The Chicago Bears are once again heading into an offseason with a question mark at quarterback.

The continuous inconsistency at the position has been the demise for the Bears for a decade, and this year was no different.

Initially, there was light at the end of the tunnel with the addition of former Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles. This was thought to be a move that would push four year starter Mitchell Trubisky to the next level and finally find their answer at quarterback. So we thought.

The juggling act between Trubisky, and newly acquired Foles was laughable. Head Coach and player caller, Matt Nagy, seemed to have trust issues at the position with the short leash on Trubisky despite winning the first two games of the season.

Foles won that week 3 game in which Trubisky was pulled, but ultimately led the team to a 2-5 record in his seven starts. After switching back to Trubisky in Week 12, it was starting to look like Foles was another failed project by Bears GM Ryan Pace.

The good news is, the 2020 season is over and it is time to move on. With ownership giving Pace and Nagy one more shot at this thing, lets look at three very realistic options that can take the Bears to the next level.

The Chicago Bears will undoubtedly be looking for a quarterback in the next few months.

But, where will they turn? The fact that the front office kept general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy around has to mean the team is moving on from Mitchell Trubisky, as the relationship between he and Nagy has seemed to sour.

Without Trubisky in Chicago, the Bears have veteran Nick Foles under contract through 2022, but he will likely serve as either a backup or a bridge. He’s not the long-term answer — and Pace needs to find that long-term answer in a hurry if he’s to stick around for much longer than 2021.

Going into the offseason, Pace could opt to try for a free agent as he did a few years ago with Mike Glennon. Some of the top names available will be Dak Prescott, Jacoby Brissett, Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jameis Winston.

Only one of those guys could be looked at as the long-term solution, and he’d require the Bears to slash a ton of salary to make it work. So, free agency may not be the way to go.

Now, the draft on the other hand, is where things get interesting. The Bears dug themselves a hole in draft positioning by winning three of their last four games and sneaking into the playoffs, and they’ll pick at no. 20 overall in a couple of months.

The possibility of a trade-up is always there, but how many other teams will they have to compete with in attempting the same? If they’re lucky, they may only have four or five teams thinking quarterback in the first round. But, that likely won’t be the case. The Bears could have as many as nine or even 10 teams thinking about taking a quarterback — which means we may see five go in the first round.

Recent quarterback moves could tell us a little, or a lot, about some teams’ future plans when it comes to quarterback. A few, in particular, could impact the Bears. Let’s start with a possible future Hall of Fame gunslinger hanging up the cleats.

They are now asking U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall to put Nicholas Stella behind bars, alleging he “has a history of violent assaults upon his domestic partner.”

Federal prosecutors allege a Chicago police officer charged last year in a sports gambling case that also led to charges against Casey Urlacher “violently assaulted his girlfriend” Saturday.

They are now asking U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall to put Nicholas Stella behind bars, alleging he “has a history of violent assaults upon his domestic partner.” Stella’s lawyer, Michael Clancy, did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment Thursday.

Stella’s status with the Chicago Police Department is “inactive,” according to Sgt. Rocco Alioto, a CPD spokesman. A hearing on the allegations against Stella is set for Wednesday, court records show.

Stella was among 10 people charged in the gambling case last year. Also among them was Casey Urlacher, mayor of north suburban Mettawa and brother of Chicago Bears great Brian Urlacher. In the final hours of his presidency Tuesday, Donald Trump pardoned Casey Urlacher.

But Stella still faces charges in the case. And Assistant U.S. Attorney Terry Kinney wrote in a filing Thursday that Stella’s girlfriend reported “that he tried to kill her, attempted to strangle her, hit her in the face, tore her blouse and stole her phone so she could not call 911, and then dragged her down the hallway before finally releasing her and fleeing.”

Kinney’s filing indicates the assault took place at a Crowne Plaza hotel. It said a hotel guest called the front desk to report something “horrible” was happening. And though Stella’s girlfriend apparently called 911, Kinney wrote that she has since decided not to pursue charges.

“However, Stella has a history of violence against his domestic partner,” Kinney wrote, adding that she “doubtless fears retribution were she to bring charges.” He also wrote that Stella did not turn himself in even though he knew police were looking for him.

Jaylen Saulsberry, 19, was taken into custody Tuesday at O’Hare International Airport after being extradited from Pennsylvania, where he was arrested earlier this month on a separate warrant, Chicago police said.

The fourth and final suspect in the December killing of retired firefighter Dwain Williams — who was fatally shot in a botched carjacking in December — has been extradited to Chicago and charged with murder.

Jaylen Saulsberry, 19, was taken into custody Tuesday at O’Hare International Airport after being extradited from Pennsylvania, where he was arrested earlier this month on a separate warrant, Chicago police said.

“We hope the hard work of our detectives and law enforcement partners brings justice for the Williams family,” Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said Thursday night on Twitter.

Prosecutors have said the last suspect sought by police was the second gunman in the incident, which unfolded Dec. 3 outside the Let’s Get Poppin’ popcorn store at 11758 S. Western Ave. in Morgan Park.

Two teenagers and a 20-year-old man have already been charged.

The defendants were allegedly part of a carjacking crew believed to be responsible for other crimes in the area, police said previously.

Williams was shot in the abdomen after exchanging gunfire with his attackers. He was a concealed-carry holder who retired from the Fire Department two years ago, officials said.

He was planning to return to work as a civilian employee at the Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

Saulsberry is due in bond court Friday.
