Beer Preview: Haymarket Cold Dark Night

Let’s pop another beer that’s been sent to me by the brewer’s people for comment. When that happens, I like to make a video review.
Haymarket Pub & Brewery opened in the Haymarket Square area in 2010. Founding head brewer Pete Crowley made this solo venture from his position at Rock Bottom on Grand Ave. In 2016, they opened a production brewery in Bridgman, Michigan, to get cans into stores and kegs into bars. Just last year, I wrote up their Cubs-themed beer, Joe Maddon’s Try Not to Suck.
In honor of their entry into the Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers, they sent out some of their barrel-aged taproom favorites, in cans for the first time.

Haymarket Cold Dark Night
The first of these under consideration is Cold Dark Night, a bourbon barrel-aged doppelbock beer, at 8.5% abv.
From the can, the beer, pours a fizzy, soda like foam over a deep brown beer body. The smell is predominated by alcohol notes, with a grainy mix in the background.
The beer’s taste starts with just some nice roasty grainy texture. Once I get further into it, there’s more pronounced bourbon notes. As you’d expect from a malty high-test brew, there’s not much discernible hop note. The impression is like a boilermaker of bourbon mixed with German dark lager.
