What’s New

A thankful Bulls team, even with coach Billy Donovan in the protocols

It was almost going too well the last few days.

All the players on the Bulls roster were out of the NBA’s health and safety protocols, and were even getting practice time in.

That didn’t last long, however, as the Bulls announced after the Friday practice that coach Billy Donovan entered the protocols, leaving Chris Fleming as the acting head coach.

Donovan was the fourth NBA head coach to enter the protocols, and the first reported on the Bulls coaching staff.

Not that it came as a big surprise, considering how much interaction Donovan has with his players, and it also didn’t take away from the big picture surrounding his team.

Zach LaVine is yet to play a Christmas Day game as a Bull.

That will undoubtedly change next season, unless there’s a catastrophic meltdown over the remaining 53 regular-season games.

Considering the Bulls currently sit with the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, they will once again be deemed “Christmas Day watchable” at this time next year, breaking a streak of five straight years Bulls fans had to watch other teams play on one of the more important days for the Association.

Something LaVine should be very thankful for.

Then again, LaVine has a lot to be thankful for these days, starting with the addition of teammate DeMar DeRozan to the roster last offseason.

What’s nice about LaVine is he’s continually proving to finally have All-Star talent, but not an over-the-top ego. He hasn’t just tailored his game to fit DeRozan’s, he’s embraced the veteran forward with open arms.

That was again on display the last three weeks.

The last game the two played together was the statement win in Brooklyn, when they downed the Nets 111-107 on Dec. 4.

It was after that victory that DeRozan went into the league’s health and safety protocols, forcing LaVine into a very familiar situation – playing the solo act on a big stage.

In a win over Denver two nights later, LaVine did just that, scoring 32 points on 13-for-23 shooting. But then a road trip to Cleveland and Miami all but cancelled the “LaVine Show,” as the Bulls lost both games with DeRozan in isolation.

Just as DeRozan was ready to return, it was LaVine’s turn to play the protocol game. DeRozan playing hero worked out a bit better, as the veteran downed the Lakers with a ridiculous 19-point fourth quarter, and then came back to blow out Houston a night later.

Granted, lesser opponents than what LaVine had to deal with, but still impressive. Yet, following that showcase, DeRozan texted LaVine and told him to get his “ass” back as soon as possible.

It’s back.

“He said he doesn’t want to do that all the time,” LaVine said of the dialogue the two had while LaVine was in quarantine. “I felt the same way when I called him after that Miami game. I said, ‘Look, man, I’ve gone through this before. I don’t want to do this.’ ”

That’s why the two – along with Nikola Vucevic – are looking forward to Sunday so much.

As long as there’s not a postponement or injury – both big ifs in today’s NBA landscape – when the Bulls host the Pacers that evening, it will be the first game that all three All-Stars will play together in over three weeks.

Heck, the Thursday and Friday practices the Bulls got in were the first time the three practiced together in that same time period.

Not only was LaVine obviously glad to be back, but back working alongside a player in DeRozan that continues to impress him.

“That was one of the most impressive things I’ve seen because I remember coming back off of COVID last year and it took me a couple games to get into it,” LaVine said of DeRozan’s play. “Dude is incredible, man. I got high standards for myself, but there are certain things you just gotta tip your hat to. I called him afterwards and was like, ‘Man that was incredible.’ It’s who he is.”

Bulls’ Donovan enters NBA’s COVID protocolson December 24, 2021 at 5:34 pm

Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan has entered the league’s health and safety protocols, it was announced Friday.

He becomes the fourth NBA head coach to enter into COVID protocols, joining the Lakers‘ Frank Vogel, Indiana‘s Rick Carlisle and Sacramento‘s Alvin Gentry.

Bulls assistant Chris Fleming will be acting head coach in Donovan’s absence.

Donovan, who had cold-like symptoms on Friday morning, became the latest member of the Bulls to land in protocols.

The Bulls had as many as 10 players in the protocol earlier this month, which led to two of their games being postponed, but all players had cleared protocols and were expected to be available for Sunday’s game against the Pacers.

Chicago has the second game of a back-to-back on Monday at the Atlanta Hawks.

The one reason why the Chicago Bears must fire Ryan PaceJason Parinion December 24, 2021 at 1:00 pm

Although it seems that Chicago is unanimous in their desire for the Chicago Bears to fire head coach Matt Nagy, there has been some spirited debate over whether or not GM Ryan Pace should meet the same fate.

There have been no chants at Chicago Bulls games, no harassing of Ryan Pace’s children at their high school football games. But nonetheless, many fans have been pleading with the Bears front office to dump both Nagy and Pace at the end of the season (or sooner, in Nagy’s case).

Despite the displeasure, there have also been many fans making a case for Pace to stay on board and help the Bears select their next coach and develop rookie quarterback Justin Fields.

Among the most common arguments are Pace’s moderate success in late-round picks and his slam dunk decision to trade up and draft Justin Fields in the 2021 NFL Draft.

And despite Nagy’s failure to succeed in Chicago, hiring Nagy was the right decision at the time. He seemed to be the most qualified and promising candidate of the Bears hires.

Sure, Pace has had some success with the likes of Justin Fields and Roquan Smith. His 2021 draft has the potential to have numerous Pro Bowlers over the years. But at the end of the day, there’s one reason why the Bears must fire Ryan Pace.

He’s just been mediocre.

That’s it.

Ryan Pace has failed to assemble a championship team in six years. It’s time that the Chicago Bears move on from mediocrity.

Mediocrity has been the standard of this organization for years. The McCaskeys have essentially refused to focus on the product on the field for decades. The Bears have been spoiled to have such a dedicated fanbase, and as a result of an endless cash flow to the pockets of the organization despite years of futility, the team has had virtually no reason to change the awful on-field product.

It’s time that that changes. Bears fans deserve more.

Mediocrity has been a staple of the Bears organization for years. Instead of continuing to employ a staff and front office that is “decent at best,” it’s time for the McCaskey family to hire leadership that will get the team back to its days of being one of the premier football organizations in the country.

Five franchises have been eliminated from playoff contention in 2021. The Chicago Bears are one of them.

The other four are the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Jets, the Detroit Lions and the Houston Texans.

Those five teams essentially make up the basement of the NFL standings year in and year out.

Three of them have never appeared in a Super Bowl. One of them (the Jets) only has one appearance, a 1968 victory in Super Bowl III.

And then there’s the Bears, whose only Super Bowl victory came 36 years ago.

Despite how one may feel, Virginia McCaskey is still football royalty. The best thing her family could is to give her some Bears success in her later years.

To do that, the team needs to move on from the status quo. Pace has failed to maintain a consistently reliable defense, the offensive line looks like Swiss cheese, and the organization has yet to develop a quarterback in well over half a century.

Change needs to start from the top. Ownership, the front office, all the way down to the product on the field needs to be improved.

Unfortunately for Bears fans, NFL insider Ian Rapoport hasn’t heard that the Pace’s job is in jeopardy.

How rough it must be to continually be “just mediocre” at your job, and yet still have job security and a multi-million dollar income.

Enough with the mediocrity. It’s time that the Chicago Bears again become a daunted franchise once and for all.

Fire them. Fire them all.

3 insane Patrick Kane trade packages with Calgary FlamesVincent Pariseon December 24, 2021 at 12:00 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks are in a tough spot. They are currently ten points out of a playoff spot at the Christmas break which is not where they want to be at all. They went into the 2021-22 season with some playoff-level expectations but are not looking good in that quest.

A couple of weeks ago, the New York Post brought up the idea of the New York Rangers acquiring Patrick Kane from the Blackhawks. It was an interesting idea to explore but why stop at the Rangers? There are a lot of elite teams that could afford Patrick Kane and could use him in their quest to win the Stanley Cup.

One of those teams that makes a lot of sense is the Calgary Flames. They are in the thick of the playoff race in the Pacific Division with a record of 15-7-6. They have the best goal differential in the entire Western Conference which means that Darryl Sutter’s team is playing his traditional brand of hockey.

Blackhawks fans might remember those Los Angeles Kings teams that were so good in the early 2010s. Sutter was the coach of the Kings at the time and had major success with two Stanley Cups. Now, he is bringing a similar game to Calgary.

Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks would fit in very well on the Calgary Flames.

Patrick Kane would fit in well there. They have a lot of good forwards up front that could help Kane get back to his elite level which would turn the Flames into a legit Stanley Cup threat. They get really good goaltending and a solid team game which is also something that Kane is used to so it makes so much sense. These three trade packages might get a deal done between Calgary and Chicago:
