Living in McKenzie Square Wilmette IL
McKenzie Square is one of Wilmette’s distinct neighborhoods and named for the local school, McKenzie Elementary School. This area is roughly bounded by Green Bay Road on the east; Ridge Road on the west side; Lake Avenue along the north side; and Wilmette on the south.
McKenzie Square is decidedly popular with home buyers – it’s centrally located in Wilmette – close to the school, train station, downtown Wilmette, restaurants, shopping, the public library, and the post office. Because the school is located between Wilmette and Lake avenues, children don’t have to cross a major street to get there. (There are homes, however, that are located across those streets that attend this school, but they are not in McKenzie Square.) Homes tend to me more affordable here than east of Green Bay.
Children living in McKenzie Square attend McKenzie Elementary (K-4), Highcrest Middle School (5-6), Wilmette Junior High (7-8) and on to New Trier High School. Local private schools include St. Joseph and St. Francis (both Catholic and through 8th grade.) Private high schools include Regina Dominican (Catholic girls schools) and Loyola (Jesuit school.) In nearby Winnetka, there is North Shore Country Day School which educates children in junior kindergarten through 12th grade.
If you are interested in buying a home in Wilmette, McKenzie Square is a better value than other areas such as the Cage, Kenilworth Gardens, or Indian Hill Estates.
Although there has been a flurry of new construction here, there are still many older homes available. Styles of home include bungalows, Victorians, farmhouses, Georgians, Cape Cods, and four-squares. Some streets still have the original brick.
