Sources: Bulls get deal with veteran PG Dragicon July 3, 2022 at 8:48 pm

The Chicago Bulls have agreed to a one-year contract with veteran point guard Goran Dragic, sources confirmed to ESPN on Sunday.

The Brooklyn Nets won the Dragic sweepstakes last season, beating out the Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, LA Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks to sign the guard after his contract was bought out.

He ended up playing just 16 regular-season games for Brooklyn and struggled some after sitting out most of the season with the Toronto Raptors. However, Dragic found his form in the playoffs, averaging 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 56% from the field in just under 20 minutes per game.

The Athletic first reported news of Dragic’s agreement with the Bulls.

Dragic, 36, has a reputation for stepping up his game in the playoffs. He averaged 19 points per game for the Miami Heat during their run to the NBA Finals in 2020 before a plantar fasciitis injury sidelined him against the Lakers.

Entering his 15th NBA season, Dragic has career averages of 13.7 points and 4.8 assists while shooting 46% from the field and 36% from 3. He won the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award in 2013-14 and made his lone All-NBA team that same season.

ESPN’s Jamal Collier contributed to this report.

Breakfast At Its Best

Breakfast At Its Best

Moving a successful restaurant to a new location can be risky. And if you change a restaurant’s name in addition to moving it to a new location, it can be a recipe for disaster. But in the case of The Poached Egg, formerly Rhapsody, the move from Deerfield Commons to a larger space on Milwaukee Avenue in Riverwoods has been nothing but positive.

Ramon Abarca, who-with his wife Diana-owns The Poached Egg, says eighty to eighty-five percent of their customers followed them to the new location. So what accounts for their loyalty? According to Abarca, it’s the “little things.”

“From the start,” he says, “you want to make sure the customers have everything they need.”

With that in mind, the wait staff asks what you want to drink as soon as you’re seated. Request hot coffee and ice water, and a carafe of the first and a pitcher of the second are on the table in minutes. If, like me, you typically drink multiple cups of coffee at breakfast, easy access to refills is a definite plus. The coffee, by the way, is Intelligentsia, a premium brand that tastes like a premium brand.

And then there’s the service, which even on a busy Sunday morning, is both pleasant and attentive. Add another plus for ambiance and sufficient space between the tables. The first has always been important because it’s hard to converse when the noise level is high, while the second has become increasingly important since Covid.

Nowhere do the “little things” add up faster than with the food. According to Ramon, the restaurant’s top seller is the Cobb Salad with chicken. The chicken is marinated and cooked to order, so it adds flavor, as well as protein, to the dish.

All too often, an egg white omelet, has nothing to recommend it other than its low cholesterol count. That’s not the case, however, at The Poached Egg, where it’s listed on the menu as the Geneva Omelet.

The egg whites are well-seasoned, cooked, and then wrapped around a tasty mix of sautéed mushrooms, spinach and onions. Served topped with mozzarella cheese and a side of marinara sauce, the omelet is accompanied by fresh fruit and a toasted English muffin. FYI- this is a great dish, even if you’re not watching your cholesterol.

The crepes topped with fresh berries and a small side of yogurt are typically available on the weekend. There’re special, and so is The Poached Egg.

July 4th: Welcome to ‘Merica

July 4th: Welcome to ‘Merica

The featured image (above) is my proposal for our new flag because it’s time to ditch that old one. How many people even know how many stars or stripes it has or what any of it even means?

I may be one of the few people alive who still remember when they added stars number 49 and 50 (Alaska and Hawaii, respectively).

Anyway, all that is a bunch of crap and today is the perfect day to declare independence from our independence. The American experiment has failed and we’re going back to one man rule.

In case you haven’t noticed, the America you thought you knew is dead. It’s only a matter of accepting it and making funeral arrangements.

The new flag has all you need to know about the new ‘Merica.

First, and in no particular order is the mangling of the word America. Shortening it and drawling it out of the side of your mouth is the apparent essence of patriotism.

For those of you who always felt that southern accents betrayed a certain lack of intelligence, the new flag brings a new dawn.

We have to acknowledge that their lack of information and resistance to science, history and education is just as good as our factual knowledge.

Next time you see a guy in red hat with the mark of the Devil on it, driving a giant, gas-guzzling truck with a God, Guns & Trump flag waving in the back, show some respect.

What any of those three things have to do with America is beyond me, but, like any secret society, I’m just not privvy to that information.

Inexplicably, the pillars of our society are now a God in which all of us may not believe, guns, which have become a scourge in American cities and a man who wantonly pursues his own interests ahead of the health of the nation he once swore to defend.

And that’s only when he’s not pursuing the interests of the leader of a foreign, hostile nation.

The cross speaks for itself, or rather allows a road scholar like Lauren Boebert to speak for it. Boebert, who got pregnant in high school but was still able to achieve GED status by the tender age of 34 says that the church should control government.

She didn’t specify which church, but it may be the church of televangelist and billionaire charlatan, Kenneth Copeland, whose God told him he needed a $50 Million airplane. You never know with these people, their interpretation of God’s word is often very fluid.

Which brings us to the third symbol on the flag, the gun. That one may not actually speak for itself, but it doesn’t really need to with the NRA and GOP in its corner.

Ladies, if your vaginas were machine guns, they’d get all the protection that money could buy, and that includes unwavering support from our Supreme Court.

As you watch fireworks weekend, think of the giant strides we’ve made in our race to take America back…to the Nineteenth Century.

In just the last few weeks, our newly constructed Supreme Court, including three judges appointed by a man who tried to overthrow our government, two of whom he nominated illegitimately, managed to turn our country upside down.

They took the power to control firearms away from (Blue) states, but gave (Red) states the power to ban abortion. They green lighted prayer in public school and environmental destruction and provided public funding for private, religious schools.

One has to wonder about the honorariums and offshore accounts of six Right wing judges who ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency is not allowed to protect the environment.

One might also start wondering about the other rights and freedoms that might disappear under a minority regime of hypocrites who hide behind the false flag of liberty and freedom.

When they were warning us about the rise of sharia law in America, they just meant that it was the wrong religious rule that concerned them. Now that they’ve got control of SCOTUS, everything’s back on track.

I wish you one and all a safe, happy and healthy Fourth of July. We don’t have to worry about SCOTUS until next term, when they will decide that state legislatures can throw out the results of federal elections and decide for themselves whom their state wants to be president.

Welcome to the new ‘Merica.

Cubs’ Mills placed on 15-day IL with back injuryon July 3, 2022 at 4:07 pm

CHICAGOChicago Cubs pitcher Alec Mills left Saturday’s 3-1 win against the Boston Red Sox due to lower back pain after throwing just seven pitches.

The 30-year-old Mills (0-1, 9.87 ERA) struck out Jarren Duran and left after allowing a double to Rafael Devers.

Mark Leiter Jr. came in and struck out J.D. Martinez and got Xander Bogaerts to fly out, ending the inning.

“That was awesome,” Mills said. “What he did was special.”

Leiter Jr. (2-2) picked up the win, allowing three hits, striking out five and walking one in 5 1/3 innings.

“It was nice to feel that emotion,” said Leiter Jr., who exited to an ovation from the crowd. “Proud of being able to kind of hold us where we were and not have to run through other guys and really use a lot of arms.”

Mills was activated June 7 from the 60-day injured list for a right quadriceps strain. He said the pain he felt on Saturday is “a very similar feeling” to his previous injury, and he will see how he recovers.

“The pitch to Duran on the strikeout was when I initially felt a little bit of something,” Mills said. “It didn’t get any better, thought maybe I could get through it.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Words worth defending: stare decisis

Words worth defending: stare decisis

Source: pdclipart.org

After Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe vs. Wade, I kept hearing mentions of an unfamiliar term, stare decisis.

I had to look it up, but as usual, that’s a signal to me that a word or term needs defending — it needs to get out in the sun and get some use. Stare decisis is just such a term. Thus, I looked it up so you won’t have to.

Google’s definition, provided by Oxford Languages, is “the legal principle of determining points in litigation according to precedent.”

Precedent. Most of the country remembers that, if six people in Washington, D.C., don’t.

No wonder editorial commenters are saying that stare decisis is threatened by the Dobbs decision — and the EPA decision, and the promise of others to come.

I’ve read or heard in several places that Chief Justice John Roberts is an incrementalist, which Merriam-Webster defines as “a policy or advocacy of a policy of political or social change by degrees.” I could be wrong, but it doesn’t look like he had much influence over Dobbs.

Granted, if something is obviously unconstitutional to a majority of people, it deserves overturning. But stare decisis means “to stand by things decided” in Latin. The exception is when “they contravene the ordinary principles of justice,” according to Merriam-Webster.

There is arguing ahead, some of it on First Amendment grounds since the protected “free exercise of religion” means that some religious groups disagree with the limits the states are now allowed to impose according to Dobbs.

Let’s hope that stare decisis still holds in First Amendment cases, or we’re sunk.

My career has included years as a journalist and years working in museums, and the two phases were united by telling stories. I’m serious about words and stories. Former Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton has a new teamVincent Pariseon July 2, 2022 at 5:20 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks have not been a good team for a few years now. Luckily, with Kyle Davidson as the new general manager in place of Stan Bowman, it seems as if they are going to rebuild and get this team back on track.

In order to do so, they needed a new head coach. They got that guy with Luke Richardson who has a pretty impressive resume for a first-time head coach. He replaced Derek King who was the interim head coach for most of the 2021-22 season.

The reason they needed King to do that job is because of the fact that they needed to fire Jeremy Colliton within the first month of the season. The Hawks got off to a bad start and Colliton just clearly wasn’t the guy for this roster as currently constructed.

Colliton took a lot of heat and most of it was well deserved. He didn’t really ever make system adjustments and his style just didn’t fit what they were doing. He needed to go because his time to shine is down the road instead of now.

Former Chicago Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton has a new hockey home.

He is clearly someone that knows the game and earned a head coach thing job at a young age. That means that with a little bit more experience and wisdom, he could become a good NHL coach one day later in life.

Jeremy took that next step by landing himself a new pro hockey home as a head coach. He is going to be the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks’ AHL squad, the Abbotsford Cancuks. He will replace Trent Cull who is going to be a part of the NHL squad’s assistant coach staff.

This is an outstanding idea for Colliton. He is still going to have an impressive job in the AHL so he can build up more momentum toward being an NHL coach. He already has great experience and he isn’t even 40 years old yet. Most NHL head coaches are a good 20 years older than that.

As mentioned before, expect Colliton to be in the NHL again in the future. He is a bright man that knows his hockey. He had to have learned a lot during his time with Chicago and all of this will serve him well.

Independence Week in Chicago Beer, July 4-7

Independence Week in Chicago Beer, July 4-7

Indeed there once was a “light” version of this cheapest of beers. The next best thing to “Dry January.”

We have an inadvertent “Monday Holiday” again. Since many places tend to close on Mondays, I’m trying to highlight spots that are open. I’ll be adding to the list below as I hear more.

Some behind the scenes info: The coordinator of the ChicagoNow portal, Matty Schwer, was abruptly let go by the Tribune Co. this week. We were told that there would be some word on what will happen to “CN” going forward, but nothing yet. In the meanwhile, the front page headlines have not been updated all week. If it comes down to the site being closed down, I have some backup plans in place, but we may be out of communication for a few days. Yes, I would have to cough up some dough to be hosted on another provider, but there would be a lot less ads (I’m only allowed on Google ad, the one in the upper right corner). And you’d no longer have to see that pop-up about “Jenny McCarthy’s Son’s Friends’ Boners.”
