: Spurs (71.4%)

Key players ruled out: Romeo Langford

Notable: The Spurs play their first game of the month tonight and are looking to snap out of a home funk: 2-5 ATS in their past seven.

Best bet: Dejounte Murray over 40.5 points+ assists + rebounds. Murray has an excellent opportunity to bounce back against the Kings, after the Spurs were blown out by the Grizzlies Monday night. You should build your DFS rosters around Murray because he has the highest ceiling of any player on the slate tonight against a Sacramento team that ranks 29th in points allowed per 100 possessions. — Moody

Line: Clippers (-2.5)
Moneyline: Clippers (-145), Lakers (+125)
Total: 218.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 210.5 points
BPI Win%: Clippers (64.2%)

Key players ruled out: none

Questionable: LeBron James (knee)

Notable: The Lakers have failed to cover three straight games and have seen four in-a-row go under the total.

Analytics Edge

BPI highest projected totals

1. San Antonio Spurs (115 points)
2. Atlanta Hawks (114.3 points)
3. Dallas Mavericks (113.4 points)

BPI lowest projected totals

1. Detroit Pistons (102.4 points)
2. Los Angeles Lakers (103.3 points)
3. Brooklyn Nets (106.1 points)

BPI top probability to win (straight up)

1. Toronto Raptors (72.8%)
2. San Antonio Spurs (71.4%)
3. LA Clippers (64.2%)

Kyle Davidson knows that the Blackhawks need a rebuildVincent Pariseon March 3, 2022 at 5:22 pm

Earlier this week, the Chicago Blackhawks announced that they are simply removing the interim tag from Kyle Davidson so that he can become the new permanent General Manager of the team. It is a great honor for him but there is a tremendous amount of work to be done.

This came after a lengthy interview process. Chicago made all of their nominees very public along with the advisors that helped them make the decision. After all of that, they still believed that Davidson was the man for the job.

He gave a press conference after the announcement was made and he had a lot of interesting things to say. However, the most notable thing that came out of it was that he believes this team needs a rebuild. He is spot on.

Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are getting up there in hockey age, Alex DeBrincat is going to get a major pay increase after next year, and Seth Jones’ prime is going to be wasted while making nine million a year.

A new era starts today ? pic.twitter.com/MRuJoODfVE

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) March 2, 2022

The Chicago Blackhawks need to rebuild in order to have success again.

With issues like that looming, there is no other choice but to rebuild if you want to get back to sustained success. Clearly, adding one star goalie and one star defenseman isn’t enough to get this team into the playoffs, let alone be Stanley Cup contenders.

There are some ways you can start the rebuild properly if you are Kyle Davidson in this new role. There are players like Marc-Andre Fleury, Brandon Hagel, Dominik Kubalik, and Calvin de Haan to consider trading for picks and prospects which could help them a lot in the future.

It is going to be painful. There are going to be years a lot worse than this one (on the ice) for the Chicago Blackhawks if Davidson sticks to this rebuilding plan but it will be so worth it in the long run.

Stan Bowman said he would rebuild and then made a bunch of “win now” moves which set the team back even further. Davidson, however, seems to have a good grasp on that fact and what he can do to make it better going forward. Hopefully, the moves that he makes for this team are ones that help them get back to contender status over the next five years.

Chicago Cubs: Ed Howard ready to shine after strong finish to 2021Ryan Sikeson March 3, 2022 at 4:42 pm

Drafted 16th overall in the 2020 MLB draft, Chicago Cubs prospect Ed Howard was met with no minor league season to jump into amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Evergreen Park, Illinois native made his highly-anticipated debut for Low-A Myrtle Beach in early May last year, but he didn’t exactly come out firing. The shortstop hit just .208 in his first month to go along with 25 strikeouts in 53 at-bats.

Added, he missed nearly a month midseason with a hamstring injury and when he returned, Howard hit just .108 to finish out June.

He’s one of many young faces at Cubs minicamp in Mesa, Arizona, in preparation for the minor league season.

“I’ve been growing, I’ve been learning so much for it. When I look back on my last year, I’m grateful for it. I learned so much, and it’s making me the person that I’m becoming. I look back on it, and it’s just keep pushing forward,” Howard said of his first minor league season.

July saw Howard make incremental steps in the right direction, reducing his strikeout rate while hitting one home run to go along with eight RBIs. Still, he batted just .216.

Once the calendar flipped to August, the Cubs’ shortstop prospect flipped a switch as well, hitting .250 with two home runs and 15 RBIs in 80 at-bats. And in the final month of the season, he hit .283.

Ed Howard is going to be a great player for the Chicago Cubs in the future.

For some guys, the ball just sounds different coming off the bat. Like #Cubs Ed Howard, who is making lots of loud contact during BP: pic.twitter.com/R841LxhwFC

— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) February 26, 2022

“I got the experience under my belt,” the Cubs No. 7 prospect said at minicamp. “I know what it’s like. This offseason, I made adjustments for what I needed to work on, and next year I’ll go out there and play and do what I do.”

The Cubs’ championship core of Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, and Kris Bryant all exited at the trade deadline last season. That said, the Cubs farm system has continued to get national recognition after being re-stocked with fruitful prospects.

Along with recent draft picks, including Howard, Caleb Kilian, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Kevin Alcantara have taken the farm system from a bottom feeder to mid-level in one year’s time. Baseball America also pegged the Cubs as one of five farm systems that could rise this season.

Howard is probably a good candidate to begin the season in Myrtle Beach but if the end of last season was any indication, he could advance quickly through the Cubs’ system. MLB Pipeline projects the 20-year-old to be ready sometime in 2024.

5 Chicago Bears offensive line targets to watch at 2022 NFL CombineRyan Heckmanon March 3, 2022 at 2:30 pm

Chicago Bears (Photo by Nic Antaya/Getty Images)

These next few days are going to be vital for the future of the Chicago Bears. General manager Ryan Poles and his guys are in person to watch the 2022 NFL Combine go down, and plenty of draft targets will present themselves.

The Bears are going to need a lot of help throughout free agency and within the draft, but Poles has a challenge ahead with the latter. Only five draft picks are available for Poles to work with — and none in the first round.

This week, one of the biggest areas of need will have a lot of potential hit the field during the Combine. The offensive linemen hit the field tomorrow, and there may be no more important position for Poles to watch.

The Bears’ offensive line is going to look much different in 2022 than it did last year, and if Poles plays his cards right, he could end up with a couple of strong rookies up front.

At the 2022 NFL Combine, the Chicago Bears will need to look out for a few select offensive line targets.

Teven Jenkins and Larry Borom are the only sure things up front right now, therefore the entire interior of the line could be up for grabs.

Poles could opt to cut Cody Whitehair in order to save some cash, or keep him on as a starter at either guard or center. If Whitehair is kept, then it makes things a bit easier.

Still, the Bears would need two interior starters this offseason. Could they both come from the draft? If Poles had his way, that’s certainly possible. Protecting Justin Fields for the long-term is priority number one, followed closely by getting him some playmakers.

If any of the following five interior linemen have a solid Combine performance, look for the Bears to target them next month in the draft.

Suns’ Booker enters health and safety protocolson March 3, 2022 at 3:15 am

All-Star guard Devin Booker has entered the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocol and will miss the Phoenix Suns‘ game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

The Suns made the announcement at the team’s shootaround.

Booker is a three-time All-Star and the team’s leading scorer, averaging 25.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. The 25-year-old’s absence is another blow to the Suns, who are also missing fellow All-Star guard Chris Paul.

Paul broke his thumb Feb. 16 and could miss the rest of the regular season, though the team is hopeful he will return before the playoffs. The Suns have lost two of three games without Paul.

Phoenix has the best record in the NBA at 49-12 and is trying to claim the top spot in the Western Conference playoff race. The Suns have a 6 1/2 -game lead over the Golden State Warriors with about 20 games left in the regular season.

Booker previously entered the protocols this season in September and missed media day and the start of training camp.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Teme Ring

I’ve been a comedy fan since age four when Moe Howard asked me, “What’s your name, lil’ goil?” Fortuitously somehow by way of Washington, D.C., Poughkeepsie and Jerusalem, I ended up in Chicago, the comedy Mecca of the world where comedians are kind enough to give me their time and where I was lucky enough to meet the great Dobie Maxwell who introduced me to the scene. You can reach me at: [email protected]. (Please remember the “w” there in the middle.)
I am often very reasonably asked, “How DO you pronounce that?” The spelling is Teme, but it’s pronounced Temmy.

Explore, kill, or be killed in Cogwheel Software and Daedalic Entertainment’s Hidden Deep!

Explore, kill, or be killed in Cogwheel Software and Daedalic Entertainment’s Hidden Deep!

You are exploring a empty (at least you THINK it’s empty) mine 100’s of miles under the water. Should be simple right? Well it is…until the evil scary creatures come out to kill you!

Cogwheel Software and Daedalic Entertainment’s Hidden Deep is a horror, atmospheric exploration game. You play as different workers exploring the mine and fighting off horrible creatures. You start out with a grappling hook and a gun, then eventually get more fun tools and even vehicles to maneuver.

Hidden Deep is very scary and thrilling game. Creatures of all horrible sorts will attack you as you explore, and they are not happy you are there. The deaths are rather gruesome as well.

Hidden Deep is not only scary as hell, but it is HARD as hell! Even on easy mode! The main reason is that everything can kill you. If you fall too far, dead, monster attacking you? Kill it or you are dead. Walk into a spot you can’t get out of? Well guess what the only way to get out is? Yup, death. And what makes all that even harder is the fact that you have limited lives and limited bullets as well – though you can find more if you pick the correct route. Extra bullets are few and far between so you need to use your bullets (and lives) sparingly, but that is not easy when there are horrible creatures attacking you and there is no chance to escape!

The only reconciliation is that it is rather hilarious when you fall from a high height and bounce bloody off the ground! Oh, and the blood stays where you died too, so that helps you know where you’ve been. “Have I been in this spot already? Oh yeah, there is my blood spot!”

Hidden Deep is also a huge maze which fortunately comes with a map that generates as you walk. Generated maps are always a good thing. There are also different modes such as story mode that is -as the name says – the main quest. Then there are specific quests like getting to a certain point or finding items in randomly generated levels.

I liked the grainy/ basic art style of Hidden Deep, it makes the game a bit more scary, especially when you see a creature suddenly grow or leap out of the ground at you! It also makes your graphic violent death that much better.

The main issue I had with Hidden Deep is that it was just too hard. I even set the game on “easy” and I still ran out of bullets very quickly and had no chance to survive. It’s nice that when you die you regenerate right where you left off, but you have limited lives! Then when those lives are up, you have to start over. I wasn’t even able to get far enough to play with the cool other tools. The best strategy I suppose would be to learn from our mistakes and start again, maybe take a different path. But I feel that if a game has difficulty level settings, then the “easy” mode should reflect “easy” and save the challenging rage inducing stuff for the harder levels.

So it is a nicely made game that has some fun features, it’s super scary and a bit silly at times. But because of the difficulty and because I think people who don’t mind the challenge will enjoy this game, I give it 3 out of 5 baby dragons.

Hidden Deep is available on Steam now for $24.99, but’s currently 25% off so grab it soon! More details here https://store.steampowered.com/app/976890/Hidden_Deep/, Have fun and don’t get killed!
