No matter their age differences or experiences, they join millions of Americans remembering where they were and what they were doing when they learned of the unfolding events of Sept. 11, 2001.

The four Illinois FCS head football coaches share their recollections on the 20th anniversary of that fateful day that shook and changed America. The following is their stories in their words.

Jared Elliott, Western Illinois

“I was in a science class. I still remember our teacher leaving the room and then coming back in and telling us what had happened. He turned on the TV in the room and we sat in the classroom and watched it that morning. Gosh, that will never leave anybody (who saw it). I remember watching all of the horror and emotions that everyone was dealing with on that day as it unfolded in front of our eyes.

“One of the things I’ll always remember is our teacher’s body language, his demeanor, his facial expressions when he walked back in the room. Things like that you never forget.

“You’re listening to it. You’re watching it. There’s the shock of is this really happening? Is this real? That’s what I remember. It was gut-wrenching and horrifying to watch, but I think I was in shock like so many of my other classmates. It was just dead silent. Everyone was just trying to process it.

“We did up playing (our football game) that week. I don’t remember who we played, whether we were home or away, whether we won or lost, but I do know we played. We did not take the week off, but obviously it was an emotional week for everyone.

“As you get older and time goes on, the biggest thing I remember is how it unified our country. The things that we sometimes take for granted, and in that moment as a young (sophomore) in high school and that I really didn’t process at the time how grateful that we all need to be for the men and women that protect and serve our country. For how fragile life is on a day-to-day basis.

“Those are things as you get older and you have your own family, your own children, that you start to realize. You hear the stories of what people went through on that day, many people went to work and never came home. How people’s lives changed forever. Families that had to move on with lost loved ones. Those are the things as you get older that you start to understand. Those are the things for me now that are the things you never want to take for granted — the bond of our loved ones and the appreciation that I have for our country and how we came together through that really rough time. And of course, the brave men and women, so many heroes.

Nick Hill, Southern Illinois

“I remember walking into art class with Mr. Craft, Coach Craft was my teacher. He had a TV up in the corner.

“I remember scrambling around, trying to get to school on time so I didn’t really see anything before I got to school, but I had art (class) first. I can remember who was in my class vividly.

“I remember that we played Anna-Jonesboro that coming week in our football game. I can remember taking the moment of silence and all the things surrounding that.

“It’s crazy to think that it’s been 20 years and that much time has passed. As far as playing in a game ( now), we’ll talk about it this week. We talk about it a lot, to be privileged to play this game. Those are the times you’ve got to just be really thankful for playing a sport. We’re going out to play a game.

“Ultimately you’re playing because you enjoy doing it. It’s fun. I’m coaching in a football game; we’re not in war or some of the things that the people who have sacrificed so we can live in a free country and play football games. We’ll have a team that definitely goes out on the field and is appreciative and understands the sacrifices that some people have made so we can play sports, play football.”

Adam Cushing, Eastern Illinois

“It was my senior year in college. I was in the athletic training room (on that) Tuesday morning getting my body right for the game that weekend when everything broke.

“We were one of the few teams that actually played that weekend. That part of it has always been special to me to say that we still went on and played.

“The terror that was inflicted upon the country, the attack that was inflicted upon the country. Certainly we had to heal from it, but some of that healing comes from saying, ‘you can’t intimidate us and that we’re going to go do what we do’. Coincidentally we won the game too on a pretty big play late.

“It’s really burned into my memory, coinciding with football. Football’s my life and that whole thing.”

“It’s something that we’re going to talk (as a team) about throughout the week. How fortunate we are to be doing what we’re doing. Obviously with everything that’s gone on overseas the last couple of weeks and all that. It’s the ability to put things in perspective is really what I think the honor of that day is and how many people have sacrificed for us to play this wonderful game and have these relationships with other human beings on this football team (and) in this locker room. You have to use their incredible memory; that’s how I believe you honor all those soldiers and all those people that passed on that day.”

Brock Spack, Illinois State

“I know exactly where I was. I can see it vividly, very clear 20 years later. I was in the (Purdue) defensive staff room watching Notre Dame tape. Our secretary came in and said that a plane had crashed into one of the towers in New York City. We turned the TV on and saw the second plane hit and knew something was up. It was very chaotic the rest of the day.

“I remember just being stunned, angry. Our players were angry. Some of them were from the East Coast. I had a kid named Niko Koutouvides, who was from Connecticut. His brother worked downtown in Manhattan. The brother was very close to the towers and Niko couldn’t get ahold of him. He (Niko) was panicked. I said, ‘Niko, there’s no phone service, it’s going to be very difficult to get to him. I’m sure he’s going to be okay.’ Niko called me about nine o’clock that night and told me his brother was safe.

“I know a lot out people out there that lost firefighters and police officers. My mother-in-law is originally from Brooklyn; later in life she lived on Long Island. She had family there and was very concerned.

“Our game with Notre Dame was cancelled and later played in December. The next week we had a home game against Ball State. All of the sideline grass trim was red, white and blue.

“I think about how divided we are right now (as a nation) and how close we became back then from this tragedy. People from different walks of life were helping each other. We were all American, and we were all going to stand up for each other. We weren’t going to let this happen again. We weren’t going to let them (terrorists) get us down. That was what was the positive about it; people rallied behind being American across all socioeconomic and racial barriers. Everybody lost somebody. That was a common bond.

“My daughter (Alicia) was in middle school and my son (Brent) was in grade school; they’re six years apart. Brent kind of remembers it; my daughter definitely remembers it. She’s 33 years old, and Brent’s 27 now. I remember thinking how am I going to explain this to them? It all seems so senseless. Those were tough days. Those were hard days, but nothing like what the people had to do at Ground Zero.

“But it’s about toughness and resiliency. I’m proud to be an American. It was amazing to see people reaching out and helping one another. People who never thought of themselves as heroes became heroes.”

Southern Illinois steps up in class with a Saturday game against Kansas State, a member of the Big 12 Conference, but don’t tell Salukis head coach Nick Hill it’s just one of those FCS at FBS matchups for a money guarantee.

“It’s a great opponent. Anytime you play a Power 5 opponent, there’s the obvious things. (They’re) supposed to have more depth, more scholarships, all that kind of stuff,” Hill said during Monday’s Zoom media address.

“We’ve been here before. This is our sixth season; we’ve always played FBS schools. This one is as good as anyone we’ve played,” Hill added. “Our team will be really excited for the opportunity to play well. This is a veteran (SIU) group . . . it’s not going to be wide-eyed, let’s look at this bigger stadium and how cool it is to play. I think we have a team that’s going to have high expectations.”

According to SIU’s official athletic website, 19 of the 104 players on the SIU roster are seniors. Of those, 17 are sixth-year seniors and two are fifth-year seniors.

The Salukis (1-0) are ranked No. 8 in this week’s STATS FCS poll. Kansas State (1-0) opened its season with a 24-7 victory over Stanford.

“It’s about going and executing and playing well and that’s going to be our (approach) as a coaching staff as well,” Hill said. “We won’t treat this game any differently. We’ll put together the best plan we can to execute and go out and play at a high level.”

Salukis versus the Big 12

 SIU and Kansas State have never met in football. The Salukis have played only two Big 12 teams all-time and are 0-4 in those games.

SIU is 0-3 against Kansas and 0-1 versus Oklahoma State. SIU’s last game with a Big 12 team was a 42-0 loss at Kansas in 2000.

Baker’s big day

Saluki quarterback Nic Baker was chosen as Missouri Valley Football Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week following SIU’s 47-21 triumph at Southeast Missouri State in the opener for both teams.

Baker set the school record with 460 passing yards. The sophomore from downstate Rochester improved to 4-0 as a starter at SIU by completing 25-of-34 passes with four touchdowns and one interception.

His first pass of the game went for a school-record 99 yards to former high school teammate Avante Cox. Nine different players caught passes and four different players caught touchdowns from Baker.

Scouting Kansas State

The Wildcats ran for 200 yards while holding the Stanford offense to just 39 yards on the ground. It was the fewest rushing yards allowed by a K-State defense since allowing 31 yards to Texas Tech in 2018, and the fewest in a non-conference Power 5 matchup since allowing 17 rushing yards to Arizona State in the 2002 Holiday Bowl.

Quarterback Skylar Thompson ranks in the top 10 in school history in 15 career categories. He had two rushing touchdowns against Stanford to give him 24 in his career, which ranks fourth in K-State history among quarterbacks.

Defensively, Kansas State rotated nearly 10 players along the defensive front against Stanford; linebackers Daniel Green and Cody Fletchercombined for 17 tackles and a sack.

Payday

According to published reports, Southern Illinois will receive a $450,000 guarantee from Kansas State for the matchup.

Southern Illinois plays at Kansas State Saturday. Kickoff is 6 p.m. It will be televised on ESPN+ and the Big 12 Now and broadcast on the Saluki Radio Network.

It was early on a Tuesday morning, and my routine was to get up early on Tuesday mornings to put the finishing touches on my weekly column in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin before emailing it to my editor. He needed time to look it over before it was time to print and deliver the paper to lawyers’ offices and courthouses all over the Chicago area that afternoon.

The difference on the Tuesday morning of September 11, 20 years ago, was that my good friend Wendy was staying with me.  I’d separated from my husband, and she from her long-time boyfriend several weeks before and I invited Wendy to move in until she found a place of her own in the neighborhood—which she did, and we’ve been neighbors ever since.

Wendy liked getting up really early and watching The Today Show while relaxing and drinking coffee in my family room recliner.  And that’s where she was that morning.   As I sat across the room working on my column.

And then it happened.  “Look, a plane hit a building in New York,” she said.  I walked over to get a better look at the TV.  I figured it was a private plane with a pilot who was sick, maybe having a stroke or a dizzy spell or a stomach ache or some such.  And I said something very prescient:  “Life will never be the same.”  

I figured a wayward private pilot making a mistake like this and hitting the World Trade Center sure would change private aviation in the country and we’d never be the same because of it.

Little did I know. 

And then the rest happened.

And life was never the same.  

We watched all the horror.  I called my editor and I asked if the paper was going to come out that afternoon.  “Are you sure you want to run the column, after what’s just happened?” I asked.  My column was known to be rather wry; I reported on social events that lawyers and judges went to and I made light fun of it all. And I got into a little trouble now and then.  

He said the paper would come out, and my column would run.  And to send it over.  And it might even come out early because everyone was leaving downtown as we spoke.  

And boy, were they leaving downtown.  CTA and Metra were packed to the gills.  With very nervous people, they explained on the news.  People were scurrying away and heading home in every direction.  Heading back to where they’d started that morning, so crowded that it would all go down in history.

Wendy sat in the recliner and called a close friend in New York who lived not too far from the Word Trade Center and I got on the phone, too, and we grilled her about what it was like—like the air, was it filled with dust?  (Yes, and so was her house.)  Were people scurrying home like they were in downtown Chicago?  (Yes, and they were covered in dust, too.)

And then I said another weird thing:  “I bet the Iraqis did it.”  

Why did I say that?  Why did that slip out so easily?  My mother said later that day that she read in the paper about a month before that this was going to happen and that it had been in an intelligence report.

She was right.  A big newspaper saver, I went though some old ones and found the small article buried in the news section.   

And at some point I figured out that warmonger Dick Cheney knew this would likely happen, and he’d have a great excuse to turn it into an opportunity to get at the greatest oil reserve left in the world.  And I figured he was probably sending subliminal messages via his news conferences and newspaper interviews about the Iraqis being terrorists.  And I must have picked up on it subliminally.  I satisfied myself with that explanation when we went to Iraq two years later to avenge what happened that day.

Then Wendy got a call from her bank.  They had been wanting her to come in and straighten out a signature related to a safe deposit box.  Something minor, and she’d been putting it off. Did she want to come in now? 

I told her to go. “There’s no traffic, no one will be at the bank, you’ll get this whole errand off your mind real quick,” I said. “Just go.”

“But,” she said….

But she went.  And she was glad when she got back in no time.  No cars on the street, no people at the bank.  The errand was off her mind just as I’d predicted.

Then my soon to be ex-husband came by to visit our daughter. He was mesmerized by the course of the day.  When he left, he was as pale as when he arrived.

One of his jobs was photographer for the CDLB (sometimes he was assigned to take pictures to accompany my column) and he’d had to get his work over there earlier that day, too.  And we talked about how creepy it was that the everyday fruits of our labor would be appearing momentarily on the street just like nothing ever happened.  

When he left, my neighbor from down the street, my good friend Susan, a psychiatrist came over.

Susan was often invited to what we called “drug dinners” that her husband didn’t like to go to with her—so she would always invite me.  These were very fancy dinners in very fancy places paid for by drug companies that wanted psychiatrists to be prescribing their psychotropic drugs for their patients.  Over a lot of great food, they would give a talk about some technical subject regarding mental illnesses  and their treatments, which I, the possessor of two degrees in public health, always enjoyed very much.

We had one scheduled that night and she’d heard from the drug company and they were going through with it.   And because many people couldn’t get to town or back to town in time to attend due to all the the transportation problems caused by grounded planes, they told her to bring any other guests she wanted.  So she invited Wendy to go with us.

And off we went. 

It was at a downtown hotel and there was a much smaller crowd than usual—but that gave everyone a chance to talk a bit more intimately with others while eating dinner.  We heard a lot of stories about how people they knew were stranded all over the country and they felt so lucky that they weren’t. 

The compulsory lecture was brief as it was apparent no one was able to concentrate.  Or care.   

There was so much extra food that they gave us a lot to take home, which was very fortunate under the circumstances.  We were glad to take provisions because who knew what would be available in the stores? Or if they’d be open.

The three of us had walked to the dinner and we also walked back, a couple of miles each way.  And we all agreed we’d never seen the city or the sky so dark. And quiet.

There was no one on the street except us.  We were shocked at the complete lack of sound downtown, exclaiming that we never realized how much light and noise was provided by regular air traffic across the sky.  We’d taken it for granted and gotten used to it all these years.

As we carried our food home–steaks, salads, vegetables, desserts–in our bags, we made small talk about how dead, and how ethereal the streets were, wondering how long this darkness would last. 

We had no idea.

And we still don’t. 

On September 11, 2001 Todd Beamer died saving the Capitol. On January 6, 2021 Donnie Trump called for its destruction.

Did Donnie complete the mission of the 9/11 hijackers? You be the judge.

On September 11, 2001, Todd Beamer of Cranbury, New Jersey boarded United Airlines Flight 93 in Newark for a one day trip to San Francisco.

Beamer died a hero that day, as Flight 93 terminated in a fireball in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing 32 other passengers, seven crew members and four al Qaeda hijackers. Beamer was just two months short of his 33rd birthday.

Beamer, an account manager at New Jersey software company Oracle, led a counter-attack against the hijackers that day preventing them from reaching their intended target, the Capitol. By that time, passengers aboard Flight 93 were already aware that two planes hit the World Trade Center and a third hit the Pentagon.

The general consensus is that Flight 93 was heading for the Capitol or the White House, the former being the more logical and vulnerable of the two with a higher probability of significant casualties.

Lisa Jefferson, a customer service supervisor for Verizon Airfone heard Todd Beamer’s final words. Addressing fellow passengers that included Jeffery Glick, 31, Thomas Burnett Jr., 38 and Mark Bingham, 31, he said, Are you guys ready? Okay. Let’s roll.

And so began the assault that forced the hijackers into a fatal nose dive at almost 600 miles per hour.

Let’s roll. Two words that will be remembered.

Bravery and sacrifice. Two words that describe the heroes of Flight 93 on that fateful day.

Two words that can never be used to describe one single member of the Trump family. Not now, not ever.

In 2016 Donnie said that the only way he could lose is if the election was stolen from him, planting the seeds of doubt in the fertile ground of anger, resentment and isolation.

Four years later, Donnie was back at it, only this time he did lose and he need a Big Lie to perpetuate the idea that someone was stealing something from him.

Even worse, they were stealing it from a group whose only information came from the man peddling the lie and his Right wing propaganda machine.

Yes, TucKKKer, I’m calling you a liar. Sue me.

Donnie’s drum beat crescendoed on January 6, 2021 where he told his amped up minions that he would lead them down to the Capitol and they needed to fight like Hell.

His exact words were, …if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.

There’s about 195 countries in the world. The fortunes of many of those countries have risen and fallen over time, but the people still had their countries.

What Donnie and the lying liars of Fox mean when they repeatedly tell us that we’re not going to have a country anymore has yet to be fully explained.

Not surprisingly, Donnie lied. He did not lead anyone anywhere, except back to his media room where he could watch and laugh as the match that he struck ignited a raging wildfire.

Much damage was done to the Capitol, although it was all repairable. 140 law enforcement officers defending the Capitol were injured, some seriously, some permanently. One died.

Severely traumatized, at least four officers committed suicide in the weeks and months that followed.

Members of the press were attacked and equipment destroyed. This MUST be recognized as a foreseeable consequence of Trump’s incessant attacks on the media and a harbinger of autocracy.

Somehow, only one (White) member of the violent mob attacking police officers was killed by law enforcement.

Make no mistake, though. Had members of Congress been killed, as was planned by the mob, or hundreds of the insurrectionists killed and the building completely destroyed, Donnie would have been a happy man.

His deliberate, criminal negligence at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and his war against science prove that he has no regard for American lives, especially when it conflicts with his own personal interests.

A few hundred more deaths would just be part of the body count.

So, twenty years after al-Qaeda failed to rain terror on the Capitol, Donnie succeeded. Not only did he succeed, but his campaign is organizing and funding a rally to show support for the terrorists next week.

Somehow, we went from loving and supporting our first responders to loving and supporting our home grown terrorists who beat our first responders with flag poles.

Did Donnie complete the mission of the 9/11 hijackers? Maybe we should ask Kevin McCarthy.

Gallery + Tattoo Art Show and Fundraiser for Afghan Refugees. Wayward Arts Gallery + Tattoo will host a fundraiser for Refugee One, the Muslim Women’s Support Network, and World Relief Chicago, who are all working hard to support new families that will be resettling in Chicago throughout the year. In addition to some amazing art work by both established, emerging, and student artists, there will be authentic, home-cooked Afghan foods and tea for guests to enjoy.

KOVAL Outdoor Movie Night + Big Teeth’s Small Shorts Film Festival. Join Big Teeth at KOVAL (4241 N. Ravenswood) for an exclusive, outdoor screening of more than 40 short films (each under 5 minutes), ranging in genre and medium, all while enjoying spirits under the stars. The one-night-only “Best of Big Teeth” show will be comprised of favorite shorts from past 60-Second Film Festivals as well as favorites from the Big Teeth Small Shorts Film Fest.  Purchase tickets here, $30.
