Colin Quinn hoping he’ll bring laughs to Chicago on latest tourBob Chiarito | Special to the Sun-Timeson December 14, 2021 at 1:30 am

Like many comedians of his generation, Quinn said he grew up idolizing Richard Pryor and George Carlin, both of whom he thinks would have a hard time connecting with audiences today.

Former “Saturday Night Live” star Colin Quinn believes his latest one-man show, “The Last Best Hope,” which comes to Chicago this week, offers a way for Chicagoans to laugh at “whatever’s left.”

Quinn, whose sarcastic view of society has been his trademark since delivering “Weekend Update” on SNL in the late 1990s, spoke to the Chicago Sun-Times from his home in New York, where he grew up and where the source of much of his comedy continues to come from.

Now 62, Quinn started as a gravelly voiced side announcer who often sang clues on MTV’s “Remote Control” in the 1980s. Since then, he worked as a writer and a cast member on SNL; been on various comedy television shows and movies such as “Trainwreck”; and has performed six other one-man shows.

Known for his sarcastic view of society, Quinn said “The Last Best Hope” is largely a continuation of previous shows “Unconstitutional” and “Red State Blue State.”

“I was hoping for some big breakthrough shift in another direction but no, it’s a continuation,” Quinn said, laughing at his self-deprecating comment.

Chicago is the second city on a 15-city tour after doing the show for most of November in New York, and the furthest west on this schedule — something he found funny.

“I’ll get west but it’s winter and I like to be in all the windy spots,” Quinn said, laughing. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me but there’s something wrong with me.”

Quinn, who said he always liked reading, grew to like history more as he grew older and incorporated it into his material.

“I didn’t realize history was so important [when he was younger] but even on ‘Remote Control,’ I’d do some Shakespeare stuff,” Quinn said. “I always liked that stuff but I never really understood the whole idea that nothing changes except for externals.”

Indeed, Quinn scours both the left and the right equally, and said neither is good at laughing at themselves, he muses.

“It seems like we’re living in a very hyper-tense atmosphere,” Quinn said. “Everything can be controversial to someone today. You try to be funny, number one. Outside of comedy, when comedians are talking they sound like everyone else. They become mortal again. So, being funny first and then trying to make sure people are comfortable is really impossible. Sometimes you’ll be surprised at what doesn’t offend people and sometimes you’re surprised at what does. I don’t like it, but it is reality.”

Like many comedians of his generation, Quinn said he grew up idolizing Richard Pryor and George Carlin, both of whom he thinks would have a hard time connecting with audiences today.

“I often think about what they would say, but they wouldn’t be the same people if they were coming up today.”

Quinn noted that it was Lenny Bruce years before, however, who paved the way for Carlin and Pryor to get away with their blue comedy.

“Lenny Bruce literally got arrested,” Quinn said, noting that the 1950s were even more obsessed with being proper than the current time.

The key for any comedian is to be funny first, Quinn said.

“People are definitely bucking against this politically correct thing but whether you are pandering to them or bucking against them, if it’s not funny, it’s not that interesting.”

He also blames social media for creating the current atmosphere of hyper-sensitivity.

“It’s become this weird world because of social media where 18 people will disapprove — one of whom was actually at your show and the rest who think you’re being serious.”

While Quinn thinks there may be less unique characters found in cities like New York and Chicago these days to inspire his work, he said some of his sarcasm about the old days may be romanticized.

“Maybe it’s looking through the rear-view mirror with rose-colored glasses, but it felt like there was a liveliness that’s not around anymore.

“… One of the funniest things about people in New York or Chicago is those people who were ready to go from zero to 100 at the drop of a hat. Like the guy who is like, ‘I’m sitting here watering my lawn but if this guy across the street looks at me again, I’m going to drop this hose and start fist-fighting’ — and you’d laugh because you can’t believe this old-school guy still has it in him.”

Bears’ Mario Edwards one of 37 NFL players to test positive for coronavirusPatrick Finleyon December 14, 2021 at 12:42 am

The Bears put the defensive end on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday. Edwards is unvaccinated, meaning that he must sit for 10 days — and miss Monday night’s game against the Vikings.

The NFL had 37 players test positive for COVID-19 on Monday. Mario Edwards Jr. was one of them.

The Bears put the defensive lineman on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday. Edwards is unvaccinated, meaning that he must sit for 10 days — and miss Monday night’s game against the Vikings.

More players tested positive Monday than tested positive between Nov. 14-27. According to NFL test result and vaccination data, 29 players tested positive during that two-week span.

The Bears were one of five teams put in enhanced league protocols, which requires daily testing and masking for all players, regardless of vaccination status, per ESPN. Teams must distance players during meetings and meals.

Edwards played 19 snaps Sunday night. He has 1 1/2 sacks this season, all in Week against the Browns. Edwards joins offensive tackle Elijah Wilkinson, who is also unvaccinated, on the list. Wilkinson was put on the list Nov. 26 and has yet to return to the active roster.

The NFL sent a memo to all teams late Monday requiring all Tier 1 and 2 personnel members — players, coaches and staffers — to receive a booster vaccine by Dec. 27.

As of Dec. 2, 94.4 percent of all NFL players — and nearly 100 percent of coaches and staff members — were vaccinated.

Fired Black educators reach $9.25M settlement with CPSNader Issaon December 13, 2021 at 11:54 pm

The CPS Board of Education is set to vote on a settlement Wednesday. | Sun-Times files

About 413 teachers and paraprofessionals may be eligible for compensation after CPS and the teachers union opted to end a decade-long dispute that was destined for a court trial.

Ending nearly a decade of litigation, Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union have reached a $9.25 million settlement over the layoffs of entire school staffs that disproportionately affected hundreds of Black educators on the South and West sides.

About 413 teachers and paraprofessionals may be eligible for compensation after the two sides opted to end the dispute that was destined for a court trial in at least one of two federal rights lawsuits.

The cases stemmed from several rounds of layoffs at 18 schools from 2012 to 2014 under a so-called “turnaround” policy which targeted schools that had been put on probation due to substandard test scores and attendance. Many of those schools were in Black communities, and an uneven number of Black educators lost their jobs. The teachers were directed to apply for new jobs at CPS, but not all were re-hired.

Racial diversity in the teaching ranks has been a source of strife ever since, with the district in the past couple years acknowledging and beginning to address the issue through various recruitment efforts, though barely a dent has been made.

Despite white students making up 10.9% of CPS’ enrollment this year, 48.8% of the district’s teachers are white. Meanwhile 35.8% of students are Black, compared to 20.7% of teachers. Latinos make up 46.7% of student enrollment yet only 22.3% of the teacher force.

In 2006, about 33% of CPS teachers were Black, according to an earlier ruling by Judge Sara Ellis who cleared one of the lawsuits for trial earlier this year.

The Board of Education is expected to vote on the settlement at its monthly meeting Wednesday. Then the board and union will present the agreement to the federal judge overseeing the lawsuit for approval.

“Resolving this matter is in CPS students’ best interest and will allow the district to move forward with its continued focus on providing a high quality education that is grounded in equity for students in every city neighborhood. As a District, we will continue efforts to recruit and retain a diverse faculty that reflects our student population,” CPS said in a statement.

The CTU said the agreement would allow “impacted teachers and staff [to] receive some compensation for the harm that was done to them,” adding the union has “fought for increased funding for schools, adequate staffing and fair treatment of all teachers, regardless of race.”

The district did not admit wrongdoing, and CTU and the affected teachers must drop their claims as a condition of the settlement. A different lawsuit with similar allegations stemming from a round of layoffs in 2011 was dismissed last year by a federal judge who found the sackings adversely affected the group of teachers, but not because of discriminatory practices by CPS.

The Board of Education will pay $1.7 million toward the settlement while the board’s insurance will cover the rest, officials said.

About $4 million of the settlement amount is set to go toward attorney fees and court costs, while the 413 teachers would split the remaining $5.25 million according to a court-approved formula that would determine each person’s share. The average plaintiff would receive about $12,700.

Chicago police investigate the scene where two people were shot outside of a Jewel-Osco Dec. 13, 2021, in West Elsdon. | Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times

A 54-year-old man was leaving the store about 5:10 p.m. in the 5300 block of South Pulaski road when he got into a fight with a male in the parking lot, Chicago police said.

Two people were shot at a Jewel-Osco parking lot in West Elsdon on the Southwest Side Monday afternoon.

A 54-year-old man was leaving the store about 5:10 p.m. in the 5300 block of South Pulaski road when he got into a fight with a male in the parking lot, Chicago police said.

The 54-year-old pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking the male in the head, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition.

The man suffered an injury to his hand and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, police said, adding that he has a valid concealed-carry license.

An employee, who asked not to be named, said he saw the two men fighting near the entrance to the store when one pulled out a gun and opened fire.

The man then was struck in the hand, possibly by his own firearm, “just shows he shouldn’t have a gun,” the employee said.

At the scene, workers moved around the parking lot collecting carts but the employee said the store was to remain closed for the rest of the night. Shoppers continued to show up but were turned away.

A sweatshirt and a baseball cap laid on the ground in front of the doors, near a trial of blood.

Area One detectives are investigating.

Former White Sox, Orioles GM Hemond dies at 92on December 14, 2021 at 12:14 am

Roland Hemond, whose 70-year career in baseball included three Executive of the Year awards as general manager of the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles, died Sunday night. He was 92.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, with whom he spent 19 seasons, announced Hemond’s death Monday.

“He passed peacefully in his son Jay’s arms,” Hemond’s family said in a statement released by the Diamondbacks. “The Hemond family shared many laughs with him until the end, and we appreciate the love and support of all his baseball family.”

Hemond was Chicago’s GM from 1970 to ’85 and served in the same role for Baltimore from 1988 to ’95. He won the Sporting News MLB Executive of the Year award in 1972, and then again in 1983 when the White Sox won the AL West.

His third Executive of the Year honor came in 1989, when the Orioles nearly won the AL East after losing 107 games the previous season.

Hemond is also considered the architect of the Arizona Fall League, and he helped found the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation to provide assistance to longtime scouts needing special support. In 2011, he received the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award, given by the Baseball Hall of Fame’s board of directors to someone whose efforts enhanced baseball’s positive impact on society.

“With a perpetual twinkle in his eye, Roland had a love for the game that was fueled by a respect and admiration for all who played it,” said Jane Forbes Clark, chairman of the Hall. “He worked tirelessly to help baseball family members in need and never wavered in his commitment to serve. We extend our condolences to his wife, Margo, and the entire Hemond family.”

Born Oct. 26, 1929 in Central Falls, Rhode Island, Hemond was the assistant scouting director for the Milwaukee Braves during the 1950s. Hemond helped assemble the Milwaukee team that won the World Series in 1957, and he became scouting director for the Los Angeles Angels when they began playing in 1961.

He joined the White Sox in 1970.

“I believe it’s shared by everyone in the baseball world, starting with his time with the Milwaukee Braves, that Roland Hemond touched and influenced more people than any other person in a really positive way,” said Chicago manager Tony La Russa, who also managed the White Sox during Hemond’s tenure as GM. “For years and years, he’s been the most beloved figure in the game. He treated everyone with kindness and respect and they returned it.”

In a 1975 stunt at the winter meetings, Hemond and White Sox owner Bill Veeck set up a table in the lobby of a Florida hotel with an “Open for Business Anytime” sign. They made four trades in an hour.

Veeck had Chicago’s publicity director call periodically, and Hemond would pretend he was answering calls from other teams.

“People would look around laughing, saying, ‘Jesus, this looks like it’s working ’cause they’re getting phone calls,'” Hemond recalled decades later. “I don’t think you could reenact it today.”

Hemond was senior executive vice president of baseball operations for the Diamondbacks from 1996 to 2000. Then he went back to the White Sox as an adviser before returning to the Diamondbacks as a special assistant from 2007 to ’20.

“Roland Hemond was one of the most respected executives that our game has ever known,” commissioner Rob Manfred said. “He mentored countless people in our sport and found ways to make our game stronger. Roland Hemond was a great gentleman whose contributions to our national pastime will never be forgotten.”
