Best Indoor Exercises for those Icy, Frigid Winter Days
BY SANDRA GUY
There’s no better time to find fabulous indoor exercise routines, as online health clubs clamor to satisfy COVID stay-at-homers — and you’ll no longer have to worry about some Machiavellian gym manager running off your favorite teachers.
With online exercise videos available by subscription, you can watch your favorite teachers and exercise routines over and over with on-demand classes and searchable class libraries.
Where to start?
My husband and I — both in our 60s — swear by “Les Mills’” body-pump classes because they are tough, intense and build muscle. The company is run by the family of four-time Olympian and New Zealand native Les Mills. We’ve grown to love the instructors’ accents and travels to beautiful locales worldwide.
The program also offers yoga, meditation, kickboxing, spinning, weight lifting, and others with names such as RPM, SH’BAM and BodyPump.
Save your favorite routines and stay up-to-date with the latest releases on your own schedule and use the equipment you have at home. The yearly fee of about $120 will be well worth it, especially if you exercise every day. And you can join the Les Mills On Demand (LMOD) Facebook group to share your journey and to cheer on others. See https://www.lesmills.com/us/
Other popular on-demand programs include Peloton, which issues new music and routines daily and features hilarious, personality-plus instructors (subscription required), and others you can find with Google searches such as “Dance Body Arms,” “Six-Minute Standing Abs” by Bowflex, or a kettlebell routine.
You can find kettlebells in weights ranging from 8 pounds all the way up to 108 pounds. Opt for the real cast iron models, start low-weight and add as you feel comfortable.
Another affordable, easy-to-use routine involves resistance training with bands.
For those looking for a more daring adventure, note that a six-minute session on a trampoline is just about equivalent to running a mile and easier on your joints, thanks to the lower impact cushioning.
Another fun way to get a great full-body workout is to track down an indoor rock-climbing wall. Indoor climbing gyms are becoming more popular, so finding one shouldn’t be too hard. You’ll find a list of all accredited facilities in the US and beyond here.
It’s never too early to dig out your swimsuit and hit the local public swimming pool. In the winter, swimming offers a great, low-impact workout that anyone can enjoy. Because it’s so easy on the joints, you can exercise for longer without tiring yourself — or your muscles, allowing you to burn 400 to 700 calories an hour, depending on your weight.
If you’re more daring and have discretionary income, you might try these:
Look for affordable alternatives at the local YMCA or community center. They host indoor activities ranging from weightlifting to water aerobics to recreational leagues for soccer, volleyball, basketball.AIR Aerial Fitness uses a hammock rigging system that supports a person’s body weight, and is designed so that participants engage their core instantly.
Among AIR fitness classes are AIR Core, a 30-minute ab blast class; AIR Foundation, a 50-minute beginner class that introduces new clients to aerial exercises; and AIR Flow, a mixed-level flow class fusing yoga poses with aerials to increase flexibility. http://www.airfitnow.com.)
It’s easier than ever to stay motivated with fitness trackers, including those that let you gamify your fitness goals and offer rewards when you meet them.
One example, Yes.Fit, offers virtual races so you may complete at your own pace pre-set workouts designed around popular themes like movies, national parks and holidays, as well as charitable initiatives for environmental and social causes. Once you’ve completed the course, you will see trophies, medals, coins and other merchandise.
Think of exercise as an opportunity for self-care and self-enrichment, rather than as a chore or a duty. Appreciate the ability to move and improve.
Now, make exercise a seamless aspect of your life. #No Excuses.
