What’s New

The Recent Chicago Bulls All-StarsNed Fon November 29, 2021 at 5:17 pm

The NBA All-Star game offers something exciting for fans to enjoy each February, away from the thrill of their own team.

For NBA teams, it presents a chance for some national recognition of their players, with the biggest basketball names coming together in a spectacle everyone can enjoy. In the All-Star game, there are no real losers, and basketball is the winner.

The Bulls have a tradition when it comes to the All-Star game, not least because of Michael Jordan. He appeared in every game between 1985 and 1993, returning for three years between 1996 and 1998. He is perhaps the most famous of all the Bulls All-Star players, having a persona the world over. After he returned from his second retirement, he even played twice more, although this time with the Washington Wizards. A CBS article on his return reports he was 39 when he appeared in his final All-Star game.

In recent years, the Bulls have provided a handful of All-Stars. Whether they will for the game this February is up for discussion; a Bwin Sports piece on the All-Star game reveals they’ve provided 11 players over the last ten years, the eighth highest from across the divisions. Will that be 12? Possibly, Zach LaVine played last year, and who knows if this time out, we’ll see a Bulls player on the court.

LaVine is where we begin our roundup of the other Bulls All-Stars from the last few years.

Zach LaVine

The Minnesota Timberwolves selected LaVine with the 13th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, focusing on his long-term potential rather than immediate impact. His time with the UCLA Bruins had marked him out as one for the future, and he certainly delivered. He was traded to the Bulls in exchange for Jimmy Butler and the rights to Justin Patton in 2017. By 2020/21, he was on fire, averaging career highs in scoring and shooting efficiency, which led to him being picked as a reserve for the All-Star game. He played just over 28 minutes, scoring 13 points, and could well be in contention this season.

Jimmy Butler

Butler was drafted with the 30th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft by the Bulls and achieved three All-Star picks with them in 2015, 2016 and 2017. His record with the Bulls was impressive; he was named the 2014–15 NBA Most Improved Player and picked as a reserve for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star Game. He was picked for the 2016 game, dropped out because of injury, and was finally named a starter in 2017. He’s since appeared twice more in the exhibition event, once as a Timberwolves player and once whilst representing his current team, Miami Heat.

Pau Gasol

Spanish player Gasol benefited from Butler’s 2016 injury; he was called up to the All-Star team to replace his teammate. He was no stranger to the game, having represented the Grizzlies in 2006 and the Lakers on three occasions between 2009 and 2011. His spell with the Bulls brought two more All-Star outings, but not the coveted NBA Championship, which he won twice with the Lakers. Gasol is now back in his homeland, representing FC Barcelona on the court, where his career started in 1998.

Insider suggests Chicago Cubs should go after Carlos CorreaNed Fon December 6, 2021 at 1:00 pm

It will be a while before we see any transactions in Major League Baseball with the lockout but when that’s over, a flurry of moves could happen as free agency resumes. And one of those teams making a big splash could be the Chicago Cubs.

With the signing Marcus Stroman before the lockout, the Cubs addressed a need for their rotation. And now one MLB insider believes they should target the best bat on the market when things resume — Carlos Correa.

In his latest piece for The Athletic, Patrick Mooney writes on the Cubs situation and why they maybe could talk themselves into signing the talented shortstop to a mega deal:

Maybe Cubs officials will stare at the whiteboard long enough and talk themselves into signing Carlos Correa after Major League Baseball’s lockout. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer already pivoted, reacting to the fast pace of the free-agent market before Wednesday night’s deadline and closing a three-year, $71 million deal with Marcus Stroman before the collective bargaining agreement expired. Stroman even sent a recruiting message to the All-Star shortstop over Twitter: “Need you in Chicago my dawg!”

After three consecutive offseasons that felt like a transactions freeze, Cubs fans appreciated the reminder that their team is still rooted in a big city, an iconic stadium and an entertainment business. Stroman alone won’t transform the Cubs into a playoff contender, but his contract also won’t prevent Hoyer’s front office from continuing to make substantial improvements to a 91-loss team whenever MLB reopens for business.

With Correa, there are few doubts about the fit, the talent or the personality. Correa wowed Cubs officials during a pre-draft workout at Wrigley Field in 2012, leaving them with the impression that he would fall to them at No. 6 if the Astros didn’t select him with the first pick. Correa checks the boxes as a 27-year-old Gold Glove shortstop with a polished offensive approach and World Series experience (which comes with the asterisk of Houston’s sign-stealing scandal in 2017).

After moving on from Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez last season, the Cubs signaled a rebuild. But adding Stroman and Correa this year speeds the process up and gets interest back.

Now, will they do it? Just wait and see.

Air Jordan 3 “Fire Red” set to return in 2022Z Pon December 3, 2021 at 11:54 pm

With the year winding down, the focus for sneakerheads shifts to 2022 and the releases that are on tap. We still have the Air Jordan XI “Cool Grey” coming next week but news revealed this week has us excited for a release in 2022.

The only problem? It’s a long wait.

The Air Jordan III “Fire Red” will return in Fall of 2022 in it’s sleek white, red and black colorway, featuring Nike Air on the back. There’s limited information on the release as of right now but we can expect it to look very similar to the OG version.

The Air Jordan III first released in 1988 in four iconic colorways. In addition to the Fire Red, the shoe was dropped in a White Cement, Black Cement and True Blue colorways. It became an instant hit and has seen re-releases in new and classic colorways over the years.

Mobile Games You Can Fit Into Half TimeNed Fon December 3, 2021 at 11:25 pm

When it comes to basketball, that first half time is a pretty short one, twenty minutes to be precise. Although many might think that twenty minutes is such a small amount of time that you could just wait it out, we live in an age where we’ve been almost programmed to need to keep ourselves entertained. YouTube videos are shorter than television shows and TikTok clips are shorter still, we’ve got to keep our brains busy second to second. The good news is that there are plenty of games that cater to our laughably short attention spans.

 Wolf Gold

So if you want lots of options you can enjoy in the half time, we’ve got them. From arcade games such as chess, basketball games such as NBA 2K or you can even find Slots to Play for Real Money that will fit into those precious two minutes. However, the Wolf Gold slot might be popular among Bulls fans thanks to the majestic bison (cousin of the bull) that makes an appearance on the reels. The feel of this game is generally pretty all-American, so even if you don’t win, you’ll be feeling plenty patriotic enough for the second quarter. If you’ve never played slot games before then they’re generally really simple to pick up, but if you’re unsure then you can find tutorials online easily for this one, or spend a few cents working it out for yourself.

 NBA 2K Mobile

Although NBA 2K is an in-depth basketball game, so in-depth that it’s become a bonafide Esport, the mobile version is a lot more stripped back. For this game, you’ll want to have the basics all worked out before halftime, as for a lot of us, it can take half an hour or more to put a strong team together. However, once you’ve got your team set up and you know how the controls work, you can pick up and put down this game super easily. You’ll not be winning the league in two minutes, but you could get a whole game played at speed, or you could use the time to complete the daily task. Don’t forget, there’s another break coming up after this one, so you don’t have to finish what you started in the allotted two minutes!

 Chess

It can be easy to get so into the zone when you’re watching basketball that you forget how to think like a human. If you feel like switching your brain into thinking mode then a quick set of chess puzzles can be the perfect way to do it. There are tons of mobile chess apps to choose from, but look for one with a puzzle mode. These puzzles will put you right into the middle of a chess game and ask you to win it in a set number of moves. Not only does this save you loads of time, which as we’ve established is a priority, but it also gets you right into the good bit. Opening moves are for losers anyway, probably?

The Best Sports Teams from ChicagoNed Fon December 2, 2021 at 4:47 pm

Chicago, along with New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc. is one of those American cities which has been built up to a mythical status. With films, television shows, paintings, and poetry created, not just in the city, but about it, the Windy City has always been at the forefront of a lot of people’s minds when they think about the United States of America.

Apart from the art, the weather, and the pizza, Chicago is also known nationwide, for its widely successful sports teams, in different sports. Whether it be Basketball, Baseball, or Football, Chicago has produced some of the best teams on the national scene.

American Football: The Chicago Bears

American Football is without a doubt the most important American sport. At the very least, it is the most popular. In the States, American Football has hundreds of millions of fans, placing it in the top 10 most popular sports worldwide. The sport also has a very big betting culture, both online and offline. The demand for online betting has increased which has led to the creation of new betting sites at Helpbet

As for Chicago’s Football team, the Bears is one of the most popular football teams of all time, having won nine National Football League Championships, a Super Bowl. The team also holds the record for the most enshrinees in NFL’s Pro-Football Hall of Fame. The Bears have recorded the most victories in the NFL Franchise, making them one of, if not the best American Football team of all time.

Baseball: White Sox and Cubs

In the sphere of baseball, Chicago has produced not just one, but two of the biggest teams in the sport. The White Sox and the Cubs have had a long-standing rivalry, competing for the title of “Chicago’s Best”. The Cubs were founded in the 1870s, and their career has now spanned across three centuries. They have had a storied career, setting and breaking records. Winning and losing to their rivals, the White Sox, and consistently competing for the title of Chicago’s Best.

The White Sox team was founded in 1900, under the name White Stockings. Later shortened to the much more iconic White Sox, the team today is one of the most popular, and accomplished teams on the American Baseball scene. The White Sox have an overall record of 9.411-9.309 (.503).

The Cubs and White Sox hold the record for longest and second-longest MLB Championship drought respectively, with the Cubs’ drought lasting 107 years, and the Sox’ lasting 87.

Basketball: The Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls is one of the biggest NBA teams, and the team which led to the NBA being popularized worldwide. In the 1990s, the Chicago Bulls had their biggest success, sporting some of the greatest players in the game, like Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan. During the ’95-’96 season, the Bulls won seventy-two games, an NBA record which stood for 20 years, until the Golden State Warriors broke it in the 2015-16 season.

Jussie Smollett takes the stand in his defenseAndy Grimmon December 7, 2021 at 12:08 am

Flanked by family members, supporters, attorneys and bodyguards, former “Empire” star Jussie Smollett walks into the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Monday. | Ashlee Rezin/Sun-Times

Smollett’s testimony would seem essential to proving the defense theory of the case as the actor stands trial on a second indictment brought by a special grand jury following a year-long investigation of the attack and State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office.

Jussie Smollett took the witness stand Monday, spending some six hours fielding questions from his attorney and parrying questions from Special Prosecutor Dan Webb about the hoax hate crime attack the former “Empire” star allegedly plotted as a publicity stunt.

Smollett was poised and at times indignant as Webb tried to cast the star’s refusal to hand over his cellphone and medical records to police after the attack as proof Smollett was afraid they’d uncover that he’d coordinated the attack with a pair of accomplices who would become star witnesses for the prosecution.

Smollett spent around four hours answering questions from his lead attorney before the start of cross-examination by Webb, who led off asking the actor whether he wanted police to conduct a thorough investigation of the crime, despite refusing to turn over medical and phone records.

“I wanted the police to solve a crime that had been committed against me,” Smollett said.

Questioned by his attorney, Nene Uche, Smollett said he saw light, pale skin around the eyes of his attacker, who was masked, and assumed the person was white because the person used a racial slur and mentioned “MAGA country.”

Smollett said he never told police the men wore red hats, and an apparently leaked comment from Chicago Police that he had convinced him that police didn’t believe him.

The actor said “not one iota of information has changed” regarding his explanation of the attack, which also involved a second individual, and he said it cost him his livelihood.

Smollett’s testimony is key to defusing key bits of circumstantial evidence that prosecutors have used to buttress a case that leans largely on testimony from brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, who testified last week that Smollett masterminded the attack because he was disappointed with the “Empire” studio’s response to a hate mail letter sent to the actor in 2019.

Smollett said he was far from unhappy with his career in the winter of 2019. His star was on the rise, his salary had nearly tripled and his music career was taking off by the fourth season of the show. Smollett said “Empire” creator Lee Daniels described the actor’s role as groundbreaking.

“You have to be for gay Black men what Phylicia Rashad was for Black women on ‘The Cosby Show,'” Smollett told jurors.

But that year, Smollett also became friends with Abimbola Osundairo, an extra on “Empire,” and received a threatening letter. Prosecutors allege Smollett hired Osundairo and his brother to fake a hate crime attack as a publicity stunt.

But Monday, former “Empire” show-runner Brett Mahoney testified that after receiving the letter, Smollett declined added security on the set and at home, and the actor also did not want the media to know about the hate mail.

“It was Jussie’s choice, that he didn’t want that letter publicized,” Mahoney said.

Smollett’s time on the stand marked his first extensive public remarks on the case against him since the former “Empire” actor read a statement as he left the Leighton Criminal Courthouse in March 2019. That followed a hearing at which the Cook County state’s attorney dropped all charges just weeks after he was indicted.

Some three years ago, Smollett proclaimed his innocence to a throng of reporters, saying, “I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one. … I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I’d been accused of.”

Smollett’s testimony would seem essential to proving the defense theory of the case as the actor stands trial on a second indictment brought by a special grand jury after a yearlong investigation of the attack and State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office.

Smollett’s lawyers have cast the actor as an unwitting victim, betrayed by his onetime friend-turned-star prosecution witness Abimbola Osundairo and Osundairo’s older brother, Olabinjo.

The brothers testified that Smollett hired them to beat him up in view of a surveillance camera, even scripting homophobic and racist slurs he wanted them to yell, with the intention of putting the video on social media as a publicity stunt.

It was on Smollett to flesh out the defense’s explanations for several pieces of circumstantial evidence as well. Smollett testified that they often smoked marijuana and drove around Chicago, composing songs, a likely explanation for why GPS data and surveillance footage showed Smollett circling his neighborhood near the attack scene days before it took place.

After a “rehearsal” a few days before the attack, Smollett gave Abimbola Osundairo, who had worked as his personal trainer, a $3,500 check, which the brothers said was payment for participating in the hoax. Smollett said the payment was for a workout and diet plan so he could drop 30 pounds before going shirtless in a music video and to get back in the good graces of show creator Daniels.

“Lee Daniels told me I was fat, and I had to leave 30 pounds before I came back on set,” Smollett said.

Smollett is also expected to testify that Abimbola Osundairo requested a seven-figure payoff — either $1 million or $2 million, according to Smollett’s lawyers — to publicly admit Smollett was not involved in the hoax or to refuse to testify against the actor.

Smollett’s lawyers have also said that Abimbola Osundairo suggested Smollett hire him as a bodyguard after the actor received a threatening letter after learning the “Empire” studio wanted him to take on security.

Ashlee Rezin/Sun-Times
Former federal prosecutor Dan Webb, who was appointed special prosecutor in the Jussie Smollett case, walks into the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Monday.

Smollett has told his story before, if not under oath. Not long before he was indicted, the actor gave a lengthy interview to ABC reporter Robin Roberts that aired on “Good Morning America.” Smollett recalled struggling with two men as he walked home from a 24-hour sandwich shop.

At times tearful and often indignant, Smollett then said he was “pissed off” by the large contingent who doubted his story in the weeks since he’d come forward — a group his lawyers have implied included Chicago police investigators working to find his attackers.

Smollett will have to explain a text he sent to Abimbola Osundairo shortly after learning from police that the brothers had been identified as his attackers, expressing support to a friend who had apparently beaten him up, put a noose over his head and doused him with bleach.

“I know 1000%. You and your brother did nothing wrong… I am making this statement so everyone else knows … Please hit me when they let you go. I am behind you fully,” the text said.

Under questioning from Smollett’s lawyers, who have tried to cast the Osundairos as homophobes who were using their connection to the openly gay star to advance their acting careers, Abimbola Osundairo admitted going to a gay bathhouse on several occasions, though he claimed he didn’t know the establishment catered to gay men.

Testimony has spanned five days so far, an exceptionally long trial for a defendant facing only low-level felonies. If he is found guilty, the actor would be eligible for a sentence of probation or one to three years behind bars.

Felon gets 3.5 years in prison for looting Old Navy, possessing gunManny Ramoson December 6, 2021 at 10:50 pm

Federal prosecutors say this still image from surveillance footage depicts Adam Walton (left) entering an Old Navy at Marshfield Plaza on May 31, 2020. | U.S. District Court records

An emotional Adam Walton, 41, stood before the court on Monday and apologized profusely to his family, the court and to police officers for his actions in May 2020.

A Chicago man was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for allegedly looting a South Side clothing store and illegally possessing a firearm as a felon during historic civil unrest and looting that reverberated throughout city neighborhoods last year.

The sentencing of Adam Walton, 41, is one of the harshest handed down in federal court for those charged in connection to looting or rioting.

U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis admonished Walton for making “really stupid decisions” and said it was difficult to find an appropriate sentence for him because of his extensive criminal history, which involves two previous gun and drug convictions.

Walton plead guilty in federal court in September.

Walton was accused of leaving a looted Old Navy in Marshfield Plaza at 117th Street and Marshfield Avenue around 11:45 p.m. on May 31, 2020. Prosecutors alleged he had spent more than two minutes in the store and had collected a “large armful of clothing.”

Police said Walton then ran to a parked Honda CR-V that was in front of the store but was unable to open the driver’s door, at which point he dropped the stolen items and ran through the parking lot, according to court documents.

Police officers looked inside the Honda CR-V and saw “large quantities” of additional stolen goods inside the vehicle, officials said. Walton allegedly returned to the car and told officers that he didn’t care about the stolen objects — he just wanted to retrieve his car and leave.

Walton would later tell an officer there was a gun inside the car, prosecutors said.

In September 2017, Walton was convicted for illegally possessing a firearm and sentenced to eight years in prison but was released on parole in June 2019. He was still on parole when he was caught looting.

An emotional Walton stood before the court on Monday and apologized profusely to his family, the court and to police officers for his actions — often taking deep breaths to compose himself. He said that night he wanted to express his discontent over the killing of George Floyd but realized it somehow morphed into something that had nothing to do with fighting for social justice.

“I got caught up in the madness,” Walton said. “There are no excuses I can come up with.”

Ellis agreed with Walton that the death of George Floyd was “profoundly disturbing” and reflected a broken society and a failed criminal justice system.

“But what’s not OK is to then take that anger and turn it on your own community,” Ellis said.

Ellis said she was also troubled by some of the obstructive actions Walton engaged in while he was awaiting trial. She said he had attempted to convince his ex-girlfriend to tell investigators that the gun found in the Honda CR-V was hers — putting her at risk of going to prison.

The judge went on to say his actions were “fundamentally selfish” and was shocked at his willingness to see his ex “rot in jail.”
