Blackhawks snap losing streak with tight-checking win over Golden Knights

LAS VEGAS — The Blackhawks wanted to win Saturday for Marc-Andre Fleury.

The bouquet of flowers tossed onto the ice at the final horn indicated that mission succeeded.

Fleury saved 30 of 31 shots in his first Vegas homecoming and the defense stiffened late to help the Hawks rally past the Golden Knights, 2-1. The Hawks snapped a six-game losing streak with their first road win since Dec. 9 and first win of any sort since Dec. 15.

“Last game in Arizona, things didn’t go so well,” Fleury said. “We had a good talk after in the locker room and [determined] didn’t matter if it was Vegas or somebody else, we had to bounce back. And we answered the bell. The team played well.”

The Hawks’ effort to make their games more “boring” had completely disappeared the past few weeks, that mantra seemingly forgotten as abruptly as the many before it.

But it returned Saturday. After a furious Vegas push out of the second intermission gate, the Hawks turned on their neutral-zone trap and locked things down, allowing only five shots on goal over game’s final 16 minutes.

“We kept them to the outside, and we forced them to make lateral plays instead of shooting, and we were blocking some shots,” interim coach Derek King said. “Guys were getting in the way, getting in lanes, forcing bad pucks. [In] the physical aspect of it, too, we had guys putting the body up more than we usually do.

“That’s the way we have to play and when we do that we give ourselves a chance.”

The Hawks finished with 35 team hits to 16 for the Knights — Jujhar Khaira alone was credited with 10 — and also blocked 24 of the Knights’ 64 shot attempts.

Fleury then made his biggest save of the night at the perfect time, diving across to his left to rob Evgenii Dadonov with 61 seconds left.

“I came low, and I knew he had some room on top, so I tried to get up there,” Fleury said.

The Hawks also altered the usual narrative in two other beneficial ways. After struggling all season to get offensive production from anyone other than their top stars, Khaira scored his third goal of the season and Riley Stillman his first to flip a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead during the second period.

And after committing an unsightly 80 penalty minutes (and allowing 32 opponent power plays) over their last eight games, they took zero penalties Saturday.

“We talked about that: just stay out of the box with these guys, because they can pick you apart,” King said. “We did a great job.”

Fleury was honored with a brief pre-puck-drop video tribute and announcement, then again with a postgame ovation from the crowd of 18,367.

“The whole time was very special — before the game, on the bench, going through my routine in the empty arena, and in warmups, having so many people close to the glass with signs and my jerseys and stuff,” he said. “It was awesome.”

Michael O’Brien’s high school basketball notebook

DePaul Prep knows how to run a shootout. Everything ran pretty much on time, there was wifi and rosters you don’t have to beg for and a nice table to sit at. I could spend the entire season sitting up in the balcony watching basketball. Well done Pat Mahoney and Tom Kleinschmidt.

The basketball was pretty good. Highlights below and there’s a full story on St. Ignatius beating Bolingbrook. The Wolfpack looked pretty good playing fast early in that one. Bolingbrook speeds everyone up and St. Ignatius handled it really well.

After driving home through the ice I watched Kenwood take on Christian Brothers, a team out of St. Louis, at the Highland Shootout. The Broncos jumped out to a big lead early behind some big plays from guard Darrin Ames, who is back from his injury.

Christian Brothers has a really intriguing sophomore, 7-2 John Bol. Kenwood dominated most of the first half and led into the fourth quarter but wound up losing 73-69. That’s a win the Broncos should have been able to finish off. Technicals and some really unwise decisions cost them a victory.

Ames finished with 21 points and Trey Pettigrew scored 17. Bol had 14 for CBC and Robert Martin led them with 26.

Saturday’s top games

Glenbard West 60, Benet 45: The Hilltoppers take care of business in the final game at DePaul Prep’s shootout. Caden Pierce had 17 and Bobby Durkin added 15. Braden Huff scored 11. Big senior Kyle Thomas led the Redwings with 16 points.

DePaul Prep 45, Homewood-Flossmoor 35: Vikings fans are going to start bribing me to leave the gym before their team plays. H-F just always falls flat when I watch. The Rams were in control from start to finish in this one. Dylan Arnett was very aggressive and senior guard Julian Green had some nice moments for DePaul Prep.

Loyola 55, St. Patrick 53: I watched the fourth quarter of this one. The Shamrocks led early but Loyola took the lead on a three from junior Alex Engro with 2:26 to play. St. Patrick senior Brandon Adorno made it a one-point game with nine seconds to play, but sophomore Miles Boland was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 18 seconds to seal the win for the Ramblers.

Peoria Notre Dame 50, St. Rita 38: Did everyone expect too much of a loaded sophomore team? Maybe. I received a few texts after this one. I guess I’m not as worried as everyone else. It was always going to be more important how good the Mustangs looked in late February and March than right now. They lost by 12 to a good team. Kaiden Space scored 14 and Illinois recruit Morez Johnson had 11.

York 65, Sandburg 44: The Dukes win on the road behind a big effort from Drew Kircher. The senior scored 31. James White led Sandburg with 17 points.

Morgan Park 56, St. Viator 47: The Mustangs have receded from the spotlight since Nick Irvin moved on but they’ve been a tough matchup for opponents this season. Big man Lidell Miller had 20 points and 16 rebounds and star quarterback Aaron Warren added nine points. They improve to 5-5.

Hyde Park 84, Vocational 59: Another nice win for the Thunderbirds. No letdown after a quick turnaround with an early-afternoon game after winning at Riverside-Brookfield last night. Malik Jenkins scored 15 and Cam Williford added 14 points. Damarion Morris contributed 11 points and six assists. The Thunderbirds are 11-3 and have won seven consecutive games. LaShawn Pollard continued his breakout senior season with 35 points and eight rebounds for the Cavaliers.

St. Louis Chaminade 103, Yorkville Christian 59: A rough one for the Mustangs at the Highland Shootout. Duke recruit Jaden Schutt led Yorkville with 22 points.

Lake Forest Academy 67, Proviso East 65: I never know what to do with LFA. They usually play a lot of local teams, but they aren’t in the IHSA state playoffs so it is easy to kind of forget about them. They now have two different teams popping up in the standings and I’m not sure what that’s about. Anyway, they knocked off the Pirates today. Simon Weisserman, a 6-7 junior, led the Caxys with 23 points and 15 rebounds.

Leo 71, De La Salle 55: The Meteors knocked of DePaul Prep last night but fell short tonight at Leo. JaKeem Cole scored 29 and Tyler Smith added 13 points, five assists and six rebounds.

Lindblom 49, Palatine 43: What a solid win for the Eagles, taking down a good Mid-Suburban League team. Senior Zachary Royser had 14 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. Sophomore Je’Shawn Stevenson scored 17 and senior Reggie King had 9 points and 10 rebounds. Lindblom is 11-3.

Wheaton Warrenville South 40, Lake Park 28: Another high-quality win for the Tigers. Tyler Fawcett scored 13 and Braylen Meredith added nine points.

Young 75, Totino Grace, MN 67: Darrin Ames isn’t the only talented Public League guard that returned today. Dalen Davis had a huge game in Minnesota with 31 points, seven assists and three steals.

Blackhawks notebook: Brett Connolly, Tanner Kero on good terms after ‘unfortunate’ hit

LAS VEGAS — Blackhawks forward Brett Connolly looks at the calendar and can’t believe it’s already January.

”Personally, it’s been a wild year for me,” he said Saturday. ”It’s something I never would’ve expected to start the year — that [I’d go to the American Hockey League], that I’d come back and [that I’d] get suspended for four games when I’ve never been suspended in my life.”

Connolly made it only two games into his long-awaited return to the Hawks’ lineup when his illegal hit to the head of Stars forward Tanner Kero on Dec. 18 landed him on the suspended list through the loss Thursday to the Coyotes.

Even now, weeks later, Connolly seems disturbed by — and sincerely apologetic for — that ugly moment in Dallas.

”Anybody that’s played with me or knows me personally knows that was never the intention,” he said. ”It’s a fast game. A lot’s going on mentally and physically, and [it was] just an unfortunate incident. I was happy when I reached out to him that he was doing OK. It was nice to have fluid conversations with him just to tell him I honestly did not mean to do that. The only thing that matters is he’s OK.”

Connolly said he was able to shoot ”a ton of pucks” and work on using his body effectively in the offensive zone during his suspension — which, thanks to the five postponed games since it went into effect, ”seemed like it never was going to end.”

And the Hawks can use him now, not only as a body — his return Saturday against the Golden Knights gave them 12 forwards after they played with only 11 on Thursday — but also as a proven goal-scorer (in previous seasons, anyway).

But there’s no question Connolly feels antsy to find a rhythm.

”I’m looking forward to getting my chance . . . to come in and help get some offense going,” he said. ”Obviously, the goal [is] just to work as hard as I can.”

COVID list status quo

No players have been added to the Hawks’ COVID-19 protocol list in the two days since three guys went on it right before warmups Thursday. That’s good news.

But the Hawks had hoped goalie Kevin Lankinen, who has been on the list since Dec. 31, would be removed from the list and be able to join them during the Las Vegas or Columbus legs of this road trip. That now appears unlikely to happen.

”I don’t think he will,” interim coach Derek King said. ”He hasn’t played; he hasn’t done anything, really. He needs to get some practice time and some shots. So [it’s] pretty doubtful for him showing up in Columbus.”

Lankinen and the three COVID additions Thursday — forwards Brandon Hagel and Sam Lafferty and defenseman Erik Gustafsson — are all back in Chicago, isolating. Arvid Soderblom will remain the Hawks’ second goalie for at least a few more days.

Dach unruffled by Makar

Avalanche star Cale Makar’s highlight-of-the-week goal that beat the Hawks in overtime Tuesday came at the expense of center Kirby Dach, whom Makar blew past.

Dach — normally one of the Hawks’ better defensive forwards — hasn’t let that one embarrassing moment get into his head, however.

”It happens to everybody,” he said. ”[You] turn the page, move on. A good player makes good plays. [There’s] not much else you can do.”

Klay will play for Warriors on Sunday vs. Cavalierson January 8, 2022 at 11:19 pm

print

Five-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA champion Klay Thompson will be available to play for the Golden State Warriors in Sunday night’s game vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Golden State star made it official with his own creative announcement on Instagram as he so loves to do.

Thompson has been cleared to play and will play in his first game in more than 2 1/2 years after being sidelined by two devastating injuries.

Coach Steve Kerr wouldn’t confirm Thompson’s status following practice Saturday, saying “it’s not my announcement or decision to make.” He also instructing the media to watch their phones with thanks for putting up with his “charade.”

Thompson will start but with fewer minutes for now.

The 31-year-old Thompson hasn’t played since suffering a torn ACL in his left knee in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals as Toronto clinched the championship. While rehabbing from surgery for that injury, he tore his right Achilles tendon scrimmaging the day before training camp began.

“When he comes back, if it’s tomorrow night, it will be one of the most emotional nights of my basketball life,” Kerr said.

Thompson, now sporting an old-school headband he plans to stick with as his curly hair is longer, knows it will take time to build back up to his pre-injury minutes and performance on both ends of the floor.

“The game needs Klay, he’s one of the best shooters to ever play this game,”: teammate Juan Toscano-Anderson said. “The magnitude of this moment is so big.”

Tickets are at a premium for Sunday’s home matchup with the Cavaliers following months of speculation on when Thompson would finally take the court again. He will do so at home in Chase Center as planned.

In November with the Warriors off to a sizzling 15-2 start, he declared “it’s championship or bust” while noting they’d be that much better once he returned.

Kerr spoke to the team this past week about the adjustments of working Thompson back into the rotation, given there will be fewer minutes and opportunities for players who have contributed significantly already to this impressive start by Golden State.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
