What’s New

Chicago Bears President Ted Phillips should not be involved with interviewsTodd Welteron January 11, 2022 at 4:30 pm

Chicago Bears President and CEO Ted Phillips survived yesterday’s purge. Out are Ryan Pace as general manager and head coach Matt Nagy. The one man who has epitomized the Chicago Bears mediocrity since 1999 when he was elevated to his role, still gets to keep his keycard to Halas Hall.

What is worse, he still gets a voice in selecting the new general manager and head coach. That is right, Bears fans, he gets to stay in the room where it happens. If there is one thing Phillips has proven, he is no Alexander Hamilton.

The Chicago Bears have just six winning seasons, six playoff appearances, two NFC Championships games, and lost one Super Bowl while Phillips has had a general manager report to him. He has gone through four general managers and five head coaches.

Phillips runs a football business but has admitted to not having any football expertise. He has been in charge for 22 years, employed by the Bears for 38 years, and probably still has no clue where the film room is at Halas Hall or what the I-formation is. That is like having someone be in charge of a bakery and the person does not know how to light the oven.

Thankfully, during yesterday’s embarrassing press conference, Chicago Bears chairman George McCaskey did announce that the new general manager will report directly to him and not Phillips. The sad part is that Phillips had to persuade McCaskey to take on supervisor duties, because Ted needs to focus on the purchase of Arlington Race Track and potentially turn that site into the Bears’ new stadium in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Yet, Phillips will still be a part of the general manager search committee. Why? Well, because he also serves as McCaskey’s consigliere-except George cannot see that Ted Phillips is more of a Fredo and less of a Tom Hagen.

“I trust Ted implicitly,” McCaskey said. “I have great respect for his judgment, his analytical skills and his instincts in evaluating the people we’re interviewing. And in the end, he’ll be negotiating the contracts with the new general manager and new coach.”

It is okay to have Bill Polian and his years of championship experience helping in the process. It is a great idea to have the director of player engagement, Lamar “Soup” Campbell, on the search committee. He knows the current players and also has an extensive football background.

I agree with Ted Phillips on one thing: Of anyone involved in the search, Soup Campbell has the best pulse of the locker room and what the roster/players need.

He’s probably the #Bears‘ best hope to get this right.

— Adam Hoge (@AdamHoge) January 10, 2022

Tanesha Wade’s inclusion on the committee ensures the Chicago Bears interview a diverse group of candidates.

Phillips being in the interview room or on the Zoom calls so he can negotiate a contract is absolute nonsense. This will not be the first contract Phillips negotiates. All that needs to be done is tell Phillips this is guy, work out the contract details, and make sure to remember the whole reason he got this job in 1999 was that the previous guy bungled a contract.

The Chicago Bears showed this morning positive change was coming. By the afternoon, all the Chicago Bears’ ownership did was make it clear that Ted Phillips still gets a voice in football matters. Here we come back to the why which I thought we were done with finding the why now that Nagy is no longer the coach.

It was looking even more promising when it appeared that only McCaskey was speaking. Then the press conference happened and there was Ted-although he did not answer many questions. His presence just put a dark cloud over the whole thing.

It would have been nice to hear that Phillips was either retiring or being moved to just business operations president with no more say in the football portion of the Bears. Instead, it is status quo for Phillips with a slight alteration. Maybe it is because McCaskey just does not want a football czar.

“I don’t think there’s anything magical about a so-called football czar.”
— George McCaskey

— Patrick Finley (@patrickfinley) January 10, 2022

I guess Phillips remains with his title because of semantics or maybe because McCaskey is afraid giving the football expert a president title will suddenly give that person magical powers that will turn George into a football expert.

I know it is semantics but being stubborn on a football operations president is not thinking big picture.

The front office role George McCaskey is looking to fill is essentially the president of football operations without the title. The general manager will be the top football person and report directly to ownership. By being afraid of a football czar’s magical powers, it limits the Bears’ scope of restructuring the front office to a degree

For example, one of the first candidates to call is Baltimore Ravens Executive Vice President, Ozzie Newsome. He built an outstanding front office in Baltimore. Then he handed off the general manager title. If he is interested in the Bears’ job, do you think he is going to leave Baltimore for a role he already gave up? Probably not.

Also, a successful front office sometimes has additional layers to work smarter and not harder. It means dividing out roles and that means possibly more people in the front office.

McCaskey’s thinking just seems to be stuck in the same old, same old, and let’s get a general manager and be done with it.

The other reason this is a big deal is that it shows the Chicago Bears are not seeing the big picture on the possible new stadium in Arlington Heights, IL.

The Chicago Bears have a chance to build a state-of-the-art facility in the Chicago suburbs. Yet, they are treating the process like a wait-and-see situation. I get closing on a deal like this is going to take some time.

George McCaskey compares #Bears‘ purchase of Arlington Park property to buying a house.

Bears are currently under contract but need to do “due diligence” and go over all the regulations and checks before they can close on it.

— 670 The Score (@670TheScore) January 10, 2022

In the meantime, the Bears need to start making sure they are prepared for the fight to get to Arlington Heights. The impression McCaskey and Phillips gave is that is another day’s problem.

If they want Phillips to spearhead the Arlington Heights project, he should not be wasting time in interviews. He should be touring as many NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB stadiums to get the best ideas possible.

He should be prepping to fight Chicago politics. He should be already engaged in finding ways to secure financing to build the new stadium. He should be meeting with developers on getting ideas for developing the rest of the land. Ted should already be holding preliminary talks with Cook County, Arlington Heights, and the state on possible infrastructure needs like expanding roads and highways near the land.

Maybe Ted is doing all that.

The vibe from the press conference is all of that is on the back burner because George needs Ted desperately in the room.

George needs Ted to secure a new stadium that the Bears control and not Ted securing the proper wording on page two of the new general manager’s contract.

In this end, it is not as bad as it seems because keeping Ted and giving him a say in the next general manager and head coach was about the sixth-worst thing to come out of the press conference.

1. Use a grieving family and kid to chastise Bears fans for being idiots.

2. Insult a reporter/columnist before question is asked

3. Drive Bill Polian’s book sales

4. Call one of the most respected players in your team’s history a liar.

5. Fail to instill confidence

Bears ask to interview Todd Bowles for head coach position

Todd Bowles could have been the Bears’ defensive coordinator three years ago. Now, he’ll have a chance to be head coach.

The Bears put in a request to interview the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator for their head coaching vacancy, a source confirmed Tuesday morning. Bowles has already interviewed for the Jaguars’ opening.

Bowles is the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the sport after having signed a three-year deal worth at least $3 million per season in August.

When Vic Fangio left the Bears to take over the Broncos in early 2019, then-coach Matt Nagy was interested in replacing him with Bowles, a friend who once played for his father in high school. Bucs coach Bruce Arians had the same idea, though — the two were tight and worked together when Arians was the Cardinals head coach.

Bowles picked the Bucs. Wisely so — they won the Super Bowl last year when Bowles’ defense held Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to nine points.

The Bucs beat the Bears 38-3 earlier this season. Before the game, Nagy said that “the amount of respect that I have for Todd Bowles as a defensive coordinator and what he does is real.” After the Bucs defense battered Justin Fields, Arians said that “Todd loves seeing rookie quarterbacks.”

Bowles has the leadership experience the Bears covet; he was the Jets head coach from 2015-18.

The Bears have also reportedly requested interviews with Bowles’ offensive counterpart in Tampa Bay, Byron Leftwich, and Bills coordinators Brian Daboll and Leslie Frazier. In the case of all four men, the Bears have to wait until their playoff game is completed this weekend to conduct the interview.

Monday, Bears chairman George McCaskey said the team is likely to hire a general manager before a coach. The Bears will cast a wide net in their GM search — It’s unclear if they’ll have one in place before they conduct their first head coach interview.

Chicago Bears (Photo by Douglas P. DeFelice/Getty Images)

This is an exciting time to be a fan of the Chicago Bears, as the team is moving on to new, fresh faces at head coach and general manager.

Gone will be the days of Matt Nagy handcuffing Justin Fields’ true potential. That’s what the next couple of weeks are about — finding people who can come in and not only allow Fields to be himself, but help him flourish.

The Bears’ search for a new head coach and general manager will take priority for right now. But, right around the corner is free agency and the 2022 NFL Draft. This is a big offseason for Chicago — a crucial one.

Going into the draft this year, the Bears are set up for a somewhat difficult weekend. They only have five picks, and just two within the first four rounds.

In a post-Ryan Pace world, the Chicago Bears will need to be extra diligent with their 2022 NFL Draft picks.

Whomever takes over Pace’s spot as GM will have a difficult task ahead, preparing for the draft. With only five picks total, the thought of acquiring more draft capital is certainly on the table.

For now, we will operate under the assumption the Bears keep their five picks. Chicago has one pick each in the second and third rounds, respectively. Then, they will pick twice in the fifth round, with just one pick separating those selections. Finally, the Bears have a selection in the sixth round.

Keep in mind, with just a handful of picks, the Bears need to focus on their pain points. Using The Draft Network mock draft simulator, this is the very first mock draft we have come up with here and one that fills some major needs.

Who are the NBA free agents to watch in 2022 and 2023? Most of the league’s superstars have signed long-term extensions with their current teams, leading some league executives to call 2022 “The Offseason of the Rotational Players.”

Still, superstars like Bradley Beal, James Harden, Kyrie Irving and Russell Westbrook could become free agents if they don’t sign extensions between now and June. Here’s our team-by-team look at all the players who can and will hit free agency over the next two seasons.

Key: Restricted = restricted free agent; player = player option; team = team option; ETO = early termination option

Chicago Bears coach and general manager search already getting intenseRyan Heckmanon January 11, 2022 at 2:35 pm

Chicago Bears (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

The future is now for the Chicago Bears.

Monday morning was an eventful one for the Bears organization, as they decided to move on from both head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace.

Later on Monday, we heard from George McCaskey and Ted Phillips as they laid out their plan for the immediate future. Fans had a hard time listening to another one of these press conferences, as it felt like more of the same from these two.

Regardless of whether or not McCaskey and Phillips know what they’re doing, they are in charge. Well, it’s mostly McCaskey at this point who will be calling the shots. But, they have a tall task ahead of them in replacing both Nagy and Pace.

The Chicago Bears are already being aggressive with requesting interviews to fill both major vacancies.

Over the first 24 hours of both vacancies in Chicago, the Bears have reached out to quite a few individuals to help fill these positions.

With both head coach and general manager, one of the primary focuses will be working together in building around franchise quarterback Justin Fields.

It was clear that Nagy was holding yet another quarterback back from being the player he could be, and that’s something the Bears can’t afford to let happen again.

The Bears have now officially reached out to six head coaching candidates and three general manager candidates in the past day. Each of the following interview requests have been confirmed by one of Tom Pelissero, Ian Rapoport or Adam Schefter. Let’s dig in a little bit to each one of them.

3 under the radar candidates to replace Matt Nagy for BearsVincent Pariseon January 11, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Chicago Bears (Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images)

The Chicago Bears did themselves no favors by waiting this long but they finally fired Matt Nagy. He was their head coach for four years and made the playoffs twice but it became clear that it wasn’t because of him. They also lost both of their playoff games so it isn’t even like he did anything to advance them forward.

The Bears probably should have done this a long time ago but it is what it is. The streak of never firing a coach mid-season lives on. Since the Bears haven’t won anything since 1985, they should probably consider changing some of their traditions but that is a story for another day. All delaying it did was make it harder to hire a replacement.

The Bears also fired Ryan Pace. Allowing him to choose a third head coach would have been a disaster, even by Chicago Bears standards. So now they have to wait for a new general manager to hire a new head coach.

The new general manager needs to have one thing in mind and that is the development of Justin Fields. Someone who can help him reach his ceiling is very important so that is what the new GM will be looking for.

The Chicago Bears need to worry about getting the right head coach now.

There are a lot of good candidates out there. From the NCAA to the NFL, there are plenty of people for the Bears to consider. There are some names that everybody says but there are also some under-the-radar names to think about. These are the three best low key names for the Bears to interview for the head coaching job:

Harden sits out Nets’ loss; expected back Wed.on January 11, 2022 at 3:24 am

print

PORTLAND, Ore. — Brooklyn Nets guard James Harden did not play in Monday night’s 114-108 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers because of a left knee hyperextension.

The good news for the Nets is that coach Steve Nash said Harden did not need an MRI and should be ready to play Wednesday against the Chicago Bulls.

“I think we’re being overly cautious,” Nash said prior to Monday’s game. “A heavy stretch of games. Expect him to play Wednesday.”

Nash said after Sunday’s 121-119 overtime win over the San Antonio Spurs that both Harden and star forward Kevin Durant wanted to play in Monday’s game, which was rescheduled from a Dec. 23 postponement because of a COVID-19 outbreak on the Nets’ roster. But the Nets changed course with so many games in the near future, including another back-to-back on Wednesday and Thursday: a road game against the Bulls and a home game against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Harden played 44 minutes in Sunday’s game and is averaging 38.6 minutes per game so far this month. Durant noted that part of the reason he wanted to play, even after a cross-country flight on the second night of a back-to-back, is so he can continue building “chemistry” with guard Kyrie Irving. Irving, who is not vaccinated against COVID-19, returned to the lineup in a Jan. 5 win over the Indiana Pacers but is still not able to play in home games because of the vaccination mandate in New York City.

Nash said that Durant’s minutes would be watched against the Blazers, but he ended up playing 42 minutes in the loss. Irving played 40.

Nets center LaMarcus Aldridge missed his second straight game because of right foot soreness. Nash said he does not expect Aldridge to play Wednesday in Chicago.

This month, you’re given 1 minute inside the Yayoi Kusama Let’s Survive Forever Infinity Mirror Room — a time guideline instituted by Kusama herself! Throughout this winter season, Chicago residents can enjoy free admission Wednesdays at Field Museum. On these days, you get free access to the general exhibition.
