Tall tale or reality? Either way Bulls’ DeMar DeRozan leads by example

DeMar DeRozan was unusually late to Monday’s post-game presser.

Fact.

The Bulls veteran forward did take to the United Center court after the game and work on his free-throw shooting, while that floor was being taken apart for Blackhawks hockey.

Again, another fact.

The idea that he made 250 free throws in that time frame between final horn and media session? Tough to swallow, but hey, DeRozan’s legend only grows in these parts, so why ruin a good thing.

“Usually, I always go back at night, get my rhythm, make a couple of hundred free throws at least in between games,” DeRozan said of his process and why he went back out there after beating the Magic. “With back to backs the last two weeks, I haven’t been able to keep up with my rhythm. And it showed [Monday] – don’t even look right. No way I was going to go home feeling comfortable shooting [like] that.”

Sounds like a player that went 1-for-9 from the free throw line, including an air ball.

However, DeRozan actually went 7-for-13, but was really bothered by the 4-for-7 in the final quarter. That’s money time for the “King of the Fourth.” The “championship rounds,” as DeRozan calls them.

To miss easy jabs to an exposed jaw of the opponent?

Can’t happen.

DeRozan regularly hits the Advocate Center late at night to work on his game, so taking the court right after a win wasn’t out of his comfort zone.

If anything it continued to show how serious he was about doing big things this season.

“Just trying to be a creature of habit,” DeRozan said. “What’s that thing? They say it takes 21 days to create a habit or something like that. So I try to use that same mentality when it comes to basketball.”

According to DeRozan, he does a set of 10 free throws, and if he misses any of the 10 the set starts over. He said he got 25 sets in after the Magic win.

“We can’t be satisfied with anything,” DeRozan continued. “We work extremely hard, can’t take nothing for granted. We understand our task, to continue to keep getting better. Yeah, we won some games. We’re on a winning streak, but we’re not satisfied with none of that.”

Even eight-straight wins, like the Bulls are currently riding for the first time since March of 2012?

“No,” DeRozan responded. “Move onto the next one.”

That’s why DeRozan has catapulted himself to instant team leader this season. He not only leads with words, but with actions.

If the best player on the team is putting in all the extra work at age 32 and on year 13 of his NBA career, younger players better take notice and follow suit.

The nice thing for this Bulls roster is by all accounts they have.

This was a team that all arrived in Chicago weeks before training camp started in the fall, and began running with each other. It’s also a team that preaches hard work.

DeRozan wasn’t the only Bull to put in extra credit the last few weeks. Nikola Vucevic was in a shooting slump back in November and into December, so admitted that the only way he knew how to get out of it was increasing his extra work.

That’s exactly what he did.

“We do have a team with a lot of hard-working guys,” Vucevic said. “That’s the only way you become a good player individually and then for the team to work. I think we have guys who understand that.”

Lyft needs to do more to protect its drivers, lawyer says after releasing videos showing driver, two passengers ducking from gunfire

An attorney for a Lyft driver claims the company left his client to fend for himself after a gunman shot at the driver and his two passengers, shattering his car’s back window, in Woodlawn on the South Side last month.

Attorney Bryant Greening released two videos he said were taken by the driver’s dashboard camera early on Dec. 19. They show the driver speeding through traffic as he repeatedly tries to contact Lyft’s emergency team, then ducking along with the two backseat passengers as shots are fired from an SUV.

No one was hit by the gunfire, but the driver was later beaten by friends of the passengers when he dropped them off, according to the videos.

Greening called on Lyft to do more to protect its drivers, including real-time emergency assistance and regular screening and background checks of passengers.

“Ride-share companies advertise that their services are safe and tout their purported safety features,” Greening said Tuesday. “Yet in this case, we see a driver begging for assistance and being left stranded and vulnerable.”

There was no immediate comment from Lyft.

Greening said he plans to file a lawsuit against the company “in the coming weeks.” For now, he said, the driver does not want to be publicly identified.

The harrowing ride began around 2:50 a.m. when the driver, 52, picked up two passengers near the University of Chicago. The video shows the two passengers ducking low into their seats as they demand the driver speed away.

As the Lyft driver stops at a red light in the 600 block of East 67th Street, a black SUV approaches from behind, pulls alongside and someone inside opens fire.

A bullet shatters the back window of the driver’s Honda Accord. “Go, go, go can you go fast please,” one of the passengers screams over and over, according to the video.

As he speeds off, the driver notifies Lyft’s emergency team through the ride-share’s app, as he’s been trained to do, Greening said. “Help me. Call police,” he tells a safety agent.

The SUV cuts off the chase and the Lyft driver drops the passengers in the 6500 block of South King Drive, where he is then beaten by the passenger’s friends, according to the videos.

Several people are seen striking the driver after someone opens the door. Greening said one of the passengers may also have been involved.

The driver escaped and flagged down officers. Police confirmed that they are investigating the shooting and the beating, but released no other details.

Greening said Lyft never notified police on its own, and the company has not offered support for any injuries to the driver or damage to his car.

“The dash cam footage is Exhibit A on how ride-share companies fail their drivers,” Greening said. “Lyft promised that there were systems in place to protect drivers from violent attacks, but when push came to shove, our client was ducking bullets and taking fists to the face.”

Greening said his client intends to seek compensation for medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering and emotional distress.

Suns’ Williams exits protocols, to coach vs. Pelson January 4, 2022 at 4:11 pm

print

After missing four games in the NBA’s COVID-19 protocols, Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams has been cleared and will join the team for Tuesday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans, the team announced.

The Suns, at 28-8, have the second-best record in the league.

Williams entered the league’s health and safety protocols on Dec. 27, with Kevin Young going 2-2 as the acting coach during Williams’ absence.

Suns guard Landry Shamet, who scored 17 points in Sunday’s victory over Charlotte, was added to the protocols Tuesday. He joins Deandre Ayton, Jae Crowder, JaVale McGee and Abdel Nader on the list.

The Suns on Tuesday also signed Justin Jackson to a 10-day contract.

Washington Football Team will announce new nickname on Feb. 2

Washington’s NFL team announced Tuesday it will unveil its new name on Feb. 2 and that it will not be the Wolves or RedWolves.

Commanders, Admirals, Armanda, Brigade, Sentinels, Defenders, Red Hogs, Presidents and the status quo “Washington Football Team” were among the other finalists.

“We are on the brink of starting a new chapter, but our history, our legacy cannot be lost along the way,” team president Jason Wright said in an episode of the team-produced show “Making the Brand.” “Now, more than ever, it’s important that we stay connected to our roots. We understand the importance of choosing a meaningful name: one that will anchor the team for the next 90 years and beyond.”

Wright said the decision was made not to go with Wolves or RedWolves because of trademarks held by other organizations. Those possibilities were popular among Washington fans.

The new helmets and uniforms will feature the franchise’s signature burgundy-and-gold colors, with three stars on the collar and stripes on the shoulders of otherwise plain jerseys. In a “Making the Brand” clip showing him getting a look at one of the helmets, coach Ron Rivera said: “I love this. Right on. I think the look’s going to be hot.”

A trailer teasing the reveal included a “W” logo making an appearance.

The video featured the messages: “Hail to the greats that laid the foundation for our legacy,” “Hail to the fans we consider family,” “We are and always have been Washington,” “We will fight for our community” and “Together we will define our future.”

Photos of franchise greats were mixed in with current players meeting with military personnel and fans.

The organization dropped its old name in July 2020 after decades of complaints that it was racist toward Native Americans and recent pressure from team sponsors. The decision was made to be known as the Washington Football Team that season, which stuck around for 2021 while the front office went through a lengthy rebranding process.

“Our journey to a new identity is a marathon, not a sprint,” Wright said. “To get it right, we had to take every step of the process seriously, and the destination is a sum of all those parts.”

Washington was the first team in the four major North American professional sports leagues to move away from Native American imagery amid a national reckoning on race. Cleveland in Major League Baseball followed suit, adopting the new name Guardians that is now in effect after settling a lawsuit with a roller derby team by the same name.

MLB’s Atlanta Braves and the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks have defended keeping their names.

Wright made it clear during the rebranding process that Washington would not use any sort of Native American imagery moving forward. He, Rivera and others have made references to wanting to honor the once-storied franchise’s tradition, which includes three Super Bowl championships.

“I just think the heritage and the history of our team is what’s so important, and, as fans, I think we’re going to rally around that team,” Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs said. “I’d say probably what’s more important about naming the team, it’s trying to bring everybody together. … That’s the one thing that we’ve got going for ourselves is the loyalty that we have for that team.”

Washington has not had a lot going on or off the field in recent years. The league fined the team $10 million after an investigation into workplace conduct, owner Dan Snyder squabbled with minority partners before buying out their shares, the front office took criticism this season for botching late safety Sean Taylor’s jersey retirement and over the past 15 years the team has not won a playoff game.

After missing four games in the league’s COVID protocols, Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams has been cleared and will join the team for Tuesday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Suns, at 28-8, have the second-best record in the NBA.

Williams entered the league’s health and safety protocols on Dec. 27, with Kevin Young serving as acting coach during Williams’ absence.

Chicago Bulls’ DeMar DeRozan displays ultimate leadership in winRyan Heckmanon January 4, 2022 at 2:48 pm

The Chicago Bulls are on a roll, winning their eighth straight game on Monday night. Meanwhile, the second-place Brooklyn Nets have lost three in a row and the Bulls’ first-place lead continues to grow.

In defeating the Orlando Magic 102-98, the Bulls pulled out a gritty victory.

It was a game that saw them start slow, going down by 11 in the first quarter. Chicago slowly chipped away and made the game close by halftime. But, neither team could pull away for the remainder of the game.

This was a night where Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan started slow, not necessarily shooting the ball well to begin the game. But, as they normally do, both of them came up big in the fourth quarter.

DeRozan, specifically, made some nice plays with under a few minutes left. However, one area he struggled was out of the norm — at the free throw line. DeRozan shot just 7-for-13 from the charity stripe and missed three in the final minute of the game.

After the game, DeMar DeRozan showed the Chicago Bulls why he is a true leader by making up for his mistakes.

This is why I love ?@DeMar_DeRozan? Post game ,shooting free throws after going 7-13 from the line. Consummate professional. pic.twitter.com/FPWZXXkhug

After the game, DeRozan stayed out on the United Center court and shot free throws. Per K.C. Johnson, DeRozan made roughly 250 of them before he allowed himself to leave for the night.

Though he finished with 29 points and did help the Bulls close this game out, DeRozan wasn’t satisfied with his performance. Not only that, but he told Johnson that he and the Bulls can’t be satisfied with anything right now:

“We can’t be satisfied with anything,” DeRozan said. “We work extremely hard. We can’t take nothing for granted. We understand what’s at task and that’s to continue to get better. Yeah, we won some games. We’re on a win streak. But we’re not satisfied with none of that.”

Over this 8-game winning streak, DeRozan has clearly led the Bulls. He’s been the one constant who has closed out games and continued to lead the team in scoring. He even made NBA history, making buzzer-beating game-winners two nights in a row, becoming the first player to ever do such thing.

Monday night, he looked tired. He looked a little off.

Fortunately, the Bulls now get three days off before playing the Washington Wizards on Friday night.

For now, they can recover and rest up before this next stretch of six games in nine days and get ready to extend that streak even further.
