Durant tops 25,000 points, still ‘confident’ in Netson March 6, 2022 at 11:40 pm

BOSTON — Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant became just the 23rd player in NBA history to hit the 25,000-point mark during Sunday’s 126-120 loss to the Boston Celtics. Durant, who finished with a team-high 37 points, offered an honest assessment of his latest record after the game.

“It’s pretty cool,” Durant said. “I should be at 30 [thousand] right now, to be honest. But it’s cool, it’s cool to reach that milestone and be amongst the greats and I just got to keep pushing and keep going and see where I end up.”

Durant would be much closer to the 30,000 mark had it not been for a torn right Achilles suffered in Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals that cost him the entire 2019-2020 season and a variety of different injuries that have piled up in recent years, including a sprained left MCL that cost him a month and a half of this season. Durant joins Los Angeles Lakers forwards LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony as the only active players in the 25,000 point club.

“Kevin’s incredible,” Nets coach Steve Nash said. “I could sit here for an hour talking about Kevin Durant. And the ability, the sacrifices, the resilience, the passion for the game. That’s what you see out there; obviously someone that has gifts, but someone who has worked to master and refine those gifts endlessly. And he’s come back from some big injuries and continued to play at an equally high level every single time. He’s well into his 30s here — that’s an impressive, impressive resume and it’s because of all the work on top of the gifts he has.”

Durant became the seventh fastest member to join the club — hitting the mark in his 922nd game. That puts him behind six legends of the sport: Wilt Chamberlain (691), Michael Jordan (782), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (889), LeBron James (915), Oscar Robertson (917) and Jerry West (920).

When asked about Durant’s latest accomplishment, Nets guard Kyrie Irving dropped the microphone he was holding in his postgame press conference in order to clap for Durant for a few moments.

“I told him in the locker room, 25 thousand points, you’re a savant,” Irving said. “You are an artist. You have clipped history. And will forever be remembered as a legend in our game. And he’s been doing it since he was 19 and there’s a level of admiration I have for my best friend right there and he just does it in ways that makes it look easy. And even when he takes six weeks off, it looks like he hasn’t missed any time. And that level of work ethic that he puts in, it shows why he’s as great as he is.

“And for me, it motivates me to continue to get my game up and hopefully when I’m done with my career I could be sitting next to him and having 25 thousand as well and look back and we just crack jokes on a few championships that we won together. So that’s the goal at hand.”

Durant’s record was the only bright spot on the day for a Nets team that has now lost 17 of its last 20. Despite the losses, Durant remains confident that his team, now 32-33 and in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, can still turn things around with 17 games left in the regular season.

“Concerned and worried, those words, it’s easy to do that,” Durant said. “It’s easy to be concerned, it’s easy to be worried, it’s easy to be pissed off and mad. It’s easy to do that. We can point fingers and blame our season on other things, but let’s just go play. We got another game. We got 17 more and let’s see what happens at the end of them. We just take it a day at a time, man. A day at a time, and I’m confident in this group.”

Randle fined for shoving referee, Suns’ Johnsonon March 6, 2022 at 9:49 pm

Knicks forward Julius Randle was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Sunday for shoving Phoenix Suns forward Cameron Johnson, making contact with a referee who was trying to break up the altercation and refusing to participate in its ensuing investigation.

Randle and Johnson were both called for technical fouls after bumping chests and exchanging words in the third quarter of a wild 115-114 victory by the Suns over the Knicks on Friday night. A referee separated the two, but then Randle barreled through the ref to shove Johnson again, which earned the ejection.

Johnson responded with a brilliant fourth quarter, banking in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to finish with a career-high 38 points. His ninth 3-pointer in 12 tries came from 31 feet at the top of the key, capping a 21-point fourth quarter that included six 3s.

The Knicks looked like they were headed for an impressive road win before Randle’s ill-timed outburst late in the third quarter sent him to the locker room. Instead, New York blew a 14-point lead in Randle’s absence and dropped its seventh straight game.

I moved to Chicago from the south suburbs in 1986. I have diverse interests, but I love writing about what I’m interested in. Whether it’s a personal interest or part of my career, the correct words to get the idea across are important to me. I love words and languages — French and Scottish words enrich my American English. My career has included years as a journalist and years working in museums, and the two phases were united by telling stories. I’m serious about words and stories. So here I am, ready to tell stories about words and their languages.

Signs of Spring

Signs of Spring

I’m not the only one looking for signs of spring. The Chicago Sun-Times did a Readers’ Poll the other day, asking readers what are some signs of spring for them in Chicago.

Not surprisingly, potholes were high on the list, along with shorts and hoodies. Trash after the snow melts. Robins returning. Also, 60’s highs followed by a blizzard.

Here are some more signs of spring to me —

lines of geese flying north!

the first crocuses and daffodils

dandelions

mud

buds on the branches

buds on the branches, and baseball on the radio—at least, this was a sure sign of spring for me. Sadly, no shouts of Play Ball and Spring Training this year–but on the first warm day, with highs in the 60’s like Saturday, kids were playing catch with a baseball in the street. Baseball blooms again, and anyone can play!

3 reasonable trade packages for Amari Cooper to the Chicago BearsRyan Heckmanon March 6, 2022 at 1:00 pm

Chicago Bears (Photo by Rey Del Rio/Getty Images)

The next few days are going to be highly entertaining across the NFL. Before we see any free agent deals become official, the Chicago Bears, among other teams, could be active within an intriguing trade market.

Right now, one of the biggest headlines that directly impacts the Bears and the rest of the NFC North, is where Aaron Rodgers will end up.

However, another big name in the NFC could soon be on the move.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Dallas Cowboys are likely to move on from star wide receiver Amari Cooper, whether it be via trade or a simple release.

From NFL Now: The #Cowboys will try to trade WR Amari Cooper, and they’ve had discussions with receiver-needy teams. If not, they’ll move on and try to keep their own FA WRs. pic.twitter.com/ROHQU8DLoc

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 4, 2022

If Amari Cooper is available, the Chicago Bears would be smart to go after him.

Cooper is in the middle of a 5-year, $100 million contract and is set to make $22 million this coming season. With three years still remaining on his deal, Cooper could be cut and the Cowboys would only be out $6 million in dead cap.

This offseason, one of the Bears’ biggest needs is at the wide receiver position. Darnell Mooney is the number one, as for now, but would serve much better as the team’s number two option.

Cooper would be the perfect fit, as he does his best work in the middle of the field. He’s a fantastic route runner who can make moves after the catch and gain additional yardage.

Franchise quarterback Justin Fields is at the forefront of the Bears’ goals this offseason, and general manager Ryan Poles certainly wants to get him some weapons, along with protection up front.

Should the trade market for Cooper heat up, Chicago must absolutely do what they can to land him. However, at what cost? There are three particular deals that make sense for both sides, and all are fairly reasonable options for Chicago and Dallas.

Beer on the Wall, 106 Main St., Park Ridge, IL 312-720-3732  Map
The BotW Bottle Share has returned! Bring a commercially packaged (sorry, no homebrews) limited/seasonal/out-of-market beer with you, and be ready to share it with others in exchange for samples of their limited/seasonal/out-of-market beer. For example:
Good ideas: Heady Topper, Dark Lord, Side Project anything, Lost Abbey Isabelle Proximus (Izzy).
Bad idea: That beer you bought off our shelves 5 minutes before the event started.
Even worse idea: That beer you bought off the shelves at that big box liquor store a couple weeks ago (at least buy it local, jeez)!
Some other logistic notes:
1. Bottle shares will be held every second Monday from 6-9pm. They will be outdoors when possible and will be held at Off the Wall in the event of inclement weather.
2. If you’re planning to attend, please post what you’re bringing on the event page so we can limit duplicates and potentially build verticals/themes.
3. In the interest of time, we will only enter 1-2 beers per person in the official share. Folks are welcome to bring more but excess beers will only be opened after the formal part of the share is complete.
4. Attendees do not need a ticket to attend, though we may introduce limits later in the interest of space.
5. In the interest of organization and alcoholic liability, BotW staff will collect bottles at the start of the event and open/pour bottles in an orderly fashion. If you are overserved, BotW staff reserves the right to cut you off at any time–NO EXCEPTIONS.
6. When at all possible, please bring two beers of smaller format bottles so folks aren’t getting 0.65 oz of beer.
7. No scoffing or disrespect to other beer drinkers. Scoffers will be sent home with a 6pk of expired Hamms.

6:00 – 9:00 pm • Lake Effect – Pipeworks ‘10 Year Storm’ Wine Barrel Aged Wild Biere de Garde Release and Cheese
Beermiscuous, 2812 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago 773-698-6824 Map
This beer commemorates the shared 10-year history of Lake Effect and Pipeworks; and ‘Storm’ is the general feeling we have running our businesses. Biere de Garde is a style originally from Northern France (near the Belgium border), and is characterized as a relatively strong ale – similar to Belgian Dubbel – with hints of spice, a robust malt character, and a slight presence of alcohol. We took the additional step of aging it in Cabernet barrels for 9 months with a blend of brettanomyces yeast strains. This process imparts a lovely oaked character, with tannin, notes of fruit, and a mildly wild character of ripe fruit and clove; all this while being extremely drinkable – you might want another glass. As part of your drinking experience, we will have a few select cheeses (while supplies last) to pair with this delicious ale and further enhance your sensory experience. Owner Clint Bautz of Lake Effect and Owner Gerrit Lewis of Pipeworks will be there to hang out and talk beer. We look forward to seeing you!
Free to attend; draft beer for purchase with cheese tasting. Cans also available for purchase to-go.

6:30 – 8:30 pm • Ozark Trivia

Get 5 in a row and win a prize! In between rounds, there will be penny pours, good music and even better times. Must be 21+ to play.

WNBA Star Brittney Griner detained in Moscow since February

WNBA Star Brittney Griner detained in Moscow since February

WNBA star Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia on suspicion of illegally bringing drugs into the country after she was searched at the airport and found with hash oil in her luggage, according to Russian news agency Tass. This story is just breaking NOW and with the horrors occurring with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the United States’ tenuous relationship with Russia – it is a very frightening situation for Griner, her family and U.S. teammates from the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.

The report states that Griner was stopped by customs control at Sheremetyevo International Airport in February upon arrival in Moscow from New York when a service dog reacted to the presence of drugs. The two-time Olympic gold medalist’s luggage was searched and run through X-ray equipment, and vape cartridges of liquid cannabis oil were found.

“We are aware of and are closely monitoring the situation with Brittney Griner in Russia,” the Phoenix Mercury said in a statement. “We remain in constant contact with her family, her representation, the WNBA and NBA. We love and support Brittney and at this time our main concern is her safety, physical and mental health, and her safe return home.”

The timing of the arrest was unclear, beyond that it happened last month. Meanwhile, the State Department issued an advisory not to travel to Russia in response to the “unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces in Ukraine” and the possible “harassment against U.S. citizens by Russian government security officials.” The department added that U.S. citizens should leave Russia immediately and that the embassy had “limited ability to assist U.S. citizens.”

All other WNBA players are out of Russia and Ukraine, according to a WNBA spokesperson. Several prominent WNBA stars are on the rosters of Russian teams, including Breanna Stewart, Courtney Vandersloot of our Chicago Sky team, Jonquel Jones, Natasha Howard and Arike Ogunbowale.

“USA Basketball is aware of and closely monitoring the legal situation facing Brittney Griner in Russia,” the organization said in a statement. “Brittney has always handled herself with the utmost professionalism during her long tenure with USA Basketball and her safety and well-being are our primary concerns.” The WNBA said in its own statement, “Brittney Griner has the WNBA’s full support and our main priority is her swift and safe return to the United States.”

Griner is listed on the roster for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia and has played on the team for seven seasons. She is a seven-time WNBA all-star after being the No. 1 overall pick in 2013 and is one of the world’s most recognizable women’s basketball players.

Sadly, many WNBA players spend the off-season playing overseas to supplement WNBA salaries that are not competitive with those of their male counterparts. Griner is set to have a base salary of $227,900 with the Mercury for the 2022 season.

“We are aware of the situation in Russia concerning one of our members, Brittney Griner,” the Women’s National Basketball Players Association said in a statement. “Our utmost concern is BG’s safety and well-being. On behalf of The 144, we send our love and support. We will continue to closely monitor and look forward to her return to the U.S.”

As mentioned, this is a breaking story and it was noted that if Griner is convicted of a “drug” charge, she could face 10 years in a Russian prison. The fear is that with the ongoing invasion into Ukraine and the limitations of anyone from the U.S. being able to directly assist her, this could be a worst case scenario for the WNBA star.

I will provide updates when more news becomes available on this breaking story…

Finally, Singer-Songwriter Barbara Acklin is Getting the Recognition She is Due.

Finally, Singer-Songwriter Barbara Acklin is Getting the Recognition She is Due.

Brunswick Records is honoring Barbara Acklin “The First Lady of Brunswick” for her contribution to music and “Chicago Soul.”

Barbara Acklin

Many people remember Barbara Acklin for her songs “Love Makes a Woman,” and “Am I The Same Girl.” As well as so many others.  You may not have known that she was a singer, songwriter, engineer, and arranger.  In the ’60s and ’70s that was a major accomplishment for a woman.  Usually, women were pushed to the back and not taken seriously.

While working as a receptionist at Brunswick Records, recording star Jackie Wilson came in and Barbara pitched a song to him called “Whispers Getting Louder.”  I recently spoke with Barbara’s daughter Samotta Acklin, who is also a singer/songwriter, and she told the story the way her mom told it to her.

Samotta Acklin

“According to my mother, what happened was she was writing, and he asked her what this was that she was writing. And she told him, and eventually, I think someone else took the song to him to listen to it. And he loved it. And he recorded it, either the next day or that same day, I can’t recall what she said. But one of those, it was very soon after he heard the song. She sang it for him, for Jackie Wilson and he went to the label and told them that she could really sing and should be recording.”

Samotta went on to tell me that a lot of times Barbara was pushed in the background and people didn’t know that she was doing a lot of the writing for groups like The Chi-Lites. She and Eugene Record wrote “Have You Seen Her, Stoned Out of My Mind” (R&B no. 2, 1973), “Toby” (R&B no. 7, 1974), and “Too Good to Be Forgotten.” She also wrote for Peaches and Herb and many of the Brunswick artists.  She recorded amazing duets with Gene Chandler.

“My mother was a very strong woman. She had to be in that element. I’ll tell you the gentlemen around her at Brunswick were very protective of her as well. So, they would look out for each other. They named her “The First Lady,” so they had to look out for her.”

Barbara Acklin was a true businesswoman and made sure she got credit for the writing, arranging, and engineering she did on the songs. She is one of the few artists that is still receiving royalty checks for the work she created.

Paul Tarnopol, president, and co-owner of Brunswick Record Corporation said, “Barbara Acklin is a history maker. This industry honor is long overdue. With this recognition, Barbara’s contributions will be forever cemented in music history. She was one of the most prolific singer-songwriters of our time, and we are pleased that Brunswick was instrumental in her success.”

After reading about Barbara Acklin and speaking with her daughter Samotta I realized that Barbara was more than “Love Makes a Woman.” She was the woman that made the spirit of love.

I asked Samotta what advice her mom gave her as she entered the world of the music business. “My mother used to call it the booty business because it stinks. One of her famous terms that she used to use, was “Don’t believe the hype.” Because it’s important that you stay grounded in this industry. Now, of course, that’s across the board, whatever you do. But if you will start believing the hype you will get lost. You’ll start believing that you’re the best. And you should feel like you’re the best but know that there is always somebody better.”

We Celebrate the accomplishments of Barbara Acklin, “The First Lady of Brunswick.”

Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!

Don’t be Mistaken, the New Hit Series Bel-Air Is Not All Laughs

Don’t be Mistaken, the New Hit Series Bel-Air Is Not All Laughs

The opening lyrics of The Fresh Prince are, “

Now, this is a story all about how

My life got flipped turned upside down

And I’d like to take a minute

Just sit right there

I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air

If you were like me, before I watched the new Bel-Air I was in the mindset that I was going to see a remake of the 1990 sitcom only updated.  It is not by any means a comedy; it is dark in places but very real in life experiences that the sitcom only touched on.

Trailer to Bel-Air

Jabari Banks plays the role of Will so well in his looks and mannerisms that you believe you are looking at Will Smith.  However, his interpretation of Will is different.  During the African American Film Critics (AAFCA) roundtable, Jabari explained his version of Will.

“I think my Will definitely has a shorter temper. He’s a very prideful young man. And I think we’ve seen that in the original, but we get to go a step deeper, and, in our reimagining, he’s very prideful and he doesn’t like his toes being stepped on. So, any chance that he gets to prove someone wrong, he will, and sometimes that gets him in trouble. And I think that differs from the original, I feel like Will was a very, very easygoing type of guy in the original, yeah. But he is a little different now, he got the thing going on, you know what I mean? So, pointing at the air, you know what I mean, knocking out thugs, knocking out white boys, you know what I mean? It’s crazy, it’s just crazy, Even knocking out his cousin.”

Jabari Banks as Will, Olly Sholotan as Carlton Banks

All of the characters are different from the sitcom.  Hilary, played by Coco Jones, is not the space-head we are used to.  She is a food influencer and is a great cook. “I think for me, I kind of started off with the wrong approach, assuming that they wanted Hillary to be similar to the OG version, but it just didn’t work with the script because she’s constantly striving for these specific goals and carving out her own path. So, I kind of had to bring my truth into Hillary to make her more relatable in a sense. Even though she comes from this upper echelon area, what she’s striving for is things that you can’t buy for yourself, you have to earn them. So really for me, I just approached it by making my journey of tenacity relate to Hillary’s journey of tenacity. And also keep in mind that what I’m doing is representing dark skin in a way that I needed when I was younger. So, who do I want these girls to see in me? I want them to see themselves.”

Coco Jones as Hilary Banks

Geoffrey (Jimmy Akingbola) is not a Butler, Jazz (Jordan L. Jones) is an entrepreneur, Carlton (Olly Sholotan) is one of the biggest changes of all. In fact, his change of character is disturbing to a lot of people.  Olly explains, “The main conversation we’ve had was, when looking at the original show, all of Carlton’s struggles, he was the butt of every joke. Every single struggle that he had was always [inaudible 00:06:29] from last. This idea that you have this little black kid that doesn’t quite know how to be black and then his cousin from Philly has to come in and teach them how to be black. It’s a funny concept on the surface, but with this show, we really try to explore the layers beneath that… And how does he search for survival in a world where he’s predominantly surrounded by white people, but he’s the blackest person that they know. But amongst the other black people, he’s the whitest people that they know. And I think that on top of dealing with anxiety, on top of dealing with how he sees success in the eyes of his father, that leads to a 16-year-old kid that’s in a pretty dark and rough place right now. But as the season goes on, I think he really grows and learns his place in the world. But I don’t want to say too much. I think it’s a beautiful, beautiful journey. And that’s what I was most interested in is his journey throughout the season.”

Olly Sholotan as Carlton Banks

Each character is interesting and not perfect or has all the answers. Don’t expect to see Carlton doing the silly dance or Geoffrey wearing an apron.

Jimmy Akingbola as Geoffrey and Adrian Holmes as Phillip Banks

I am addicted to the show and love the different twists and turns.  Seeing these people, this family finds their places in the various situations makes it interesting.  It may not be for everyone, it may even be disturbing, however, if you want to know the real story of how he became the Prince of Bel-Air this show is for you.

The AAFCA roundtable was a great way to hear from the actors’ mouths the way they approached the show and their characters.  To view the roundtable, visit https://aafca.com/aafca-roundtables/#

Bel-Air is streaming on Peacock with new episodes on Thursdays.

Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!

Lupus and skin care

Lupus and skin care

It is so important for those with lupus to pay attention to their skin care regimen. Because lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects internal and external organ systems, the skin can become compromised as well.

Men’s skin association with lupus is called discoid lupus. Potential or permanent damage may occur across the face (singer/songwriter Seal is one example). Then there’s the infamous butterfly rash women tend to have across the nose, resembling a butterfly.

We as a population should pay attention to our skin, not only when something happens to it. As a black woman in my 50s now I never knew how important it was to apply sunscreen on top of moisturizer when I went outdoors. I thought the natural melanin in my skin was a built-in sunscreen.

There are now many cases of black people getting skin cancer because of the lack of sunscreen. When it comes to using brands, the verdict is in for me: Olay Serums and Moisturizers, No7 Restore and Renew Serum and Moisturizer, and Fenty Beauty by Rihanna.

These items are sensitive enough to use alternatively but again use SPF to be on the safe side.

Sabrina Nixon

I’m an author and playwright of urban fiction, a mom of two boys with autism, and have lupus. I lived my formative years in the Cabrini-Green Housing Projects. I have an article about my thoughts of the demise of Cabrini-Green on Page Four of the Chicago RedEye titled “Eyesore yes, but public housing was our home” (April 2010) and a lupus article titled “Butterfly is more than some ink on my leg” (May 2010).
