What’s New

It is a very tough weekend in the Central for the Chicago BlackhawksVincent Pariseon December 17, 2021 at 5:46 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks have been a pretty good team since firing Jeremy Colliton and hiring Derek King. They have been a bubble-level team since the change but that won’t make up ground in the NHL. They are playing at the level that we projected them to play before the season started but they are way out of it because of the horrid start to the season.

Not only have they not made up any ground, but they have also lost ground. They need to play significantly better than a bubble team in order to get back in the race. They have some pieces at the top of their lineup that can do the job but it needs to come now or never.

It all starts on Friday night with a tilt at home against the Nashville Predators. This Nashville team is amazing compared to the early season projections. They come into Chicago tied with the St. Louis Blues for second place in the Central Division.

Juuse Saros is one of the best goalies in the National Hockey League. He will be in the conversation for the Vezina Trophy by the end of the season. The Hawks need to create traffic and high danger chances in order to beat this guy.

They also have Roman Josi who is a Norris Trophy candidate again on the back end. He is supported by forwards having outstanding seasons in Matt Duchene and Ryan Johansen. It is a very nice mix of size, skill, youth, and veterans that the Hawks will be dealing with.

The Chicago Blackhawks have two really tough games to play this weekend.

After a tough matchup like that, they have to fly south to play the Dallas Stars in a back-to-back situation. That is never easy to do, especially with two good Central Division foes as the opponent. Dallas hasn’t had the same level of success as Nashville so far but they are still in the mix for a postseason spot, although it is unlikely.

Joe Pavelski is a studly veteran. Jason Robertson is an outstanding second-year player. They share the Dallas scoring lead with 21 points apiece. Roope Hintz is third in scoring with 18 points and 11 of his points are goals. These are three very good forwards to keep an eye on along with the likes of the usual suspects of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.

They get really good goaltending from Jake Oettinger and Braden Holtby so creating those high danger chances is a must again. Miro Heiskanen and Ryan Suter lead the way on defense to round out a pretty good stars team.

The Hawks would need their best to win these games. It isn’t ideal to play against two tough division rivals in a back-to-back with travel but it is what it is. Hopefully, they can take care of their business at home and on the road.

Cicero firefighter suffers burns after falling through floor into basement

A Cicero firefighter suffered burns after falling through the floor of a house fire Friday morning in the western suburb.

Several firefighters were entering the first floor of the home at 5413 W 30th Pl. at 5:45 a.m. when the floor collapsed and the firefighter fell into the basement where the fire had started, Cicero spokesman Ray Hanania said.

The other firefighters pulled the firefighter up and out of the home. Paramedics took him to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

He was listed in good condition with first-degree burns to his back and chest, and second-degree burns to his neck, Hanania said. He also had minor burns to his face and wrists.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire spread through the walls into the attic and burned for another two hours, Hanania said. The fire department was trying to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring homes.

It was too early to determine the cause of the fire, Hanania said.

More than 30 people were displaced in another fire Wednesday at an apartment building at 2123 S. 51st Court, he said. No one was injured.

During the COVID-19 spike and postponement, let’s enjoy some Chicago Bulls numbersRyan Heckmanon December 17, 2021 at 1:00 pm

This season has been a blast for Chicago Bulls fans. We have seen the newly-created roster take off in a way we never thought was possible — and under circumstances we never saw coming.

To start the year, the Bull shave been playing without several key players here and there. Chicago lost Nikola Vucevic for a stretch, and had already lost Patrick Williams for the year.

Then came the COVID outbreak. The Bulls are in the midst of a week where two games have been postponed due to the majority of their roster being in health and safety protocol, and they do not play again until Sunday night when they take on the Los Angeles Lakers.

At 17-10, the Bulls are still second in their division and one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. When healthy, this team is a championship contender. They have given fans a reason to be legitimately excited about Chicago basketball once again.

Looking at the numbers, these Chicago Bulls are a team to reckon with as we’re just over a quarter into the season.

To begin with, the Bulls possess the number one scoring duo in the NBA.

Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan are both top-10 in the NBA in scoring

Right now, Zach LaVine (9th, 26.0) and DeMar DeRozan (6th, 26.4) are among the league-leaders in scoring. The Bulls haven’t had a scoring duo like this in decades. Not since the likes of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen have the Bulls had such a prolific scoring duo.

Alex Caruso is still leading the NBA in steals

Alex Caruso is tied for first in the NBA, averaging 2.2 steals per game along with the Miami Heat’s Jimmy Butler. His presence has meant more to the Bulls than fans could have ever thought when the team originally signed him over the summer.

The Bulls are 4th in the NBA in three-point percentage

As a team, the Bulls are shooting 36.8 percent from three-point range. Among qualified players, Lonzo Ball (42.1 percent) and Ayo Dosunmu (41.5 percent) are the team leaders. Javonte Green (38.5 percent) and LaVine (39.1 percent) are also making noise in this area.

Chicago is 8th in the NBA in overall field goal percentage

The Bulls are shooting 46.5 percent from the field. For perspective, the league-leading Utah Jazz are shooting 48.2 percent. The two guys scoring the most, DeRozan and LaVine, are shooting 49.8 and 49.0 percent respectively.

The Bulls are the no. 9 team in points allowed per game

Chicago is allowing 105.7 points per game as a team. They are 8th in the league with a +2.5 point differential on the season as well.

As a whole, this Bulls team is worlds above any recent roster fans have seen in Chicago. Head coach Billy Donovan has worked his magic, and even the role players have come up in big moments throughout this season. The team is playing together, and once they are all healthy, the rest of the Eastern Conference is in some trouble.

Ticket stub from MJ’s debut sells for record $264Kon December 17, 2021 at 12:40 pm

Early Friday, Michael Jordan posterized yet again — in the perpetually world of sports cards and collectibles.

The highest-graded ticket stub (bestowed with a grade of EX-MT 6 from Professional Sports Authenticator, or PSA) from Michael Jordan’s NBA debut sold for $264,000 at auction, breaking the record for most expensive collectible sports ticket ever sold.

More than 13,000 fans were in attendance to see Michael Jordan make his NBA debut against the Washington Bullets at the now-demolished Chicago Stadium on Oct. 26, 1984. Huggins & Scott Auctions

The sale, conducted by Huggins & Scott Auctions, includes a 20% buyer’s premium. Even without said premium, the sale still would have broken the previous record, set in October when a ticket stub from Game 3 of the 1903 (and first) World Series sold for $175,000 at Christie’s.

Jordan made his NBA debut on Oct. 26, 1984, at the now-demolished Chicago Stadium. More than 13,000 were in attendance to see Jordan’s Bulls beat the Washington Bullets 109-93.

Jordan scored 16 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 7 assists. He also blocked four shots, the third most by a rookie in a team’s season opener all time.

The stub is yet another item from Jordan’s rookie season that has cropped up recently. In late October, a pair of game-worn sneakers from Jordan’s rookie season sold at Sotheby’s for $1.472 million, which decimated the record for most expensive game-worn footwear, which had also been held by Jordan.
